@Mac Dreamstate:The image page says that it has free, self-copyright and can be moved to commons. If that were done, it could easily be linked from the English Wikipedia. Otherwise, it would have to be uploaded to the English Wikipedia just like any other image, and marked with the appropriate licensing. Images don't have to be uploaded with the same name, so an existing file in the English Wikipedia should not matter, as your note implied. —Ost (talk) 17:17, 2 November 2015 (UTC)

What's New in WikiProject Louisville? (Nov 2015)

Thank you for your continued membership in WikiProject Louisville! Our project is still alive and mildly kicking after over 9 years in operation. If by chance you're not up-to-date with what's going on in the project, here's some of the more recent goings-on:

We have over 6,100 articles included in the project and almost 17,000 pages (including talk pages) overall.
Our list of project tasks have been moved to a project subpage. This was done because the project's main page was getting rather long and perhaps difficult to digest. "One-stop shopping" for our project's tasks!
Our Membership department has been revamped. A lot of membership-related things have been clarified.
Did you know:
- You can patrol recent changes to any page included in our project? Great for stopping vandalism and more!
- You can see which of our project's pages are the most popular?
- You can easily focus on and fix specific kinds of problems (such as cite date errors) within our project?

Capitals

I noticed in a recent edit of yours[1] that your Auto-ed changes capitals at the beginning of template names to small letters. Please don't do that. After all, the names of templates are written with capitals. Even if you don't want to change them into capitals, at least don't remove them. Debresser (talk) 19:38, 13 January 2016 (UTC)

@Debresser:I've never particularly liked that feature of the tool (even though I generally use lowercase formatting when manually adding citation templates), but I don't see the problem as this has zero-impact to readers. As a technical limitation of the platform, all pages start with a capital letter. That doesn't stop valid links like iPhone, which really resides at IPhone. I've asked the developer as to why this feature exists and if it could be toggled, but I don't consider these edits to be disruptive. See WP:CITE#Examples; the templates are listed in lowercase. —Ost (talk) 22:18, 13 January 2016 (UTC)

Articles about Wikimedia projects

Hello OST. I appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia. I feel that I need to remind you that sometimes, rigid adherence to rules goes against all common sense and that we actually have a rule that says if another rule interferes with making a good encyclopedia, then ignore it.

At WP:PRIMARY, the first sentence of the second paragraph states (in relevant part): "Appropriate sourcing can be a complicated issue, and these are general rules. Deciding whether primary, secondary or tertiary sources are appropriate in any given instance is a matter of good editorial judgment and common sense...." (link in original).

This past October, you tagged the article Simple English Wikipedia with {{Better source}} tags, stating that the reason was due to [[WP:PRIMARY]]. Given that the article draws directly from our own database and uses Wikipedia database functions, this application of the tag was absurd. As currently written, the article grabs data from Wikipedia's own servers to provide exact and up-to-the-minute statistics about this Wikimedia project; any secondary source that reports different numbers is likely to be either out-of-date, or a pure fabrication.

In the future, I hope that when you apply tags to articles, that you consider whether the tag makes sense in the particular situation, and whether it is possible for anyone else to act on the tag to improve the article. @Etamni: I appreciate your time and input, and will try to be more cautious. I was using AWB and the way that sentence is written, it doesn't sound like they're current numbers; I probably missed that it was using functions. That being said, articles relying on primary sources have a higher at risk of problems such as WP:UNDUE and WP:OR. For instance, despite the quote being mostly accurate (it's actually missing a comma), it is editorial opinion to ascribe it as "the stated aim" of Simple Wikipedia; I read the aim as to provide "an easy-to-read online encyclopedia for people who are learning English", as the link's lede says. The quoted portion seems like it's talking about a secondary audience, as it follows the phrase "is also for". —Ost (talk) 16:11, 26 January 2016 (UTC)

Anyway, this particular article is a tricky one because it is an article about a Wikimedia project, and is sourcing some statistics from Wikipedia's own database, and other information from a page in "Wikipedia" space -- not technically a policy or guideline, but it might as well be one. I think we can look at the article on this site titled Wikipedia for guidance. That article, which is an encyclopedia article about Wikipedia (and primarily the English Wikipedia), uses both external sources and internal sources for some of it's information. Additionally, it also uses database functions (and doesn't even provide a citation for them). I agree that there are valid reason for generally preferring secondary sources in articles, including the reasons you mentioned above. Regarding this particular article, I think the quoted material is fine and there is absolutely no problems with the use of the database functions to retrieve the statistics about the project. (BTW, if you are interested, you can confirm those statistics at simple:special:statistics. Also, please note that I've adjusted the article to include the missing comma -- you are right that since it's a quote, it should be perfectly correct. I haven't checked to see if the source was changed after the article was written here, or if someone just didn't notice that they missed a comma when they wrote the article, but it's fixed either way.
