Question

[edit]

Can I ask what your scheme is with the pages about Dave Miller? I reverted one that looked like page blanking and want to make sure I know what's going on so I don't screw something up. Thanx 68.39.174.238 05:05, 25 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

This message is regarding the page David Miller (singer). Please stop. If you continue to vandalize pages, you will be blocked from editing Wikipedia. Please note that unexplained page moves and blanking are also considered vandalism. --Nlu 05:20, 25 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding the page David Miller (singer), and for any future RC-patrollers, I do not believe the edits in question were intended to be vandalism. See Rosameliamartinez's comment here. Cheers. --PeruvianLlama(spit) 05:26, 25 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

WRT David Miller

[edit]

When 2 or more people have the same name and the level of notability isn't drastically different (EG. George Washington will probably always be about the historical figure, and anyone new with that name whould get something like George Washington (playwright)) what ususally happens is the main page (David Miller) becomes a disambiguation page which then lists everyone with that name and who they are and the people themselves get pages like David Miller (singer) and David Miller (politician). 68.39.174.238 05:23, 25 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

PS. Don't worry too much about the warning above. We get a little jumpy @ times. If you do get one, just ask the warn-er what looked suspiscious to them and why you think it was legitimate.

David Miller disambiguation page

[edit]

If you want David Miller to be a disambiguation page, I suggest you move the page that's there now to David Miller (singer) and then change that page to redirect to David Miller (disambiguation). 68.39.174.238 05:32, 25 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

PS. When you're talking on someones talk page, add 4 ~s at the end so people can easily see your username and talk page. It's also the second button from the left at the top of the window you type stuff in (Whatever its official name is).

David Miller page duplication
[edit]

If the 2 pages (David Miller and David Miller (singer)) are the same, replace David Miller with "#REDIRECT David Miller (disambiguation)" and then edit the disambiguation page so that when someone clicks on the singer, they go to David Miller (singer). Hope that makes sense. 68.39.174.238 05:52, 25 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry I was ambiguous there, I meant edit the articel David Miller and replace ALL its contents with "#REDIRCT David Miller (disambiguation), and then change David Miller to David Miller (singer) on the disambiguation page. 68.39.174.238 06:14, 25 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
OK I didn't realize that [[]]s don't show up normally. If you want to redirect you have to use [[]]s to link to the page to go to. So it should be #REDIRECT [[David Miller (singer)]] to get it to work right. Also, when you've gotten the pages worked out, don't forget to check and make sure that all the "Talk" pages are set up correctly (EG. Not containing the comments for a different page or redirecting to some other page). Thanx again 68.39.174.238 06:21, 25 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

One last thing

[edit]

Whenever you're doing a major edit or especially a page move, I STRONGLY suggest you make some relevant comment in the "Edit summary:" area as to what you're doing and/or why. If someone sees an edit or move with a understandable, grammatical and clearly spelled edit summary that give it (And by extention you) a MUCH higher feeling legitimacy from the initial contact, as opposed to vandals who rarely make good comments. 68.39.174.238 06:43, 25 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

;D! Don't worry, the whole point of User talk: pages is to talk! So long as whatever's there isn't egregious you can do about whatever (Just be carefull about deleting stuff on there to clear it up). Anyway, the time difference is atrocious here so I'm going to sleep. I'll be back on tomorrow or the day after @ the latest if you want to say something else ;D 68.39.174.238 07:20, 25 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism is generally associated with any counterproductive action on a page, despite its actuall definition (Connotation v. Denotation). Also, some vandals will try and sneak their attacks through as newbie-tests to see what happens. Also, page moves (Which is what you got "caught" with) are extremely closely watched, thanx to this dude. User tests (Adding minor text in non-sandboxes) generally gets warned with {{test1}} which tries to convey a sense that the first "infraction" was just a possible misunderstanding and there are places to do test edits. However some edits that are borderline (EG. Section-blanking with no edit comment) generally depend on the user reverting/warning and the page's history (EG. A possibly vandalistic edit to Vincente Fox is generally less likely to be purposeful vandalism then one to Hugo Chavez (Which is surprisingly rarely vandalised though) or George W. Bush (Which is under constant attack)).

My "vandalism" warnings were mostly mistakes, I reverted another IPs' vandalisms and the warn-er got the two mistaken (Which is very easy to do if the vandal was using Comcast also).

I don't entirely understand people's asking me to get an account either. There are advantages, however the precise reason seems to vary from person to person and I occasionally get snatches and glimpses of the individual reasons.

The other 2 got answered above.

The "barnstars" are generally randomly given, although some require certain circumstances (IE. You have to do major work on getting an articel to "Featured" (IE. Really good) status to get that award. Other then that if someone thinks you're doing a really good job @ something they'll give it to you. If you see something that someone did that you really really like you can find the appropraite one and slap it on their usr(talk) page(s) with a comment. Unless you really go wild with them I don't think you can get censured for awarding them. Full infos: Wikipedia:Barnstars.

I whouldn't make too concerted an effort to guess, it's not a too terribly common name (Except possibly for my middle name).

Administrators, like all people of power, make enemies without really trying, ∴ people who try (By reverting vandalisms, which is what he does) get enemies like crazzy. Some go far enough to do that. That particular usr has been blocked for about a day for doing crap like that. I suspect he'll be blocked indefinately within the week for nothing but vandalisms. 68.39.174.238 06:53, 1 December 2005 (UTC) (Glad you remembered to sign ;D)[reply]
Admin? Who's an admin? But "person of power", I like the sound of that. Mmm... I'd like to self-nominate for RfPoP, please! But yes, the vandals tend to get cranky when you revert their cleverness, like "LOLOMGZ PWNT!!!1" or "George Bush is a dick!!", or what have you. But such is the beauty of a Wiki; that no matter how nasty, no matter how determined, and no matter how angry the vandals, all of it can always be undone. --PeruvianLlama(spit) 07:06, 1 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I was just visiting and I saw someone had vandalized your head shot and had written something nasty so I deleted the image since I don't know how to return it to the original...Rosameliamartinez 06:33, 1 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Rosa! I really appreciate it - and yeah, a couple people let me know (through outside-the-Wiki channels) that it had been vandalized, so I reverted the image to its rightful state shortly thereafter. To turn this into a learning experience.. (*grin*) .. you can revert images in much the same way that you revert articles. Check out the history for my "head shot" here [1], and by clicking on one of the "rev" links next to each version, you can revert the image to that older copy. To preview an older copy, click on the date/time (same as with an article when looking at its edit history). And while I'm here, thanks for the wikithanks/flower the other day! 'Twas very kind of you. If I can ever be of any other assistance, do leave me a message. Cheers! --PeruvianLlama(spit) 07:02, 1 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hola, thanks for the advice. I do need your assistance with this little strange question. How many people does it take to revert a vandalized pic to its original?Rosameliamartinez 07:20, 1 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Is this like "How many Wikipedians does it take to screw in a light bulb"?  ;) --PeruvianLlama(spit) 07:33, 1 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

No, it wasn't meant to be a joke lol it was just something I noticed...BTW, is there really a comic answer to how many wikipedians does it take to screw a lightbulb? Rosameliamartinez 07:37, 1 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

If there is I'd say 3...one to screw the light bulb, one to vandalize the light bulb and one to revert it to its original lolRosameliamartinez 07:38, 1 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

LOL! Nicely put!  ;) I don't think there was a joke before, but there certainly is now! To answer your question then, it only takes one person. If you wanted to revert the image right now to the previously vandalized version, you could (but don't :P ). Changing content on Wikipedia can always be done by anyone; the only actions that are limited to admins are those that involve removing content, like deleting an article or blocking another user. --PeruvianLlama(spit) 08:35, 1 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, I saw you said something about being a "RfPoP" in my talk...what's that?Rosameliamartinez 07:33, 1 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, that was a bit of a joke as well. To become an administrator on Wikipedia, you have to go through this process called "Requests for Adminship" (commonly abbreviated as RfA). You can either nominate yourself, or someone else nominates you (often with your permission), and then the community at large can vote Support or Oppose. The process lasts a week (I think), and then at the end if you have a majority of Support votes (75%-80%, or greater) you are made an admin, with all the rights and priveleges thereof. So when 68.39.174.238 mentioned "Person of Power" alongside adminship, I was changing RfA to RfPoP. --PeruvianLlama(spit) 08:35, 1 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ohhh...RfPOP lol. When you say 70% or 80% in support that's a total of how many people more or less? I mean, I know a lot of people browse through wikipedia, but how many have to vote for you to become an administrator?

Also...are people allowed to publish stuff in wikipedia that can be found elsewhere?...news etc...I think I found an article about a colombian festival and I recognized where it came from...does it matter if the author has copyright or not?Rosameliamartinez 08:50, 1 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

No, sorry, not 75-80% of the entire population - just 75-80% out of the people who voted (either Support, Neutral/Comment or Oppose). I'm not sure if there is a minimum number of people that are required to vote, but I haven't seen many with fewer than 20ish people, and some will get 30, 40, a very few even up to 100. How it all works is outlined in the intro section on the RfA page.
As for publishing stuff that can be found elsewhere, well, yes and no. You can't copy something verbatim from another copyrighted source. You can however, rewrite the content in your own words, and submit that to Wikipedia, so long as you credit your source. If you think you've found an article that violates copyrighted content, you can read what to do about it here. If you need a hand, let me know! Cheers. --PeruvianLlama(spit) 04:39, 2 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

About the colombian festival ( Vallenato Legend Festival is the name of the article), the person had just taken what it said in the official website in spanish and translated it; what tipped me off was the fact that some fairly complex phrases (normally used by spanish speaking journalists) were used but the translation was soooo moronic...it obviously had to be an unskilled writer translating something done by a skilled one...and trust me, it wasn't rewriten, it was (or tried to be) word by word, the result being pretty awkward. I just deleted it and explained in the edit summary and the discussion, giving the link to where exactly to find the article...Rosameliamartinez 08:53, 2 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, you "blanked" the article, as opposed to "deleting" it (only admins can do the latter). And blank pages are almost always discouraged on Wikipedia. I'm not exactly sure on the policy for copyright across languages, but I don't think they hold - so whoever holds the copyright, probably only holds it for the original (Spanish) version. In the future, if you find copyrighted text (copied verbatim from a website, for example) you can follow the procedures outlined here. But for this specific article, since you clearly speak both, why not re-translate it yourself? It certainly won't be any worse off than it was before! :) The main thing is that the article isn't left blank; if you feel it needs to be cleaned up, but don't have the time to do it youself, you can add this tag to the top of the page:
{{cleanup-date|December 2005}}
That will flag it as needing attention from an editor, and hopefully someone will get to it before too long. Cheers! --PeruvianLlama(spit) 09:04, 2 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Really odd

[edit]

Depends on your definition of "odd". I have some strange/unusuall things, but they're crap like the Alabama State Constitution or the Pennsylvania State Board of Censors. Do you have any infos on the city? Some cursory Googling didn't turn anything up but LaRouche crap! Anyway, it sounds like Berwick-upon-Tweed, except that's in England not Colombia. I suspect there's a list of strange wars out there/here somewhere, and I'll try and find it. 68.39.174.238 03:05, 3 December 2005 (UTC) PS. Minor English note, the phrase is "declared war ON [Whatever country])" although occasionally you'll see "declared war against [them]".[reply]

I don't know, did they? My Spanish is extremely limited so I can't tell if that page says they did. As to Uncyclopedia, I've done some stuff awhile ago. Anything from Comcast's IP block (68.) is possibly mine. Uncyclopedia:Zork I seem to recall doing some stuff for back when you couldn't get beyond the teleporter and it didn't have that black background (Wow that place has changed...). 68.39.174.238 02:34, 4 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Esperanza!

[edit]

Welcome, Rosameliamartinez/Archive 1, to Esperanza, the Wikipedia member association! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.

Now that you are a member you should read the guide to what to do now or you may be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is the StressUnit, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. Redwolf24 runs the spam to keep members up to date. Also, we have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.

In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Possibles.

I encourage you to take an active voice in the running of Esperanza. We have a small government system, headed by our Administrator general, Celestianpower, and guided by the Advisory Committee comprised of KnowledgeOfSelf, JoanneB, FireFox and Titoxd. The next set of elections will be in February, and I would be glad to see you vote, or even consider running for a position.

If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or general ideas, Esperanzian or otherwise, know that you can always contact Celestianpower by email or talk page or the Esperanza talk page. Alternatively, you could communicate with fellow users via our IRC channel, #wikipedia-esperanza (which is also good for a fun chat or two :). I thank you for joining Esperanza, and look forward to working with you in making Wikipedia a better place to work!

How to stop vandals

[edit]

"Hola, I figure this is a common question but, asides from treating vandals nicely and reverting vandalism...is there any coercitive way from stopping a user from vandalizing? I mean, see all of user's 217.127.192.219 "contributions"."

Administrators have the ability to block a user or IP from editing, which makes them unable to edit pages. However blocked users can still read pages and edit their talk page. If a registered user is blocked the IP address of that user will be automatically blocked for 24 hours. There is a log of blocks here. Adminstrators can also protect or semiprotect a page, to prevent all users(if the page is protected) or only users who have been registered a while ago(if the page is semi-protected). Happy editing!

Prodego talk 01:15, 18 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

HEY! Talk page spies! Anyway, yea the most common method of coercion is to just block them if they don't stop. Most will get bored. A few are persistant. Occasionally they get so bad they get referred to their ISP (Which usually goes nowhere because ISPs listen to about 1 * 10^-6 complaints and investigate and respond to even fewer. As to that IP, I left a note on their talk page. 68.39.174.238 03:39, 18 March 2006 (UTC) (PS. You have to add a "User:" space prefix to IPs when linking to them)[reply]

Wow, my retinas might not recover from the colour of this talk page.. ;) I stopped by to thank you for the barnstar, it was very thoughtful of you! I took a week or two off from the Wiki, so when I got back your message had been pushed back a bit; hence my late reply. As for the ro: thing that people are writing in articles, I assume that they are linking to the article's translation on a different language Wiki. And as for the "llama" name, no, it has nothing to do with Mr. Neutron - I had the name long before he was around! Cheers. --PeruvianLlama(spit) 09:39, 18 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimedia Colombia

[edit]

¡Hola!

Userboxes.

[edit]

In my opinion, you should consider rearranging your userboxes as they're crushing your "Il Divo" text on your userpage.

Your page really needs to be tidied up. Are you absolutely sure you like it that way? Let me see what I can do with it, then you can tell me if you hate my changes (I'll make a seperate page in my userspace, I won't touch your page unless you like my changes) — File:Ottawa flag.png nathanrdotcom (TCW) 05:10, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, I'll keep an eye out for any further vandalism from said user, and I've added both those pages to my watchlist. If another spurt of vandalism happens and needs immediate attention, then you can alert other anti-vandal-minded admins by posting on the Administrator Intervention against Vandalism page. Cheers! --PeruvianLlama(spit) 23:13, 23 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Beer and Pizza

[edit]

Had an exhausting day in school, for the children didn't want to listen and didn't even think about sitting at their desks and learning german, speaking Spanish and Portuguese and Chinese and French instead - which they're not supposed to do in class - , and their teacher was all upset and frustrated and ... but then I was awarded a Barnstar. I had a pizza and beer to celebrate. Everything's fine now. Thanks, Rosa. Nouly 23:06, 24 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Rosa. I really like what you have done with the Il Divo article. I just wanted to say that i'm willing to help (i'm a fan myself), but I have not idea where to get new info (in the forum the did not seem to be much interest). Colombian Demographics

[edit]

You don't need to try and convince me, I'm not going to get into a revert war over it. I felt that the statement might be incorrect when I read it because I know that Haiti has been cited many times to be the nation with the highest number (perhaps it was percentage) of people of African Descent. Since the statement was also unsourced, I figured that it could be misleading to readers since if someone else read it and felt the same way I did there'd be no way to prove if this was correct or not due to the bit of trivia on Haiti. Also, I thought it seemed out of place in the article, and sounded as if someone had just added it on without really knowing if it were accurate, maybe because of the wording. Of course, if you added it, don't take that as an insult. I wouldn't mind if it was added back, but if it were sourced in some way, I'd feel better about it. By the way, I grew up in Miami but was also born in Cartagena. ;-) -- SmthManly / ManlyTalk / ManlyContribs 04:39, 24 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Civil Team Re: RfC Woggly

[edit]

I recently joined Community Justice and commend ComputerJoe on this creative, warm and critical initiative. There is no reason for conflict if effective, friendly communication is present by both sides. Communication = understanding, understanding = respect and tolerance. At the very least parties can agree to disagree with a smile.

I am presently coordinating a team of civil advocates for my RfC addressing personal attacks and harassment by user:woggly. I welcome you to be a member. Simply read the RFC lodged against me by user:woggly and the RFC which I have filed against her. It's really simple stuff when all of her personal attacks and my (and others) various attempts to resolve any issues are in black and white Wikipedia:Requests_for_comment/Woggly. Please also view the talks pages where Woggly admits to harassment and infers that she will not cease. Thank you for your time and consideration. Best wishes, IsraelBeach 10:12, 29 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there, you're welcome for the reverting of the vandalism. I'm actually not an admin, so I don't have the power to delete pages. Hey. I've protected your user page from editing by non-admins. There is also a level of protection for 'new and unregistered users': I could set that as the protection level if you want? That would be useful if your vandals either don't have an account, or have opened their account recently. Plus, you'd be able to edit your own page! A short Esperanzial update

[edit]

As you may have gathered, discussions have been raging for about a week on the Esperanza talk page as to the future direction of Esperanza. Some of these are still ongoing and warrant more input (such as the idea to scrap the members list altogether). However, some decisions have been made and the charter has hence been amended. See what happened. Basically, the whole leadership has had a reshuffle, so please review the new, improved charter.

As a result, we are electing 4 people this month. They will replace JoanneB and Pschemp and form a new tranche A, serving until December. Elections will begin on 2006-07-02 and last until 2006-07-09. If you wish to run for a Council position, add your name to the list before 2006-07-02. For more details, see Wikipedia:Esperanza/June 2006 elections.

Thanks and kind, Esperanzial regards, —Celestianpower háblame 16:00, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Help!

Hello, i'm not a new wikipedian but also i'm not very old here... i'm also colombian (writing in english ^^; ) and I've noticed you have contributed with colombian articles.

I ask you for help because I've noticed that someone has been vandalizing the List of Colombians article putting rude comentaries, prank names and others.

If you could help this article, it would be nice...since the past article (with the rude comentaries, I took them away) made Colombia look bad as a country.

Unspecified source for Image:Ancoracover.JPG

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Ancoracover.JPG. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. User:Angr 16:15, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A question regarding "I Believe I Can Fly" (sé que puedo volar) by Il Divo

[edit]

Hi Rosa,

My name is Ronan. I'm an Il Divo fan from Canada. I've just read your post on Jay's page on Wikipedia and realize that Il Divo has recorded the track "I Believe I Can Fly" in Spanish. I've listened to a part of it through the internet and I love it very much. I've asked Jay where I could find that song and he just refers me to you. So, can you please tell me where I can get that song? Thank you very much for your generous help. Yrtxc 04:24, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks in advance. I'd really appreciate your help.

Hi Rosa

Is there any possiblity of a renewed link for I Believe i can fly by Il divo as the yousendit link has expired. Many thanks in anticipation..
