Pageviews analysis freaking out ?
As of today I am getting a bar for about every 15 days instead of each individual day eg https://tools.wmflabs.org/pageviews/?project=en.wikipedia.org&platform=all-access&agent=user&range=latest-20&pages=Social_undermining --Penbat (talk) 09:30, 13 January 2017 (UTC)
- @Penbat: I've rolled back the most recent deploy. I was not able to reproduce the issue, though. Could you share which browser and operating system you are using? Also what language you have your browser set to? You can use this tiny script to get the language code. Thanks — MusikAnimal talk 18:31, 13 January 2017 (UTC)
- It was definately wrong earlier on and I tried several times. But just now it is fine again. I am using Firefox 50.1 and Windows 7. Looks like an odd temporary glitch. I will give you a shout if it happens again.--Penbat (talk) 19:07, 13 January 2017 (UTC)
- @Penbat: It's working again because I rolled back the breaking change. The broken version is on the staging app at [1]. Sorry to ask again, would you mind browsing to this script and tell me what you see? I think certain browser language settings may have something to do with how the dates are being parsed. Thanks — MusikAnimal talk 19:16, 13 January 2017 (UTC)
- Yep your broken version [2] is still wrong for me. Are you trying to implement a few enhancements ? this script gives me an error message in a little dialog box saying "The page at https://fiddle.jshell.net says en.GB OK" If I click OK I get an HTML, Javascript screen just saying "alert(navigator.language);"--Penbat (talk) 19:37, 13 January 2017 (UTC)
- @Penbat: Could you verify the staging app works as expected now? [3] There is a new feature... you can click and drag on the chart to zoom in on a specific date range. Try it out! — MusikAnimal talk 20:09, 13 January 2017 (UTC)
- Yes that seems fine now including your new feature. The only thing that catches my eye is the date labels look unwieldy eg "20/1/2017" they take up a lot of space. Generally only alternate dates are given except for current date. Previously you had every date and they were at a 45 degree angle and it worked better. --Penbat (talk) 20:44, 13 January 2017 (UTC)
- Wonderful! I've redeployed the new feature with the fix. Thanks for your help :) The rotation of the date labels still happens (e.g. try a wider date range), only the logic is slightly different. I will try to refine it but I think it's good enough to move forward with the new feature. Best — MusikAnimal talk 21:05, 13 January 2017 (UTC)
- I was comparing apples to apples (both with 20 days displayed). Are you sure that your latest software change has not affected this ? Give me a link to your previous version so I can double check. --Penbat (talk) 21:53, 13 January 2017 (UTC)
- Yeah I see what you mean with the 20-day view, but see for example 30-days [4]. Hopefully it's not too much of a concern right now... I was really excited to get the zoom functionality out — MusikAnimal talk 23:37, 13 January 2017 (UTC)

TBH it looks a serious mess. I have many links to Pageviews analysis from User:Penbat all giving a 20 day view. 20 day view is the default. It is the previous days usage that is of most interest to me and I check some every day. I would never use the zoom view and I suspect only a few percent of users ever would. It is more of a gimmick than useful functionality. It seems wrong to make it look messy for everyone just to add a feature that only a few users would ever use. One point tho is just what is the point of, say, "20/01/2017", why not "20/01/17" to save space ? --Penbat (talk) 09:44, 14 January 2017 (UTC)
- @Penbat: Perhaps what you're seeing is more cluttered than what I'm seeing. Would you mind sharing a screenshot (whatever service you want to use is fine, doesn't have to be Commons)? The date format you see is whatever is the default for your language, in your case en-GB — MusikAnimal talk 17:27, 14 January 2017 (UTC)
- Also, what about changing the default to be the last 30 days? — MusikAnimal talk 17:37, 14 January 2017 (UTC)
- You have still not given me a chance to double check with the old version. [5] just hangs for about 30 seconds and then says "Fatal error".--Penbat (talk) 18:16, 14 January 2017 (UTC)
- Well I'm mostly interested in what you're seeing in the new version so I can better understand the extent of your issue. For me in the 20-day view, only the last two labels are overlapped. This is not good but not severely bad, and I will fix it. It sounds like it's not only the last two labels that are overlapping for you? Unrelated, the link you provided was indeed broken, I have just deployed a fix — MusikAnimal talk 18:34, 14 January 2017 (UTC)
- Quite honestly I think your approach is a complete shambles. You seem intent in railroading through a gimmicky software change that probably about half a percent of pageviews analysis users both know about and will actually use. You are obviously trying to tie one hand behind my back by not letting me double check to do a comparison with the old version. As far as I can see you are willing to seriously downgrade the usablity experience of 99.5% of the pageviews analysis users for the 0.5% who might use this gimmicky feature. I have no idea why you are bothering with all this and also wasting my time. --Penbat (talk) 18:45, 14 January 2017 (UTC)
- Alrighty, I've again reverted back to the old version. Me asking you to share a screenshot was only so I could help you, not to waste your time! :) I also wasn't holding back you comparing with the old version, rather I was focusing on fixing the new version. But don't worry, I'll get the zoom functionality out with the same logic for the date labels, one way or another. Thanks for working with me on this — MusikAnimal talk 19:03, 14 January 2017 (UTC)
- If you'd like to continue playing around with the new version, or compare/contrast, it is running on the staging app [6]. Best — MusikAnimal talk 19:05, 14 January 2017 (UTC)
- I have just confirmed that the date labels look horrible in the new version, especially for 20 days but also for 30 days. The righthand-most bar is displayed narrower than the others for most date ranges. None of these issues occur in the old version - it was important for me to double check. This software change is definately not worth it. I am happy to upload screen captures if you explain how I can do this.--Penbat (talk) 20:29, 14 January 2017 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) @Penbat: Please consider your tone when requesting help or improvements to tools like this. If you informed me that something I'd spent a lot of time on "looks horrible", "is a complete shambles", or "looks a serious mess" while requesting changes I would be much less patient with you than MusikAnimal is being. See this page for instructions on how to screenshot, and you can upload it to any image hosting site or Commons to post here. Sam Walton (talk) 22:01, 14 January 2017 (UTC)
- Another obvious alternative is to send you screen captures by email if it is tricky to upload them to Wikipedia.--Penbat (talk) 10:19, 15 January 2017 (UTC)

- I've managed to get the zoom functionality to work without the use of a time scale on the x-axis, which is what was throwing off the rendering. Let me know if you have any issues, but indeed a more cooperative tone would be appreciated — MusikAnimal talk 21:03, 15 January 2017 (UTC)
- Gee thanks :-( It was you who did not cooperate. I had to ask twice for a copy of the old version so I could do proper analysis of the problem. (Twice is being generous, actually it was more like three times as the first time you gave me a link that did not work when I initially asked for one). You seemed to be intentionally thwarting my efforts. If I had not devoted my time to all this you probably would not have debugged the issues. You pushed it out live anyway. You should be thanking me not complaining. Anyway it looks fine now except for a small issue - all days on a Sunday are preceeded by a dot - what is the point of that ? If it is to mark out weekly intervals I thought the first day of the week was a Monday. --Penbat (talk) 21:44, 15 January 2017 (UTC)
- Incidentallty, as you know I have helpfully informed you previously of quite a few other bugs (some quite basic) in pageviews analysis. It always seems to be just me who picks up the bugs and new versions of pageviews analysis are tossed out live with glaring errors. Do you do proper testing and debugging ? You don't seem to. If you do proper testing and debugging you wont have to "suffer" my involvement and we will both be happy.--Penbat (talk) 22:16, 15 January 2017 (UTC)
- Penbat, yo. Please assume good faith and use a collegial tone. We're all volunteers; none of us want condescension or to be belittled. Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by The ed17 (talk • contribs)
- I'd like to just nip this in the bud and say I'm trying to help, and nothing less. I apologize as I didn't see the relevance of sharing the older version, and I was using the staging app for other purposes. I do sincerely appreciate your input, and if you'd like to be informed about major upcoming changes I'm happy to keep you in the loop so you can provide early feedback (there are some exciting things to look forward to!). To answer your questions, there is a test suite in place, but the issue with how the dates are rendered was within the underlying Chart.js library, and I can't effectively test that. The dots indeed represent the first day of the week. That requested feature was deployed a few months back, since there is a common week-long fluctuation in pageviews, and the dots merely help illustrate this trend. See also the FAQ. Sunday is defined as the first day of the week according to the moment.js library, apparently going by US standards. I looked into and it turns out I can force the ISO 8601 standard, so expect that to be implemented soon. Finally, full disclosure: I am employed by the WMF but this project began as a volunteer effort and remains to be an almost entirely volunteer-driven effort. I still reply with the staff account at meta:Talk:Pageviews Analysis as support issues fall within that realm, and I'm not going to oddly use the staff account on my volunteer talk page =P Thanks for your understanding and assistance — MusikAnimal talk 02:03, 16 January 2017 (UTC)

Recent changes
- You can now upload WebP files to Commons. [7]
Problems
- video2commons was down for two weeks. This was because of a problem with Commons video transcoders. It is now back up. [8]
Changes this week
- There is a new magic word called
{{PAGELANGUAGE}}
. It returns the language of the page you are at. This can be used on wikis with more than one language to make it easier for translators. [9] - When an admin blocks a user or deletes or protects a page they give a reason why. They can now get suggestions when they write. The suggestions will be based on the messages in the dropdown menu. [10]
- You will be able to use
<chem>
to write chemical formulas. Before you could use<ce>
.<ce>
should be replaced by<chem>
. [11] - You now can add exceptions for categories which shouldn't be shown on Special:UncategorizedCategories. The list is at MediaWiki:Uncategorized-categories-exceptionlist. [12]
- The "Columns" and "Rows" settings will be removed from the Editing tab in Preferences. If you wish to keep what the "Rows" setting did you can add this code to your personal CSS:
#wpTextbox1 { height: 50em; }
You can change the number50
to make it look like you want to. [13] - Sometimes edits in MediaWiki by mistake are shown coming from private IP addresses such as 127.0.0.1. Edits and other contributions logged to these IP addresses will be blocked and shown the reason from MediaWiki:Softblockrangesreason. This should not affect most users. Bots and other tools running on Wikimedia Labs, including Tool Labs will receive a "blocked" error if they try to edit without being logged in. [14]
- When you edit with the visual editor categories will be on the top of the page options menu. [15]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 17 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 18 January. It will be on all wikis from 19 January (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on January 17 at 20:00 (UTC). See how to join.

Hey MusikAnimal. My tech question for the day
Hey MusikAnimal, you're the techiest admin I know so I was hoping you could help me figure this out - any clue why my talk page archive only shows 1 archive when I have 5? For some reason it hasn't been updating (although the archiving bot is working), and I wasn't sure if it was a setting or what could cause that. Thanks in advance! Garchy (talk) 21:51, 24 January 2017 (UTC)
- @Garchy: I think I've fixed it. I saw that you only had a Archive 1 and an Archive 5 (via Special:PrefixIndex/User_talk:Garchy/). The template wants there to be a 2, 3, and 4 before it can show 5, so I just moved the 5 to 2 and updated the bot config. Best — MusikAnimal talk 21:55, 24 January 2017 (UTC)
- Ah, thank you! I would have never figured that out :) Garchy (talk) 21:59, 24 January 2017 (UTC)
Question about SvG & draft space moves
Hi, I just reverted MusikBot's move of Yona Knight-Wisdom to Draft:Yona Knight-Wisdom, as part of the SvG cleanup. The reason was that almost all of the article was written by myself, as I expanded it for a DYK, during which I verified the existing content from SvG's stub creation. Just wanted to check, this isn't going to cause any problems with the bot, is it? I don't want the bot to think it hasn't moved that page. Joseph2302 (talk) 22:35, 24 January 2017 (UTC)
- @Joseph2302: No this is fine. Thanks for moving it back, and also for expanding it! :) — MusikAnimal talk 22:38, 24 January 2017 (UTC)
Why have you deleted Pedrolia Martin Sikayun just after the recently completed AFD called for the article to be kept? Nfitz (talk) 19:33, 24 January 2017 (UTC)
- @Nfitz: See the summary; it hasn't been deleted, it was moved to the draftspace per User:Aymatth2/SvG clean-up/Guidelines. I'm not sure if by going through AfD we should consider it reviewed... I would ask at User talk:Aymatth2/SvG clean-up/Guidelines. The same goes for the other articles listed at that AfD, which also appear to have been created by SvG. Alternatively if you can say with confidence the articles don't suffer from the issues outlined at User:Aymatth2/SvG clean-up/Guidelines#Types of problem, then I think it's fine to move them back to the mainspace yourself — MusikAnimal talk 20:00, 24 January 2017 (UTC)
- You moved them, you put them back. You can't just blatantly ignore a just completed AFD, which not one person supported. No one identified any accuracy issues in the AFD. Nfitz (talk) 20:03, 24 January 2017 (UTC)
- MusikBot moved them as part of a massive cleanup effort of SvG's articles. The bot was not programmed to check for AfDs, which it probably should have been, but it's almost finished going through all of them anyway. To be clear I'm not 100% up to speed with what all the folks at User:Aymatth2/SvG clean-up/Guidelines are doing, the outcome of the AN/I discussion, etc., I just fulfilled the bot request. Hope this helps — MusikAnimal talk 20:06, 24 January 2017 (UTC)
- I just checked Draft:Pedrolia Martin Sikayun, and all looks well except I don't see anything about her playing for MISC-MIFA in the source. Notability doesn't appear to be the main concern with SvG's articles, by the way, which is why this one was brought to AfD — MusikAnimal talk 20:16, 24 January 2017 (UTC)
- No, but it's easily verifiable, such as in [17]. Nfitz (talk) 20:31, 24 January 2017 (UTC)
- I tried to start reverting those that were in Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Pedrolia Martin Sikayun, but undo doesn't work, and I can't see how to use Move, without creating a redirect. How do you move without doing a redirect? Nfitz (talk) 23:42, 24 January 2017 (UTC)
- @Nfitz: You need to be a page mover, but that's OK, redirects to the mainspace are fine. It's only mainspace to draft that is an issue — MusikAnimal talk 00:01, 25 January 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks ... page mover - seems unnecessarily bureaucratic ... Nfitz (talk) 03:39, 25 January 2017 (UTC)

How to protect it?
Hi, that page Panthera leo fossilis had been vandalised before. How do I protect it? Leo1pard (talk) 12:45, 25 January 2017 (UTC)
- @Leo1pard: The protection template by itself does not protect the page, you need an admin to do it for you. Here I don't think protection is needed. Kevmin surely had good reason as to why the removed the content earlier this month. The best course of action is to talk to them directly about this — MusikAnimal talk 16:36, 25 January 2017 (UTC)
Village Pump & tech questions
Sorry to bother you again - but I figured I would ask you if I placed this in the right location - and also I wasn't sure if in your time on Wiki you have ever seen this proposed before. Also, since it just came to me right now - do you know why it is not possible to watch someone's user page without it automatically watching their talk page as well? I tried to watch Jimbo Wales user page (not talk page) but could not do so without it watching both (and you can't unwatch the talk page without it unwatching the user page). Usually not an issue - but with someone like Jimbo who has so many edits I didn't really want to watch the talk page as well :) Thanks for any advice! Garchy (talk) 14:40, 25 January 2017 (UTC)
- The idea lab is presenting ideas, so perfect place for your proposal. However it has been discussed, and it actually came in 122nd place in the 2016 Community Wishlist Survey. The relevant Phabricator (the place where we track technical requests and issues) is at phab:T63022. And yes indeed, anytime you watch a page, the corresponding talk page is also watched. I'm not aware of any workarounds for this, but most of the time this behaviour is favourable — MusikAnimal talk 16:43, 25 January 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks for the info! Good to know that idea has been proposed before. Garchy (talk) 16:47, 25 January 2017 (UTC)

Pageviews for redirects (specifically, after a page move)
Hey MusikAnimal. I wanted to use the pageviews tool to see the history of the 2017 Women's March article, but it was moved from its old title 2017 Women's March on Washington. The pageviews tool currently only seems to let you see views for pages that exist (including not being redirects), so as far as I can tell, the pageviews from the old page name are now lost. Is there any way I could see that old page name data, and more broadly, is there a reason not to show pageviews for articles that are now redirects (but may not have been in the past) or pages that don't exist? Sam Walton (talk) 13:09, 26 January 2017 (UTC)
- @Samwalton9: I have no problem getting pageviews for redirects; review Breakaway (video game) and Breakaway (2010 video game). --Izno (talk) 13:15, 26 January 2017 (UTC)

Stop your bot
You need to stop your bot. It s moving toms of cyclist articles to draft space. They are fine and are important pages. You are hurting Wikipedia by doing this.--Seacactus 13 (talk) 00:31, 27 January 2017 (UTC)
- @Seacactus 13: This was a result of an AN/I discussion regarding SvG's articles. Everything you need to know is at User:Aymatth2/SvG clean-up/Guidelines. The bot task is complete, by the way, so it is no longer moving any pages — MusikAnimal talk 00:45, 27 January 2017 (UTC)
PERM helper scrip
I know it's not your responsibility, but as I don;t know how to do it, It would be great if you could get around to extending the helper script for New Page Reviewer to include adding the editors user page to the list at Wikipedia:New pages patrol/Reviewers/Newsletter list. Other admins don't use the script at all and I find it tedious not only doing these things manually for myself, but for everyone else too ! Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 01:36, 23 January 2017 (UTC)

Stale drafts report
Hi MusikAnimal, I notice the MusikBot stale drafts report didn't run last week as normal. At this time when drafts and their deletion are under active discussion it may be good for this report to be kept up to date, if reasonably possible. Could you investigate please? While you're there could you consider splitting it into several pages, so as to load more readily: Noyster (talk), 16:02, 26 January 2017 (UTC)
- @Noyster: Looks like there were some connectivity issues on the last run, so I've ran it again manually. I could split up the results onto multiple pages, but the issue is then you'd lose the ability to sort by revisions, last edit, etc. Another option is to change how far back it looks. Roughly half are over 8 months old, maybe we could have it show those instead of 6+ month old drafts? Then it would load much faster — MusikAnimal talk 18:43, 26 January 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks for quick action here. How about splitting at the 8 or 9 month mark? With just 2 pages it wouldn't be too much to sort each one on the desired field; and there would be less loading time for those who wanted to access the oldest or the newest entries: Noyster (talk), 13:11, 27 January 2017 (UTC)
Sockmaster on a tear
Hi, MusikAnimal. Long-term sockmaster Kingshowman is currently on a tear, using anonymous accounts to vandalize unprotected Donald Trump articles. A couple of the socks were regular IPs and have been rangeblocked for 2 weeks. But several are IPv6s; would a rangeblock be possible for them also? I have blocked the following accounts which have been active in the past few hours: User:2600:1017:b401:833e:6d85:6065:6269:b1d1, User:2600:1017:B401:833E:A412:FCD2:24A6:F5AB, and User:2600:1017:B426:AE2C:24D1:FDAB:18D0:1B37 You can see their activity at Social policy of Donald Trump, Foreign policy of Donald Trump, and multiple other articles. I realize that IPv6's can be tricky and sometimes impossible to rangeblock, but thanks for looking into this. --MelanieN (talk) 18:55, 27 January 2017 (UTC)
- @MelanieN: Both ranges belong to wireless carriers, but when I ran a check on the /64 ranges I didn't see any unrelated edits, so I've blocked both ranges. Only went with 31 hours though, if it continues, and there's still no collateral, we might extend it. I think page protection is probably best overall, as pages related to Donald Trump are likely to attract vandalism beyond this LTA — MusikAnimal talk 19:09, 27 January 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks, that should help. Maybe we do need to pre-emptively protect everything related to him. I'll give that some thought. --MelanieN (talk) 19:17, 27 January 2017 (UTC)
- I probably wouldn't do it preemptively, I just meant you shouldn't feel too bad about protecting these pages because the LTA has got to them. Others will too most likely, and we might be doing more damage with range blocking these mobile carriers. If an unrelated good-faith editor in that IP range can't edit a page about Donald Trump, not perfect, but at least they'll be able to edit other pages. Ya know? :) — MusikAnimal talk 20:05, 27 January 2017 (UTC)

SQL Query on Quarry
Hey MA!
I was trying to figure out how many pages in the category "Living People" did not have the {{BLP}} tag, so I could add that to them. The thing is, I don't want to manually search through 1,107,594 articles to find which ones have it or don't have it. I'm working on an SQL query to find those pages on Quarry, but I seem to be messing something up. Here is the code I'm using:
SELECT
page_title
FROM page
JOIN templatelinks
ON tl_from = page_id
JOIN categorylinks
ON cl_from = page_id
WHERE cl_to = "Living_people"
AND tl_namespace = 10
AND page_namespace = 0
NOT "{{BLP}}"
LIMIT 500;
It gives me an error on line 11. I don't get what the problem is. You seem to know a lot about SQL queries, so maybe you could point me in the right direction? Thanks! Yoshi24517Chat Online 20:08, 30 January 2017 (UTC)
- @Yoshi24517: Yes this is a tricky one! I'm flattered you think I'm good at SQL, but realistically I'm "okay" at best :) I think what you want is more along the lines of:
SELECT page_title FROM page
JOIN categorylinks ON cl_from = page_id
WHERE page_namespace = 1
AND cl_to = "Biography_articles_of_living_people"
AND "BLP" NOT IN (
SELECT tl_title FROM templatelinks
WHERE tl_from = page_id
AND tl_namespace = 10
)
LIMIT 500;
- This would only find talk pages that don't have {{BLP}}, ignoring BLPs that don't have talk pages. I think with another JOIN on page you could account for BLPs without talk pages, but that may be best done with a separate query. Even this one is very likely to timeout. I bet you could utilize some indexes to make it faster, or just ask someone more skilled at SQL :) See also Wikipedia:Request a query. Hope this helps! — MusikAnimal talk 20:41, 30 January 2017 (UTC)
- That query is taking a while. Would there be any other way to find out what pages in the "Living people" category don't have the BLP template? I decided that's the next thing I would work on. Yoshi24517Chat Online 23:00, 30 January 2017 (UTC)

4th GA Cup - Round 3
Hello, GA Cup competitors! Sunday saw the end of Round 2. Shearonink took out Round 2 with an amazing score of 499. In second place, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga earned an astounding 236 points, and in third place, Cartoon network freak received 136 points. Originally, we had plans for one wild card for 9th place, however it appears that both Chris troutman and J Milburn were tied for 9th place. Therefore, we have decided to have both advance to Round 3. In Round 2, 91 reviews were completed! At the beginning of this GA Cup, the longest wait was over 7 months; at the end of Round 2, the longest wait had decreased to a little over 6 months. It's clear that we continue to make a difference at GAN and throughout Wikipedia, something we should all be proud of. Thanks to all our competitors for helping to make the GA Cup a continued success, and for your part in helping other editors improve articles. We hope to see all remaining users fighting it out in Round 3 so we can keep decreasing the backlog. To qualify for the third round, contestants had to earn the two highest scores in each of the four pools in Round 2; plus, one wildcard. For Round 3, users were placed in 3 random pools of 3. To qualify for the Final of the 3rd Annual GA Cup, the top user in each pool will progress, and there will also be one wildcard. This means that the participant who comes in 4th place (all pools combined) will also move on. Round 3 has already started and will end on February 26 at 23:59:59 UTC. Information about Round 3 and the pools can be found here. Also, we'd like to announce the departure of judge Zwerg Nase. We thank him for all his hardwork and hope to see him back in the future. Good luck and have fun! Cheers from Figureskatingfan, 3family6, Jaguar, and MrWooHoo. To subscribe or unsubscribe to future GA Cup newsletter, please add or remove your name to our mailing list. If you are a participant still competing, you will be on the mailing list no matter what as this is the easiest way to communicate between all participants.

Stats needed
I'm trying to stave off ACTRIAL being unilaterally rolled out by the community. While I think it would be an extremely good idea, it would lose any credibility I have built up with the WMF. What we need is a table of New Page Revievers showing: 1)user name, 2)date of 'promotion' 3) number of Curations, 4) date of last curation, 5) date of last edit.
Is this something you could quarry for me fairly quickly? I'm sorry I have to ask, but as you know, I dont have a clue about regex, SQL, or data mining - and I'm genuinely to old to learn. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 01:05, 1 February 2017 (UTC)
- If you're too tied up with other stuff to do this, no worries, but do let me know and I'll rt to find someone else to do it. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 22:55, 2 February 2017 (UTC)
- @Kudpung: I am a bit tied up to be honest... but there's the shiny new Wikipedia:Request a query, maybe those folks could help. Otherwise I'll get to it when I can. If you can find those older discussions when we first deployed the New Page Reviewer right, that would help, as the Quarry queries that were linked in those discussions will be similar to the ones you're requesting. Re: your post at Wikipedia talk:Desysoppings by month
Hey, thanks again for the offer there. I'm also the primary maintainer of Wikipedia:Former administrators, which can be far more work than the desysoppings by month list, and I've been mulling over how a bot could help there. Perhaps the most tedious part of maintaining that list – and one that is amenable to automation – is distinguishing between regular inactive and long-term inactive users at Wikipedia:Former administrators/reason/inactive, Wikipedia:Former administrators/reason/resigned, and Wikipedia:Former administrators/reason/for cause. A bot designed for this task would ideally need admin access so it could view deleted contributions, but you already have MusikBot II that has these userrights. There are other tasks that could be automated, I guess ... the rolling list on the former admins main page, the list at Wikipedia:Former administrators/full, and the list of resysopped users, but these aren't so bad. Thanks again for your offer to help out, and the chance to make these suggestions. Graham87 05:01, 31 January 2017 (UTC)
- @Graham87: Hey, sorry for the late reply. Indeed, when I started clicking around I saw that you and others are manually updating stats all over the place! Now I'm a little overwhelmed... I am still interested in working on a bot solution but I think we should start with something simple and work our way out. Technically, the basic thing we're doing is regularly checking Special:Log (via the database, or API, haven't decided) and seeing if there are entries involving + or - sysop since the last run. The rest is figuring out why those changes happened. I'll be able to easily see if they were desysopped due to inactivity (just check last logged action, and maybe if the talk page notifications were sent), or if it was a bot, but some of the other classifications like "resigned", "compromised" or "for cause" are hard to determine. All we have is the log summary. Any idea how the bot could definitively classify these types of desysoppings? Or maybe human review is the most ideal? I guess my bigger question, is it really that helpful to have them classified in this way? Going by the pageviews, most of these pages aren't especially popular. E.g. Former admins/actions, reason/bots, reason/died, etc., all at around ~1 pageview a day, and that's including when you and I have been viewed those pages. Maybe we could devise a simpler presentation that is also more bot-friendly. What do you think? — MusikAnimal talk 22:49, 2 February 2017 (UTC)
- Weeeeeell, the former admins page was originally just a series of lists sorted by type (example ... warning: humungous page!), until Moe Epsilon reorganised it into a table. The page was split for sortability; looking at the discussion, it seems that my idea. I don't really have any ideas on how to make the page more bot-friendly, but I just thought it was worth explaining the context for why the page is the way it is. Moe, do you have any further thoughts? Graham87 05:16, 3 February 2017 (UTC)
- Most of this seems perfectly doable by a bot, it's just a lot of work when we might be able to satisfy people's needs with a simpler presentation. I think this format is very convenient, but it may be more than a weekend project. And again, it's easy enough to add a new row into a table, the hard part is figuring out what goes in the "Reason" column. What would be really cool is to have some sort of one-time data entry, maybe through templates you put on a wiki page, or much crazier – a web interface. That way you could enter in the "reason", etc., yourself, and the bot would update all the pages accordingly. That still amasses to an enormous amount of work, when a single table like Wikipedia:Former administrators/actions is much easier to implement, and we can simply show the summary in the user rights log as the reason — MusikAnimal talk 07:46, 3 February 2017 (UTC)

- Hi guys. I think a bot updating and maintaining the page would be a good idea, but the reason behind the desysop is always unclear and sometimes "cloudy." When I split WP:FORMER back in 2006, it was only separated was by the reason behind the desysop and it was fine for a while. The list before the revamp was missing hundreds of entries though, so I manually combed through the history of the former administrator page, bureaucrat resysops, historical mailing lists, Special:Log and the log of Meta-Wiki to find every + and - desysop entry ever made and the reason behind it. The good news is since all the past entries are done, it makes future entries not nearly as hard. So, maybe if a bot was created, it could update everything but the "reason" and then maybe make an entry/log on the talk page, for example, and alert folks to update the reason behind desysops. That's about the simplest solution I could see since it requires human eyes and sometimes digging to determine a reason. Regards, — Moe Epsilon 14:31, 3 February 2017 (UTC)
- Yes, that sounds reasonable to me (pun not intended). I guess having the bot fill in the reasons when it knows them (e.g. from a mention of inactivity in the logs) and leaving a question mark for those that it can't determine would be a good course of action. I also like the idea of having a template where you can fill in the values and letting the bot do the rest. Graham87 10:12, 4 February 2017 (UTC)
Sorry to pester you, but I know you can do this
Stats Table required, so 'ere it is again (no one appears to be watching the page you recommended)
I'm looking for ways to get the huge and still increasing backlog at Special:NewPagesFeed reduced. In November I poineered the rollout of the New Page Reviewer right. After three months I now need to know how it is performing and what the next steps will be. To do this I need the following data in sortable Wikitable form of New Page Reviewers showing:
- user name
- date of 'promotion'
- number of Curations
- date of last curation
- date of last edit.
- Admin yes/no
There are currently around 300 or so non-admin Reviewers in this user group, all the rest are admins (who besides myself, are unlikely to be patrolling new pages with the Curation tool. Is this something someone could quarry for me fairly quickly? I'm sorry I have to ask, but I don't have a clue about regex, SQL, or data mining - but once it's been done once and I know how, I could repeat the operation when I need it again. Thanks, Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 22:45, 4 February 2017 (UTC)
New Page Review - newsletter No.2
- A HUGE backlog
We now have 810 New Page Reviewers!
Most of us requested the user right at PERM, expressing a wish to be able to do something about the huge backlog, but the chart on the right does not demonstrate any changes to the pre-user-right levels of October.
The backlog is still steadily growing at a rate of 150 a day or 4,650 a month. Only 20 reviews a day by each reviewer over the next few days would bring the backlog down to a managable level and the daily input can then be processed by each reviewer doing only 2 or 3 reviews a day - that's about 5 minutes work!
It didn't work in time to relax for the Xmas/New Year holidays. Let's see if we can achieve our goal before Easter, otherwise by Thanksgiving it will be closer to 70,000.
- Second set of eyes
Remember that we are the only guardians of quality of new articles, we alone have to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged by non-Reviewer patrollers and that new authors are not being bitten.
- Abuse
This is even more important and extra vigilance is required considering Orangemoody, and
- this very recent case of paid advertising by a Reviewer resulting in a community ban.
- this case in January of paid advertising by a Reviewer, also resulting in a community ban.
- This Reviewer is indefinitely blocked for sockpuppetry.
Coordinator election

- I've blocked 2600:1017:b409:af8::/64 for 31 hours, which takes care of the 2600:1017:b409:af8:* IPs. I would make the block longer, but I did see one edit that appeared to be unrelated, though it was still not exactly constructive. There are no older edits in this range either, so I don't know how effective the block will be. They are editing from a mobile carrier, meaning they can simply move to another location and be reallocated to a new range. For now it's probably going to be a game of whack a mole, unfortunately — MusikAnimal talk 21:00, 5 February 2017 (UTC)
- Yeah, his favorite game. Thanks for the block. If things get crazy again I'll probably be back. (Meanwhile Favonian caught him using a regular IP instead of an IPv6.) --MelanieN (talk) 00:13, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

NPR
I've pre-empted and put you down here as an coordinator election committee member. If you've too much work on, delete it and I'll find someone else. It only really concerns checking that the candidates and voters are eligible and to tally up at the end. It's a first-past-the-post election. I'm not running. Newsletter about it goes out shortly.Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 03:55, 5 February 2017 (UTC)
- I guess I can help count tallies, sure, but I don't think I can commit to a coordinator position right now. Anyway thank you for the barnstar! And sorry to hear you're moving away from new page reviewing effort. Many thanks for all that you have done! — MusikAnimal talk 20:47, 5 February 2017 (UTC)
- Sorry if I confused you - I meant simply co-coordinator of the election process. There was no time to thrash all this out for months through RfCs until I hang my hat up for good, so I assumed you would be able to help vet the voters and help do the closure. What happens afterwards is up to them. Perhaps you can exercise your influence also with your friend Xaosflux about the WL notice he just reverted. It goes without saying that NPP is serious stuff and I've just got away from another hour-long live video conference with the Wikimedia Foundation about it.Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 01:05, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

Problems
- The block log sometimes showed blocks as being much longer than they were. This has now been fixed. [23]
Changes this week
- Wikimedia pages will now be better at showing pictures when you share them on social media. The descriptions will be different too. You can see an example of before and after. [24]
- There are some changes to the OOjs UI. Some old functions will not work anymore or not work as they used to. This could be a breaking change. [25]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 7 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 8 February. It will be on all wikis from 9 February (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 7 February at 20:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- Tidy will be replaced later this year. Instead, the HTML 5 parsing algorithm will be used to clean up bad HTML in wikitext. This will cause problems on a number of wikis. They need to be fixed first. You can see if your wiki still has something to fix here for one of the HTML problems. This list does not cover all problems. You can read about more problems. [26][27]

Edit Filter 777
Hi MusikAnimal! I've been following the 777 edit filter trying to track some long term abuse by a vandal (see User:EvergreenFir/socks#Present). It seems today it was made private. I was wondering if you could share why. The filter was altered right around the same time you protected a number of pages the vandal usually targets. The filter was useful in identifying that particular vandal (who seems to have been the subject of some older range blocks, but I cannot figure out what they're connected to and thus do not know where to report them other than to just send them to AIV when I see them). Anyway, just hoping I can be filled in a little. Cheers! EvergreenFir (talk) 05:40, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
- Sorry about that, I've made it public again :) Because of WP:BEANS we usually make these types of filters private, but it seems the vandal has not discovered it yet. Hopefully one day we'll have a permission for read-only access to private filters so that this is not a problem — MusikAnimal talk 05:54, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
- Thank you! I can remove links to the filter if it helps. Any suggestions as to where to report these IPs? I suspect this is a named LTA account but I know you can't publicly link IPs to accounts when a CU block is involved. EvergreenFir (talk) 06:07, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
Stats
I really need those stats now before I retire. If you don't have time, please let me know who I can contact. There is nobody watching the stats request page you mentioned. Thanks. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 19:48, 8 February 2017 (UTC)
- Sorry to keep pestering you. Please tell me who can do this. In a few days time I will no longer be able to do anything more for NPP or New Page Reviewing, and nobody else gives a monkey's. Believe me, if I knew how to do it myself I would stay up all night to do it - just like it's 03:46 in the morning here now. Perhaps even give me the instructions and the code for doing a quarry myself? Perhaps I might learn something in my old age. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 20:47, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
- @Kudpung: what needs querying? I can give it a damn good go or find someone who may be able to help? -- Samtar talk · contribs 20:50, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
- Thank you Samtar! I would recommend you/Kudpung sift back through those old discussions when we first rolled out NPR (you'll find them as quickly as I will). Several others ran some impressive Quarry queries that you could probably re-use. I'm sorry I can't help right now, I'm a little overwhelmed with work. Are you retiring retiring? Or just retiring from NPR? Either one is nothing to celebrate! — MusikAnimal talk 20:52, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
- There are a few who will, like children, jump up and down and clap their hands with glee (I won't mention their names). After being told to my face by a WMF employee on a Skype conference last week that my efforts to improve NPP are nothing more than an organised 'pissing contest', I guess it's fair to say that I'm thoroughly pissed off. Typo on BLP edit counter
Just a heads-up: the BLP edit counter says User has approximently number edits to biographies of living persons'. Should of course be approximately. AddWittyNameHere (talk) 19:40, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
- Fixed! Thank you for the report :) That misspelling/typo has been there for ages! — MusikAnimal talk 00:05, 10 February 2017 (UTC)
- You're welcome! :) It's small enough that I suspect most folks either didn't notice or couldn't be bothered to report it. Or couldn't be arsed to read either the URL or the bottom of the page to figure out who to alert, that's also an option... AddWittyNameHere (talk) 00:11, 10 February 2017 (UTC)
I've altered the editnotice to give guidance for users nominating other users. Could you check it complies with your expectations. Thanks, Cabayi (talk) 15:59, 10 February 2017 (UTC)
- Looks good, thank you Cabayi! Indeed it is common for users nominating other users to end up effectively nominating themselves, so hopefully this will help — MusikAnimal talk 17:48, 10 February 2017 (UTC)

Recent changes
- EventStreams is a new way to show activity on Wikimedia wikis. For now it works with the recent changes feed. It will do more things later. It will replace RCStream. Tools that use RCStream should move to EventStreams before 7 July. [28]
Problems
- The Firefox add-on Firefogg can cause problems with the Upload Wizard. This will not be fixed, because Firefox will not support Firefogg in the future. The Upload Wizard will no longer work with Firefogg. [29]
- Tool Labs and Wikimedia Labs databases will be under maintenance on 15 February. This will start at 17:00 (UTC) and last for about six hours. Some tools could have problems during or after this. [30]
Changes this week
- The TwoColConflict extension is a new way to solve edit conflicts. It makes it easier to copy and paste the relevant text to the text field. It will come to Meta and German Wikipedia this week. It is already available on MediaWiki.org. It will come to more wikis later. [31]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 14 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 15 February. It will be on all wikis from 16 February (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 14 February at 20:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- Page Previews will be turned on for logged-out users on the Catalan, Greek, Russian, and Italian Wikipedias in the middle of February. Page Previews shows readers a short part of a linked article when they rest their mouse pointer on the link. This is to help them understand what it is about without leaving the article they are reading. Page Previews used to be called Hovercards. It will come to more wikis later this spring. [32]
- The Developer Wishlist is a list where developers prioritize tools they need. The voting closes at 14 February 23:59 (UTC). This process is only for developers.
Review
- You can read the 2016 product summary from the Wikimedia Foundation Product group to see what they did with things they said they would work on in the annual plan.

Addition of un-redirected pages to Special:NewPages and Special:NewPagesFeed
I'm contacting you because you participated in this proposal discussion. While the proposal was approved, it has not received developer action. The request is now under consideration as part of the 2017 Developer Wishlist, with voting open through the end of day on Tuesday (23:59 UTC). The latter link describes the voting process, if you are interested. —swpbT 18:02, 13 February 2017 (UTC)
- @Swpb: All due respect, but this doesn't seem relevant to the Developer Wishlist. This change would affect users of the extension, but how does it affect developers? — MusikAnimal talk 18:36, 13 February 2017 (UTC)
Fishhead2100
Fishhead2100 added a source for a move name on Dean Ambrose. The source was from iTech, yet the article didn't mention the moves name. They then added one from RollingStone.com that did mention it by name. So, once that one was added, I removed the iTech article since it never mentioned the move's name, with an edit summary stating as much. Fishhead then went and reverted my edit, without give a reason. (talk page stalker) CrashUnderride 18:25, 15 February 2017 (UTC)
- If you don't get that I referenced what the move is not just the name of it being "Orange Crush," than that is not my problem. You've been edit waring. It can get you reported. Mr. C.C.Hey yo!I didn't do it! 19:00, 15 February 2017 (UTC)
- Where is this being discussed on the talk page? Edit summaries don't count. Since you're both here, I'll give the fair warning about the three-revert rule and edit warring in general... which I'm pretty sure you are both already aware of. If you discussed on the talk page you wouldn't need to cram your justification into an edit summary, and pollute the revision history with back-and-forth editing. Talk it through, assume good faith, and remember edit warring isn't acceptable even if you believe your version is correct. WP:BRD is a good practice to follow in situations like this — MusikAnimal talk 19:36, 15 February 2017 (UTC)
- @Fishhead2100 and Crash Underride: Pings to make sure you see this — MusikAnimal talk 19:40, 15 February 2017 (UTC)
- Animal, no worries, I'm watching your talk page. I talked to Fishhead about it at User talk:WarMachineWildThing#Dean Ambrose. The discussion you where complaining about was the name not the move itself. Hence why I removed it. (talk page stalker) CrashUnderride 20:06, 15 February 2017 (UTC)
UAA log
Hello MusikAnimal, Would it be possible to make a log of all the users that have been reported to UAA? I assume it would be like the CSD log. It would help me keep track of my relative accuracy in reporting users, as opposed to going through the history of the page, finding out who I reported, etc etc. Thanks. -- Iazyges Consermonor Opus meum 21:26, 15 February 2017 (UTC)

For all those handy userscripts you wrote. They truly improve the editing experience ! Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 21:01, 16 February 2017 (UTC) |
I remember the "good old days" where blocking a promotional account required:
- Opening a page to check it.
- Tagging it with twinkle.
- Deleting the page.
- Looking at the deleted pages history who created it since I forgot to open their userpage beforehand.
- Heading to the userpage itself
- Actually blocking the editor
Then came along the lovely {{spamublock}} button which by now saved me hundred and quite likely thousands of clicks. Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 21:01, 16 February 2017 (UTC)
- Hehe, thank you Excirial! It's this sense of reward that keeps me going :) Some things just shouldn't be done by humans, like steps 2 through 6. The only one that required your judgement was #1. Proposed deletion of Sleeping gas
The article Sleeping gas has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- There are no references cited to support notability of the article subject WP:GNG. a Google search revealed no WP:RS compliant sources to support notability. Most statements in this article are unsourced WP:OR. The only referenced part of the article, "Bolivian Rapes", is better suited to be merged with the article Incapacitating agent.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. loupgarous (talk) 03:13, 15 February 2017 (UTC)
- @Vfrickey: This notice is meant for the author of the article. Several of the people you sent this to are minor contributors at best, and in my case, I merely made a single edit reverting vandalism over 2 years ago. Please consider undoing the notices you issued — MusikAnimal talk 03:20, 15 February 2017 (UTC)
- I regret any inconvenience the notification caused you. However, the guidance doesn't specify a level of contribution at which editors active on an article proposed for deletion are to be notified. I didn't intend to annoy you, but in the absence of any such guidance, I'm proceeding as I was advised by the WP:PROD template. Thanks for the advice. loupgarous (talk) 03:29, 15 February 2017 (UTC)
- @Vfrickey: WP:PRODNOM mentions notifying major contributors. Please do not notify users who made minor edits, especially patrollers as they likely did not look at the article at all, rather witnessed vandalism when reviewing recent changes. If the edit summary was "reverting edit" or the like, you probably should not notify them. Instead look for users who added content — MusikAnimal talk 03:36, 15 February 2017 (UTC)
- I appreciate the information, and will do as you suggest. It's a pity that's not an automated process, Sleeping gas has ~500 edits. Thanks for the advice. Do you wish to delete this section? I have no issues with you so doing. loupgarous (talk) 03:39, 15 February 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks for your recent edits to Sleeping gas. They did improve the article, but do not establish the notability of the logical entity Sleeping gas. However, they would be good additions to the articles Incapacitating agent and General anaesthetic.
- But regarding one of your user summaries, the US chemical warfare agent with NATO code BZ, 3-Quinuclidinyl benzilate, isn't a sedative or sleeping agent - it's a deliriant. Its typical effects include induction of stupor, but not somnolence or sleep. There are other errors like that in our article Sleeping gas which, even when corrected or properly supported by a source don't change the fact that the article's subject isn't notable. loupgarous (talk) 04:40, 15 February 2017 (UTC)
- No problem. I went by the source that said BZ was known as "sleeping gas". Whether or not it puts you to sleep, not sure. This is not my field of expertise, nor am I particularly interested in it, I just didn't think the page on this term should be deleted. You claim it's not notable, but I see usage of the term in a wide variety of reliable sources, including the ones I added. It seems to me more like an umbrella term, and in that sense perhaps it's not notable. For instance, I didn't find any scientific or medical literature defining such a term. I think it is most closely tied to incapacitating agent and content should be merged there, in which case we can make sleeping gas redirect, but I don't have to time to work on that right now :/. If all else fails, consider redirecting, not deleting! Best — MusikAnimal talk 17:02, 15 February 2017 (UTC)
- "Merge with incapacitating agent, and redirect" seems our consensus. If I can find the time, I'll learn how to do both, then do them with sleeping gas. It would definitely improve incapacitating agent. Thanks for your time on this project. loupgarous (talk) 08:34, 18 February 2017 (UTC)

X!'s Tools
Do you know what Admin Actions: Delete
stands for on X!'s Tools' Edit Counter? Since I've never been an admin on pt-wiki, I figure it shouldn't stand for pages I've deleted. Thanks! --ArgonSim (talk) 13:38, 19 February 2017 (UTC)
- @ArgonSim: Well this is odd. XTools is not lying... I see you have 3 entries in your deletion log, and also a whole page of blocks that you appear to have made. You sure you were never an admin? :) I don't see any admin rights changes in your user rights log either, so I guess this a bug in MediaWiki — MusikAnimal talk 22:38, 20 February 2017 (UTC)
- Now I see what happened! Those three entries correspond to previously existing pages that were overwritten after I renamed an article. By the way, users with rollback rights on pt-wiki can also block obvious vandals for a short amount of time, so that's why I have an extensive block log. Thank you for your help! --ArgonSim (talk) 22:55, 20 February 2017 (UTC)
Image cropping
Hi, MusikAnimal, hope you're doing well. What is the policy on image cropping? And how do you crop an image? Thanks, Castncoot (talk) 23:20, 18 February 2017 (UTC)
- Hi MusikAnimal, will knock one more time. :) Castncoot (talk) 19:56, 20 February 2017 (UTC)
- @Castncoot: Hey! Sorry for the late reply. Are you talking about images on Commons? Image policy is a bit outside my expertise, but I think you can more or less adapt any image provided you give attribution as requested. There is actually a cropping tool, look for "CropTool" under the "Tools" heading when viewing an image. I have never used it, but I assume it will have you upload a new image and automatically give attribution to the old one. The same rules should apply here on Wikipedia – if the license permits, you can modify the image as you see fit (with attribution). The folks at Wikipedia talk:Image use policy would know more. Hope this helps, and hope you are doing well :) Best — MusikAnimal talk 22:30, 20 February 2017 (UTC)

- Yes I believe I might have. For that I used my Mac's "Preview" app to do simple cropping, the went back through the upload process again. It seems the CropTool would have been easier — MusikAnimal talk 04:26, 21 February 2017 (UTC)

The future of NPP and AfC
Voting for coordinators has now begun HERE and will continue through/to 23:59 UTC Monday 06 March. The coordinators will do their best for for the advancement of the improvement of NPP and AfC and generally keep tracks on the development of those things. Coordinators have no additional or special user benefits, but they will be 'go to' people and will try to keep discussions in the right places. This very much involves this project too, especially with growing renewed interest around the site about what WP:ACTRIAL was all about.

For your recent comment on WP:ARCA I bestow upon you this Barnstar. You have succinctly and passionately argued why the current ban of new editors from all things related Israel or Palestine is against our very spirit and done so much more eloquently than I could ever have done, although I share your thoughts almost exactly. Let's hope your passionate speech can persuade ArbCom to reconsider this restriction. Regards SoWhy 08:51, 23 February 2017 (UTC) |

Problems
- On 22 February the wikipedia.org portal did not work for an hour. This was because of a problem with a JavaScript file. [37]
Changes this week
- You will be able to use
<chem>
to write chemical formulas in the visual editor. Previously this only worked in the wikitext editor. [38] - The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 28 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 1 March. It will be on all wikis from 2 March (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 28 February at 20:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- You can soon upload 3D files to Commons. The file formats are AMF and STL. The plan is for this to work later this week but it could be later. [39]
- The name "Wikipedia" will be more obvious at the top of the page when you read Wikipedia in the mobile view. This is because many readers don't realize they are on Wikipedia. [40][41]

WP:ANEWS question
Hey MusikAnimal, thanks for sending out the last admin newsletter, it's great! One question about the process improvements you made - the subject was in Wikipedia:Administrators' newsletter/Mass message but you later removed it. The guide states that a subject shouldn't be added. Is that still correct? I can't see that a subject would currently be added from anywhere. Thanks, Sam Walton (talk) 14:59, 6 March 2017 (UTC)
- No problem, I updated the instructructions. I wanted to automate the subject line to avoid typos but then I discovered Special:MassMessage won't let you.

4th GA Cup - The Final
Hello, GA Cup competitors! Sunday, February 26 saw the end of Round 3. Shearonink finished in first with 616 points, which is more than the point totals for all the other competitors combined! In second place, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga earned an impressive 152 points, followed by Sturmvogel_66 in third with 111 points. Chris troutman and Kees08 each received a wild-card and were able to advance to the Final Round. There was a major error on the part of the judges, and initially, 8 users were advanced instead of 5. This has been corrected, and we sincerely apologize for this confusion. In Round 3, 71 reviews were completed! At the beginning of this GA Cup, the longest wait was over 7 months; at the end of Round 3, the longest wait is still holding steady at a little over 6 months, the same as for the previous round. By the end of all three Rounds, the total number of nominations increased slightly - this suggests that users are more willing to nominate, knowing that their articles will be reviewed. We hope to see all remaining users fighting it out in the Final so we can keep tackling the backlog. In the Final Round, the user with the highest score will be the winner. The Final has already started and will end on March 31st at 23:59:59 UTC. Information about Finals and the pools can be found here. Good luck and have fun! Cheers from Figureskatingfan, 3family6, Jaguar, and MrWooHoo. To subscribe or unsubscribe to future GA Cup newsletters, please add or remove your name to our mailing list. If you are a participant still competing, you will be on the mailing list no matter what as this is the easiest way to communicate between all participants.

Recent changes
- You can now search on English, French, Hebrew and Greek wikis and find words even if you forget the diacritics. It also works if you use diacritics in your search but the wiki doesn't. [42]
- When you use the mobile view and click on a link to an article in another language you will see that article in the mobile view. Previously it changed to the desktop view. [43]
Problems
- Some watchlist gadgets didn't work for a period of time last week. This has now been fixed. [44]
- Admins who click on "mass delete" on a user's Special:Contributions will be taken directly to a list pages created by that user. It has worked like this before, but not lately. [45]
Changes this week
- The way you switch between wikitext and the visual editors in the desktop view has changed. It is now a drop-down menu. This is the same as in the mobile view. [46]
- The "flag the edit in the abuse log" checkbox will be removed from the abuse filter interface. This is because the edits are always flagged in the abuse log. [47]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 7 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 8 March. It will be on all wikis from 9 March (calendar).

Is it possible to combine Wikipedia search results with WMFlabs pageviews tool?
Dear MusikAnimal
I'm trying to set up a process to allow UNESCO staff members and muggles like me to easily see where text from UNESCO publications is used on Wikipedia and the number of times the pages it is used on are seen. I spoke to Jarry1250 about this and he gave me a way of searching Wikipedia to find all the uses of the template used to credit open source text that includes text from UNESCO. Its not really practical to add everything to a category to do the counting because it is a huge amount of work to keep the category up to date and easy to miss new articles.
Is there a simple way to automatically input the results of a search result like this into the pageviews tool of WMFlabs? The issue would remain that there would be overcounting of page views for text added to already existing articles where the open license text had been added recently but it would be much much better than the current process of counting everything one page at a time. Also if there is an easier way to do this do let me know, I'm very much cobbling this together as I go along.
Thanks
--John Cummings (talk) 11:06, 7 March 2017 (UTC)
- @John Cummings: As far as I know there's no way to do this right now, but I think adding support for arbitrary searches is an excellent idea. There is another Pageviews app called Massviews that was built to process large amounts of data, given various "sources" that return a list of pages. We could simply add the normal search as a new "source". I've created a ticket at phab:T159858, you can follow it for updates. This shouldn't be hard to implement so I would expect it to be out sometime soon, maybe the next week or two. Best — MusikAnimal talk 17:26, 7 March 2017 (UTC)
- Hi MusikAnimal, this is amazing, thanks so much :) My hope is this will allow me to create one click reporting for all the Wikipedia articles using an organisation's text. I will start using this with UNESCO for our official visibility report as soon as it is available. Thanks again--John Cummings (talk) 17:46, 7 March 2017 (UTC)
- @John Cummings: Your words are inspiring... and this was really easy, so I went ahead and did it :) See [48] for an example of your query. I just wanted to also say that I have this dream to go to every UNESCO World Heritage Site in the world. It will take a lifetime, but anyway, it is very cool to build something benefiting an organization I so deeply admire. Cheers :D — MusikAnimal talk 19:04, 7 March 2017 (UTC)
- Other cool things that might interest you: You can download the data as CSV or JSON. Also if you wanted to use an image of the chart in your visibility report, click on "Chart" at the top-right (to show the chart), then Download > PNG — MusikAnimal talk 19:07, 7 March 2017 (UTC)

Newsflash... Newbie editors don't read

- @NeilN: They're using the mobile interface, so no edit notices, scripts, or any control over what is shown to the user :( — MusikAnimal talk 02:38, 10 March 2017 (UTC)

Changes this week
- You will be able to show references from
<references />
tags in more than one column on your wiki. This is the list of footnotes for the sources in the article. How many columns you see will depend on how big your screen is. On some wikis, some templates already do this. Templates that use<references />
tags will need to be updated, and then later the change can happen for all reference lists. [50][51] - The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 14 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 15 March. It will be on all wikis from 16 March (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 14 March at 19:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- Some old web browsers will not be able to use JavaScript on Wikimedia wikis in the future. If you have an old web browser on your computer you can upgrade to a newer version. [52]
- CSS in templates will be stored in a separate page in the future. [53][54]

A cup of coffee for you!
Can you say whether Massviews is able to generate a report for articles within a WikiProject?
For WP:WikiProject Sanitation for example, Template:WikiProject Sanitation is on the talk page of all articles in that project. However, a "transclusion" query will return traffic to to talk pages, and not to the articles themselves. Is there a way to get traffic to the articles with this tool? |
- @Bluerasberry: Thanks for the coffee! For WikiProjects, try going off the category. So in this case add the full URL to Category:WikiProject Sanitation articles, then select "Use subject page instead of talk page". Viola! :)Community Tech has also revived the Popular Pages bot. We can add WikiProject Sanitation so that every month, a report of the most-viewed pages will be put on the subpage of your choice. To do this you'll need to add the WikiProject to the config, which I'm happy to do for you, just let me know! — MusikAnimal talk 21:17, 13 March 2017 (UTC)

in the sidebar. Developers can also get monthly page views through the API. [57] - The Linter extension is now on smaller Wikimedia wikis. It helps editors find some wikitext errors so they can be fixed. It will come to other Wikimedia wikis later. The extension will be able to find more errors later. [58]
- The MediaWiki-Vagrant portable development environment has been updated to use Debian Jessie. This means local development and testing will be more like on the majority of Wikimedia production servers. [59]
Problems
- On 15 March some interwiki links to other languages were not correctly sorted. This has been fixed. If you still see pages where the interwiki links are not sorted as they should be, they should be fixed automatically with time or you can edit the page and save it without changing anything. Sunday March 26: Action=History Wiki-Hackathon @ Ace Hotel | |
---|---|
On the last Sunday of every month, the Boardroom at Ace Hotel New York hosts Action Equals History — a unique opportunity for New Yorkers to learn hands-on in a technology training/workshop session about the mechanics, practices and benefits of Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects. This is an opportunity for all to gather, share and work collectively towards a more robust account of history. For this month, and following on the recent Art+Feminism campaign, we'll focus on building better edit-a-thon tools for a variety of different thematic campaigns, and user-testing them with the community. Towards a goal of advancing these tools for wider use with diverse local groups.

SvG Audit
I am starting to think more about the audit process after the clean-up of the SvG articles in done, due for 24 April 2017. See User:Aymatth2/SvG clean-up/Audit notes. Any comments welcome. My guess is that most editors who worked on the clean-up did a careful review and fix-up for articles in areas they found interesting. A few editors may have been more impatient and slapdash and moved back a lot of articles without much checking, more on a "looks o.k." basis. The articles they restored probably have to be deleted. Question: Is there a way to generate a list of all the articles moved back to mainspace, e.g. [62], that shows the editor who moved the article back to mainspace? Or just a count by editor? Then we could take a careful look at the quality of the moves the most active editors did.
I am not sure that looking for "rogue editors" makes sense, but it seems worth checking. Thanks, Aymatth2 (talk) 23:07, 19 March 2017 (UTC)

- @JJMC89: That is amazing! Exactly what is needed. Ideally, if it is not too much effort, it would be good to recreate the lists on 24 April 2017 just before all the drafts are deleted. Would that be possible? If not, and assuming there is no last-minute surge of page restores, this list would be enough to support the audit. Thanks, Aymatth2 (talk) 15:46, 20 March 2017 (UTC)

- @Aymatth2: It can be rerun as needed. I'm likely to forget, so ping me when you would like it rerun. — JJMC89 (T·C) 06:17, 21 March 2017 (UTC)
Maria Reynolds page
Your MusikBot automated procedure has repeatedly removed the protection templates from a page that was put under protection due to repeated vandalism. Please see my discussion on the related talk page and even the recent page history will convince of the wisdom of the choice (that was not even mine) to put the Maria Reynolds page under partial protection. Thank you for your attention. Isananni (talk) 13:16, 23 March 2017 (UTC)
- @Isananni: Protection expired yesterday and only administrators can protect/re-protect articles. --NeilN talk to me 13:49, 23 March 2017 (UTC)
- @Isananni: Yes, you can be assured that if the bot removes the template, the page is in fact unprotected. Re-adding the template by itself will not protect the page – you need an admin to do that, as NeilN said. You request pages be protected at WP:RFPP — MusikAnimal talk 16:46, 23 March 2017 (UTC)
Template:Z179
Sorry about that I must have not clicked it correctly to turn it off. By the way using the noinclude doesn't work either. You have to uncheck both. CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Sunasuttuq 19:12, 24 March 2017 (UTC)

MusikBot and DYK
MusikAnimal, the bot hasn't updated the DYK nominations page for two nights now, March 26 and March 27. I've done the manual updates in both cases, but I thought you'd want to know about this. The bot has been doing other takes, just not this one for DYK. Many thanks for anything you can do; it's been wonderfully convenient having the bot take care of this chore. BlueMoonset (talk) 01:11, 27 March 2017 (UTC)
- @BlueMoonset: Hmm, I don't see any errors in the bot's logs. Did the format of the page change at all recently? As far as I know it wasn't conflicting with the new DYK process, but maybe it is. I will try to look into more soon but probably won't get to it tonight — MusikAnimal talk 15:04, 27 March 2017 (UTC)
- MusikAnimal, I don't see any format changes; here are the page changes from right before the last successful MusikBot update to the present, so anything deleted was there when the bot last worked. There also weren't any edits to the page that would have directly interfered with the bot. I'll check again tonight, and do the update manually if the bot doesn't. BlueMoonset (talk) 15:19, 27 March 2017 (UTC)
- It ran successfully tonight. I won't be around tomorrow night at 00:00, so any checks I make will be well after the fact. BlueMoonset (talk) 01:50, 28 March 2017 (UTC)

- Following a discussion on the backlog of unpatrolled files, consensus was found to create a new user right for autopatrolling file uploads. Implementation progress can be tracked on Phabricator.
- The BLPPROD grandfather clause, which stated that unreferenced biographies of living persons were only eligible for proposed deletion if they were created after March 18, 2010, has been removed following an RfC.
- An RfC has closed with consensus to allow proposed deletion of files. The implementation process is ongoing.
- After an unsuccessful proposal to automatically grant IP block exemption, consensus was found to relax the criteria for granting the user right from needing it to wanting it.
- After a recent RfC, moved pages will soon be featured in a queue similar to Special:NewPagesFeed and require patrolling. Moves by administrators, page movers, and autopatrolled editors will be automatically marked as patrolled.
- Cookie blocks have been deployed. This extends the current autoblock system by setting a cookie for each block, which will then autoblock the user if they switch accounts, even under a new IP.
Desysopped

Good one [66]. I saw it in my notifications, and spent a while looking for a reason for the desysopping before I twigged. Optimist on the run (talk) 21:51, 1 April 2017 (UTC) |

Unreasonably Deleted Article

- I did not delete the article. My bot removed a protection template from it because it was not protected — MusikAnimal talk 10:46, 2 April 2017 (UTC)
