I won't try & persuade you if you don't feel comfortable trying translation, but let me suggest something. If you've got access to a Spanish-English dictionary, & you're fluent in Spanish (as I presume), you can use it to (sloooowly) produce an adequate translation. (It's extremely labor-intensive to do it word by word, & I wouldn't suggest it for anything but the shortest articles; I know, I've done it from German, & boy, it gives me headaches!) Even a not-great translation on an article is better than none at all; editors on EngWP fluent in English can fix any mistakes. I know this from experience, too; I'm collaborating with a guy on fixing a badly-translated article from Italian WP, & we're getting it handled. The biggest problem is being sure the translation doesn't introduce mistakes; those are almost impossible to fix without access to the original article's original-language sources (often not available in English). If you do decide to try it, best to cut & paste the Sp-lang article into a separate sandbox & work there. I'll leave you to decide; if I've got questions on Spanish, I know who to ask!

Re this: a few questions. I don't think this is the fault of your translation, I think it's the original writer is assuming knowledge.

1. "turned over to the winning side."? Who won? I know it was Franco, but was that Nationalists or Republicans?
2. José Luis Díez was intercepted; was she alone or in company? (As written, it's not clear if she was attacked by a group, or part of one.)
3. Can you define or explain "Miranda’s Law"?
4. She had 5x120mm; how were they laid out? 5x1, I presume, but...; if so, just add a "(5x1)".
5. What caliber were her machineguns, & how were they laid out?
6. If you've got access to the cited source, or you can find the information elsewhere, can you have a look & see how many depth charges she carried (if it's mentioned) & add it (eventually)? (I'd add it to both articles, if you do! And if you've got that information for any other destroyer, add it to their pages, too.)
7. If you've got access to the cited source, or you can find it, see they're based on the G-class, or just resembled them, and add it, too.

For the red links, let me suggest you search English WP for articles on the ships, places, whatever, & cut & paste the article headers in your links when/if you find them, before you save the page. (Another reason to use your own private sandbox; you can save your work there while you're looking... If you had as much success finding them as I did, i.e. none, I retract any implied criticism; still, it's a good idea.) And when you're formatting them, be careful with your capitalization (so "destroyer class" rather than "Destroyer Class", for instance, so anybody finding them can click & fill them without having to do a page move.)

If it sounds like I'm nitpicking, don't take it personally. If I'm wondering, you can bet somebody else will ask eventually. Besides, maybe somebody wants to know. :D I'm always of more information. "Miranda's Law" could still use some clarification, if you can find it. What was it? Why was it passed? Who was Miranda? I'm guessing it was a naval expansion act of some kind & he was President or Navy Minister or something. Add when you can? I wouldn't go into too much detail (never mind the difficulty in translating it!) 'cause the article doesn't need a lot of explaining about it, just some context/clarity.

To clarify here:

1. "Teniente de Navío"? A naval officer of some kind, I presume; what kind? (I'll post this on the article's talk page as "to do").
2. Did the Spanish Navy have a system for naming their destroyers? If so, a mention here would be in order. (Also any other class articles you do.)
3. Her 120s: 120 mm (4.7 in) L45 (5x1), instead, for next time (or you can beat me to changing Almirante Ferrándiz...).
4. "the ship`s captain"? When (if) you can, find & include his name. (Yeah, that could take some finding... I'll post this on the article's talk page as "to do").
5. "All ships returned". Which ones had originally gone? (Yeah, that could take some finding... I'll post this on the article's talk page as "to do", too).
6. Re Alcalá Galiano and Lazaga: I changed the links to "Spanish destroyer" so they won't need fixing later (per what I said above).
7. Barcáiztegui was refloated. Any hint what she was used for before scrapping? (I'll post this on the article's talk page as "to do", too).
8. Did she hit/damage Baleares? Include yes/no.
9. Finally, the letters (SB), (L), & so on in the identifiers. I'm guessing these are the pennants they flew. Some clarification, if you can find it. Also, evidently, WP doesn't like them being used in titles, so I took them out of the links, & out of the header; if you can explain, do put it back in the first line. (I wouldn't bold it, tho, myself.)

To clarify here:

Canarias fired from 16 km, and with her second salvo hit Almirante Ferrándiz, too impact the 3rd since 20 km. The destroyer took six hits from Canarias' 200 mm (8") battery and sank 18 nm (33 km) of Calaburras with most of her crew.

Did Canarias commence from 20km? Score hits with her first salvo, from 20km, or only from 16? Also, if you can find it, how many survived? TREKphiler ^{hit me ♠} 11:32, 17 July 2008 (UTC) (P.S. Clarification

Got it. For next time, might want to just include in the article, or put it on the article talk page; I'll see it there, too, & if anybody else is watching it, they can fix it as easy. Not that I mind...but if the idea is to improve the article (& it is), it's faster that way. I confess I'm still not clear, tho.

1. From the rank structure, it looks like Teniente is fairly junior, equal to an Army captain, roughly USN/RN equal to Lieutenant; would you agree?
2. I got that Canarias scored her 1st hits at 16km, but the "20km" suggests she either commenced fire before 16km or her target was opening the range (going away from her); can you say which? Also, I'm going to add Canarias stopped to pick up survivors; that's a very honorable opponent & worthy of mention.
3. Baleares. I'll add it was a joint attack; that way it's a bit clearer. (Does Baleares have a SpWP page? Does it say which ship sank her? Am I wrong to think you haven't looked there already? ;) )

As for the rest, as noted, it's on the article talk page if anybody can find it; I doubt you're the only one interested in ships of the Spanish Navy (just the only 1 I know of :) ). Oh, and about "naming systems", maybe I wasn't clear enough. I mean, how were the names chosen? USN names destroyers for former sailors (& sometimes Secretaries of the Navy); it looks like Spain does, too, & that's what i wondered. Add it on the Churruca class talk page? Teniente. Gotcha now. Yeah, he's pretty junior; I'm going to add equivalent to USN/RN Lieutenant (which is about the same as a captain in U.S./British Army).

Baleares. Good bet it was Lepanto (absent knowing the engagement range), & we've got 2 sources for it being her.

Re Motrico. Since he was killed at the Battle, not (strictly speaking) the place, I changed it to a red link.

Or maybe I don't. This says Libertad and Méndez Núñez were on escort; this doesn't. (I've got the page open now.) This says 5 destroyers, this 7. I'm guessing the convoy had escorts, too, to begin with, but it needs clearing up, on both pages. Can I suggest you post here, with a link to here, on the confusion? <--Let me see if I have this straight. A convoy of Italian supplies to the Nationalists is escorted by Nationalist heavy cruisers Canarias and Baleares with 3 DDs. A Republican task force goes to intercept the convoy, fails to make contact, & except for Ciscar, Jose Luis Diez, two C- and two B-class submarines, turns back. On the night of 5-6 March (4-5 March?), Canarias and Baleares take Libertad under fire, to no effect. Libertad escorts Sanchéz Barcáiztegui, Lepanto, & Almirante Antequera counterattack with torpedoes, & Lepanto sinks Baleares. Good so far? Now, I'm still unclear where Ciscar, Diez, & company were bound, since it appears they were detached from the force the Nationalists encountered; or do I have that wrong? It also looks like the Republican cruisers & Jaime I played almost no part at Cape Palos; because their gunnery was so poor, they achieve no results worth mentioning? I suggest you copy this (up to "mentioning", minus the "<--" outdent), & any answers you can find, here, 'cause it looks like there are mistakes somewhere. Or maybe I just don't get it.... I think I've got it straight, now. Thanks for your patience. I feel a bit like I've jumped in the deep end on something I know almost nothing about. You can do 1 thing, tho: straighten out here why there's such a large force sailing out, but only a small force engaged here. It's pretty clear you understand it, & I'd rather correct your translation than try & figure it out when I don't understand it & risk screwing it up & introducing mistakes that will be a bear (that is, a royal pain in the neck) to fix. Oh, one other thing. Did I add the "task force" strength to the right page? I moved it to follow what you added, but I wasn't sure if it got to the right page. What's in a name?

For instance, Mannert Abele is named for submariner Manert L. Abele, who was a USN sailor killed in action; Burke is named for a USN admiral; & USN uses names of former sailors (for destroyers). It looks like Spanish Navy choses their ship names (or destroyer names, anyhow) much the same way; no ref their pennant # or hull classification. What I was getting at was, is that how they do it? Or do they use military men generally (as opposed to Navy only)? Or something else? You can answer here, same as before, where this probably belongs. TREKphiler ^{hit me ♠} 16:25, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

You're getting there... I don't quite know how else to say this, 'cause maybe it's too technical if your English isn't good (& I've had people raised speaking English not knowing what a naming system is). Let me try again. If Spain is launching a brand-new destroyer which still hasn't got a name, will they name her for:

1. a former naval officer or sailor, now dead?
2. a living naval officer or sailor?
3. a former Army officer or soldier, now dead?
4. a living Army officer or soldier?
5. a member of the aristocracy or nobility?
6. somebody else?

If the answer to 1 or 2 is yes, must the answer to 3 &/or 4 be no? Leaving aside other classes of ships. It appears the most important ships (battleships & such) are named for royalty, so I'll take that as true (unless you correct me). You've said minesweepers are named for rivers, & submarines get numbers; that kind of clear yes/no is what I'm after. When you do reply (& maybe to my page, so we don't have people on the article talk not knowing what's up), if you can give me something that clear, it'd be ideal. What I'm hoping to be able to do is post something for somebody who knows nothing about it to be able to look a ship name (like you can for a USN ship), knowing nothing but the fact it's named for a former sailor, & know it's a destroyer. If there's that much simplicity in Spanish Navy naming. All navies have some kind of system, some just aren't simple. Nor is explaining, I see, when there's a language barrier. Hope you aren't too frustrated with me. Believe me, I'm not trying to give you a hard time. I get the feeling you love ships too, & I want this to be right. José Ferrándiz y Niño

A few things to add if/when you can:

1. The squadron was retained in Port Said. Can you say why? Was it because they were needed there, or the war ended before they arrived in the Philippines, or something else?
2. a first (given) name for Admiral Camara
3. "in command of a destroyer flotilla": Do you have a flotilla number? And which ship he flew his flag in (which was his "headquarters ship", if the term's not familiar)?

Lepanto

A couple of things to add if/when you can:

1. "bound for Bizerta," I get the feeling the war was going badly & they hoped to keep their freedom, or avoid being executed. True?
2. "On maneuvers 27 July 1940". It sounds like an anti-submarine exercise. (I don't want to speculate & I don't know how much emphasis the Armada placed on ASW.) If it is, change from "On maneuvers" to "On an antisubmarine warfare exercise"?
3. "between her gun and sail with her stem" Do I understand correctly C-4 had an aft-mounted deck gun, and Lepanto split the distance between her gun and conning tower? Also, was "sail" the usual term in the '30s, or is "conning tower" accurate? Fix as needed?
4. And a small copyedit question. Is the SpNavy usual C2, C-2, C.2? If I've got it wrong, fix it?

Also, any biographical info you can find, like who was her captain at any time (especially when she ran down C-4, & who commanded C-4 then) would be great. Add when you can get to it? Also, I deleted "Spain" from the "Ship country" parameter in the infobox; unless a ship served with more than one country, I don't think it's necessary. Cheers. Destroyermen

I don't know if the infobox will allow it, but if you can find it, & it will go in without mucking things up, can you include the number of propshafts/screws the ships had? To clarify

"executed". I suspected as much, but couldn't say for sure.

"sail". I do wonder if that was the term in use in 1939, which is what I was getting at. I imagine the original writer in Spanish doesn't know it changed.

deck gun. I've got C-4 hit aft, but the Type VII article places the gun forward. Looks like it needs fixing.

" 3 destroyers and send in camar's squadron.... no name asigned." I take it this is your latest? I find no identifier very odd, but if there isn't one... I'm going to post the question on the article talk page & see if there's anything in the archives, if anybody can dig it out.

Re C-3:

1. "submarine elevator Génova"? Any clue what this is? It sounds a bit like a retractable mast or snorkel. And when you do (eventually) get to the D-class, don't forget to del "which used a fixed unit." from C-3; it won't really be essential then.
2. Teniente de Navío Viniegra. A first name, if you can find one?
3. Capitán de Corbeta Lara. A first name, if you can find one? (For when you get around to C-1; don't need it here, but I'd keep a note of it, or of where you found it.)
4. "and the rest of the flotilla's senior officers". Is that too strong? Were all the boats' XOs (second in command) arrested, also? Just the top officers? In C-3, it was both, which suggests both for all.
5. The diesels & electric motors. If you can identify & include if the diesels were 2 or 4 stroke (2/4 cycle), & what the make (brand name, manufacturer) of the electric motor was? When you get a chance.
6. "depart to Protect the oil tanker Ophir with the B-6. 27 July, all destroyers and submarines" I'm taking that to mean from Malaga; correct? If not, where from?
7. "Almirante Cervera, which had left Ferrol bound for set Gibraltar Strait." Did she intend to enter Ceuta, or transit the Strait? If transit, what was the reason for blocking Ceuta? Also, heavy cruiser or light cruiser? (I recognize the name, but not where from.)
8. "returned to Cartagena with average. " I confess, I have no idea what this was supposed to mean.
9. "She also aided" With "C-4, C-5, & C-6 too? When you get to the C-class page, it would fit there, rather than here, so take your time, unless you're going to do the C-class page now... If so, probably the named subs have this on their individual pages; just put it on the class page.
10. Arbona. Can you say what Alférez de Navío is equivalent to?
11. "clean the rest of diary food."? I'm very unclear what this was supposed to mean.
12. "One section 8 meters from bow" I presume this is an 8m long section of her foreparts?
13. "Holland 105" That design number is sticking in my head. Can you track down what the U.S. equivalent design is? (Don't put too much time into it, but if you find it somewhere, do let me know.)
14. "C-2, C- and C6" A number got dropped out; just add it. (Don't forget the italics.)
15. Conversion of metric units to feet/inches. I'll leave that to you; you may as well get used to it... After awhile, you stop needing a calculator for round numbers. (I don't even have to bother with 100mi is 160km anymore, or 100nm is 185km, I've converted it enough.)

Hope I don't discourage you with how long this list is. ;) Also, I moved some to the talk page I think is better for the C-class page than C-3. Oh, & when you said "long", I thought it would run 100KB. This was no problem (just a matter of copyediting, which I'm not terrific at). Cheers. Re Brins. You're right, I didn't read carefully enough. I'll break the link, if you haven't already.

To be clear, was the Vickers diesel a 2 cycle or 4 cycle? And don't forget to add same every time? I find it helps to copy from previous work, so I don't have to remember it all, so open C-3 when you do C-class (& the rest of the C-boats, when you get to them) & just copy it page-to-page (watching out for differences in spec between ships; that still bites me sometimes ;D)

"average" I suspect it means something to do with "average results" or "average success", but...

"8m" suggest you have a 2d look at the original before I change it.

11. USN calls it "dumping trash & garbage"; EZ to fix.

Cervera Still not clear why blockade Ceuta if she's just using the Strait; to prevent her fuelling? Or making repairs after engaging Canarias? Or something else? Not really a huge issue for C-3, but bears finding out eventually; somebody's bound to ask. (I did.)

"Holland 105" I knew that was familiar. I think it's the designer's number for the USN H-boats, which I think I can now link in.

"submarine elevator" Have a look at this. That's what it sounds like, & I get the impression it's a built-in escape device, rather like (I think) modern German subs use.

And don't feel bad about the feet/inches, if you think in metric. It just takes practise. I got used to reading sources that routinely included both, so after awhile, I could convert common calibers (88mm-->3.5", 4"-->102/105mm) without even thinking. It gets easier. If this helps

Got another one (more for me than anything). Alférez de Navío & Capitán de Corbeta both appear equivalent to Lieutenant Commander. Why are there 2 ranks?

And evidently I spoke too soon on the H-boats... I know I've seen that design number before, but I cannot find what class it applied to, & it's really bugging me. %( Thanks anyhow.

When you do get to the C-class, be sure & make clear the difference in the fitting of the Génova rescue chamber? I get the sense the C-class had mating rings for a shipborne bell, like McCann's, & the D-class a built-in unit (as noted above); check it if you can? Thanks again. This is very useful. Thanks. I also found one on Portugese rank insignia which uses the same rankings as Spain, & confirms the equivalents. Hi, and welcome to the Military history WikiProject! As you may have guessed, we're a group of editors working to improve Wikipedia's coverage of topics related to military history.

A few features that you might find helpful:

• Our navigation box points to most of the useful pages within the project.
• The announcement and open task box is updated very frequently. You can watchlist it if you're interested; or, you can add it directly to your user page by including {{WPMILHIST Announcements}} there.
• Most important discussions take place on the project's main discussion page; it is highly recommended that you watchlist it.
• The project has several departments, which handle article quality assessment, detailed article and content review, writing contests, article logistics, and other tasks.
• We have a number of task forces that focus on specific topics, nations, periods, and conflicts.
• We've developed a style guide that covers article structure and content, template use, categorization, and many other issues of interest.
• If you're looking for something to work on, there are many articles that need attention.

submarines General Sanjuro and General Mola

Archimede class submarine and Spanish submarine C-3 contradict each other, the first says that Archimede was renamed General Sanjuro and Torricelli was renamed General Mola, whilst the latter says that Archimede was renamed General Mola and Torricelli was renamed General Sanjuro. Couple quick questions - small help

Hey Takashi. A couple quick questions as I see you're both here and in the es: wiki working on Ships. As you've seen maybe, I'm (slowly) improving/translating/standardizing some articles related to Colombia's Armed Forces and have initially focused more on Navy and a few of its related articles. So, a couple quick questions:

• I wanted to translate the USCG Medium Endurance Cutter (as COL has a few of those second hand) but Im not sure how to name it .. "Cúter de Media Autonomía (WMEC)" , "Cúter de autonomía media (WMEC)","Cúter de autonomía media (GC EEUU)", "Cúter mediano (USCGS)", "Cúter mediano (Guardacostas EEUU)" and a few other alternative combinations... Which takes me to my 2nd question (and why I'd rather ask it in the EN wiki than the ES..)
• I was trying to find the ship naming conventions there and it seems there are none anymore, and digging leads me to a few discussions that have none of discussion and a lot of bickering.. What's the deal with the marine milhist project there? it seems there was some kind of fight and the prj seems almost abandoned?, I dont care and dont wanna get in the details. I just wanna know if I bother with it, as I maybe could and would like to help a little there, as I go around my own edits, but I'm not looking to get myself into an old wives bickering mudfight.. Is it still alive and workable?

PS10 solar power plant

In PS10 solar power plant you have undone my correction of "C" to "°C" in the sentence "The solar receiver at the top of the tower produces saturated steam at 275 C." Europe 10,000 Challenge invite

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Europe/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Germany, Italy, the Benelux countries, Iberian Peninsula, Romania, Slovenia etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). March Madness 2017

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

• tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
• updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
• creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

2017 Military Historian of the Year and Newcomer of the Year nominations and voting

As we approach the end of the year, the Military History project is looking to recognise editors who have made a real difference. Each year we do this by bestowing two awards: the Military Historian of the Year and the Military History Newcomer of the Year. The co-ordinators invite all project members to get involved by nominating any editor they feel merits recognition for their contributions to the project. Nominations for both awards are open between 00:01 on 2 December 2017 and 23:59 on 15 December 2017. After this, a 14-day voting period will follow commencing at 00:01 on 16 December 2017. User group for Military Historians

Greetings,

"Military history" is one of the most important subjects when speak of sum of all human knowledge. To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. It also provides a platform to share the best practices between military historians, and various military related projects on Wikipedias. An initial discussion was has been done between the coordinators and members of WikiProject Military History on English Wikipedia. Now this discussion has been taken to Meta-Wiki. Contributors intrested in the area of military history are requested to share their feedback and give suggestions at Talk:Discussion to incubate a user group for Wikipedia Military Historians.

April 2018 Milhist Backlog Drive

G'day all, please be advised that throughout April 2018 the Military history Wikiproject is running its annual backlog elimination drive. This will focus on several key areas:

• tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
• adding or improving listed resources on Milhist's task force pages
• updating the open tasks template on Milhist's task force pages
• creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the scope of military history will be considered eligible. This year, the Military history project would like to extend a specific welcome to members of Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red, and we would like to encourage all participants to consider working on helping to improve our coverage of women in the military. This is not the sole focus of the edit-a-thon, though, and there are aspects that hopefully will appeal to pretty much everyone.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 April and runs until 23:59 UTC on 30 April 2018. Those interested in participating can sign up here.

Wikiproject Military history coordinator election nominations open

Nominations for the upcoming project coordinator election are now open. A team of up to ten coordinators will be elected for the next year. The project coordinators are the designated points of contact for issues concerning the project, and are responsible for maintaining our internal structure and processes. They do not, however, have any authority over article content or editor conduct, or any other special powers. More information on being a coordinator is available here. If you are interested in running, please sign up here by 23:59 UTC on 14 September! Voting doesn't commence until 15 September. ArbCom 2018 election voter message

Hello, Takashi kurita. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
