Welcome to the 2025 WikiCup!

[edit]

Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2025 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor, we hope the WikiCup will give you a chance to improve your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and the judges will set up your submissions page ready for you to take part. Any questions on the scoring, rules or anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page.

For the 2025 WikiCup, we've implemented several changes to the scoring system. The highest-ranking contestants will now receive tournament points at the end of each round, and final rankings are decided by the number of tournament points each contestant has. If you're busy and can't sign up in January, don't worry: Signups are now open throughout the year. To make things fairer for latecomers, the lowest-scoring contestants will no longer be eliminated at the end of each round.

The first round will end on 26 February. The judges for the WikiCup this year are: Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs · email), Epicgenius (talk · contribs · email), Frostly (talk · contribs · email), Guerillero (talk · contribs · email) and Lee Vilenski (talk · contribs · email). Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Question from Abd na 123 (16:32, 4 January 2025)

[edit]

I have just made an account and it tells me to fix articles (for spelling mistakes) however I don't understand if the program knows there are spelling mistakes why doesn't it fix them automatically --Abd na 123 (talk) 16:32, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Abd na 123: Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! I presume you are talking about your homepage. I don't know how the program works too well, but as to why spelling mistakes are not corrected automatically, I would guess it would have something to do with the fact that it would cause more problems than it would solve. A bot that would correct a common typo might correct that typo where it isn't supposed to be corrected, like with a company name. I can't think of any examples in particular right now, but if you're still confused, let me know and I will think of one. I hope you're having luck with that homepage--if not, check out some of the activities at our task center. Happy editing! Relativity ⚡️ 17:28, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from SsourceCreator (19:22, 7 January 2025)

[edit]

hello, if I want to create a wikipedia page about someone how do I do it? --SsourceCreator (talk) 19:22, 7 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! Please read Wikipedia:Your first article carefully, and WP:BIO might also be helpful here. If you still would like to create an article after you read that and have follow up questions, let me know and I'll be happy to answer them. With that said, I generally recommend against article creation when you're starting out with editing Wikipedia. I recommend editing already existing articles to get a feel for editing and then create an article. To find things to do, you can check out our task center. Cheers, and let me know if you have any further questions! Relativity ⚡️ 00:59, 8 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
