Myxocyprinus asiaticus

Nice work on this article- I have been patrolling for hours, and it's the best new article I have seen. Generally, article titles are the English name, and we only use the Latin name if there is no English name. However, this animal has so many common names, I wasn't sure which to move it to. It's slightly different, but thats because I couldn't get that formatting correct, it was much more complicated than what I'm used to. Myxocyprinus asiaticus

Can you please move Chinese high fin banded shark back to Myxocyprinus asiaticus. We have an established naming protocol for fish article names (see here: Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Fishes#fauna_article_naming_conventions). In this case, because Myxocyprinus asiaticus is referred to under a number of common names (high-fin shark, freshwater batfish, wimple, Chinese banded shark, etc.), none of them universally, then the Latin name is favoured. Thanks. It's a great article by the way. I didn't know they were endangered. Because of the risk of becoming established in UK waters, they are banned from the fishkeeping trade here by DEFRA.[2] So I haven't seen one for many years. Cheers, Neale Neale Monks 20:35, 1 September 2007 (UTC)

Commons:Freedom_of_panorama#USA only applies to "publication of an image of a copyrighted artwork". It doesn't say "publication of an image that also include a copyrighted artwork." Commons:Derivative works only applies to a picture of a sculpture. That photo is a panorama image that includes much more than the copyrighted artwork statute. It wasn't deleted; it was renamed and moved back to the English Wikipedia as a fair use image. Look for Image:UN_Swords_into_Plowshares_Statue.JPG. The problem is, I think, that the statue appears to still be under copyright. In that case, your photo and all others of it are indeed derivative works -- although you of course own the copyright to the original elements in the photo. (This means that the photo of it on [[United Nations Art Collection] is mistagged, since it also is derivative of a work copyrighted to someone else and cannot be GFDL.) The statue was made by a Soviet sculptor working in the USSR. Under Soviet law at the time it was made, copyright protection extended to the life of the author plus 15 years. Since the sculptor died in 1974, it would have fallen into the public domain in 1989. However, in 1973 the USSR became party to the UCC and in consequence extended copyright to 25 years after the death of the author. All right; another 10 years and it becomes PD in 1999. However, the USSR fell in 1991, and in 1993 the new Russian copyright law extended it to 50 years after the death of the author. However, the US has long been party to the UCC, which specifically mandates that all work "published" by the UN be protected under US copyright law. (The UCC was promulgated by UNESCO, so that's a valid provision binding on the UN.) Displaying a statue in public constitutes "publishing" it. That provision was put into effect in 1971, at which time it would have acquired the registration US law required at the time. The original term would have been 28 years from that date with an optional 28 year renewal period. Subsequent changes to the law extended the renewal period and made renewal automatic for pre-1978 works. So even if it was PD under Russian law, it's still protected under US law. ADDITIONAL COMMENTS FROM COMMONS: I believe that the sculpture is the main subject of the image and that the image is as such a derivative work of the sculpture. However, the sculpture was published in 1959 and created by Soviet Union citizen w:Yevgeny Vuchetich. Maybe it is Template:PD-US-no notice? Or it may have been first published in the Soviet Union and as such the 50 years pma applies. wikipedia image policies

Hi Rodriguez, I've tagged many of your images for deletion. I think it would help if you reviewed WP:NONFREE to check out wikipedia's nonfree image policies. As a general rule, if someone could take a new free photo of the subject, we can't take a nonfree image of the same thing. That's why we can't accept copyrighted images of living people, existing buildings, recurring events, or types of goldfish. Also, each image has to contribute significantly to the article. That's why, for instance, we probably can't accept the images of all the old UN Tour Guides, because even if we can't take those photos again, it doesn't help the reader too much to have them there. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. Peronal reasons. And my affiliation with the UN Organization. Writing about UN-related articles need permission (for every article). If articles have to be written about these subjects, it has to be them or others other than me who should write/rewrite/or request undeletion of the subjects. While true, I don't find that relevant. The {{db-author}} is a valid speedy deletion criteria. From the couple of articles I have looked at, he's been the only contributor (cats, linking, & formating are not substantive edits). Another way of putting it is that this seems to be primarily an issue between the U.N. and its employee(s). There doesn't seem to be any outright gross violation of WP policy with the articles, so an appropriate judgment of what's best for the encyclopedia needs to occur. That said, both lack of notability needs to be given due weight and the db-self request ought to be a robust tie-breaker in favor of deletion. If they're truly notable, someone will add them back. While I appreciate the position you're in, please understand that we're trying to figure out what is and is not appropriate for the encyclopedia. If the articles that you submitted are notable and appropriate, we can't just go around deleting them all willy-nilly. If they're not notable, then we sure as heck need to get them out. The issue between you and your employer is not something within which we care to be involved, probably. As Studerby said above, we're trying to make a judgment upon what's best for the encyclopedia. In my case, I'm leaning toward speedy-delete on the ones that don't assert notability and AFD for those which are of questionable notability. Technically, the deleted content is still available to admins, and complies with GFDL. Otherwise, we wouldn't be able to delete anything. Everything ever published is still recoverable, unless it has been oversighted. If there are no other significant contributors, and the deletion would not harm the encyclopedia, I see no problem with honoring the author's CSD request. I will argue against that idea. When one nominates a page for speedy deletion, they're still leaving it up to others (and/or the deciding admin) whether or not the deletion notice stands, or if the article gets deleted. My own view, and I should stress this is merely an opinion not a decree of any kind, is that these are borderline notable people at best (and probably not), that the articles were created in good faith under circumstances that nevertheless give rise to conflict-of-interest questions, and that the original creator is making a good faith request now. I see no special reason not to honor that request. I would be very concerned if we get into some kind of weird "gotcha" mode where someone has created an article that perhaps should not exist, and only decide to keep it because they want it deleted. I found the last two (Igor Korchilov and Jean Herbert) to be informative articles about notable people. There shouldn't be any security issues about Herbert, as he is dead. The non-bio articles are notable and interesting. If they are all the work of User:Rodsan18 (and they do seem to be), then an off-wiki discussion to sort out exactly what can and can't be kept should sort things out. I suspect the problem is with material added that might not be available from public sources (eg. lists of interpreters). Such material should be oversighted. See the article history of United Nations Interpretation Service. Any material that is sourced to publically available sources should be kept. One possible solution, to disassociate Rodsan18 from the material, is for a cut and paste copy of the article to be made in his userspace (minus any non-public information and any extra edits from other people), for the original article history to be deleted, for Rodsan18 to release the edited copy in his userspace into the public domain, and for another user to restart the article using that material, with an edit summary like "using author-released public domain copy of edited version of previous article that was deleted".
