Welcome!

Hello, RicciJoy, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or place {{helpme}} on your talk page and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions. Again, welcome! We're just persnickety...

[edit]

Nobody is really having trouble with the site, some of us are just more diligent about the Wikipedia:Policies and guidelines being followed. We are all just editors, just as you have now become, and if you plan to write or make major edits to WP you will nearly always encounter the stricter editors. Our only concern is the quality and integrity of the encyclopedia. You have every right to be WP:BOLD in your editing and question the actions of the other editors, just bear in mind the policies of Conflict of interest and Neutral point of view are two of the firmest policies and I don't want to see someone work hard on an article just to end up having it reverted by someone. :) MikP (wots all this, then?) 23:40, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

PS: The tags are primarily there because the article is heavily edited by a person involved at a high level in the organization. The only way to remedy this would be to involve a third-party to edit or make the re-writes from now on and bear in mind that it I would highly discourage you not to change your username again in order to edit an article with which there have been issues as that is not allowed and might lead to issues with your account. Maybe even a volunteer with your organization could help. If you don't care to go on the talk pages you can ask me anything, we are all the same around here. Please don't feel that anyone is hounding you or there are any phobias, I'm very liberal and very gay.MikP (wots all this, then?) 23:55, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

ha! Thanks, Mike. BTW, the reason I changed the user name was that my first edits were wiped out when I did them under the user name of whatever it was - Victoria Woodhull, I think. When I asked why, someone suggested that it was because my name was the same as the name in the article, so I went in and changed the name.

I'm not feeling hounded....today. Last night it felt like someone was sitting there waiting for me to edit something so they could erase it. You know that thing....just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you! BTW, I blog on Bilerico too.

I'll see about finding a volunteer to go in and do some edits for me. And I've got some folks in WFF who are editing what I wrote anyway. We try to always take a positive position and by the time I finished last night some of what I wrote may have been fairly negative.

Are there any people who "work" here who edit articles like this one? RicciJoy (talk) 02:17, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Technically we're all volunteers with few exception, arguably some editors are paid or otherwise have COI in that they are in some way compensated for their work. This is somewhat problematic but I don't see that trend disappearing and would guess that it's on the uptick. Which brings us to you finding someone else, not all the different, I would say than you simply doing the work. The biggest issue remains keeping things NPOV which someone within an organization may not do. Having stated that we all have bias and a POV so being aware of them is a good step. What you certainly can do is include any links to press coverage of your events and work so others can verify what has been said. Banjeboi 14:08, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

Hi again. I have fixed your most recent edits to Woodhull Freedom Foundation & Federation to put the wikilinks in the proper format - you don't need the full URL just the title of the article in double square brackets - take a look at Help:Link - if you want the link to display text other than the linked article's title, use the "pipe trick" - WP:PIPE. Hope this helps! – ukexpat (talk) 00:36, 17 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. It does help! I'm learning as I go (obviously!)RicciJoy (talk) 12:35, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Archive

[edit]

Hi, I started an archive for you, feel free to revert if it's not to your liking. Banjeboi 18:14, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks - I wondered if everything stayed out in public for the world to see. I don't, though, know how to find my stuff in there. Funny thing is - :) I trust you that it's there. And I appreciate you doing it for me. RicciJoy (talk) 21:21, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Help request

[edit]

{{helpme}}

I'm not sure where "below" is, but I'll go for here. I want to move the page I created in my sandbox to the public and I don't know how. Also, I uploaded an image and would like to make it part of the page I'm creating on Dr. Barnaby Barratt. I have no idea how to do that either.

Hi there! I've moved this down to the end; if you add a new section at the end of talks for new threads of conversation, it's easier.
I am going to look at the pages you mentioned now, and will reply here further in a short time - probably 10 mins. Cheers!  Chzz  ►  22:49, 26 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks so much! Oh - the file name for the picture of Dr. Barratt is Barnaby B. Barratt, PhD, DHS

A minor point if I may: it's best to always sign your comments (four tildes). Cheers, Trafford09 (talk) 23:00, 26 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! I thought it was three, which is what I was using. Here when I do 4, nothing comes up. I'm truly happy for any help anyone can give me with this! RicciJoy (talk) 23:02, 26 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

AH!!! I thought you did it in the edit summary. Now I know better. RicciJoy (talk) 23:03, 26 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

File:Barnaby B. Barratt, PhD, DHS.jpg
OK - let me answer the second question first; to add the picture, put [[File:Barnaby_B._Barratt,_PhD,_DHS.jpg|thumb|{{deletable image-caption}}]] on a line on its own, in the document; that will display just like it does here. For more in this (more options etc), see WP:IMAGES.
I will get back to you on the other question soon.  Chzz  ►  23:09, 26 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. If I don't answer it's because of a conference call. RicciJoy (talk) 23:12, 26 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Making the article 'live' is as easy as copy/paste, however - there are a few things that need improving in this article - otherwise, it's likely to be deleted soon after going live. So it'll be better if we fix them up first.
The most important thing is the referencing. Problem is, at the moment, the only references are to Wikipedia, wikia, and the persons own website. What it needs is, reliable sources - that means newspaper articles or books. You can't use Wikipedia for a reference, instead you would have to add the references that the other article gives. And you can't use anything that is a self-reference. Everything needs to be verifiable.
If I am reading the article, how could I 'verify' that he was born in 1950? (For example). Perhaps there is a book or newspaper that mentions this - then you could reference that.
As to how to make the references, I will add some information on this below; I hope that this will be useful.
For more help, you can either;
  • Leave a message on my own talk page; OR
  • Use a {{helpme}} - please create a new section at the end of your own talk page, put {{helpme}}, and ask your question - remember to 'sign' your name by putting ~~~~ at the end; OR
  • Talk to us live.
Best wishes,  Chzz  ►  23:22, 26 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Chzz. I'll work on those issues and keep it in the Sandbox until I get it right. RicciJoy (talk) 03:22, 27 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

File Copyright problem
File Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading File:Barnaby B. Barratt, PhD, DHS.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the file. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. FASTILY (TALK) 23:16, 26 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The picture was given to me by Dr. Barnaby Barratt. I'm confused about what I would have to do to prove that or how I would indicate that he is the source and it's a free use picture? RicciJoy (talk) 03:21, 27 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

How references work

[edit]

Simple references

[edit]

These require two parts;

a)
Chzz is 98 years old.<ref> "The book of Chzz", Aardvark Books, 2009. </ref>

He likes tea. <ref> [http://www.nicecupofteaandasitdown.com Tea website] </ref>
b) A section called "References" with the special code "{{reflist}}";
== References ==
{{reflist}}

(an existing article is likely to already have one of these sections)

To see the result of that, please look at user:chzz/demo/simpleref. Edit it, and check the code; perhaps make a test page of your own, such as user:YOURUSERNAME/reftest and try it out.

Named references

[edit]
Chzz was born in 1837, <ref name="MyBook">
"The book of Chzz", Aardvark Books, 2009.
</ref> in Footown.<ref name="MyBook"/>

Note that the second usage has a / (and no closing ref tag). This needs a reference section as above; please see user:chzz/demo/namedref to see the result.

Citation templates

[edit]

You can put anything you like between <ref> and </ref>, but using citation templates makes for a neat, consistent look;

Chzz has 37 Olympic medals. <ref> {{Citation
 | last = Smith
 | first = John
 | title = Olympic medal winners of the 20th century
 | publication-date = 2001
 | publisher = [[Cambridge University Press]]
 | page = 125
 | isbn = 0-521-37169-4
}}
</ref>

Please see user:chzz/demo/citeref to see the result.

For more help and tips on that subject, see user:chzz/help/refs.
