Redirect request: Ayub Zonal Tournament

You have declined this request and have said: "Ayub Zonal Tournament ? President’s Trophy Grade-I: The title you suggested seems unlikely. Could you provide a source showing that it is a commonly used alternate name?"

Sorry, but frankly I find this hard to believe. Why is it "unlikely"? The original name of the tournament was "Ayub Zonal Tournament", named after Pakistan's President Ayub Khan and it evolved via another title into "President’s Trophy Grade-I". Then you are asking for a source when I have taken the trouble to find one in Wisden Cricketers' Almanack, the 100th edition published in 1963, on page 965 precisely. The contents of this page are a description going into some detail of "The Ayub Zonal Tournament, 1962". It was won by Karachi who defeated North Zone in the final.

What more am I expected to do? I suppose you want some online source like CricketArchive, which will be incorrect in any case, rather than a book which is widely renowned as the "Bible" of the world's second most popular spectator sport? I despair. No wonder I keep reading that good editors are leaving in droves and, equally, no wonder that Wikipedia retains little if any credibility in academic circles (I am one of a dwindling few who is still prepared to give it a chance). 86.168.218.118 (talk) 11:14, 20 August 2016 (UTC)

When I search for Ayub Zonal Tournament, only 3 hits are returned, one of which is President’s Trophy Grade-I where an IP editor has added the name only two days ago (Diff of President’s Trophy Grade-I). Could there by any chance be a misspelling here? The source here looks legit, and does mention "Ayub Zonal Tournament". A very plausible redirect it is not. Did you consider creating an account? That way you could create the redirect yourself, save us both some time, and, so it appears, some frustration. — Sam Sailor 11:25, 20 August 2016 (UTC)

Absolutely unbelievable, but then, no, it is actually typical. Instead of "searching for internet hits", why not adopt a scholarly approach and refer to Wisden Cricketers' Almanack which, as I have explained, is an impeccable and peerless source for cricket history. If administrative functions are being given to people like you who ignore definitive book references and rely on being able to find an obscure Google hit, then no wonder this site is on a downturn from which, in my honest opinion, it will never recover. You are the sort of person who would ignore Hansard and cite this crap instead. I suggest you read WP:VERIFY and its sub-pages. Administration is a real-world skill, and not something that can be achieved by someone who has merely completed 10k routine edits and reverted teenage pranks a few times. Think on. Guess what, I have just used a "Google hit" reference for one sentence because I was too lazy to look in a book and the XLinkBot has rejected it, even though the information provided is 100% correct, because it is on a suspect links list. Let's have a better look at what the sources say about this matter. TL;DR? - SPOILER ALERT on mouseover

I have found two more sources that refer to the competition as Ayub Zonal Tournament:

• Scyld Berry in The Observer on cricket: an anthology of the best cricket writing (1988) on page 169 mentions Ayub Zonal Tournament. That is the one singular mention in the book I can see.
• Bulletin with Newsweek (January 1981) writes:

  In 1964 it was reasonable by such standards for the new Ayub Zonal Tournament to be accorded first-class status. In the first round Dikhan, instead of playing another small fish like Baluchistan, were drawn against the mighty Railways, the ...

Looking into other sources, Ayub Trophy would appear to be the name used for the competition now titled President’s Trophy Grade-I in its first decade from 1960 and onwards in both then-contemporary sources, sources from each decade since, as well as in current sources:

• University of Dhaka in a 1962 report refers to the competition as Ayub Trophy writing:

  The Dacca University Cricket Team participated in the Ayub Trophy. It was defeated in the Zonal match played against Dacca Divisional Team.

• Journalist Altaf Gauhar, known as the de facto vice President of Pakistan through his close connection to President Ayub Khan after whom the competition was named, in his 1967 book Twenty Years of Pakistan, 1947-1967 refers to the competition as Ayub Trophy writing:

  The two major tournaments of the country, the National Cricket Championship for the Quaid-i-Azam Trophy and the Zonal Cricket Championship for the Ayub Trophy are conducted by the BCCP.

• Illustrated Weekly of Pakistan (1967) refers to the competition as Ayub Trophy.
• The Statesman in 1967 in multiple instances refers to the competition as Ayub Trophy.
• The Tempest: A Monthly Review of National Affairs in 1968 refers to the competition as Ayub Trophy.
• Pakistani sports journalist Mukhtar Bhatti, characterized on his death 7 February 2016, as an immortal name in Pakistan's sports journalism, and the greatest sport historian, in his book Twenty years of sports in Pakistan (1969), a book called quote "the most comprehensive record of all sports activities of the country since its birth", refers to the competition as Ayub Trophy; he does however also on page 225 refer to Ayub Zonal Trophy Cricket Championship. No mention of "Ayub Zonal Tournament" has been found.
• Pakistan Year Book (1969) refers to the competition as Ayub Trophy.
• Illustrated Weekly of Pakistan in 1969 refers to the competition as Ayub Trophy writing:

  The appeals, the change of fixtures, the various troubles during Quaid-i-Azam and Ayub Trophy matches all point to the fact that the game was in great distress. But real trouble began during the Ouaid-i-Azam Trophy final this year between ...

Moving on to the 1970s:

• British Cricket researcher and historian Rowland Bowen in his book Cricket: a history of its growth and development: throughout the world, a quote "magnificently learned work", refers to the competition as Ayub Trophy.
• The Statesman in 1971 refers to the competition as both Ayub Trophy and Ayub Zonal Trophy writing:

  The K.C.A. teams had won the Quaid-i-Azam Trophy as well as the Ayub Zonal Trophy for years in a row. The Ayub Trophy, which has now been replaced by the B.C.C.P. Trophy, had been won by the K.C.A. throughout, except for its inaugural ...

• Pakistan's Book of Cricket Records (1971) refers to the competition as Ayub Trophy.
• Teenager in 1973 refers to the competition as Ayub Trophy writing about Wasim Bari:

  It was then that the Karachi team spotted 16 year old Wasim Bari of the Cantonment Public School. ... Bari became an instant success and with his help the Karachi team won the Ayub Trophy.

• The Illustrated Weekly of India refers to the competition as Ayub Trophy writing in January 1975:

  More recently FIVE of the famous Muhammad family, Wazir, Hanif, Mushtaq, Sadiq and Raees, all appeared together in an Ayub Trophy match in 1961, three of the brothers representing one side and two the opponents.

• Sporttimes in 1978 writing about Talat Ali's 1967 First-class debut refers to the competition as Ayub Trophy.

Later sources include:

• Scottish sportswriter Patrick Barclay in his Puffin Book of Cricket (1987), refers to the competition as Ayub Trophy.
• Zahid Zia Cheema in his Majid Khan biography Majestic Khan (1996) refers to the competition as Ayub Trophy writing:

  I first saw Majid on a cricket field in Lahore when he was representing the Lahore Cricket Board, against KCCA whom I was representing in the Ayub Trophy Final in 1963-64. He was then only eighteen but even then there was no mistaking ...

• Collins Gem Cricket refers to the competition as Ayub Trophy.
• Pakistan & Gulf Economist in 1999 writing about Javed Miandad's older brother Bashir Miandad refers to the competition as Ayub Trophy:

  Eldest of five brothers, Javed being the third, Bashir in his own rights was a seasoned cricket player who played Ayub Trophy in the late 1960s.

• British journalist Peter Oborne in Wounded Tiger: A History of Cricket in Pakistan (2015) refers to the competition as Ayub Trophy writing:

  Another tournament began in 1960/61, the Ayub Trophy, and became a fixture, for as long as Ayub was president. The traditional QuaideAzam Trophy had been scrapped for the season as Pakistan and the small pool of its best players were ...

• White on Green: A Portrait of Pakistan Cricket (2016) refers to the competition as Ayub Trophy:

  In 1960/61, the BCCP introduced a new competition intended specifically to spread firstclass cricket beyond the big cities of Karachi and Lahore. They named it the Ayub Trophy – so that the new teams and their supporters would associate their ...

Turning from book sources to news sources we find:

• "The Ayub Trophy went, the Patrons came, and now it is the President's Trophy."
• "It was a first class match in Pakistan, played between Pakistan Railways and Dera Ismail Khan. Though this first class tournament is called The Patron’s Trophy now-a-days, back then it was known as the Ayub Trophy. The three-day match was played in Lahore’s Railways Moghalpura Institute Ground and it started on 2nd December 1964."
• "Raqibul Hasan Sr (...) was the first Bangladeshi to play for a representative Pakistani team, (...) and he also took active part in Bangladesh’s freedom struggle in 1971. Abhishek Mukherjee looks back at the first significant name in Bangladesh cricket. Wartime cricket: Dark clouds of Civil War loomed over East Pakistan. Ayub Trophy was renamed after Board of Control for Cricket in Pakistan (BCCP), stamping a mark of authority by West Pakistan."

And the list goes on. But finally notice that

• The Pakistan Cricket Board, the organization that is responsible for governing all professional cricket in Pakistan, consistently calls the competition Ayub Trophy for each and every year between 1960 and 1970 where the tournament was held, but in not one single case do they call it "Ayub Zonal Tournament" in their database. A search on PCB.com.pk returns zero hits on Ayub Zonal Tournament.

Obviously this is not a case of PCB not knowing the name of their competition, and of multiple reliable sources (many of them being Pakistani, and in much better touch with reality and facts than a Brit sitting home in England thousands of miles away was in 1963) being wrong when they call it Ayub Trophy. It is a case of Wisden Cricketers' Almanack (1963) being wrong when they call it "Ayub Zonal Tournament" and it is a case of Scyld Berry retailing the mistake years later. As a matter of fact, Berry in his 2015 book Cricket: The Game of Life: Every reason to celebrate corrects his mistake and refers to Ayub Trophy. And, lo and behold, The Shorter Wisden 2011 - 2015 refers to the competition as Ayub Trophy.

So, back to the top, no source has been presented in regards to Ayub Zonal Tournament "showing that it is a commonly used alternate name", it is a seldom used misnomer, and the the probably good-faithed move performed from Ayub Trophy → Ayub Zonal Tournament here was as wrong as the edit summary "this is the correct title, per Wisden Cricketers' Almanack".

IP86.168.218.118 holds the WP:FAIL-opinion that it is "no wonder that Wikipedia retains little if any credibility in academic circles (I am one of a dwindling few who is still prepared to give it a chance)". But in this case, the article was created on 4 July 2007 and for 9+ years correctly stated in the lead that the competition was first played in 1960–61 as the Ayub Trophy and remained so for ten years, thus proving WP:WITS that can be relied on. Right until three days ago when IP86.168.218.118 in Diff of President’s Trophy Grade-I changed the text to read It was first played in 1960–61 as the Ayub Zonal Tournament and remained so for ten years. with the edit summary "correct name is Ayub Zonal Tournament; links added to all names". The edit removed any mention of Ayub Trophy, was WP:UNSOURCED, introduced a WP:REDLINK to the then non-existing Ayub Zonal Tournament, now of course a WP:SELFREDIRECT, and WP:WIKILINKED to BCCP Trophy and Patron's Trophy despite WP:SELFREDIRECT.

May we see a swift WP:SELFREVERT, please? References presented above can be used in the article, and I suggest the misnomers be mentioned in a note with nested references to their sources. Don't hesitate to ask for help.

IP86.168.218.118 did return and edited on 21 August, but never replied here or corrected their mistakes in President’s Trophy Grade-I and Pakistani cricket team in England in 1962. Hello, Sam! Please, help us!! We've made corrections to the English page of Vladimir Okrepilov, but the new version was reduced and got the following comment: "This article is an orphan, as no other articles link to it. Please introduce links to this page from related articles; try the Find link tool for suggestions. (September 2016)". Can you please explain us what kind of links are meant? The second question is why all of his publications, almost all awards and memberships were removed? The last but not the least - is there any Wiki page of any person you would reccomend as the recognized and "proper" one, because we're not sure what kind of information and in which style shall be posted (yes, we have read the Wiki guiadance, BUT...)not to be considered as subjective. 1. Who are "we"? Are you writing on behalf of somebody?
2. Wikipedia:Orphan, the Russian equivalent is ru:Википедия:Статьи-сироты. In this case Vladimir Okrepilov is not mentioned in other articles here on the English Wikipedia. Going to ru:Окрепилов, Владимир Валентинович and clicking "What links here" in the toolbar area we come to ru:Служебная:Ссылки сюда/Окрепилов, Владимир Валентинович. As far as I can tell, the only article on Russian Wikipedia that mentions Okrepilov, and has an article on English Wikipedia is ru:Балтийский государственный технический университет «Военмех» имени Д. Ф. Устинова where he is mention in the section alumni. You could add him to Baltic State Technical University and correct the link to Baltic State Technical University in the Vladimir Okrepilov infobox.
3. The article in this Previous revision of Vladimir Okrepilov looked very much like a curriculum vitae, and I concur with the pruning made by Bgwhite in Diff of Vladimir Okrepilov. Maybe some of the information can be worked into the article again, preferably in prose; bulleted lists are immensely boring and look much too much like LinkedIn, and that's not what Wikipedia aims at. Have a look at Dmitri Mendeleev, maybe that can serve as an inspiration. Hello, Sam! Please, help us!! We've made corrections to the English page of Vladimir Okrepilov, but the new version was reduced and got the following comment: "This article is an orphan, as no other articles link to it. Please introduce links to this page from related articles; try the Find link tool for suggestions. (September 2016)". Can you please explain us what kind of links are meant? The second question is why all of his publications, almost all awards and memberships were removed? The last but not the least - is there any Wiki page of any person you would reccomend as the recognized and "proper" one, because we're not sure what kind of information and in which style shall be posted (yes, we have read the Wiki guiadance, BUT...)not to be considered as subjective. 1. Who are "we"? Are you writing on behalf of somebody?
2. Wikipedia:Orphan, the Russian equivalent is ru:Википедия:Статьи-сироты. In this case Vladimir Okrepilov is not mentioned in other articles here on the English Wikipedia. Going to ru:Окрепилов, Владимир Валентинович and clicking "What links here" in the toolbar area we come to ru:Служебная:Ссылки сюда/Окрепилов, Владимир Валентинович. As far as I can tell, the only article on Russian Wikipedia that mentions Okrepilov, and has an article on English Wikipedia is ru:Балтийский государственный технический университет «Военмех» имени Д. Ф. Устинова where he is mention in the section alumni. You could add him to Baltic State Technical University and correct the link to Baltic State Technical University in the Vladimir Okrepilov infobox.
3. The article in this Previous revision of Vladimir Okrepilov looked very much like a curriculum vitae, and I concur with the pruning made by Bgwhite in Diff of Vladimir Okrepilov. Maybe some of the information can be worked into the article again, preferably in prose; bulleted lists are immensely boring and look much too much like LinkedIn, and that's not what Wikipedia aims at. Have a look at Dmitri Mendeleev, maybe that can serve as an inspiration. Hello Lourdes. It is a glitch in User:Mr.Z-man/closeAFD2.js, the script that does the relisting. I have seen it happen before, and have now reported it in Special:Permalink/737993844#Glitch when relisting with closeAFD2.js. In this case it may have to do with the fact that the discussion was transcluded in Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Log/2016 August 29 as {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Deep_Stealth_Productions (2nd nomination)}} where {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Deep Stealth Productions (2nd nomination)}} without underscores was expected. Relisted discussions are not removed from the old log, they are just hidden, so when I encounter this scenario, and it is the first relisting, I simply add <!-- in front of and --> behind the transclution. — Sam Sailor 08:33, 6 September 2016 (UTC)

I will post a welcome message on your talk page, and include a notice regarding editing an article about yourself. Please notice that Hagay Mizrahi is about you, but it is not "your page". I'm sympathetic towards trying to WP:PRESERVE articles when possible; I searched for sources writing about you, but returned here empty-handed. The goal is to meet WP:BASIC that says

re: Draft:Pleasure Boat International Travel Formalites

Thanks for your thoughtful consideration. Your recommendation to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikivoyage is noted and I feel that while my project can serve that audience my goal is to actually support legislation affecting the economic contribution of marine tourism and public policy affecting personal freedom.

I was traveling alone in and my boat was confiscated for overstaying a 30 day limit by 10 days. This happen because the information was available to me and the lack of transparency provide cover for corruption. The communist government has changed here and my year detained in the court system has finally resulted in an opportunity to make my case a cause for change.

Government staff has asked me to prepare research to support lawmakers who want to modernize and conform to the world's norms and it was my feeling there was a popular need for the yachting community to work on a definitive reference of this issue.

If a wiki was discoverable, available and significant I feel there would be collaborative interest in maintaining its currency. I obviously am motivated to make a commitment to the cause and publishing here could facilitate important change for a wider public benefit. .

I am ready to continue the direct referencing and to modify the scope of the list if you think I may be eventually successful.

Hello Bart, and my apologies for the delay.

I think your reasoning is sound, the question is just if Wikipedia is the right venue? But, heck, let's give it a go, the best thing that can happen is that I'm wrong, and if I'm right, then you could eventually try Wikivoyage.

Should we start by determining a title for the draft? I poked around in Category:Boating and Category:Tourism that's probably the two places were this list would end up being categorized (maybe in a sub-category like Category:Tourism law).

Since the draft format is in list form rather than prose we are looking for a title along the lines "List of <something> travel regulations". Question is what <something> makes most sense for the average reader. In my draft comment I wrote "yacht", but that's not the best suggestion, is it? "List of yacht travel regulations". In the UK one would maybe talk about "pleasure craft travel regulations". But isn't the more straight forward "boat" good enough? "List of boat travel regulations". Your thoughts? I'm grateful for your interest. It seems I'm having trouble making the most basic decisions here. To avoid bias or controversy in my article I had chosen a list format using a wikipedia list of countries as my template but I also found this Comparison of wiki hosting services suggesting to me that all sorts of comparisons are acceptable at wikipedia and maybe the title should be "comparison of marine tourism laws" or "comparison of country's visiting vessel regulations" .

It seems to me the title goes beyond discovery so I want to consider it carefully. I would like to use "Boat or Yacht" for search engine purposes but fear this words sound frivolous detracting from the serious nature of what I'm trying to do here. While this list will be of interests mostly to travelers I hope it would be relevant to policy researchers also. These keywords could maybe also be mentioned outside the title and in redirects but ill follow your recommendation.

I read Wikipedia:Categorization and now wonder if this may fit a Set Category. Is this a List of Laws? Category:Law lists. Is it geography related? Category:Geography-related lists. I understand the this decision need be made upon leaving the draft space and maybe the category would influence the title.

Exactly, that was why I was looking around in the category structure to see, if we had/if I could find other articles that could serve as an inspiration for what to title your draft.

I think your suggestion of Draft:Comparison of marine tourism laws (or should that be "regulations"?) makes a lot more sense than my suggestion of "List of boat travel regulations" when I think about it now. The "List of" prefix could suggest that the list listed links to individual boat travel regulations by country. Should I move the draft? If yes, to "Draft:Comparison of marine tourism laws" or to "Draft:Comparison of marine tourism regulations"? If a better title comes to mind while you edit, we can move it again. How does that sound?

Ok Sam Sailor I've done my orientation, moved and retitled.

Addressing editor's original concerns I have added another hundred unique references to government sources. However I continue to rely on noonsight.com believing it's comprehensive and highly regarded for accuracy even if some content is anecdotal. The comments are controlled for spam by editors after submission by email.

My hope is that this list would attract contributions and I could help maintain what becomes a definitive collection of rules travellers need. I've left table cells empty where I need help but have seen examples of others using ?.

Hi Risk.manager. You could not know, but when we rename a page, we MOVE it to the new title, we don't cut'n'paste the text. Don't worry, I swapped the titles around, find the draft at Draft:Comparison of marine tourism laws. Let's keep our focus on that title for now. I have merged the newer table from Draft:Country comparison, openness to marine tourism, but please abandon this latter draft.

@Kudpung: You are right, User:Writ Keeper/Scripts/deletionFinder.js is an essential script for anyone serious about NPP. @Kudpung: I know you co-skippered the STICKY work-group (I read through the entire archives of WT:BLPPROD last year to acquire some sort of understanding of how policies and guidelines are developed here), and that you can explain why an initial BLP reference does not have to be indisputably reliable; something that were debated at WP:BLPRFC3 in 2010, and even today can spur discussions, see e.g. Special:Permalink/734840759#BLPPROD in the talk page archives of the good MelanieN.

I did not know about your off-wiki life. "Fireball" you say, ahh! does that bring back memories! After I outgrew the Optimist, I bought a Europe and crewed on a 420 - I never had the weight to trapeze a 470, let alone a FD, although I'd given an arm and a leg to own any one of them back then and sit at the stick. I vividly recall a local sailor importing a Fireball from the UK, we're talking the 1970s here, bright yellow hull it had that contrasted the dark colour of the thickly varnished deck perfectly. And obviously, compared to the Mirror, the training vessel stable of the local sailing club, the Fireball was entirely the dog's bollocks. If I ever get my Beneteau First 47.7 navigated around your neck of the woods, let's go for a sail. And if a piano is at hand, and since you say Wayfarer, I believe I can still do a decent Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen, as well as a respectable rendition of "Im Rhein, im heiligen Strome" in reference to your service at BAOR. I suppose as an academic I ought to be ashamed to say that I never came across Tieck. I was brought up on a force-fed diet of classic and I love to play and improvise around all the popular pieces because they are well known and I like to shock people with my jazz renderings of them (I suppose that's the influence of Jaques Loussier and Keith Jarrett) - I was already being scolded at the age of 12 for playing Glen Miller on some rather famous church organs when I thought nobody was listening.   • mnc (for Manchu) will soon be available as a language code for monolingual text values (phabricator:T137808)
  • Worked on foreign EntityIds in order to be able to use Wikidata's items and properties on Commons in the future (phabricator:T145516, phabricator:T146030, phabricator:T146274)
  • More work on usage tracking UI (phabricator:T145965, phabricator:T143148, phabricator:T145189, phabricator:T144923)
  • RFC discussion about Multi-Content-Revisions - another big blocker for structured data on Commons (phabricator:E273)
  • Ran a bot to mark dates that need a check of their calendar model (phabricator:T105100)
  • Getting unit conversion into the query service soon. We'll start with units for length and then expand based on feedback. (phabricator:T117032)
  • Working on extension to automatically link pages between languages on Wiktionary (phabricator:T145412)
  • Added the value that is responsible for an error in the error message so it can be found and fixed more easily (phabricator:T144303)
  • Working on fix for issue with extremely large or small date values in RDF (phabricator:T146356)
  • Expanding references again in diffs (phabricator:T129836)
  • Unbroke CopyReferences gadget. More work is needed. (phabricator:T142203)
  • Fixed issue with 2 search suggestion boxes showing up instead of 1 (phabricator:T119492)
