The article was previously marked as a copyright violation for copying text form another website; the response seemed to indicate that someone had written another version somewhere else, but I couldn't find it. Mindspillage (spill yours?) 17:04, 15 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Pydos, would you mind specifying which mentoring page you are referring to? Thanks! Flcelloguy (A note?) 21:32, 15 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I've gone ahead and moved the "ground rules" up per your suggestion. While I'm not in any way connected to this group/committee, remember that there's a policy of being bold. After all, it's a Wiki - you can edit the page for a reason! :-) Thanks again, though. Flcelloguy (A note?) 20:11, 16 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Portal drive, and ancient philosophers

[edit]

Yes, the template browsebarbetter is intended to replace the categorybrowsebar on all portals. Your help would be appreciated.

In answer to your question about classical civilization philosophers, they are listed chronologically in the Timeline of Western philosophers. But be sure to include Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, and Xenophon, for sure. I hope this helps. Go for it! 12:18, 15 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Nice job on Socrates

[edit]

I read your piece on Socrates. I corrected some grammar in there for you. Nice portal. Go for it! 11:28, 16 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Why the "template touch": to remove dependencies

[edit]

I was trying to cleanup an old and outmoded redirect in the mainspace. The redirct is not linkified here to avoid yet another depedency:

I have fixed it in Template:Wikipedians In The United Kingdom (Do a diff via history to see what I mean). You have to actually touch the User: pages to get them not to show up on this report:

The problem is that that, while on the screen, the template change takes effect immediately, it does not automatically do so within the dependency info. If the dependency info is not zero, it becomes hard to argue that the thing should be deleted.

I just did the rest (abou a half dozen). Now, I can finally go about {{rfd}}'ing the mainspace page "Wikipedians in the United Kingdom". Why bother? Becuase it is in the mainspace. If it had been in the Wikipedia: namespace, I would not have cared.

Portal drive complete

[edit]

I got that new browsebar up on all the portals. While I was updating those, it dawned on me to do the same thing for the upper levels of all the classification schemes included in the browsebar (overviews, categories, lists of lists, etc.). So if you have time, and you have a good macro program, I could sure use your help. Go for it! 15:17, 16 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Macros

[edit]

There's a Wikipedia article on it: Macro#Keyboard macros.

Macros are a way to automate keystroke patterns, assigning them to hotkeys, so you don't have retype the same thing over and over. So, when you are on a Wikipedia page, you press a hotkey (like Ctrl-Z), and it modifies the page automatically in whatever way you programmed the macro to do it. Generally the computer is much faster at inputing keystrokes than humans, so it speeds things up considerably.

To use macros on your browser, you need a 3rd-party macro program, like Macro Express.

I think it is available for free for 30 days, if you want to download it. Go for it! 15:57, 16 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Why?

[edit]

Why did you edit my talk page? Is this ill will because Go For It introduced the browsebarbetter template? I always welcome comments, but not people deleting other peoples!!!. Tis Christmas, the time for good will to all men and cryptographers Pydos 16:18, 17 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

{{Dablink}} is a template that gives consistent formatting to the disambiguation text at the top of an article. Besides indenting and italicizing the text, it also adds a CSS class around the text called "dablink" that allows disambiguation text on a page to be recognized. Other disambig templates besides Dablink also use the "dablink" CSS class for consistency, including {{Otheruses}} and {{Redirect}}. Dablink should be used when someone might end up at an article when they intend to find something else; the disambig links point them either to the right page or a disambiguation page. Hope that helps. Mike Dillon 19:44, 1 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sherlock Holmes

[edit]

Hello. The page was well over 43k (much too long) and read like two articles stuck together. I probably didn't do too great a job of the split since I was using a public computer and my time ran out half-way through. smurrayinchester(User), (Talk) 13:27, 6 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The main thing I'm not sure of is if I typed Sherlock Holmes into the search box, would I expect to see the character or the book series. Which do you reckon should be the main article? smurrayinchester(User), (Talk) 13:34, 6 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Trouble, is to do such a move, I'd need to be an admin (to delete the redirect Sherlock Holmes → Sherlock Holmes novel series and move Sherlock Holmes (character) back to Sherlock Holmes). I'll weld the pages back together for now, and try and get some discussion on the talk pages (which I probably should have done first...). smurrayinchester(User), (Talk) 13:46, 6 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Userbox

[edit]

Yes, go ahead and recreate the template: I was probably a little hasty in deleting that particular userbox. I should add the following at the bottom:

<noinclude>[[WP:CIVIL|Civil]] comment about matters related to Wikipedia is permitted under [[Wikipedia:User page]].</noinclude>

to avoid any problems with other admins. After all, this template is no more divisive than User:Physchim62/My userbox or User:Mindspillage/userpages (a member of WP:ARBCOM). Physchim62 (talk) 18:09, 12 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ok. And yes Dante Alighieri. I like his work as long as most classic literature. like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Ian Fleming, and Jules Verne. And it happens to be my screen name on Counter Strike. SaintDante 14:39, 27 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I still find it strange that Sherlock did not fight Jack the Ripper. I remember reading some were That he was in 5 of the stories and on 1 accassion it turned out Holmes was the Ripper and he was on a wild goose chase around london. oh welll. SaintDante 14:43, 28 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I found the book. The title is Encyclopedia of serial killers. And under Serial killers in fiction and film it states " Jack the ripper matched wits whith master detective Sherlock Holmes at least 8 times. ( In one bizarre outing, Holmes was the ripper, plagued by mulitiple personalities as he chased himself through fog shrouded london.) That is what the book says. But i have read all but the last book. "The Case Book Of herlock Holmes." I dont know why the book lies but i am prety sure now that the ripper doesnt apear in the books. Fan fiction maybe? Star Trek Portal

[edit]

Sorry I didn't reply to your message earlier, or at least didn't act on it. Well after trying to read the artical about Hippolytus I thought about topic news. Surely we should update this more regulary then we are as well? I was a reporter of star trek news once to a forum now gone. Tenchi Muyo 19:31, 21 March 2006 (UTC)Tenchi Muyo[reply]

Sorry, I didn't get what you're asking - I suppose you are making a request to retrieve contents of a deleted article? - Best regards, Mailer Diablo 15:03, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You have recently created the article Superdon. This was deleted in accordance with Wikipedia's deletion policies. Please do not recreate the article: if you disagree with the article's deletion, you may ask for a review at Wikipedia:Deletion review. Kuzaar 15:59, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oops! False alarm, I saw another user tag it for speedy as recreated and notified you, I didn't realize it was slated for recreation. Sorry about any confusion. :) Kuzaar 16:00, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I regret to say that as far as adding content to the Superdon page is concerned, I'm coming up a bit short on information. You see, having looked into the term, it seems to be a peculiarly British invention, and I've not heard it on this side of the Atlantic. So, not myself an authority on the British academic world, I'm afraid I haven't got anything to offer as far as it goes. Good luck, though, and thanks for your attention to the article. :) Kuzaar 19:54, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I see, I see it now. I just did a little snooping around the superdon page. I didn't realize that the word Don referred to a professor in English universities (according to Don. I'd never heard that, which explains my confusion at the word "Superdon", because when an American (well, me, at least) hears the word "Don", I immediately think of a Mafia kingpin, haha. By any means, I do think it's well-written and sufficiently well-sourced, etc. Kuzaar 20:02, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oh, no no no, you don't repost deleted contents that has gone under AfD. I 'userfied' (transferred to your user-subpage space) it with the intention for your personal uses, not to put it back. - Best regards, Mailer Diablo 00:03, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Tauroctony

[edit]

The tauroctony is an artistic representation unique to Mithraism. It is a ritual killing but not necessarily a sacrifice; its meaning to initiates is mostly unknown because of the dearth of written evidence relating to Mithraism. There is no evidence that Mithraists sacrificed bulls (except for a couple of inscriptions now considered to be 19th-century forgeries). The taurobolium, on the other hand, is definitely a sacrifice. It is associated closely with Meter and Attis, but not with Mithras. Both involve the killing of a bull in a ritual context, but not all bull sacrifices are taurobolia.

My main sorces of information for the tauroctony and taurobolium are Manfred Klauss' and David Ulansey's books on Mithraism, and Robert Duthoy's fairly exhaustive survey of evidence on the taurobolium. (I recently revised the article on the taurobolium, when I added it as a source.) The two are confused quite often, so rather than revert it again, I'll hold off until I can dig up some more exact information. It's nice to know someone is paying attention! Superdon

[edit]

I see the discussion above now. I do think some people are tight-arsed about 'sourcing' etc. Every piece of baseless rumour and tittle-tattle can be linked to some definite 'source', while finding a link for things everyone knows is a wearisome. I keep trying to improve my Greek and Latin btu spread myself too thinly with other things, I fear. I will drop in on the portal. Thanks Pliny 17:44, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If I were you, I'd definitely change the "Dr. Who?" to the Torchwood logo. The only thing I would personally change about the text would be to change "it belongs to us" to "its ours", like Yvonne said in "Army of Ghosts" but that's just my opinion. GusF 16:01, 6 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You asked: "What are you contesting vis a vis Pantycelyn's amputated arm? He was the one with the rolex in the first of the series, whose arm was cut off in an attempt to save the village from being bombed by mistake."

Sorry for any confusion. You are absolutely correct of course. No, the point I was making was that he did not return WITH an amputated arm - he left it in Patagonia, so "returned with an arm amputated".

Excellent article by the way.

  • To do Law. My son has just started law.
  • Expertise in freemasonry. Stephen KNIGHT is the author of a leading book on the subject.

WP:Hornbook -- a new WP:Law task force for the J.D. curriculum

[edit]

Hi Pydos,

I'm asking Wikipedians who are interested in United States legal articles to take a look at WP:Hornbook, the new "JD curriculum task force".

Our mission is to assimilate into Wikipedia all the insights of an American law school education, by reducing hornbooks to footnotes.

  • Over the course of a semester, each subpage will shift its focus to track the unfolding curriculum(s) for classes using that casebook around the country.
  • It will also feature an extensive, hyperlinked "index" or "outline" to that casebook, pointing to pages, headers, or {{anchors}} in Wikipedia (example).
  • Individual law schools can freely adapt our casebook outlines to the idiosyncratic curriculum devised by each individual professor.
  • I'm encouraging law students around the country to create local chapters of the club I'm starting at my own law school, "Student WP:Hornbook Editors". Using WP:Hornbook as our headquarters, we're hoping to create a study group so inclusive that nobody will dare not join.

What you can do now:

1. Add WP:Hornbook to your watchlist, {{User Hornbook}} to your userpage, and ~~~~ to Wikipedia:Hornbook/participants.
2. If you're a law student,
(You don't have to start the club, or even be involved in it; just help direct me to someone who might.)
3. Introduce yourself to me. Law editors on Wikipedia are a scarce commodity. Do knock on my talk page if there's an article you'd like help on.

Unreferenced BLPs

[edit]

Hello Pydos! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 1 of the articles that you created is tagged as an Unreferenced Biography of a Living Person. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring this article up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 11 article backlog. Once the article is adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. A tag has been placed on Aurora (Filipino band) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a band or musician, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for musical topics. You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag - if no such tag exists then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hangon tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. --moreno oso (talk) 14:19, 26 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Aurora (Filipino band) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a clear copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words.

If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
