Disambiguation pages
Your recent repair and bug report seem to work. I can find hiccups here and there, but at least 90% is normal again. Minor glitch is the failure of Templates with disambiguation links, usually powered by DPL Bot. Can you take a look in that? Thanks in advance! The Banner talk 20:58, 27 October 2014 (UTC)
- I don't know whether I can fix this without JaGa's help, but please leave some templates un-fixed for the next few days so that I can at least try to narrow down what is causing it. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 09:43, 28 October 2014 (UTC)
- @The Banner: @BD2412: You may as well resume fixing templates. I still haven't identified the problem, but I don't think having a few unfixed templates around will make it any easier (or harder) to nail it down. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 14:23, 1 November 2014 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Bec-d'Ambes (disambiguation)
A tag has been placed on Bec-d'Ambes (disambiguation) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G6 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an orphaned disambiguation page which either
- disambiguates two or fewer extant Wikipedia pages and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic); or
- disambiguates no (zero) extant Wikipedia pages, regardless of its title.
Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time. Please see the disambiguation page guidelines for more information.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. — Bill W. (Talk) (Contrib) (User:Wtwilson3) — 16:38, 23 December 2014 (UTC)
- Deleted. There was originally a disambiguation page at the redirect target, but it was a WP:TWODABS page with a clear primary topic. bd2412 T 17:35, 23 December 2014 (UTC)
Issue with Dab solver
Hi buddy, Is there some technical glitch currently going on with Dab solver? because when i am trying to fix Disambiguation at Articles with the most disambiguation links The new link which openes is showing "No redirect found" with details on page as "We've moved! We're sorry, but the user-supported tool you have attempted to reach did not leave a forwarding URL where we could automatically redirect you."( !dea4u 04:31, 13 December 2014 (UTC))
- Dabsolver is now at http://dispenser.homenet.org/~dispenser/view/Dab_solver. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 11:02, 13 December 2014 (UTC)
- Hi Russ, thanks for sharing the update, But the problem is- Earlier when we use to click on FIX for any particular list in Articles With Multiple Dablinks or at Disambiguation pages with links it use to forward our page to URL where we could automatically correct dabs(Example: https://toolserver.org/~dispenser/cgi-bin/dab_solver.py?page=Lifeforce_%28film%29). But now it can't be done. Now i will have to manually enter article name in link provided by you at http://dispenser.homenet.org/~dispenser/view/Dab_solver & then only i can edit. Please suggest how i could use Dab Solver in easy way without hard labour as i was using earlier?( !dea4u 09:12, 15 December 2014 (UTC))
- Whoever is responsible for setting up those fix lists in the first place will need to update the code so that it calls Dabsolver at its new address. bd2412 T 17:36, 23 December 2014 (UTC)

New to dab'ing
Can I over disambiguate? Like the template says on British folklore (disambiguation)...I'm not sure how to exactly interpret what it says. I want to edit the disambig. page to redirect to Category:British folklore, but that strikes me as probably wrong. Also, should some articles sometimes links to a dab page? If I don't get rid of all 10 or 11 links, say I only do 3 or 4, I should leave the listing alone? Sorry if I'm unclear. Xaxafrad (talk) 07:12, 31 December 2014 (UTC)
- I don't know what you mean about the template on British folklore (disambiguation), but no, a disambiguation page should never be redirected to a category. I'm not sure what you mean by "over disambiguate," either, but WP:Disambiguation has a whole section on what does not belong on a disambiguation page.
- Should some articles sometimes link to a dab page? Yes, but rarely. This is covered in the section on links to disambiguation pages.
- If you can't resolve all, or almost all, of the existing links to a dab page, then don't edit the monthly listing. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 10:11, 31 December 2014 (UTC)

Correcting the spelling of the 'Hurdy-gurdy' category in Commons.
Dear Russ,
Happy New Year; I hope you are keeping well?
You helped me sort out some categories on 12 September 2014 and I wonder if you'd be kind enough to help me once again, please? Thank you in advance for your consideration.
I have been working for some time on the article about the Hurdy-gurdy. One of the changes I wanted to apply to this article (and others associated with this instrument) for quite a while, is to make the spelling of the name conform to the entry in the Oxford English Dictionary: hurdy-gurdy (plural: hurdy-gurdies); that is, with the hyphen.
Our friend ChrisGualtieri has very kindly helped me with renaming the titles of all the relevant articles, but we also need to correct the spelling of the name as it appears in the category, by adding the hyphen: Hurdy Gurdy.
Is this something you could do for me, please Russ? I'd be very grateful to you if you would.
Many thanks for your time and assistance; this is, of course, not urgent, so I will wait patiently for your reply.
Until then, please keep well and happy.
With kind regards for now;
Patrick. ツ Pdebee.(talk) 21:30, 8 January 2015 (UTC)
- Sorry for the delay in dealing with this. I added this, and 3 related categories, to commons:User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands/Category moves. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 11:34, 28 January 2015 (UTC)
- Dear Russ,
- Thank you so much for your most helpful assistance! I particularly appreciate the fact that you've done a complete job, by pro-actively identifying other categories where 'hurdy-gurdy' was misspelt (without the hyphen); thanks a lot!
- No problem at all about delay: it was not urgent and I know you're always so busy.
- With kind regards for now;

Request for advice, please.
Dear Russ,
Please would you take a look at this: Category:Guitar makers?
To me, the long section of text at the top of the page appears to be a misplaced overview of 'Paul Doyle, guitar maker'. I chanced upon this article because of my current drive to locate occurrences of 'hurdy-gurdy' typos (i.e. misspelt without the hyphen), some of which are included in this article.
The user who added the edit is shown in red ink (User:Irishharpmusic) and has only ever made this single contribution (at 19:57 on 15 September, 2014), clearly suggesting a one-off visitor who didn't know how to edit the wiki.
It seems to me that all this text (related to 'Paul Doyle') should either be moved to an individual article (and then seriously wikified!) or deleted, but since I am not an admin, I am reluctant to take action either way.
Many thanks in advance, Russ, for any advice you can offer.
With kind regards;
Patrick. ツ Pdebee.(talk) 17:01, 2 February 2015 (UTC)
- Problem solved. :-) The first-person tone of the text, and lack of any indication of notability, made it inappropriate for inclusion in any article, so I just hit the "Undo" button. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 18:07, 2 February 2015 (UTC)
- That's great, as my first instinct was to do just that! Thank you for your supportive action.

==About your (non)participation in the January 2012 SOPA vote
Hi R'n'B. I am Piotr Konieczny (User:Piotrus), you may know me as an active content creator (see my userpage), but I am also a professional researcher of Wikipedia. Recently I published a paper (downloadable here) on reasons editors participated in Wikipedia's biggest vote to date (January 2012 WP:SOPA). I am now developing a supplementary paper, which analyzes why many editors did not take part in that vote. Which is where you come in :) You are a highly active Wikipedian (35th to be exact), and you were active back during the January 2012 discussion/voting for the SOPA, yet you did not chose to participate in said vote. I'd appreciate it if you could tell me why was that so? For your convenience, I prepared a short survey at meta, which should not take more than a minute of your time. I would dearly appreciate you taking this minute; not only as a Wikipedia researcher but as a fellow content creator and concerned member of the community (I believe your answers may help us eventually improve our policies and thus, the project's governance). PS. If you chose to reply here (on your userpage), please WP:ECHO me. Thank you! --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 16:24, 10 February 2015 (UTC)

Bot functionality query
Hi Russbot. Found you listed at Registered Bots and was hoping you may be in a position to help out on a task.
Would like to change to the more acceptable per the standard naming convention established under Category names. This causes all sorts of mayhem apparently, as each article under the category needs to edited to new category name. There are only about 277 articles in the category, but I don't relish going through them all... Is this something that Russbot could do?
I see it as a manual run, under the existing category name, which changes the category entry in each of the member articles to the new name. Could then change the category name, or that could be done manually on completion of the run?
If not, I can put a bot request at the relevant page. --Haruth (talk) 19:27, 28 February 2015 (UTC)

- You have an odd way of communicating. Be that as it may, the issue here is whether the category should have been redirected, or not. If it is redirected, there is no reason for any page to be in it. If there is a reason for a page to be in it, then it should not be redirected. I have no opinion either way. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 22:17, 5 April 2015 (UTC)
First list request in quite a while.
Occasionally I come across a dab link where the very next word, if included in the link, would be the solution. For example a sentence might say something like "John was from Springfield, Ohio, and was fluent in the Italian language", where the obvious solutions are Springfield, Ohio and Italian language. What I would like, therefore, is a list of all circumstances where the phrase "Foo bar" or "Foo, Bar" appears in an article, where "Foo" is a disambiguation page, and "Foo bar" or Foo, Bar" is a term on that page. I would go a little further, actually, and also list articles containing "Foo bar" or "Foo, Bar", again where "Foo bar" or Foo, Bar" is a term on the disambiguation page. Is this doable, oh mighty one? bd2412 T 17:02, 8 April 2015 (UTC)

Can you please point me to the discussion you're referring to? The talk page had a short discussion with only a handful of contributors and it didn't come to a consensus (though somebody erroneously closed the discussion as such). I understand what a primary topic is, but George McClellan doesn't have one (at least for an American audience) so I'm not sure why it was redirected to anything but a disambiguation page in the first place. Thanks, The Haz talk 18:26, 25 April 2015 (UTC)
- I'm talking about Talk:George McClellan (disambiguation), as you surmised. If you don't agree with the conclusion that the closing admin reached 5 years ago, you are welcome to start another discussion. But it's not appropriate simply to ignore the result of the prior discussion just because you don't agree with the process or the result. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 18:37, 25 April 2015 (UTC)
- Sorry, I didn't think that was the discussion you were referring to (as someone mistakenly closed that one) and I definitely wasn't ignoring anything. It says right at the top of the talk page to feel free to edit it. I generally make fixes across projects as they're needed, but it's not vandalism so it's not worth it for me to argue about it. Proposed deletion of Banishment (disambiguation)
The article Banishment (disambiguation) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- Completely unnecessary dab page. Banishment already redirects to Exile, where a dab is present at the top of the article for the movie.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Raykyogrou0 (Talk) 15:47, 7 June 2015 (UTC)

- Thanks, Russ. I had already reversed it and will stand by that; though I'm glad to learn about linking to a dab from your link above; after SO many no-dab-link-bot chastisements on my Talk page. Your bot replaced just the link to the dab page, leaving the descriptive intro to the single individual's page: No sense to send a reader to the dab when s/he's looking for a specific individual. I will consider using the dab-page-link instead of the individual referrals. - The problem there was GIGO. The link was already wrong before the bot edited it; the bot didn't make it wrong. "No sense to send a reader to the dab when s/he's looking for a specific individual" -- I agree, but that's what your last edit to the page did, too. The dab page is James Rogers, but the individual described in the hatnote is Jimmie Rodgers (pop singer). --R'n'B (call me Russ) 21:31, 9 June 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for sticking with this. First, I HAD missed my own dab link. Surprised and again humbled; the need for care; sorry for the 'clumsy'. Second, you did miss the 'd' in the linked name; now fixed too. May it be finished! Thanks again. Swliv (talk) 15:38, 14 June 2015 (UTC)

But I'd also recommend NOT having a bot doing such clumsy, I have to call it if I understand it correctly, editing as was done in this instance. Open to discussion. Cheers. Recreation of a deleted category by your bot
Today, I restored the deleted Category:Wikipedians who like trigonometry, history merged it into Category:Wikipedians interested in trigonometry, and deleted the resulting redirect. Shortly after I deleted it, your bot recreated it as a category redirect; after I deleted that, your bot created it empty. This isn't the first time I've run into this problem with your bot - a similar issue happenned with Category:Wikipedians who speak Runglish. Please fix your bot to deal with this issue. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 11:40, 16 June 2015 (UTC)
- From looking at the page history, it seems that you were deleting the page at virtually the same moment that the bot happened to reach it in its pass through all the category redirects. I'll check the code to see if there is anything I can do, but it may be impossible to avoid all race condition errors if something happens to the page in the few seconds between when it is loaded and when it is saved by the bot. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 14:12, 16 June 2015 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Inkwell Foundation (disambiguation)
A tag has been placed on Inkwell Foundation (disambiguation) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia.
Sionk (talk) 18:22, 21 June 2015 (UTC)
"Why?"
The question regarding Wikipedia:WikiProject_Disambiguation/Malplaced_disambiguation_pages has been raised on the talk page as mentioned with no reasoned reply given. I do not see why this p/g content should make an unjustified WP:ASSERTion unchallenged. Please undo your revert. GregKaye 18:47, 24 June 2015 (UTC)
- R'n'B was correct. WP:MALPLACED is a project page for carrying out policy. The policy you disagree with is at Wikipedia:Disambiguation#Naming the disambiguation page. The discussion should be there. bd2412 T 19:15, 24 June 2015 (UTC)
- Plus, the way you placed the tag misleadingly implied that you were questioning "why" the disambiguation page was not at the base name, when your actual question (as stated in your edit summary) is "why" the accepted practice is to place disambiguation pages at the base name when there is no primary topic. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 20:32, 24 June 2015 (UTC)
- Re "
misleading
" - In the context of a project page that presents an unsubstantiated WP:ASSERTion regarding "Malplaced disambiguation pages" I placed the why tag after the "is not" claim of the original assertion. This is not explained or justified in the immediate text or elsewhere and I do not see that the why tag was not warranted. Why is an open question as related to causality. It simply asks for justification / substantiation. - All the same I find it quite ironic that I may have misplaced the actual thread. GregKaye 06:09, 25 June 2015 (UTC)

Big Dipper (Battersea Park)
Hi R'n'B.
I saw that you edited out the reference to John Collins in Big Dipper (Battersea Park). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Dipper_(Battersea_Park)
The term big dipper was and still is an English (British) generic term for any scenic railway or roller coaster. The one in Battersea Park was always called the John Collins big dipper after the showman who built and ran it. http://d.pr/i/1g3YI
I'm sorry but I don't know how to reference or perhaps rephrase it better, but without the John Collins, it's essentially saying... "The roller coaster was a wooden roller coaster located at Battersea Park in London"
Thanks for your time, help and consideration.
Best.
Rich. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.148.253.249 (talk) 07:40, 26 June 2015 (UTC)
- The problem was the lack of any reference to a reliable source that used that name. The photo you linked seems to be relevant, but there is no information as to the source (indeed, there is nothing in the photo that necessarily links it to Battersea Park). If you can provide a reference to the source of the photo, or to some other source that mentions the name, then it would be entirely appropriate to include in the article. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 10:11, 26 June 2015 (UTC)
Question
Hi -- I'm not sure this change is correct. It suggests that the judoka is a member of the football club, rather than the general Maccabi athletic club. Best. --Epeefleche (talk) 17:16, 29 June 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks, I've fixed it, although we don't seem to have an article about the athletic club as a separate institution. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 17:21, 29 June 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks -- right ... just Maccabi, which it is part of. It's a bit like having an article on YMCA, but not one particular YMCA club. --Epeefleche (talk) 20:37, 29 June 2015 (UTC)

How about extending the link backwards?
I think User:RussBot/Candidates for disambiguation by extending link has been successful in revealing some easy fixes. Can the same thing be done extending the possible solution to the word before the disambiguation link? Also, occasionally I find piped links where the portion before the pipe is the disambiguation term, and the portion afterwards would be the solution. Earlier today I fixed several disambig links formatted as Nassau, Bahamas. Can you generate a list of piped links where the solution would be the portion after the pipe? Cheers! bd2412 T 19:21, 9 July 2015 (UTC)

Hello R'n'B!
Remember this deletion of Development Dimensions International (DDI)? Funnily enough it was recreated 6 weeks later at 21:37, 17 July 2009.
Interestingly, the DDI page creator Jmb25 (talk · contribs) has only edited that page, that of its co-founder William C. Byham and some related pages. Also interesting is that the most recent edits to the DDI page were both by an editor that also appears as an SPA, having also edited William C. Byham and then in March creating and editing his wife Carolyn M. Byham's BLP.
The most recent edits to Mrs. Byham's page were by yet another account whose (wait for it!) only other edits are to Mr. Byham's BLP. Funny that!
Not so recently (December 2014) the IP 12.108.121.5 (talk · contribs) which a Who-is search [2] reveals is an IP connected to DDI, has also edited William Byham's BLP page! Why am I suspicious?
Anyway I have dropped 'COI welcomes' on the relevant editors talk-pages, and put notes re 'possible' COI on the talkpages of the Byham's BLPs and the DDI talkpage. If there is anything more I should do, or should not have done please advise! Regards, 220 of Borg 12:27, 12 July 2015 (UTC)
- I take it this is not of interest to you? Would the WP:Conflict of interest/Noticeboard noticeboard be the venue? Or is the issue too stale, the most recent relevant edits being in April? 220 of Borg 15:13, 14 July 2015 (UTC)
- I don't regularly follow that noticeboard, so I don't know what would be considered too stale there. You could post and see what happens. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 15:38, 14 July 2015 (UTC)

Drafts with disambiguation links
I have noticed that many new disambiguation links are coming from drafts being moved to mainspace. I think, as a rule, that a draft with linking errors should have those errors fixed before being moved, and am trying to come up with a policy/technical solution (e.g. a requirement to that effect coupled with a bot notification on the draft itself that the draft contains disambig links). What do you think? bd2412 T 18:56, 21 July 2015 (UTC)
- I agree. My usual practice, if a Draft: page comes up in a disambiguation run, is to mark the link with dn on the theory that the drafter ought to learn about ambiguous links and how to avoid them before having their draft published. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 19:06, 21 July 2015 (UTC)
- Can you have RussBot do this for all drafts? I'll work on the policy side. bd2412 T 19:30, 21 July 2015 (UTC)

Ardha Chandrasana
Thanks for your help with my edit there. I believe it's safe to say both obturator muscles (internus and externus) as part of stablization, all layers of the obliques, and the gemellus can be treated as a singular muscle even though it has two parts because they do they same action, they're just seperated by the obturator tendon so they are treated as two (unlike the obturators which have similar actions but move in different directions). Most of those muscles don't need to be differentiated here. Hope that helps. Iṣṭa Devatā (talk) 19:22, 26 August 2015 (UTC)
- Iṣṭa Devatā: thanks. Obviously you are much more knowledgeable on this topic than I am. Given that these muscles are basically singular muscles with two parts, I wonder why we have disambiguation pages at all, instead of an article that describes the function of the combined muscle. Do you have any thoughts on that? --R'n'B (call me Russ) 20:46, 26 August 2015 (UTC)
Hmm...not really. Maybe with the gemellus, but the obturators are pretty distinct. But with biology, anytime I find a classification or division unnecessary, I eventually learn the reason for it later. Layers upon layers. I'm happy to leave that to the biology oriented editors as I'm more of a 'Yoga' editor. Plus there are a lot of other muscles we would need to edit to conform to that standard.Iṣṭa Devatā (talk) 20:51, 26 August 2015 (UTC)
Hi Russ. Thanks for your recent corrections to the content I added to the HP NewWave article. The only one I'm not sure about is the 'Computer Based Training' section, which I used capitalisation with as it was a proper-noun title for one of the NewWave components. I haven't changed it back as I wanted to check on whether there's some way of indicating when a common phrase is being presented in a proper-noun form. Do you have any suggestions? Hi-Peak Internet (talk) 19:53, 25 August 2015 (UTC)
- Frankly, I don't know the answer to that, either. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 12:30, 26 August 2015 (UTC)
- My mistake. I've gone back through some old NewWave literature and found it wasn't a proper name. I've added the missing hyphen and a link but left the capitalisation with your correction. That still leaves the question of how we're supposed to indicate a proper name and protect its capitalisation but that can wait for another day. Cheers, Hi-Peak Internet (talk) 09:55, 29 August 2015 (UTC)
Cities in Belize
Why did you delete "Cities in Belize"? I would like to recreate and populate this category under the Category "Belize".jzsj (talk) 18:52, 30 August 2015 (UTC)
- Actually, I deleted Category:Cities in Belize, and I gave the reason when I did it (back in June 2010): "([[WP:CSD#G8|G8: Page dependent on a deleted or nonexistent page)". The page was a redirect to Category:Cities, towns and villages in Belize, which does not exist. If you follow the second link, though, you'll see that this page was deleted in May 2010 by another user, with the reason given being: "Renamed to Category:Populated places in Belize per Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2010 May 5#More settlements." So there's your answer - the category you want to use is "Populated places in Belize", not "Cities in Belize". --R'n'B (call me Russ) 20:54, 30 August 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks much for the quick answer!jzsj (talk) 21:40, 30 August 2015 (UTC)
Disambiguation tag removal
Howdy Russ. Is there a way to get (or generate) a list of pages that have had Disambiguation removed from the page at some point? I'm thinking of issues like Daily Star, which you restored today. I know that some pages would be false positives (like cleaning up incomplete disambiguation issues), but those could be dealt with (maybe after the check Doncram's new Category:Former disambiguation pages could be added by the checker). -Niceguyedc Go Huskies! 21:32, 4 September 2015 (UTC)
List of professional football players who spent their entire career with one franchise
Hello, Russ. I received your message concerning possible deletion of this page I created. I certainly don't deny that is based on my original research and it's hard to find any sources on the web or elsewhere in which this subject comes up, so I understand your concern. The same happened after I initiated the same list for Major League Baseball players, and I had to make my case for that too. Still, figuring how rare an accomplishment this is in baseball (less than one percent of all the men who have ever played as it turns out, and apparently even rarer in the NBA), I thought it would be interesting to comb through the player profiles on the Sports Reference sites and find out for myself, and eventually share this info with other Wikipedia readers. After a bit of debate on the talk page, I got enough support from other contributors to convince them to keep it, although the article title was changed, which I was OK with. I'm willing to welcome any suggestions you may have as far as other reference sources, and even if this page is deleted, I suppose I can always submit it to Sports Reference.
Oh, yes, I also created the similar page for NHL players. I would have done the same for the NBA, but it seems somebody beat me to it! Josephew (talk) 02:05, 12 September 2015 (UTC)
- I'll concede that the information is true, reflects a rare accomplishment, is interesting, and is not readily available elsewhere. But No original research is one of Wikipedia's core content policies. Either we have policies that mean something, or we just abandon the idea that this is an encyclopedia and let it become Myspace (in more than one way). --R'n'B (call me Russ) 23:10, 12 September 2015 (UTC)
