New Page Patrol newsletter June 2022
Hello Qwerfjkl,
- Backlog status
At the time of the last newsletter (No.27, May 2022), the backlog was approaching 16,000, having shot up rapidly from 6,000 over the prior two months. The attention the newsletter brought to the backlog sparked a flurry of activity. There was new discussion on process improvements, efforts to invite new editors to participate in NPP increased and more editors requested the NPP user right so they could help, and most importantly, the number of reviews picked up and the backlog decreased, dipping below 14,000[a] at the end of May.
Since then, the news has not been so good. The backlog is basically flat, hovering around 14,200. I wish I could report the number of reviews done and the number of new articles added to the queue. But the available statistics we have are woefully inadequate. The only real number we have is the net queue size.[b]
In the last 30 days, the top 100 reviewers have all made more than 16 patrols (up from 8 last month), and about 70 have averaged one review a day (up from 50 last month).
While there are more people doing more reviews, many of the ~730 with the NPP right are doing little. Most of the reviews are being done by the top 50 or 100 reviewers. They need your help. We appreciate every review done, but please aim to do one a day (on average, or 30 a month).
- Backlog drive
A backlog reduction drive, coordinated by buidhe and Zippybonzo, will be held from July 1 to July 31. Sign up here. Barnstars will be awarded.
- TIP – New school articles
Many new articles on schools are being created by new users in developing and/or non-English-speaking countries. The authors are probably not even aware of Wikipedia's projects and policy pages. WP:WPSCH/AG has some excellent advice and resources specifically written for these users. Reviewers could consider providing such first-time article creators with a link to it while also mentioning that not all schools pass the GNG and that elementary schools are almost certainly not notable.
- Misc
There is a new template available, {{NPP backlog}}
, to show the current backlog. You can place it on your user or talk page as a reminder:
Very high unreviewed pages backlog: 14138 articles, as of 16:00, 15 December 2024 (UTC), according to DatBot
There has been significant discussion at WP:VPP recently on NPP-related matters (Draftification, Deletion, Notability, Verifiability, Burden). Proposals that would somewhat ease the burden on NPP aren't gaining much traction, although there are suggestions that the role of NPP be fundamentally changed to focus only on major CSD-type issues.
- Reminders
- Consider staying informed on project issues by putting the project discussion page on your watchlist.
- If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, suggest they help the effort by placing
{{subst:NPR invite}}
on their talk page. - If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.
- To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.

Question from Shopbirdyco (18:43, 26 June 2022)
How do I create a wikipedia page? --Shopbirdyco (talk) 18:43, 26 June 2022 (UTC)
- @Shopbirdyco, Welcome! Creating a new article from scratch is extremely challenging, and new editors are strongly recommended to spend a few months learning how Wikipedia works, by making improvements to some of our existing six million articles before trying it. When you do decide to have a go at a new article, you are highly encouraged to read WP:Your first article. If you haven't already also check out WP:TUTORIAL; it's a lot of fun! Happy editing! ― Qwerfjkltalk 20:25, 26 June 2022 (UTC)

Hello, Qwerfjkl,
This category was tagged for speedy deletion after you closed the CFD but it is not empty and can't be deleted until the pages have been removed. I think there are tools to do this so it doesn't have to be done manually. I believe admins list these pages on a project page so a bot can take care of it. Liz Read! Talk! 02:46, 5 July 2022 (UTC)

Growth team newsletter #21
Welcome to the twenty-first newsletter from the Growth team!
New project: Positive reinforcement
- The Growth team started a new project: Positive reinforcement. We want newcomers to understand there is an interest in regularly editing Wikipedia, and we want to improve new editor retention.
- We asked users from Arabic, Bangla, Czech and French Wikipedia about their feedback. Some people participated at mediawiki.org as well.
- We summarized the initial feedback gathered from these community discussions, along with how we plan to iterate based on that feedback.
- The first Positive Reinforcement idea is a redesign of the impact module: incorporating stats, graphs, and other contribution information. This idea received the widest support, and we plan to start our work based on the design illustrated on the side.
- Please let us know what you think of this project, in any language.
For mentors
- We have worked on two new features, to inform them about the mentorship:
Scaling
- "Add a link" available at more wikis ― Add a link feature has been deployed to more wikis: Catalan Wikipedia, Hebrew Wikipedia, Hindi Wikipedia, Korean Wikipedia, Norwegian Bokmål Wikipedia, Portuguese Wikipedia, Simple English Wikipedia, Swedish Wikipedia, Ukrainian Wikipedia, Abkhazian Wikipedia, Achinese Wikipedia, Adyghe Wikipedia, Afrikaans Wikipedia, Akan Wikipedia, Alemannisch Wikipedia, Amharic Wikipedia, Aragonese Wikipedia, Old English Wikipedia, Syriac Wikipedia, Egyptian Arabic Wikipedia, Asturian Wikipedia, Atikamekw Wikipedia, Avaric Wikipedia, Aymara Wikipedia, Azerbaijani Wikipedia, South Azerbaijani Wikipedia. This is part of the progressive deployment of this tool to more Wikipedias. The communities can configure locally how this feature works.
- "Add an image" available at more wikis ― Add an image feature will be deployed to more wikis: Greek Wikipedia, Indonesian Wikipedia, Polish Wikipedia, Chinese Wikipedia. These communities will be able to configure locally how this feature works. [8]
Suggested edits
- Selecting topics ― We have created an "AND" filter to the list of topics at Special:Homepage. This way, newcomers can decide to select very specific topics ("Transportation" AND "Asia") or to have a broader selection ("Transportation" OR "Asia"). At the moment this feature is tested at pilot wikis.
- Changes for Add a link ― We have built several improvements that came from community discussion and from data analysis. They will be available soon at the wikis.
- Algorithm improvements ― The algorithm now avoids recommending links in sections that usually don't have links and for first names. Also, it now limits each article to only having three link suggestions by default (limited to the highest accuracy suggestions of all the available ones in the article).
- User experience improvements ― We added a confirmation dialog when a user exits out of suggestion mode prior to making changes. We also improved post-edit dialog experience and allow newcomers to browse through task suggestions from the post-edit dialog.
- Community configuration ― We allow communities to set a maximum number of links per article via Special:EditGrowthConfig.
- Future change for Add a link feature ― We will suggest underlinked articles in priority. [9]
- Patrolling suggested edits ― Some users at Arabic Wikipedia, Spanish Wikipedia, and Russian Wikipedia told us that "Add a link" and "Add an image" edits can be challenging to patrol. We are now brainstorming improvements to help address this challenge. We have already some ideas and we started some work to address this challenge. If you have any thoughts to add about the challenges of reviewing these tasks or how we should improve these tasks further, please let us know, in any language.
Community configuration
Communities can configure how the features work, using Special:EditGrowthConfig.
- Communities can set the maximum number of "add an image" suggested tasks a newcomer can complete daily. [10]
- Future change: allow communities to customize the "add a link" quality gate threshold easily, using Special:EditGrowthConfig. [11]

Hello, Qwerfjkl,
You know I am an admirer of your work but it looks like your bot emptied this category out of process rather than through an CFD decision. Could you please not do this? Every week I warn new editors about emptying out categories on their own rather than nominating them for deletion at WP:CFD so I was surprised to see you had a bot that did this.
You link to a talk page discussion (which was helpful, thank you) where I saw the suggestion of a bot taking on this task but nothing decisive like an RFC that would authorize a bot to make widespread changes. I can see using your bot after a CFD discussion was closed, and I don't love bureaucracy for its own sake, but for something like film categories, there are other editors, like those at Wikipedia:WikiProject Film who should be included in this discussion. It's one thing to have your bot do a run and remove a category from related articles but if the content creators keep adding articles to these categories, and recreating them, it kind of defeats the purpose of eliminating the category the first time. Also, since categories deleted for being empty, CSD C1, can be recreated by anyone at any time, their deletion is not permanent like it would be if this decision came from a CFD discussion.
I know it's a lot of work to bundle a lot of categories together for a CFD nomination on a particular subject, but I think if the goal is to eliminate or reduce these "X films" categories, this is the way to do it. Thanks again for all you do on Wikipedia. Liz Read! Talk! 21:52, 2 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Liz, I haven't emptied any categories intentionally. The bot takes pages that are.I'm the categories listed at User:Qwerfjkl/sandbox/24 recursively and then removes any country categories, per the discussion and the WP:BOTREQ. The bot mentions the category in the edit summary, so categories can be restored if necessary. Sorry for any trouble this has caused you! ― Qwerfjkltalk 22:41, 2 July 2022 (UTC)
- Just to point out, the request was not to have the bot indiscriminately remove all "Country films" categories from every film that it touched; it was to have the bot only remove "Country films" categories from articles that were already in that same country's "country-genre films" subcategories. For example, if a film was in Category:Hungarian films, Category:Hungarian drama films and Category:Austro-Hungarian films but not in an Category:Austro-Hungarian drama films category, then the bot was supposed to remove Category:Hungarian films because the film was already in a subcategory for "Hungarian + genre", but the bot was supposed to leave Category:Austro-Hungarian films alone due to the lack of an "Austro-Hungarian + genre" subcategory ensuring that the film was still staying inside the overall Austro-Hungarian tree.
- The request was not to just remove all country films categories across the board; it was to remove country films categories only where that represented duplicate categorization because the film was also in one or more of that same country's genre subcategories, while leaving country films categories alone if the film was not also in one or more of that same country's genre subcategories. The request was to remove categories that represented duplicate categorization, while not removing categories that did not represent duplicate categorization so that those could be looked at manually.
- So something has gone very wrong if any categories have been left empty by this, because the request was explicitly designed to prevent that from happening. Bearcat (talk) 15:32, 3 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Bearcat, I seem to have made an incorrect assumption: that pages would only be in one country film category. This problem is probably restricted to categories like Austro-Hungary where it could be in Austria or Hungary as well, so hopefully won't affect to many pages. The edits where the bot removed pages from this category can be found here. ― Qwerfjkltalk 16:01, 3 July 2022 (UTC)
- It's not restricted to things like that, because international co-productions are a very, very common thing in film. I've located another example, Odessa in Flames, where the film was in Category:Italian films and Category:Romanian films, and had been subcategorized within the Italian tree but not within the Romanian tree — but the bot removed both the Italian and Romanian categories even though that pulled the film completely out of the Romanian film tree. - (talk page stalker) Lists of films where Qwerfjkl (bot) removed multiple categories: 2 categories (3116), 3 categories (638) 4 categories (169) 5 categories (52) 6 categories (10) 7 categories (8). Dogville uniquely had 9 categories removed (off-topic: was that film really produced by 9 different countries), and I couldn't find any where 8 or 10+ were removed. * Pppery * it has begun... 20:12, 3 July 2022 (UTC)
- It would probably be easier to complete the run and then try to fix the incorrect removals. ― Qwerfjkltalk 06:06, 4 July 2022 (UTC)

- @Bearcat, I've written a script and started a run on the erroneous pages (see contributions. Please ping me if there are any problems. ― Qwerfjkltalk 15:57, 9 July 2022 (UTC)
