GOCE drive newsletter

Invitation from the Guild of Copy Editors

The Guild of Copy Editors invites you to participate in their September 2011 Backlog elimination drive, a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy editing backlog. The drive will begin on September 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and will end on September 30 at 23:59 (UTC). We will be tracking the number of 2010 articles in the backlog, as we want to copy edit as many of those as possible. Please consider copy editing an article that was tagged in 2010. Barnstars will be given to anyone who edits more than 4,000 words, with special awards for the top 5 in the categories "Number of articles", "Number of words", and "Number of articles of over 5,000 words". See you at the drive! – Your drive coordinators: Diannaa, Chaosdruid, The Utahraptor, Slon02, and SMasters.

Re: Thanks

Hey there, it might be worthwhile to include both the chairman and the leader. The chairman is the person who presides over council meetings, the leader is the one who, as designated by the members of the controlling party (or the members of the largest party or coalition parties in the event of a No Overall Control council), decides administrative priorities and policies, direct local authority officers in carrying out those desitions and appoints cabinet members (if applicable). The Chairman is largely a ceremonial role. Many authorities have different was of deciding who this is each year. Some alternate based on party affiliation, some make a point of appointing members of opposition parties and some decide it based on seniority - most just decide by a "free" vote by all members of the council. Hope this helps. Aprhys (talk) 20:25, 9 September 2011 (UTC)

DRN discussion

Hi Northumbrian. I've just read your DRN request regarding the United Kingdom page. I just thought I'd let you know that I've taken a look at the discussion and feel that DRN is not the best place to take the issue. I recommend that, unless the user in question starts to discuss the issue, you take it to WP:ANI where an admin can deal with the user. ItsZippy (talkcontributions) 17:42, 25 October 2011 (UTC)

Thank you IZ, I appreciate the perspective on content vs. conduct. If he does change the article again without discussion, I'll take it to ANI as you suggest. Cheers, NORTHUMBRIAN SPRǢC 18:05, 25 October 2011 (UTC)

Do-Support Origin

Hi Northumbrian,

I've downloaded the two documents you'd posted and have scanned them a little but haven't had the time to really delve into them yet. One thing I've seen in both of them though is that perhaps the approach the author has taken may be a little reversed. He's done some very good research but it's all be carried out with the assumption that the use of do 'emerged' at some point as an innovation. I think there is very solid support for the idea that in fact, it's always been there.

The whole idea of do-support is in itself flawed (although that's been another argument regarding this article) in that it seeks to explain why do IS used in certain usages such as negatives, questions, etc. People have spent decades trying to come up with a fool-proof explanation of why do 'appears'. The real issue though is not why do IS in these certain forms but why it is NOT in the others.

The answer ends up being far more simple and logical than the whole debate of do-support, 'dummy verbs' and such. Also, once you understand what do as an auxiliary does, then you can easily see why other similar languages don't have it (they don't need it). Hit me up if you'd like to discuss this more (email is on my page). Either way though, before going too deep into an origin section, it might be worthwhile to explore this alternative. About the thing.

Um, thanks for notifying me about the edits but I didn't make those edits about the racial stuff at all. I mainly look and edit at dancing games. Plus, from time to time my user always changes. (Like I always have a different number thingy)

BTW: I just notice it was made in 2010. I have a feeling someone else had this user thingy before me and I then I got it.

BTW Again: When I meant "number switch" this is what I mean I was once 71.147.33.28 and now i'm 71.147.37.54. It seems to happen (at least to me) from time to time.
