My only suggestion for this would be to make 2 overall headings; "Film" and "Television Series", just to separate the two a little clearer. Otherwise, looks good for a list! SkierRMH 17:04, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
Please put some information in this article. If you don't, it is little more than a confusing version of a blank page for a reader. Thanks. Kevin_b_er 07:59, 20 April 2007 (UTC)
- It's ok. It's just that in the 30 minute window it could've been tagged for speedy deletion, then deleted by an admin as being without context. I've seen articles go from being speedy deletion candidates to pretty good articles within a short period of time. A thing I see the writers do is to, as an example, create a user subpage at User:Rosenknospe/Lisa Howard (or similar) and work with it until you are ready to move it into the article mainspace. Now, far be it from me to deter the work of a librarian with a history degree who's writing for wikipedia. See you around. Kevin_b_er 08:26, 20 April 2007 (UTC)
- Also, I wouldn't worry about it too much. I'm just tagging articles which qualify for speedy deletion (think articles like "Joey is awesome and we're friends" or "Intromediatechna is a diversified company which offers services in the understanding of widget management.") when I stumbled upon yours and wondered why you'd left it in that state. If it were to actually happen that an article got deleted between the use of the template and when you actually put in real information and hit save, the next page will alert you that the article was deleted before you hit save and then give you the option to recreate it. Immortal (Highlander)
Thanks, you're quite right. That change was a result of renaming Cues to Cue (theatrical) and then changing all the references, but it really didn't make a lot of sense. I should have stopped to read this one a bit closer. jhawkinson 16:13, 10 May 2007 (UTC)
Highlander = fantasy
Well, it seems you know Highlander a whole lot better than I do. Definitely we can move that to Category:Actors by drama television series.--Mike Selinker 15:02, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
About redirects from Kenny (Kenneth)
Hello, how are you ? After you renamed Kenny (Kenneth) to Kenny (Highlander), (congratulations, by the way, you beat me at that), I changed some links so that they pointed to the new name. But here and here, althrough the article histories show I've changed the link correctly, the diffs show I've done nothing, and you still had to change the links later. Can you explain this to me, I'm perplexed. I do hope I don't do weird things that are out of conscious control ;D Have a nice day Rosenknospe 07:33, 26 July 2007 (UTC)
- Hello! Each of those two articles contained two links to Kenny (Kenneth). You changed one, and then I changed the other. :-) —David Levy 08:06, 26 July 2007 (UTC)
- Of course !!! Good one, LOL Rosenknospe 08:12, 26 July 2007 (UTC)
Re: About Immortal (Highlander)
I re-read your edit and I partly agree with you. I will add the phrase "oldest living" back to it, but the other changes, (removing "For example" and replacing "is" with "and") seemed to break the flow of the paragraph and made it sound really out of place. Thanks for bring it to my attention. Stormin' Foreman 08:35, 26 July 2007 (UTC) (A fellow Highlander fan)

Excessive categorization
Are you removing articles from the wikiproject, or is the category you are removing them from a vestigial connection linking it to the film before the inception of the wikiproject HL? - Arcayne (cast a spell) 16:48, 28 September 2007 (UTC)
Re: About Category:Highlander screenshots, just curious
- Hello,
- About this edit you made, I was just wondering, what's the use of the "+" before Highlander ? Thank you, have a nice day. Rosenknospe 11:11, 3 October 2007 (UTC)
The reason I did that is because Category:Screenshots of films has a (somewhat common) problem: it's too big, and this results in its contents occupying many, many screens (only 200 articles or categories are shown per screen). To make its subcategories easier to find, it is common practice to use a prefix, which gets them to show up on the first page. See Category:Screenshots of films for the result. --Eliyak T·C 14:31, 3 October 2007 (UTC)
Question about the Gathering kick-off
I am not concerned about this edit, but the paragraph where the edit occurred has me a little concerned. Can you cite where "In Highlander: The Series, the Kurgan's death effectively kicked off the beginning of the Gathering. "? That's a pretty significant statement, and I think it needs citation or removal. - Arcayne (cast a spell) 18:24, 8 October 2007 (UTC)
Footnotes
Dear Rosenknospe, thanks for the edits on several articles related to German archaeology.
I appreciate all corrections of typos, orthography and such, and (obviously) of content but to be honest, I would have prefered leaving the footnotes inside the punctuated sentences. I know that having them outside is more common on wikipedia, but in my opinion, it affects the readability negatively. Also, it does occasionally lead to orphaned footnotes at the end of paragraphs.
From the style manual [[1]]:
- "Frequently, a reference tag will coincide with punctuation and many editors put the reference tags after punctuation (except dashes), as is recommended by the Chicago Manual of Style (CMoS).[3]
- Some editors prefer the style of journals such as Nature which place references before punctuation. Each article should be internally consistent, and editing solely to change from one style to another throughout an article is deprecated unless there is a consensus to make the change."
I'll leave the changes as they are, though, as it's not worth the effort to change them back.
Vielen Dank, and please do continue to copy edit my contributions. They need it. athinaios 10:15, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

LOTD proposal
You have nominated a recent successful WP:FL. There have been two recent proposals to begin a List of the Day feature on the main page, which have both received majorities but have not been approved as overwhelming support sufficient for the main page. WP:LOTDP is a new proposal to try to get the ball rolling based on the original proposal. Voice your thoughts on its talk page.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 21:06, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
Featured List of the Day Experiment
There have been a series of proposals to initiate a Featured List of the Day on the main page. Numerous proposals have been put forth. After the third one failed, I audited all WP:FL's in order to begin an experiment in my own user space that will hopefully get it going. Today, it commences at WP:LOTD. Afterwards I created my experimental page, a new proposal was set forth to do a featured list that is strikingly similar to my own which is to do a user page experimental featured list, but no format has been confirmed and mechanism set in place. I continue to be willing to do the experiment myself and with this posting it commences. Please submit any list that you would like to have considered for list of the day in the month of January 2008 by the end of this month to WP:LOTD and its subpages. You may submit multiple lists for consideration.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:LOTD) 21:57, 16 November 2007 (UTC)
Thanks ...

Best wishes, <KF> 20:14, 24 November 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the head's up on that. I re-marked the image in question as unsourced & will watch it. Without source, it will be deleted. If properly sourced, it looks bad enough to be a non-professional image! I did remove a chunk of un-sourced material so as to be in line with BLP. There's not enough vandalism to warrant a protection as of yet. However, if this continues, let me know & I'll put it on the protect list request. SkierRMH (talk) 17:02, 1 December 2007 (UTC)
Secret Societies
The article in question is in one of the subcats of the Category:Secret societies, which does place it within the scope of the project right now. One of the real problems with several "secret societies" is that there isn't a hell of a lot of evidence to indicate that even some of the better known ones ever actually existed. The Priory of Sion, among others, comes to mind here. On that basis, it seems reasonable to include fictional secret societies as well, particularly since they may be at least somewhat referential to other real or allegedly real secret societies, and we might be able to clarify the content, maybe include a few relevant links, or perhaps improve at least some of the content better than some others. Also, the article is now placed on the admittedly very small project's watchlist, so individuals involved might be able to help ensure the article isn't vandalized, however often that might happen. When and if I ever get time to spend much real time on the project, one of the things I hope to do is work on the categorization, as the categorization trees generally get confused, confusing, and ultimately all but incomprehensible. I do think that there is reason to believe that there are enough articles to create a Category:Fictional secret societies, but this project would probably be the only one which would know of all those articles. Anyway, personally, I don't think that the article is of such importance to the project that the project would get angry if the banner were removed, so feel free to act as you see fit. Request for help
I would like someone to oversee and proofread the template I am currently creating to standardize lists of fictional characters. I need help because I don't really understand what I'm doing, I've just shamelessly stolen the code from Template:episode list ;D The most important problem is the anchor. I want this template to work so that characters on the list can be linked from other pages, that's the point of it all. I currently use numbers but that's not satisfying.
Once the template is working properly, I'll need help to get it going, start a template page, write the doc and so on (is there an approval committee for templates ? no idea). The template code is at User:Rosenknospe/Sandbox3 and an attempt at doc is at User:Rosenknospe/Sandbox. The first table at User:Rosenknospe/Sandbox2 offers an example of how it should look like. Thank you very much to the nice person willing to help me. Rosenknospe (talk) 09:43, 10 December 2007 (UTC)
- Are you trying to make a list of every single fictional character ever created? If so, this is too impractical; it would be better to create lots of smaller templates broken into groups of fictional characters (eg. Simpsons characters or Looney Tunes characters) rather than every single fictional character. Also, if there are lots of pages that fit under one heading, you could create a page titled "List of ...", with the appropriate title and, within that page, you could list all the appropriate pages. On the pages that are linked from your new page, you could put at the bottom "See also: List of ..." to link the page to the entire list. Hope that helps! Re: Could you help me....
I tweaked a bit of the code to make it more wikitable-friendly, but it seems as though it should work out just fine! I can't quite figure out why the Appearances column is acting so oddly in your draft, but it shouldn't be too much of a problem. I'm sure it's something simple that I'm just not seeing. I've also added an optional code to include a picture of each character, since it seemed you weren't really using the Image parameter. You can see how it'll work with all parameters active in my sandbox here: User:Hersfold/Hersfold's Sandbox. The one thing you have to be careful of is the number of parameters used - they have to be the same in every row or you get these funny blank spaces. If you don't want to use a parameter, throw in a to force it to be blank. Check this diff for what I mean: [2] (I didn't use a nbsp there, but it's the same basic effect). I'll try to update your doc later tonight or tomorrow - if it's not done by the time you get back online, send me a reminder, as I've likely forgotten. Good luck with your list, it looks like a FL candidate for sure once it gets finished! Hersfold (t/a/c) 22:57, 15 December 2007 (UTC)
- Right, I'll get the doc shortly. Sorry, I knew I'd forget.
- You should be able to use it that many times. Some rather unscientific testing in my sandbox shows that you should easily be able to use the template as many times as you need, provided you don't write a full length essay for each character (which you shouldn't do anyway, of course). It doesn't contain too much complex code, and the only other templates it invokes only have a few characters each.
- Unless you plan on making the table sortable, I really don't see why you'd need an anchor anyway. Maybe I'm being weird and missing something, but it can probably just be removed. I'll leave it up to you just in case.
- Yes, I changed around some of the code. The text that was appearing doesn't really affect anything, but I've enclosed the whole mess in <includeonly> tags so it doesn't display anymore.
- Eh... no. I can toss in an image size parameter, but it'd reduce the standardized appearance and it's probably best to simply include more text anyway. Since the pictures will mostly be fair use, it's best to save them for the characters you have more info about anyway.
- I can't for the life of me figure out why the heck those cells won't do the vertical alignment properly. I've tried everything I can, and even fixed some things that shouldn't need to have been fixed, and it's not responding to any of it. The changes I've made SHOULD work, and I only see the error occurring in that one table - everywhere else I've tested it, it's properly aligned. It's making absolutely no sense to me. If you really want to get it fixed, I'd recommend asking one of these four people or bringing it up at the tech village pump. Hopefully someone knows how to get it to work right. If they don't, then file a bug report and let the developers figure it out. Sorry I couldn't get it done for you. Hersfold (t/a/c) 18:52, 17 December 2007 (UTC)
- Oh, ok. That plan should work out - I hadn't even thought of using the anchors in that way, and unfortunately, no, I really don't know of any other way to do that. You could possibly make the anchors invisible by replacing the visible {{{Number}}} with , and just leaving the parameter in the code as it is.
- That doesn't make any sense either, and has me even more confused. Just to let you know, I fixed a link in my last message - you may also want to check with one of these four people if the village pump doesn't produce any results. They're (supposedly) really good with coding and such and might know why the table is misbehaving the way it is.
- Anyway, you're more than welcome for the help. I enjoy getting these random calls for help on my talk page because they're usually quite a challenge and far more interesting than the repetitive questions at the Help Desk. Merry Christmas, and good luck with the template. :-) Hersfold (t/a/c) 18:06, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
Hi there, and Merry Christmas! I've had a look at your code and it's set off a huge number of warning bells in my head. Basically your code will do what you want it to if, and only if, the end user puts everything in exactly as you want it to (and as you noticed, even then nothing is guarranteed). If they miss anything or make any mistakes, it'll screw everything up. For instance, by enclosing the new-cell templates {{!}}
inside the {{#if:
parser functions, you ensure that no blank cells are displayed. Fair enough. But if, for instance, someone forgets to add the "Number" parameter, or misspells it, or even uses lowercase rather than titlecase, no value is displayed, and no cell is created. But that means that the "Name" field is displayed in the "Numbers" column, the "Title" field in the "Name" column, and so on. I can't find the exact source of the wierd formatting you notice when the "Years" field is excluded, but I'm almost certain it stems from this unstable structure. As you found, in order to get things to line up correctly, you had to insert complicated <span display=none> tags into parameters that you intended to be blank, which resulted in the display of a blank cell anyway (incidentally, a non-breaking space
would have had the same effect). Regardless, a complete reorganisation is required to ensure that the table structure is relatively durable and idiot-proof.
From various references to Template:character list I infer you are not just trying to create a template for one Highlander-based page, but a general template that can be easily used to create lists of fictional characters for any fictional franchise. This is an idea I applaud, so my proposed solution attempts to be as flexible as possible. I have created new code in User:Happy-melon/sandbox2, which is called at User:Happy-melon/sandbox1. I have tried to make the end result as closely as possible resemble your current layout at User:Rosenknospe/Sandbox2. However, I have added a "fmt=" parameter, which switches the layout of the items of information. Format "1" is what you see at the top, and format "2" is lower down where no images are present. If no format parameter is specified, no information is displayed, as it can easily damage the surrounding formatting (perhaps an error message would be a helpful addition). The system easily lends itself to expansion both in terms of the parameters that can be specified ("Race", "Allegiance", etc spring to mind) and the various layouts that could be defined. If you wanted to 'publish' this template you could define a few more parameters and a couple more layouts to enable other fictional series to adapt the template to their own particular circumstances. For your purposes, simply using the two formats I've already defined will enable you to get your list working. I hope this solution is acceptable to you - if you have any questions, comments or criticisms, don't hesistate to drop me a line. Merry Christmas once again. Happy‑melon 16:46, 26 December 2007 (UTC)
- I'm glad you liked the solution I produced. Note first of all that {{episode list}} suffers from exactly the same issues as your original code, and were it not for the full page protection I would pour petrol over it and burn it to the ground. In general, stealing code from similar templates and tweaking it for your purposes is both condoned and encouraged - it's not your fault if you accidentally pick a walking disaster to copy your code from! Adding extra parameters is a good idea as I said, and you went about it in the right way. The reason it now screws up your formatting (and to answer your rhetorical question "what did I miss this time?") is that by adding them to format 1, you cause them to be displayed in all your entries, even though you have not defined values for those parameters. You don't need the Aux parameters, or Race or Allegiance, so don't add them to format 1 - that's your layout. I suggest you create a format 3 with the code that's currently in format 1, and restore format 1 to its original state. Then your revision as of here will display correctly (or more correctly at least). Regarding learning template code, there is a help page at meta:Help:Templates, but it's not very good (I've been thinking of rewriting it for a while now). The only way to really learn the syntax is to practice, with someone to correct you if needed. To that end, while I'm only a question away, I don't intend to do this for you. "Give a man a fish/teach a man to fish", and all that. Have a play around, change just one thing at a time, and keep looking at how it displays on your other page. If you have any problems, let me know. Happy New Year. Happy‑melon 17:39, 29 December 2007 (UTC)
