User talk:Stefán Örvar Sigmundsson/Archive 2007–2015
Welcome!
Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. Thank you for your contributions.
Currently, you are editing without a username. You can continue to do so, as you are not required to log in to Wikipedia to read and edit articles; however, logging in will result in a username being shown instead of your IP address (yours is S.Örvarr.S). Logging in does not require any personal details, and there are many other benefits for logging in.
When you edit pages:
- Please respect others' copyrights; do not copy and paste the contents from webpages directly.
- Please use a neutral point of view when editing articles; this is possibly the most important Wikipedia policy.
- If you are testing, please use the Sandbox to do so.
- Do not add unreasonable contents into any articles, such as copyrighted text, advertisement messages, and text that is not related to an article's subject. Adding such content or editing articles maliciously is considered vandalism.
The Wikipedia Tutorial is a good place to start learning about Wikipedia. For now, if you are stuck, you can click the edit this page tab above, type {{helpme}} in the edit box, and then click Save Page; an experienced Wikipedian will be around shortly to answer any questions you may have. Also feel free to ask a question on my talk page. I will answer your questions as far as I can! Thank you again for contributing to Wikipedia. John Vandenberg 23:56, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

Request
[edit]Do you have a microphone? If so, we are in need of some recordings in OGG format of the cognates listed here, apparently my pronunciation was inaccurate and so a native Icelander was requested. It’s a hard language! LOL. Anyway, if you could drop me line to let me know if you’re interested or not. Thanks! Max Naylor 13:24, 2 June 2007 (UTC)
Góða(n) daginn
[edit]Thanks for your message. From what I understand, both versions are correct. As you said, "flest fólk segir Góðan daginn". I've never seen or heard Góða daginn used (although I'm not a native speaker, so I don't know how often it's actually used in Iceland). Certainly, it's never been mentioned in any phrase books or Icelandic courses I've used. Also, a Google search for "góða daginn" returns only around 250 results, and a number of those are links to discussions about which version is right.
Anyway, I think the bottom line is this: the article is primarily intended for English speakers, not necessarily Icelanders. The phrase in question is part of a list of phrases for foreigners, not a grammar textbook. It is therefore better to use the most commonly used variant: góðan daginn, so as not to confuse learners. I assume the article you read is this one. Note the last sentence: "Myndirnar góðan dag og góða daginn eru því málfræðilega réttar en góðan daginn er algeng málvenja." Yes, it's technically grammatically wrong, but most people use it as a set phrase.

Vá, fyrir algjöra tilviljun ráfaði ég inn á þessa síðu og sá að íslenska er samvinna mánaðarins. Gerðir þú tilnefninguna? Flott framlag. --Steinninn 06:39, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

A translation request
[edit]Hi, I was just wondering if you could translate this passage:
- Smjörið er brætt og hveitið smátt og smátt hrært út í það, þangað til það er gengið upp í smjörið. Síðan er mjólkinni smáhellt út í, og hrært stöðugt í, til þess ekki fari í kekki. Þegar mjólkin er gengin upp og grauturinn orðinn vel jafn og saltið komið í, skal taka hann ofan. Með honum er borin saftblanda eða mjólk, einnig steyttur sykur og kanel.
For the Icelandic language article (the text examples section). Ta! Max Naylor 18:06, 29 June 2007 (UTC)
No problem, Máx Náýlór:
- The butter is melted and the flour stirred into it (slowly but surely), until it is has blended with the butter. Then the milk is slowly poured into, and stirred constantly, so it doesn’t get lumpy. When the milk has blended well and the porridge has become steady and salt has been added, it should be taken off. It is served with a (fruit) juice mixture or milk, even stirred sugar and cinnamon.
Damn, that proved to be harder than I anticipated. I don't really know anything about cooking so I'm not sure what was being talked about. It's some recipe, sounds foul. The words inside () can be skipped, it won't change the meaning, but including them makes it a bit more describing, I guess. I'm sure people are gonna go "Oh! That's terrible translated, I'll have to do it myself!" but one (with my knowledge) can only do one's best. Enjoy. --Stefán Örvarr Sigmundsson 03:45, 30 June 2007 (UTC)

Please keep in mind that the Wikipedia pages are not forums. That said, in answer to your question, it is a great program, but whether or not it is professional is a matter of opinion- and it's absolutely free, so it doesn't cost you anything to form your own. If you have any other questions about the program, consider asking them at [1]. Hope that helped! =David(talk)(contribs) 12:14, 22 September 2007 (UTC)
- I wasn't asking for myself but for a field called "Description" in the article "Comparison of raster graphics editors". I would have added something like "Professional image editor and graphics creation tool", this is actually about Adobe Photoshop which everybody knows is pro. And if Paint.NET is too I would have written the same or something similar. --Stefán Örvarr Sigmundsson 12:26, 22 September 2007 (UTC)
- Oh, my apologies! We've had several people post installation questions and such on the talk page, and I thought that's what this was. Again, I'm sorry for the misunderstanding!
- As for your question, I think it would be best to leave "professional" off. It's really meant to be easily accessible before powerful; besides, the moment you put it on there, a {{fact}} tagger would pounce. Thanks for the consideration, though! =David(talk)(contribs) 17:45, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

Bot help
[edit]{{helpme}} I am looking for a Wikimedian who can help me with bot problems. I am trying to program a bot for other Wikimedia-projects with C# but I need some assistance with the setup, and general advice would be well appreciated. The helper would have to be familiar with the OS Windows XP, be ready to communicate via MSN and, of course, have some understanding of C#.
- It would also be quite cool if bots were also categorised by programming language. --Stefán Örvarr Sigmundsson 21:11, 12 November 2007 (UTC)
- Have you read through Wikipedia:Creating a bot and Wikipedia:Bot requests (and its talk page)? The first one has lots of good general advice (so it seems to me, who has never created a bot), and the second and its archives might help to give you an idea of what sort of bots people have made. Perhaps some of the people there will be able to help you.
- I'm not sure you'll get much help with the {{helpme}} template, since bot writing is a fairly specialized topic. I'd try asking on one of the bot pages here on wikipedia, or possibly a post to the help desk might attract attention from someone who knows more and can help you.
- I hope you find the help you're looking for. --Sopoforic 21:44, 12 November 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, I did read both those pages. My problem is with my CMD, which neither page covers. I just wanted someone to talk with via MSN to solve this and for future problems, like with development, should they occur. --Stefán Örvarr Sigmundsson 22:35, 12 November 2007 (UTC)
- I see. I've only ever written programs that read from wikipedia, never edit it, so I probably can't help you, personally. I suspect that a nice, targeted question on either WP:BOTREQ or its talk page will find someone who can help, although I don't know whether anyone programs bots in C# specifically. --Sopoforic 23:39, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

Wikimania 2010 could be coming to Stockholm!
[edit]I'm leaving you a note as you may be interested in this opportunity.
People from all six Nordic Wiki-communities (sv, no, nn, fi, da and is) are coordinating a bid for Wikimania 2010 in Stockholm. I'm sending you a message to let you know that this is occurring, and over the next few months we're looking for community support to make sure this happens! See the bid page on meta and if you like such an idea, please sign the "supporters" list at the bottom. Tack (or takk), and have a wonderful day! Mike H. Fierce! 09:52, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
Your complaint

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Icelandic National Police, and it appears to be very similar to another wikipedia page: Icelandic Police. It is possible that you have accidentally duplicated contents, or made an error while creating the page— you might want to look at the pages and see if that is the case. If you are intentionally moving or duplicating content, please be sure you have followed the procedure at Wikipedia:Splitting by acknowledging the duplication of material in edit summary to preserve attribution history.
This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article and it would be appreciated if you could drop a note on the maintainer's talk page. CorenSearchBot (talk) 07:11, 29 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit]Hi. Sorry to bother you, but I've come here because you're listed at Wikipedia:Translators available#Icelandic-to-English, and we need someone who knows the language. Basically, we've got this article listed at WP:PNT, Jóna Kristjana, and we don't know what it means. My instinct says its probably not notable, and the section in the middle appears to be a hymn of some sort. If you have a free minute could you please take a look and give us the gist of it. Thank you--Jac16888Talk 01:08, 14 February 2009 (UTC)

Sorry t bother you again, but we've got this one, Jón Rúnar. Non-notable bio?--Jac16888Talk 10:49, 25 February 2009 (UTC)
- lol... the things people come up with. It says, loosely translated, "Jón Rúnar, born in Norway and raced by Belgian nigger slaves. He has recently become homosexual and is now in a relationship with a half-Arab man named Haduk Rook Nachek. Haduk Rook likes reading and cuddling with his boyfriend." I'm pretty sure it's nothing important. --Stefán Örvarr Sigmundsson (talk) 11:49, 25 February 2009 (UTC)
- Cheers, have deleted it now. You would be amazed at some of the things I see as an admin. Just yesterday I deleted three articles which were stories about jurassic park characters having sex with dinosaurs, written in french. Össur
[edit]Hello there. Just to let you know that I've proposed the article Össur be moved back to Ossur. I've started a discussion at Talk:Össur. Regards, Gr1st (talk) 13:26, 29 August 2009 (UTC)
- On a related note, I noticed that you initially moved the page to Össur hf (which must have been an accident) and then copied the contents of the page to its current location at Össur. There is a significant problem with moving pages via copy-paste, in that it separates the article from its edit history. This is a problem because the terms of the Creative Commons license requires all contributors be given credit for their work—this is accomplished through the intact edit history. By severing the two, the CC license has in effect been invalidated, which is of course a problem. Please always remember to move pages with the move button, and if there's a redirect blocking a move, simply list it at Wikipedia:Requested moves so an admin can move it for you. I've already fixed this move, so don't worry about it. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me. Regards, Parsecboy (talk) 14:56, 30 August 2009 (UTC)

You are now a Reviewer
[edit]Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.
Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.
When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.
If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 18:38, 19 June 2010 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of IHF men's world rankings
[edit]A tag has been placed on IHF men's world rankings, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:
Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion," which appears inside of the speedy deletion ({{db-...}}
) tag (if no such tag exists, the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate). Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Intoronto1125TalkContributions 03:06, 6 August 2011 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Músíktilraunir
[edit]If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Músíktilraunir requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about an organization or company, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. Articles on various Althing members
[edit]Hi! Ive spent some time tagging a number of biographies from current parliament members in Iceland. The notability tag is placed because the article itself gives no indication of notability. You might think about expanding each of the articles from the material in the official Althing biography. The articles need other sources which point to notability. Newspaper articles, etc that point out important activities of the subjects would help. I am writing this with the hope that it is helpful since you have taken on a number of new articles which will need attention. Keep on editing! Stormbay (talk) 22:01, 18 May 2012 (UTC)

Empty categories
[edit]You created dozens of empty categories, e.g. Category:1918 establishments in Iceland. Empty categories are normally speedy deleted. Having redlinks in lists of categories (i.e. "by year") is not a problem, but the cats should only be created if at least one article is in them. Please stop creating empty categories. Fram (talk) 09:01, 13 September 2012 (UTC)
- I have been creating a bunch of related articles lately that make use of those categories - about 13 articles just yesterday. I have many more articles to create about the same subject and I just got tired of creating the categories ad hoc. Don't worry, I'm done for now with the categories. Iceland-related edits
[edit]Thanks for the personal appreciation you posted on my talkpage, for some of my latest contributions to some topics in the Icelandic field of Wikipedia. For sure I also appreciate your inputs, and the recent good debate we had at Talk:2008–2011 Icelandic financial crisis. Unfortunately my ties to Iceland (and knowledge about Iceland) is very limited, and when adding material I am in most cases entirely dependent of an automatic browser-translation of Icelandic web-material. Lately, I however caught interest to dig into the political and financial affairs affecting Iceland, since the Icelandic financial crisis erupted in 2008. The fuel behind my latest contributions for Wikipedia in this field, was (as you also suspected) a boiling frustration I had, when experiencing a great difficulty to find some easy accessible and accurate/neutral in-depth references formulated in English about Icelandic affairs.
I am indeed a Dane as you presumed, but live in Copenhagen, and only an "expert" to the extend of having a habit to research rather deep into various matters having ignited my interest. In my daily life I am working as a technical analytical engineer (graduated from Denmark's Technical University), who opted to supplement his education with a bachelor degree in Business Economics (from Copenhagen Business School). As such I don't have expert status within a certain field. My expertise is limited to my analytical skills. If you need my help/input to check/analyze for the completeness/accurateness of certain Wikipedia articles about Icelandic financial affairs, you are always welcome to contact me. But unfortunately this is probably the only Icelandic corner, where I can help and contribute. Currently, I also have an increased personal interest to follow how the economic-political topics develop in Iceland, particularly in the light of the severe financial crisis you were hit by in October 2008. I have a perception that we in Scandinavia + Iceland + Faroese Island all share the same basic Nordic mindset and cultural/historic values, and this is probably also why I tend mainly to have high interest to follow/contribute to articles about all sorts of economic/political developments in the Nordic countries. As a pro-European Dane, I also tend to have a high interest/knowledge about economic-political affairs within EU, which is the second corner I currently also attempt to help cover at Wikipedia. Best regards, Danish Expert (talk) 17:52, 14 April 2013 (UTC)

Icelandic presidential elections
[edit]I really see no need for the template - to answer your point about common appearance, all the tables already have a common appearance - i.e. the wikitable format. See for example 1968 and 1980 - they are already identical. This is also a format used across most election articles, so is more consistent than a template created for a specific country.
In addition, the appearance of the template is also poor - the heading having to be over two lines because the width has been set as too narrow. The wording is incorrect (words after slashes shouldn't be capitalised), and I also see no need for the links at the bottom. Number 57 17:25, 18 October 2013 (UTC)

Category redirects
[edit]Hello, S.Örvarr.S. Just to let you know, when you want to redirect a category, you should use the {{Category redirect}}
template rather than the #REDIRECT
keyword. For technical reasons, categories cannot be redirected like articles can. See the template documentation for more info. Thanks. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 10:39, 3 December 2013 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for December 4
[edit]Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Ambassadors of Iceland, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Macedonia and Georgia (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Speedy deletion nomination of Category:Politics of the Andorra
[edit]A tag has been placed on Category:Politics of the Andorra, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:
Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, you can place a request here. Green Giant (talk) 10:35, 24 December 2013 (UTC)

[edit]Hello. Regarding the recent revert you made to Template:.NET Framework version history: you may already know about them, but you might find Wikipedia:Template messages/User talk namespace useful. After a revert, these can be placed on the user's talk page to let them know you considered their edit inappropriate, and also direct new users towards the sandbox. They can also be used to give a stern warning to a vandal when they've been previously warned. Thank you. Dogmaticeclectic (talk) 22:06, 29 August 2014 (UTC)
Content removal
[edit]Greetings! When you remove contents from templates or articles, as you did to Template:.NET Framework version history, please provide an edit summary explaining the rationale behind the removal, especially when the amount of removal is massive and the removed contents includes text with source.
Another editor has now contested your removals and I can't see why not either. I'd advise you to communicate with that editor before considering repeating your removals. Cheers. Fleet Command (talk) 17:36, 30 August 2014 (UTC)

Your administrator status on the Icelandic Wikibooks
[edit]Hello. A policy regarding the removal of "advanced rights" (administrator, bureaucrat, etc.) was adopted by community consensus in 2013. According to this policy, the stewards are reviewing activity on wikis with no inactivity policy.
You meet the inactivity criteria (no edits and no log actions for 2 years) on the wiki listed above. Since that wiki does not have its own rights review process, the global one applies.
If you want to keep your rights, you should inform the community of the wiki about the fact that the stewards have sent you this information about your inactivity. If the community has a discussion about it and then wants you to keep your rights, please contact the stewards at m:Stewards' noticeboard, and link to the discussion of the local community, where they express their wish to continue to maintain the rights.
If you wish to resign your rights, you can reply here or request removal of your rights on Meta.
If there is no response at all after approximately one month, stewards will proceed to remove your administrator and/or bureaucrat rights. In ambiguous cases, stewards will evaluate the responses and will refer a decision back to the local community for their comment and review. If you have any questions, please contact the stewards. Proposed deletion of List of salaries of heads of state and government
[edit]The article List of salaries of heads of state and government has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- Un-sourced, mostly empty list.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Renata (talk) 00:24, 30 September 2015 (UTC)

Article upgrade assistance request (Pre-translation stage)
[edit]Seasons Greetings,
This is in reference to a relatively new umbrella article on en-wikipedia named Ceremonial pole. Ceremonial pole is a human tradition since ancient times; either existed in past at some point of time, or still exists in some cultures across global continents from north to south & from east to west. Ceremonial poles are used to symbolize a variety of concepts in several different world cultures.
Through article Ceremonial pole we intend to take encyclopedic note of cultural aspects and festive celebrations around Ceremonial pole as an umbrella article and want to have historical, mythological, anthropological aspects, reverence or worships wherever concerned as a small part.
While Ceremonial poles have a long past and strong presence but usually less discussed subject. Even before we seek translation of this article in global languages, we need to have more encyclopedic information/input about Ceremonial poles from all global cultures and languages. And we seek your assistance in the same.
Since other contributors to the article are insisting for reliable sources and Standard native english; If your contributions get deleted (for some reason like linguistics or may be your information is reliable but unfortunately dosent match expectations of other editors) , please do list the same on Talk:Ceremonial pole page so that other wikipedians may help improve by interlanguage collaborations, and/or some other language wikipedias may be interested in giving more importance to reliablity of information over other factors on their respective wikipedia.
This particular request is being made to you since your user name is listed in Wikipedia:Translators available list.
Thanking you with warm regards Mahitgar (talk) 05:48, 24 October 2015 (UTC)

It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
