Royal National College for the Blind

Hi. I've been asked to submit the article Royal National College for the Blind for FAC by PaulLargo, who is currently away for personal reasons and therefore unable to do it himself. I notice the last review was concluded with a request to submit the article again, but to notify those who had contributed to the discussion to determine whether they had any major objections to it being put forward again. Since the last FAC I've done some minor work on expanding it and, along with another user, have added more images. I feel it's probably ready for submission again, but wanted to run it past those who reviewed it last time before completing the nomination. Hi again. I've sorted most of the things you've mentioned at the FAC and am about to start expanding the lead. Just one or two things I'm not certain about though so was wondering if you could help.

• School age students - I'm not sure of the best way to approach this since the school leaving age in Britain has changed several times over the years. In the Victorian era people left school at 12, and it was later raised to 14 (which I think it still was at the end of the war). This seems an ambiguous statement to me and without access to the reference I can't check it. Would it be better to take it out?

It seems an important point, since it was a major change in focus for the school. It says here that the leaving age in 1944 was 15 and secondary education began at 11. The reference is here. Perhaps say that before WWII, the school admitted 11 to 15 year olds, but aftercame to and agreement with Worcester...."

• "Outstending" appears to originate from this press release posted by the college. Again I'm not sure of the best way to approach this.

The Judd School

Just regards your oppose on The Judd School FAC, is this actionable? If I went through and removed all claims not directly related to the school, or found other sources, would this satisfy your concerns?

Incidentally I got back from the library a few hours ago and the book was printed by Staples Printers, Rochester. It was published by Impress Print Consultancy Ltd, 6 Newton Avenue, Tonbridge, Kent, TN10 4RR, which Google Street View suggests is a residential building. I do not believe that the book was published by the school, but indeed the forward suggests profits would be donated to the school.

I further do not believe that there are any alternative sources; I have spent days trawling through all the local and country libraries, newspaper archives and the internet. I understand concerns about reliable sources, but surely this is just an employee writing a book about his previous employer. Furthermore, he does not cover in any detail the most recent period the school; "The involvement of the author in the events of this chapter makes comments invidious, so there will be more in the way of figures and analyses".

Anyway thanks for reviewing, and I hope this issue can be adequately resolved because I spent a regrettably long time, and a lot of hard work on this article. Cheers, Tom (talk) 14:12, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

Although the article still relies on Taylor, I am confident that this cannot be helped any further. I spent about 3 hours in libraries looking for alternative sources, and although I found some, there are to my knowledge no more. I hope that you will consider your oppose on this article, and hopefully strike or support as appropriate. Thanks for the heads up. I am honestly shocked to see this article at FAC. It has no business being there, of course. I can't argue with your sourcing comments. Some of these were raised (and at one point corrected) in one of the many GA and peer reviews. But a lot of them clearly don't check out. I see your point on the POV statements, but I think most of those are pretty mild and easily corrected. But in my experience with this very inexperienced editor, he may not know what to do about a GAR. I tend to agree it should lose the GA if the sourcing issues are not cleaned up once and for all, but I will the let the GAR unfold as it will before I jump in, if at all. Yikes. Not sure what happened to that diff. I only made three small changes: (1) I changed the reference to competitions to say that students are encouraged to participate and deleted the "prestigious" part. (2) I replaced "recent" with "since 2008" and (3) I added an inline comment that the section refers only to students and faculty, not alumni. I am not sure what sources you are looking for, but the sources for the section you commented on actually are online, including the student handbooks.

I'm sorry you got the double-whammy! It was just a quirky thing that happened, probably my fault. I've been very busy, FAC is backlogged, so Karanacs started reviewing some to get things moving. She knows to leave baseball, medicine, Spanish-language, and a few other topics to me, but she had no way of knowing that I know performing arts schools. Benet sourcing

Fortunately I have the entire day off tomorrow, so I'll have time to resolve some issues that came up in Benet's FAC. Are there any referencing problems that you see in the article, especially the History section? I still have a few books that I can skim through for information. Let me know!

On a related note, I've been quietly asking around about the real identity of Benny the mascot, but it seems that he hid his identity very carefully. Did you ever get a chance to view his work on Wikinews, though? My guess is that he's from Naperville. Edge3 (talk) 23:54, 21 October 2010 (UTC)

The big problem was an over-reliance on web sources, particularly those of the school/abbey/university. There are still a lot of university web sources. It would be better if some of them could be replaced. I have not had much time to work on it, other then tweak the captions a bit, but I am following. The book sources really strengthen the article. If there are more, that would be great. When you feel like you have taken it as far as you can/feel like, I will do a thorough copyedit and see how things look.

Some of the sources are duplicated and should be consolidated. If you are not sure how to do that, let me know and I can help.

For some reason I always thought Benny was a girl. No reason why. If he ever reappears, I hope he is not offended.

I can certainly help out with replacing the web sources with book sources, but the ones I have right now came from the abbey and college. The duplicated source you saw was published by the university, and the other was published by the abbey. Sadly I've found no unbiased sources that cover the history of Benedictines in the US with as much detail as the Benedictines themselves did. (Which really shouldn't be too surprising, as the Benedictines have had a reputation for recording things very well.) Hopefully this won't be too much of a problem during FAC.

Yeah I really don't know what to do with the sources when I have different page numbers to cite; would you please help me out?

Hi Nasty Housecat! I don't know if you remember me but my name is Eric and I was responsible for the Saint Anselm College article to get promoted to a GA while you reviewed it. Someone is trying to change the infobox picture saying the picture of the building is not adequate and the official logo has to be there. Now, I know you let it pass GA with the image that was there and that I took. There is an on going discussion on the Saint Anselm College's talk page now about this. Can you weigh in?

No. We just did not get enough reviews. See User talk:Laser brain#Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Benet Academy/archive2. Apparently, when there is a backlog, they just close anything that has been up for two weeks with no supports. Frankly, that's a new one one me and I have had other FACs go a lot longer than that, but it is what it is. You have to wait two weeks before renominating. I suppose I should have posted notices on the relevant projects that the article was at FAC and pinged the previous reviewers. The girl that made the accusation resolved my lawsuit against her in December. Part of what she agreed to was a court order signed by the judge ordering the word rape removed from the record. Shimer College is a small, private, undergraduate liberal arts college in Chicago. Founded by Frances Wood Shimer in 1853 in Mt. Carroll, Illinois, it was a women's school for most of its first century. It joined with the University of Chicago (U. of C.) in 1896, and became one of the first junior colleges in the country in 1907. In 1950, it became a co-educational four-year college, took the name Shimer College, and adopted the Hutchins Plan of Great Books and Socratic seminars then in practice at the U. of C. The U. of C. relationship ended in 1958. Shimer enjoyed national recognition and strong growth in the 1960s but was forced by financial problems to abandon its campus in 1978. It then moved to Waukegan, IL, remaining there until 2006, when it moved to the National Register of Historic Places-listed campus of the Illinois Institute of Technology in the Bronzeville neighborhood in the Douglas community area of Chicago. Classes are exclusively small seminars in which students discuss original source material rather than textbooks. The Early Entrant Program, in place since 1950, allows students who have not yet completed high school to start college early. Shimer has the highest rate of doctoral productivity of any liberal arts college in the country. (more...)

Hi, I am Mihara57, from Taipei, Taiwan. I and JHH755 (Shenzhen, China) are translating and editing 诗默学院(Shimer College), it's a Chinese version. But we have a problem now, we can't understand "a battle over what some saw as a right-wing attempt to take over its board and administration"(Who's Buying Shimer? - Chicago Reader), what's the meaning of this? How exciting that the article will be translated into Chinese! I see how the sentence is confusing. I will try to clarify. It means that there was a struggle for power (a battle) within the school. Many people believed (saw) that the president and some of the trustees had formed a politically very conservative (right wing) faction and were attempting to take control of the school for their own purposes. Hi Nasty Housecat,

I got your name from the list of peer review volunteers. I am hoping you wouldn't mind having a look at the Sahaja Yoga article which I've been involved with for some time. I practice the technique and my interest in the article was sparked by a desire to rescue it from a sustained critical attack. However I have not removed any reliable sources, just tried to keep it neutral and encyclopedic. Recently I have obtained the following feedback via the form at the bottom of the article:

• Few reputable sources

• Moderate bias

• Contains key info but with gaps

• Difficult to understand

The reputable sources issue is not easy to correct since there literally has not been much written about this movement.

The bias score may be skewed since readers may include both devotees and critics, both of whom may find the article is biased away from both their respective views. I would appreciate someone who is neutral such as yourself to give me an indication of how you perceive the neutrality.

Please let me know about any gaps in the information provided from your independent viewpoint.

Mostly I would like some feedback and/or help with the way it is written to enhance the comprehension for the reader.

Thanks for the interest. In American usage, things are "on" a campus. For example, students live "on campus." The meaning in the article is that the campus belongs to IIT, but Shimer is also located there. Hope this helps. Nasty Housecat (talk) 22:14, 17 September 2011 (UTC)

The School for Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA) is a magnet arts school in Cincinnati, Ohio. SCPA was founded in 1973 as one of the first magnet schools in Cincinnati and became the first school in the country to combine a full range of arts studies with a complete college-preparatory academic program for elementary through high school students. The school rose to national prominence in the 1980s, but was nearly closed in the 1990s following a series of scandals, leadership struggles, and an arson fire which destroyed the auditorium. New user - review for article creation

Greetings, I am Orschstaffer, a new editor and article creator. I selected you for a new article creation reviewer from village pump and your volunteer statement, and your interest in alternative education. I have reviewed your contributions and work with Benet and the featured article at The Avery Coonley School. Should you care to look into my userpages I have explained many things about why I am here at Wikipedia, if you don't have the time to look, then I can reply to a simple request it you care to ask me. The User:Orschstaffer/OrschDraft is a request from the founder of Orsch to create an entry into Wikipedia, so in my excitement I created an account (Orschstaffer), now only to find I fall into coi. I have spent my time research/reviewing guidelines, policies, etc, and have written/rewritten the article to standards the best I can, there is still some copy/editing I plan on doing as well as more research for resources. I believe the article has shaped up for entry compared to other articles I've reviewed in the same categories. I have endeavored to maintain npov plus I have reviewed how to write a good article among others. I have not requested the article to be reviewed for creation yet (or at least till now, although I don't consider this the official request per wiki policies) and I ask for your review and edits primarily so I'm not the only editor of the article when it does get posted to live wikipedia (per suggestions I've read so far). I would like to have an article worthy of featured article status from the onset. Therefore I am not in a big hurry for publication. (Although Mrs. Jackie requested a deadline back in May). Forgive my verbosity with this request and accept my appreciation up front should you decide to contribute/collaborate on this article creation.
