WikiCup 2023 May newsletter

The second round of the 2023 WikiCup has now finished. Contestants needed to have scored 60 points to advance into round 3. Our top five scorers in round 2 all included a featured article among their submissions and each scored over 500 points. They were:

Other notable performances were put in by Sammi Brie, Thebiguglyalien, MyCatIsAChonk, Chicago PCN02WPS, and London AirshipJungleman29.

So far contestants have achieved thirteen featured articles between them, one being a joint effort, and forty-nine good articles. The judges are pleased with the thorough reviews that are being performed, and have hardly had to reject any. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Sturmvogel 66 and Cwmhiraeth. DYK for Cusrow Baug

On 19 May 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Cusrow Baug, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Cusrow Baug in Mumbai had only a few tenants in 1950s even at a low rent of 40 rupees per month? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Cusrow Baug. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Cusrow Baug), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Thank you so much on your edits regarding the article Gujarat Sultanate.

Thank you Nizil Shah for providing valid sources and evidence regarding the claims of the origins of the Sultans. However, I would like to say there are other users who have been editing and removing those sources and adding irrelevant sources. I have corrected the mistakes. - Thanks, GujaratiHistoryinDNA

Galleries

Just realised when looking at closed FPs that I said I'd explain new-style galleries, and never did.

First of all, I've been on here a while, so, by "new-style" read "5-10 years old".

So - and you can see the code by editing this - If you just make a gallery on a page, it looks like this:

You can play with heights and widths, but if there's a variety of content shapes, they're kind of terrible. Also, if you're on mobile, then this explanation is going to make no sense as mobile galleries use completely different code.

One thing you can do to improve things is to use one of the "new" features, mode=packed

I find you also usually want to add a heights= parameter. 250px is usually decent:

And the code for that is <gallery mode=packed heights=250px>

Help:Galleries has a bunch of other options, but note that only "packed" really has any consensus for use in articles. Nolines might be helpful if you have very similar sizes of images and want to force a grid or something, but I haven't seen it used much. I think that, when they were upgrading galleries, they tried a bunch of options and only packed really took off.

Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 8.4% of all FPs. 04:15, 24 May 2023 (UTC)

Thank you for explaining this. It is really helpful. Nizil (talk) 09:05, 24 May 2023 (UTC)

Women in Red 8th Anniversary

Women in Red 8th Anniversary
In July 2015 around 15.5% of the English Wikipedia's biographies were about women. As of July 2023, 19.61% of the English Wikipedia's biographies are about women. That's a lot of biographies created in the effort to close the gender gap. Happy 8th Anniversary! Join us for some virtual cake and add comments or memories and please keep on editing to close the gap!

Need expert's help !

Hi Nizilbhai,

I've created & finished my first ever draft. Yay! Here it is Draft:Parimal Garden, Ahmedabad. I submitted for review & added tags for "India" (WikiProject India) & "Geography" (WikiProject Geography).

Is that it? Or am I missing something? What else can I do for quick assessment? Am I supposed to wait now? For how long?

Cheers. Rahilarious (talk) 21:59, 29 July 2023 (UTC)

Rahilarious First, thank you for creating this draft. I will copyedit it for style etc. Please note that the information in the article should be supported by references. Most of text in the article are not cited with references. Please do add reference/source from where the information is found. Do follow reliable source guidelines. Once you have done this, submit it for review by clicking the blue button in grey box above the article (you have created the draft but not submitted it for review yet). Then message me here, I will review the article. And thanks for fantastic images of the garden. Feel free to ask me if any help needed or any questions. I will be happy to help! Regards,- Nizil (talk) 06:35, 30 July 2023 (UTC)
"you have created the draft but not submitted it for review yet"
I actually did submit it for review. I even added tags of WikiProject India & WikiProject Geography. I noticed bunch of categories like "Draft with pending assessment" were added to article. But after that I don't know what happened, it turned into draft again ! Rahilarious (talk) 23:07, 1 August 2023 (UTC)
I have rewrote, expanded and added more refs and details. Now it is ready for submission. - Nizil (talk) 08:25, 31 July 2023 (UTC)
Exceptional. By just looking at history comparisons, I'm learning quite a lot. Thank you so much for thoroughly researching & fine-tuning article. I've submitted for review. If this goes well, I'll add more such local attractions in Wikipedia. Rahilarious (talk) 23:17, 1 August 2023 (UTC)
Done. I have created the article now. Thank you for initial works without which I would not have done it. I have started working on Law Garden too. If you like, you can create one on Victoria Garden too. Ask me whenever you need any help. Keep contributing! - Nizil (talk) 05:00, 2 August 2023 (UTC)
As it is a new article, I have submitted it to WP:DYK at Template:Did you know nominations/Parimal Garden where it will be scrutinized. If passed, it will appear on main page of Wikipedia under DYK section. All other such nominations are at T:TDYK. I have also submitted it to Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Requests where others will correct grammar and other basic errors in the article. Please watchlist DYK nomination so you can see what happens there. I am a co-author for DYK and will work to get it passed. Reagrds,- Nizil (talk) 05:48, 2 August 2023 (UTC)
More work ongoing in the article. Checkout Talkpage and DYK nomination. Regards,- Nizil (talk) 08:13, 8 August 2023 (UTC)

Hello, @Nizil Shah, could you assist me in expanding the Draft:Administration in Gujarat? DilipSpatel (talk) 13:23, 7 October 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for your interest in Wikipedia. It looks like a lot of text is copied from other articles. There is no use of duplication here. It is unclear what information this article needs to present. There is List of urban local bodies in Gujarat for urban bodies which also you have copied. Divisions and district sections are also copied from elsewhere. What exact new/original information you have added? Please remove all things you have copied from elsewhere (I have removed lede and history section). Then I would be able understand what you are actually trying to add. Regards,-Nizil (talk) Nizil (talk) 06:58, 8 October 2023 (UTC)

The 2024 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with 135 participants. This is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2017.

Our current leader is newcomer Generalissima (submissions), who has one FA on John Littlejohn (preacher) and 10 GAs and 12 DYKs mostly on New Zealand coinage and Inuit figures. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

As a reminder, competitors may submit work for the first round until 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February, and the second round starts 1 March. Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round; currently, competitors need at least 15 points to progress. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges (Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs), Epicgenius (talk · contribs), and Frostly (talk · contribs)) are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.
