Spanish language

I see that you've just added the following list of tenses to the Spanish language page:

  • presente (present)
  • pretérito imperfecto (past progressive)
  • pretérito indefinido(simple past, sometimes present perfect)
  • pretérito perfecto (present perfect)
  • pretérito anterior (past perfect)
  • pretérito pluscuamperfecto (past perfect)
  • futuro (future)

Could you flesh that out by providing examples of what tenses we're talking about? Something like:

  • presente (present): "hablo"
  • etc

This system of names for the tenses is unfamiliar to me, and examples would be a great help.

Con un saludo, Hajor 03:49, 19 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Feel free to take Borges's segundo apellido back out. I noticed that it was there on the Spanish-language page, and (as a non-native) was inclined to assume that whoever wrote that would be more correct than me on this. Then again, they also had his baptismal names, which I was confident in omitting. Yes, you are probably right, take it out. -- Jmabel 22:45, 14 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Like your work

Hi Pablo,

I just want to say that I appreciate the work you've recently been doing in the area of linguistics, countering the systemic bias of Wikipedia. That's it :). Kind regards, mark 02:00, 31 Dec 2004 (UTC)

List of Atheists

Pablo, I've been wanting to somehow take charge of the List of Atheists page for a little while now. I think it's such a terrible page which could be improved into something useful. Are you willing to help me out with this one? There hasn't been much discussion on the Talk page lately, but I'd like to get something going. --Comics 19:08, 14 Jan 2005 (UTC)

I was thinking of cleaning the whole thing up myself but didn't want to go in so abruptly. Wait for me until Monday, so I can get a decent Internet connection and spare time, and I'll see if I can get at least a coherent intro.

--Pablo D. Flores 22:12, 14 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Sounds good to me. I had similar thoughts. I figured I could just jump into it myself and change up some things, but I was looking for a few people who would want to help democratize it a bit.  :) I figure that each entry will have to be looked at individually to see if it's worthy of keeping or not. --Comics 23:06, 14 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Alternate universes and literature

Rioplatense Spanish

I've written a Rioplatense Spanish article inspired in you :). Feel free to add/modify whatever you think it's apropriate, but the article needs phonology badly (i'm not a linguist). I also noticed that I missed the le/lo explanation, I leave it to you ;P --SpiceMan 16:19, 27 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Now that's an article somebody should have written before! Thanks a lot. I'm checking it now. Besides the phonology part, I have some qualms about including all those "influences", which may be appropriate for the whole of Argentine Spanish. I'll do some research on that. For now I'll see what I can add to the article. Note however: mate and che definitely belong in Rioplatense, but cóndor does not -- obviously not many condors over here; I've seen them only in zoos. And gurí I wouldn't include in Rioplatense; it's completely absent from the speech of people in the three main cities. You hear gurí 200 km north (or more) from Rosario, with a different accent and all (already turning into the kind of Spanish spoken near Paraguay and southern Brazil). --Pablo D. Flores 11:50, 28 Jan 2005 (UTC)

tagging articles

Please put templates like {{expansion}} that only are useful to editors, on talk pages (the only exception I can think of would be the different stub templates). This is to Avoid self references as much as possible and make our content more useful to third party users. Thank you. :) --mav 08:50, 10 Feb 2005 (UTC)

The Avoid self references page states:
"... an article which is still in its initial development or under dispute often will include tags such as {{stub}}, {{npov}}, and {{expansion}} to help editors further develop the article, and the text in these templates include self-references. Try, however, to limit such self-references, even in templates."
So a limited use of expansion tags is allowed in practice. You're not the first to point this out to me; I've taken a previous post and moved it below this one. It seems that Wikipedia:Template messages disagrees with the above, since it clearly states that expansion tags et al belong in the article namespace.
The asiduous editor, who looks in the special pages for articles to work on, may have no problem with expansion tags placed in the Talk pages; but the occasional editor who surfs by will miss them. An expansion request is psychologically powerful -- it motivates readers to become editors. Is there a place where one can discuss this?

--Pablo D. Flores 11:41, 10 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Expansion template

Everything in the article namespace has to be for readers not editors. A call to expand a page is clearly information for editors and belongs on the talk page. See Wikipedia:Template messages. - SimonP 17:18, Dec 31, 2004 (UTC)

If you look a bit further down into Wikipedia:Template messages, you'll see that expansion requests belong in the article namespace (see the section "Article-Related Namespace", first column, "General" -- after disambiguation. --Pablo D. Flores 22:33, 1 Jan 2005 (UTC)
But if you click on that page you will see that the location suggested is the talk page. - SimonP 22:48, Jan 1, 2005 (UTC)
The table says clearly that expansion requests belong in the article namespace (it's placed along disambiguation, which you'll agree, I'm sure, definitely belongs in the article and not the talk page). An expansion request is for editors, OK, but such a request should also be visible to the reader since it's a warning "that content is sub-standard" as it says in Wikipedia:Template messages. A reader is always a potential editor, and a request for expansion is not a simple administrative editing task. --Pablo D. Flores 23:00, 1 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Metro Buenos Aires

Hello Pablo-flores,
I search for the Wikimedia Commons and the Buenos Aires-metro-articles (en and es) photos from the Metro Buenos Aires (subte). Are you have a digital camera and can take the photos? Or you known a human, who can takes the photos? Greetings from Germany --Jcornelius14:06, 22 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I don't have a digital camera, but more importantly, I don't live in Buenos Aires. Regrettably I also don't have a friend there. But I think you can get some images through the image search engine in Google (for example, try this). --Pablo D. Flores 14:34, 22 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Moving articles

Hi - I think you may have been renaming some articles by deleting the text and reinserting it in a new page. Please note that this is not the recommended way to rename a page: you should use the "Move" tab, which will ensure that the history and discussion moves with the text.

By the way, glad to see you are tidying up some of the phonology pages. rossb 15:21, 29 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Thanks. The movings have been mostly redirections, in order to keep a consistent titling of the phonology pages. It makes no sense to have Spanish phonology, Russian phonetics, and Danish pronunciation when they all refer to the same topic. In some cases the redirect already exists -- but goes the opposite way. :) --Pablo D. Flores 18:00, 29 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Hubbert Peak

could you explain your revertion of Hubbert Peak on the talk page? I didn't do the "vandalism", but I'd like to understand the anonymous editor's point. --goethean 18:20, 29 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I would too. Introducing a so-called "creaming curve" and "wildcats" without explanation or links seems very strange and suspicious to me. Unless the editor comes back and tells me what the heck that paragraph meant, I'll continue to feel that the revert was justified. --Pablo D. Flores 18:24, 29 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Dummy pronouns

Thank you for your thoughtful reply to my suggestion about dummy/expletive/pleonastic pronouns -- very much the kind of reply I was hoping for. I intend to reply, with some agreement and some disagreement; but this is going to take a bit longer than I'd expected, because so-called real life is unfortunately interrupting my work on WP. Please be patient. In the meantime, please don't bother to reply here (or on my own talk page); instead, we'll continue where we started, after a short break. -- Hoary 03:46, 2005 Apr 30 (UTC)

Christianese

Howdy,

For what it's worth, I think your recent efforts on this page should not have had the "minor" tag on them (black "m" in the edit history). They were pretty extensive. You probably just accidentally had the "This is a minor edit" box checked from another edit, but you should watch out for that. Some editors will get really upset if serious edits are labeled "minor". (Not me, by the way.)

You made a valiant effort to "un-Christianese" the definitions altered by the anonymous editor, but I think they could still use a little work. Not right now for me, though, it's too late at night. My general feeling on this page is we should assume near-total ignorance of Christianity by the reader and keep the definitions as plain and simple as possible. Nice working with you, Soundguy99 07:42, 6 May 2005 (UTC)

Thank you. I probably started out thinking of something minor, and then went on and on and saved the whole thing like that. I really thought those "expanded" definitions were a bit too verbose. Maybe each entry which introduces a concept should have a link to an appropriate page on Christian doctrine already covered in the usual fashion. --Pablo D. Flores 10:27, 6 May 2005 (UTC)

Hola, Pablo Flores. I decided to put the "LL" section with all the unders with the "L" because I had been informed that the RAE had rid the usage of double letters since 1994. If not, I'll gladly change it back...but I think it is alright.

Adios,

Dbraceyrules 05:13, 18 May 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up on the Spanish section of my user page; I'll be more careful in the meanwhile, but I wasn't really paying attention to what I was doing when I wrote it. I eventually delete it...I was already going to. Thanks

chakras

Hi, Pablo,

It's really hard to keep your temper in some of these discussions. I learned something during a national debate on the Clinton impeachment (in the forum on that subject on NPR) -- that I'm really trying to communicate with the people who are on the sidelines, not to the person that just called me a whole series of bad names and is clearly out to find something to use to put me down. I fortunately learned never to respond in kind, just bring the discussion back to the facts. There are a few people on Wikipedia that I really admire and know to be reliable help in dealing with bullies. I'll have a look at the chakra article. Maybe I can get Mav or somebody like that to drop in and dispense some tranquilizer. P0M 17:39, 20 May 2005 (UTC)

Thanks

Thank you, I hoped I had done a good job of improving that article, it's nice that someone appreciates. I've not been using wikipedia for that long so I've not had much feedback yet. --Ebz 00:52, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Protest-stub

Hi - there isn't one currently (a special stub type, that is). The procedure for making a new one is to go to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Stub sorting/Criteria and propose a new stub type at the end of the current month's list of proposals (be warned, it's a fairly big page). There's generally about a week allowed for suggestions, counter-proposals, and the like, and if there aren't any objections by the end of the week then you can either make the template yourself (following the "how to" procedures on Wikipedia:Stub) or just wait for one of the regular stub-sorters to do i for you. By the way, since one of the usual criteria is having a lot of stubs it might be worth either looking for more stubs that can use the template or expanding the scope of the stub (say to include things like strikes and lockouts). Sounds like a rasonable proposal though. Grutness...wha? 02:27, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Re: Category tags

Hi Pablo,

I think the pipe character does work in categories (at least they work in Internet Explorer and Netscape; I don't think it depends on browser). My aim was to avoid that every list appears at the letter L in the list of lists, because that was what happened when we didn't use the pipe character.

I like your website btw. :)

regards,

Alensha 12:55, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hi, I still do not understand your request for Alensha. If you look at this page Category:Lists, you can see that the article List of English irregular verbs appears under letter L, although E could be much more reasonable. Apparently, most other articles are placed under the initial letter of the first relevant word of the title (i.e., the one following the words "List of"), e.g. List of oil fields is placed here under letter O, not the letter L, etc. etc. etc. Would you please tell me why you oppose piping? Adam78 18:09, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I've already cleared the matter with Alensha (my mistake). --Pablo D. Flores 20:22, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Rosario

Pablo, I have a very interesting article about the Deuda externa (this could be an article by itself). It's about the history of the Argentine debt since 1890 Cuando 114 años tampoco es nada (Pagina12). -Mariano 12:31, 2005 Jun 17 (UTC)

Regarding your {{Economy of Argentina}} template; It seams informative (I'm always FOR them), but even though its named Economy of Argentina, its heavily centred in the Economy crisis of 2001. Perhaps it could be good to swap the title Economy of Argentina with Argentine Economy Crisis? That would make it more coherent. Good wiking, Mariano 15:07, 1 August 2005 (UTC).

Clitic doubling - Bulgarian

There is clitic doubling but it is mostly emphatic. You could say: Аз го дадох подаръка на майка ми - I gave it the present to my mother. Or: Аз й го дадох подаръка на майка ми - I gave her it the present to my mother. In the first case, one accentuates the present, in the second one - the mother.

If one speaks formally, the sentence will, however, have to be: I gave the present to my mother. It is rather colloquial and that's why it is not treated extensively in grammars. VMORO 23:11, Jun 21, 2005 (UTC)

Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius

In your recent correction of me at Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius you are entirely correct. -- Jmabel | Talk 03:32, Jun 25, 2005 (UTC)

your vampire / world of darkness box

you added a sort of info box to the vampire the requiem page and also the vampire dark ages page (why not to the vampire the masquarade page?). on itself not really bad, but especially the terms below the 3 types of vampire settings (missing the victorian setting btw) aren't accurate in all types of white wolf vampire rpgs. terms like book of nod and carmilla don't show up anymore in the latest setting i think. so all in all i propose to remove it from the vampire the requiem page. Boneyard 6 July 2005 08:04 (UTC)

I was myself thinking about it, since Requiem seems to be a different beast altogether. I'm not familiar with the Victorian setting either. The box is intended as a quick cross-reference with common terms (regardless of whether they appear linked in the main text as well). It's not my box really, so feel free to add or remove it (or to change its contents) whenever you want to. I'll try to add it to the Masquerade article if I can find a suitable place (where it doesn't clutter the screen). --Pablo D. Flores 6 July 2005 10:35 (UTC)
PS also, while the differences are not that extreme, there are some between the other two games. The Camarilla doesn't appear in Dark Ages, and the Cainite Heresy doesn't appear in Masquerade, yet both are in the box. The problem with Requiem is that the folks at White Wolf have modified and revised the setting to the point of incompatibility... --Pablo D. Flores 6 July 2005 10:35 (UTC)

I added a few other valid points to the sub-topics line of this definition, state what you feel was not objective about it. (?)

Gabrielsimon

Regarding revert warring on Vampire, I don't know what to do with this guy. I'm already fighting with him elsewhere, I don't want to do it in this article too. I don't know what to do with him, but I'm giving up reverting him here, because I'm personally irritated with him and I don't want that to interfere. Friday 22:26, 19 July 2005 (UTC)

I would simply suggest that you read the other RfCs, the RfC procedure carefully, and then word it from there. For my own part, I'll keep an eye on Gabriel but as an admin, I don't want to get involved in a direct conflict unless I have to. --khaosworks 01:15, July 20, 2005 (UTC)

Just to add - you're probably aware of this already but just in case - an RfC is not to request sanctions on anybody. It's just to get the rest of the community to weigh in on the person, give their opinions and hopefully all these will give that person a clue as to whether their behaviour is acceptable or not. If nobody else thinks that the person's behaviour is objectionable, that's fine. If other people do, and that person persists, then the next step will unfortunately be Arbitration. --khaosworks 02:42, July 20, 2005 (UTC)

I'm sad to say that Gabrielsimon is edit skirmishing again, this time on September 11 attacks. He's run afoul of some editors there, from the looks of his talk page. Not sure that he's technically violated 3RR yet, but he looks to me to be attempting to go unilaterally against consensus by brute force. I thought you'd want to know, in case it impacts your decision on whether or not to RFC. Friday 21:45, 20 July 2005 (UTC)

I signed it, as I'm sure you've noticed. There are other things that could go in there are well, but I'm still a relative newb and haven't participated much in RFCs. So far now I'm not adding anything but my signature. If I need to do more at some point, that's fine, but I want to be careful. I've gotten in unproductive bickering matches with this user before and I don't want to do it again. Friday 14:14, 21 July 2005 (UTC)

Tobias Conradi (Talk) 01:44, 27 July 2005 (UTC)

I'd rather write "Last year I was in the province of [[Córdoba (province of Argentina)|]], [[Argentina]]". --Pablo D. Flores 10:21, 27 July 2005 (UTC)

Provinces (2)

Good proposal. I'm almost, almost ready to support, but since the proposal addresses "provinces and cities as above," I'd first like you to see my comments about giving the cities undisambiguated article locations, recently added beneath the table. If you restrict the proposal to provinces, leave the cities for later, I'm signing up in a heartbeat. (Fwiw, I'd prefer Córdoba (Argentine province) over Córdoba (province, Argentina), but that's an utterly, utterly minor detail in comparison with the soundness of the proposal as a whole.)
