Mistake: see removal on B. Clark Burchfiel from 18 days ago

I added this link

https://eapsweb.mit.edu/people/bcburch

to Dr. Burchfiel's website at MIT where he is Professor Emeritus. Why was it marked as Vandalism using STiki and removed? Please explain. The reason I added his homepage is because the header for the entry indicated there were page issues and that there was not sufficient evidence that he is a real person (at least that is how I interpreted it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kategans (talkcontribs) 08:22, 22 April 2017 (UTC) Kategans (talk) 08:25, 22 April 2017 (UTC)

@Kategans: Sorry, that was mislabeled as vandalism. A faculty page is an appropriate external link but it should be formatted as a link (within single brackets) with an appropriate title, in the external links section. Feel free to re-add. See Wikipedia:External_links#How_to_link for further guidance. Qzd (talk) 17:51, 22 April 2017 (UTC)

Hello,

This is regarding: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_to_Malik_al-Ashtar.

I have authored a book and shared a pre-publication version with a student of mine. Unaware that it would be a problem to use that material on Wikipedia.org, that student edited the above page using passages and concepts from my forthcoming book.

I have deleted that passages, and I ask that they stay that way. My student made a mistake, and she does not want that material there. I, as the author of this information, do not want unpublished passages from that book on the site. I also want those passages removed from the revision history.

Thank you,

Cyrus.

@Cyruszargar: See WP:REVDEL and WP:CRD. If the edits constitute a copyright violation you can add Template:Copyvio-revdel to the page and an admin will handle the request. Keep in mind this is for blatant copyright violation, not merely the citing of an unauthorized or unpublished source. Qzd (talk) 21:44, 25 April 2017 (UTC)

Dear Qzd, Thank you very much for this advice. I am not familiar with this process, but I will try to do this. Any help is appreciated. With gratitude, CZ. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cyruszargar (talkcontribs) 21:48, 25 April 2017 (UTC)

37 Bomb Squadron

Hey Qzd, I'm not sure how to reliably cite a source for squadron heritage. I've found only one mention of the 37th's motto of Harrumph online, which I will cite next time I edit the page. I'm a current squadron member and its an old part of our heritage that we use on a daily basis, but it dates back to WWII or slightly prior. Hi Qzd, You recently contacted me about the changes I made to Richard Ojeda's page. Let me know if there is anything else I need to do to make this happen. Thank you. Msammon1 (talk) 08:47, 7 July 2017 (UTC)

@Msammon1: Welcome to Wikipedia. Please familiarize yourself with WP:RS, WP:OR, and WP:NPOV. Any added content needs to be backed up by reliable, published sources that other editors can verify. This is especially important on biographies of living persons, so the removal of sources in favor of totally unsourced content will be reverted pretty quickly as you saw.
Likewise, content must be written in a neutral manner. Since you say you work on the campaign neutrality is a concern and sorry to say Wikipedia guidelines discourage editing pages where there is such a conflict of interest; specifically at WP:COICAMPAIGN. Qzd (talk) 04:52, 8 July 2017 (UTC)

UN-Watch is Israeli-Biased and thats not a "Biased" standpoint

My edit shows that UN watch is heavily against anything that may harm Israel, even though when Israel themselves are in the wrong.

The recent decleration of UNESCO saying that Hebron was a Palestinian heritage site caused UN watch to call them "anti-jew" even though the city itself is in Palestine.

This is not a neutral group at all. The group also sides with Israel even when Israel clearly does wrong.

@Winsocker: The group's neutrality on specific issues notwithstanding, to essentially label a subject of an article in the lead as Anything-biased is hardly ever going to be NPOV. The criticisms you cite are one rather small section of the article, thus the addition to the lead is WP:UNDUE. If they are to be added to the lead they need to be contextualized as criticism. Qzd (talk) 08:58, 8 July 2017 (UTC)

UNESCO - Its called Palestine

Stop confusing "Palestine" with "Palestinian Authority". We are talking about the geographical area and not a political party — Preceding unsigned comment added by Winsocker (talkcontribs) 07:40, 8 July 2017 (UTC)

Please advise what is 'neutral' or not.

About earlier Wiki entries failing to note that 'The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp' is anti-Imperial German while biasedly failing to note that historically far older Imperial Britain was often no better in War or Peace.

94.140.175.55 (talk) 09:50, 24 March 2018 (UTC)

@94.140.175.55: The parenthetical in this edit is vague WP:EDITORIALIZING. Whose assertions? Historical analysis can't be made in vague asides, it needs to be contextualized and backed up by reliable sources. The page Republic of China Flag should include the fact that the country has a more commonly and universally recognized name - Taiwan. Hence, the changes I made. Unless you are attempting to make the article political, it should reflect that fact that the country's name is known as Taiwan which can be seen in its mailing address, drop down box selections on various websites, etc. I was looking for a flag of Taiwan and was directed to this article which is why I decided it should more properly reflect the name that it is most commonly used by and would help other users better understand what they are looking at and help them find what they are looking for. The current format seems to skew towards a political bias. 220.134.169.127 (talk) 02:47, 5 July 2018 (UTC)

@220.134.169.127: The flag is for the political entity called the Republic of China, not the physical island. Unsourced?

If you're going to revert this saying "unsourced", I'd rather you not revert at all. Drmies (talk) 12:22, 13 October 2018 (UTC)

@Dino Hassiotis: That's not a sufficient source for such a statement. Without a link, it is not verifiable. Without context, it is almost certainly not neutral and sounds more like personal opinion. "Has worked to take away peoples property rights" is as vague as it is inflammatory. Please familiarize yourself with WP:BLP standards. Qzd (talk) 22:22, 27 December 2018 (UTC)

Original research

Actually, it's a retired professor's considered opinion, and I can certainly provide citations to peer-reviewed journals that validate my assertion. Would those justify the reincorporation of my indispensable albeit provocative material?

No, because it's your personal opinion in Wikipedia's voice. A reliable, verifiable source is one requirement; the other is Wikipedia:Neutral point of view. Qzd (talk) 17:40, 28 December 2018 (UTC)

A message from Liberty5651 about revisions to The Turkish Coffe page

@Qzd: I noticed a revision to the Turkish coffee page. From what I can tell you revised the edit because "Violations of copyright policy:". I had a chance to read it before it was totally deleted. There's some remarkable information there that maybe valid on a different page if it were sourced. Anyway to give it some due attention? IT's certainly controversial because there was an Armenian genocide. Too bad that the user posted from an unnamed IP address because I'd like to know more (and hang onto some skepticism while hearing it.) Liberty5651 (talk) 19:30, 26 January 2019 (UTC)

@Liberty5651: I reverted the edit for being unsourced but it was later revdeleted by an admin for copyright violation. They posted the source in the page log.

Do you want me to post them here?

@217.73.141.172: Post the sources in the article. However, there already seem to be reliable sources in the article indicating disputed ethnic origin. So it would be inappropriate to merely supplant that with your own source stating the matter is settled. See WP:UNDUE. Qzd (talk) 00:14, 4 February 2019 (UTC)

RAID 6 edit reversion

Howdy. I don't have much time (it's Valentine's Day and I'm picking up dinner), but I am sort of a subject matter expert on RAID and the section I edited is simply incorrect. My name is Richard Lary (I'm Googlable, try '"richard lary" RAID' as a search) and you can reach me by email at richard@lary.com or by phone at (Redacted). I am not a regular Wikipedia editor, but this is a pretty egregious mistake and I'd like to set it straight without too big of a fight...

They're called Ladinos not Latinos. Check it out.

Guatemala is populated by a variety of ethnic, cultural, racial, and linguistic groups. According to the 2010 Census conducted by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), about 41.5% of the population is Mestizo (also known as Ladino), reflecting mixed indigenous and European heritage. A similar proportion of Guatemalans (41%) are of full Amerindian ancestry, which is among one of the largest percentage in Latin America, behind only Peru and Bolivia. Most indigenous Guatemalans are of the Maya people, namely K'iche' (11.0% of the total population), Q'eqchi (8.3%), Kaqchikel (7.8%), Mam (5.2%), and "other Maya" (7.6%). Less than 1% are indigenous non-Maya.[181] https://www.ine.gob.gt/index.php/demografia-y-poblacion/42-demografiaypoblacion/207-infodemo2010 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ladino_people

You can revert it back I guess... or whatever.

Thanks. Qzd (talk) 02:08, 24 February 2019 (UTC)

I'm curious. Why did you revert the addition of "Dame" and cite WP:HONORIFIC? While it's true that she isn't a dame, and your reversion was therefore factually correct, if she was then WP:HONORIFIC clearly states the title should be used in the lede. -- Necrothesp (talk) 10:50, 26 February 2019 (UTC)

@Necrothesp: No you're right that's an appropriate use of the title. I actually realized this later and went back but couldn't find anything about her damehood in the article so left it. Sorry for the confusion. Qzd (talk) 02:06, 27 February 2019 (UTC)
No problem. Just wondered. No, she definitely hasn't been made a dame. Presumably just an assumption on the part of the IP, as all Met Commissioners have thus far been knighted soon after taking office. -- Necrothesp (talk) 08:58, 27 February 2019 (UTC)

Hi Qzd,

this is Nino Pereira. I saw just now that you rejected my correction to the English on Viggo Mortensen's Wikipedia page. It said originally something like "...complete fluency". I think the word "fluency" implies the adjective "complete" (or whatever was there: I can't retrieve it while I'm writing this talk item, I fear): you can not have "incomplete fluency".

I didn't want to be nasty or imply that Mortensen is somehow less of a linguist than he may be. So, I think my comment was helpful because it makes the sentence easier to read.

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

Regarding my edit to the Neapolitan ice cream article

Hi there. You just reverted my edit to the Neapolitan ice cream article, which was itself a reversion of this edit from September. However, as I alluded to in my edit summary, the English WP article itself states that the recipe originated in Prussia and the current English name originated in the US, and the fact that there's no Italian language WP article for it should be a giveaway.

Either way, I'm not going to revert your reversion (it will be ten years this year since I was an active editor here, and I left partly because edit wars were common at the time) - I just wanted to tell you my reasoning behind my revert of the original change from September (which had no edit summary, and contradicted our article even as it was written at the time), so that if you want to change it back you can do. Thanks for your time. 143.159.219.123 (talk) 08:26, 14 February 2020 (UTC)

@143.159.219.123: I changed it back but that's not a super verifiable source on the Prussian origin. Qzd (talk) 08:35, 14 February 2020 (UTC)

Hey, you just reverted my edit and left the message "what's up with redwarn". I'm afraid I'm not quite sure why you reverted my edit and what you mean by that. Blablubbs (talk) 19:50, 28 June 2020 (UTC)

Addendum: Just looked at the page history again; I get your comment now. I think what may have happened there is that we both triggered a reversion at the exact same time and some sort of conflict occured (?). Hasn't happened to me before Blablubbs (talk) 19:52, 28 June 2020 (UTC)
@Blablubbs: I noticed it just earlier today on another revert. RedWarn titles the edit as reverting the vandals edit but it actually ends up reverting another editor's revert that was a split second faster (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Lover_Fest&type=revision&diff=964991394&oldid=964991389&diffmode=source). I'm not familiar with RedWarn but Huggle warns you if there is a conflict like that. Qzd (talk) 19:58, 28 June 2020 (UTC)
@Qzd: RedWarn usually gives warnings too - my guess is that the issue only occurs when the reverts happen very close to each other. Pinging Ed6767: Is this a known bug? Should I open an issue on Gitlab? Blablubbs (talk) 20:13, 28 June 2020 (UTC)
Actually I should say that Huggle will warn you if there were later edits to the one you tagged, but if they are from a different user the rollback will fail regardless. I wonder if this bug is due to RedWarn's ability to work without the rollback API? Qzd (talk) 20:32, 28 June 2020 (UTC)
@Qzd: I think that's a fair assumption. What boggles me is that Redwarn usually functions exactly like you describe Huggle, i.e. it aborts in case of different users submitting edits in the meantime. Sadly, I have zero experience with both the Wiki API and Javascript, so I can't really tell you more - but you might be interested in looking over RedWarn's rollback implementation here. Anyway: Thanks for the heads-up, I'll submit a bug report on Gitlab as soon as time allows. Blablubbs (talk) 13:31, 29 June 2020 (UTC)
Blablubbs, sorry, I didn't get your ping - and yes, it's a bug that I didn't really know about - Ik that when edits are very close together there could be an issue on the pseudo-rollback side, but usually, they always edit-conflict out, so it's confusing how this even happens and I'll need to do lots of digging into it and maybe implement a few extra checks. You reverted changes to ASC X12. I work for the organization and it has changed the name. It no longer uses "ASC" because it now has two major components: one is ANSI accredited, the other is not. I don't know how to change the overall title of the page. I want to drop ASC from it. SteveBurke (talk) 21:38, 13 April 2022 (UTC)

@SteveBurke: You can move the page by creating a new page, copying the old article and redirecting old to new. See WP:MOVE. There is already an article at X12 so you'd need to add a parenthetical or something like that. Or keep the existing title. Adding a source for the name change would avoid some confusion.
