Article Feedback newsletter
Hey all!
So, big news this week - on Tuesday, we ramped up to 5 percent of articles :). There's been a lot more feedback (pardon the pun) as I'm sure you've noticed, and to try and help we've scheduled a large number of office hours sessions, including one this evening at 22:00 UTC in the #wikimedia-office connect channel, and another at 01:00 UTC for the aussies amongst us :). I hope to see some of you there - if any of you can't make it but have any questions, I'm always happy to help.
Thanks! Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 20:48, 20 July 2012 (UTC)

This page used to be called "Americas' Central Securities Depositories Association" and got changed by to "Mergers & Acquisitions International Clearing House" by IP user 112.198.79.240. Additionally references to this ficticous organization have been added all over Wikipedia by another user 111.68.49.186. I think this could have been used for phishing or a scam, but it clearly does not exist. Thanks for your understanding. 74.246.221.201 (talk) 05:14, 23 July 2012 (UTC)

Oppose count wrong
Monty, the oppose count at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/SarahStierch is incorrect. I'm assuming the sock vote is being counted, but Keepscases moved to support, and yet it still shows a count of 2. I tried fixing it (using # where I thought needed), but the only thing that worked was to remove the hat template, which apparently is interfering. Any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks.--Bbb23 (talk) 23:53, 25 July 2012 (UTC)
- It looks to me like the count at the top of the page is now 170/0/2, and correct, and User:TParis/Tally shows its been X/0/2 for awhile. Where are you seeing the erroneous count? Monty845 00:02, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
- As far as I can tell, the issue was ultimately resolved with this edit. But if there is still a bad count displaying somewhere, point me at it. Monty845 00:07, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
- I was reading the count wrong and thought it was 2 opposes instead of 2 neutrals. You won't believe the amount of time I spent trying to fix a problem that didn't exist. I feel pretty silly - sorry to have bothered you.--Bbb23 (talk) 00:15, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
- No problem, and now I know how those templates work as a bonus! Monty845 00:17, 26 July 2012 (UTC)

Hey Monty
I really appreciate your help! See Alex Gilbert is also a music producer. Hes not big but he is also on http://www.mtv.com/artists/alex-gilbert/. I have seen many Wikipedia pages with a small page with people I have never heard of before. It is possible I know :-) If you can help out that would be much appreciated so much! http://alexgilbertnz.com/ I found this Database of Information on Alex Gilbert http://procityclaim.jumpwiki.com/wiki/ProCity_Claim .

- www.imdb.com/name/nm4338251/
Please let me know if you can help out at all. Thank you! I was thinking personally. Notable for working on 'Emperor' with Film Director - Peter Webber.
Thanks again! --Filmsandtv2012report (talk) 05:13, 7 September 2012 (UTC)
- I looked through the links you provided, first anything that accepts user contributions, including other wikis such as procityclaim.jumpwiki.com/wiki/Alex_Gilbert, is not going count as a reliable source, and thus cannot contribute towards establishing notability. The only one of those links that really seems like you can make a case for it being a reliable source is http://www.showbiz411.com/2011/08/16/kanye-jay-z-throne-full-of-samples-will-fall-short-sales-wise but that link has another problem, it is just a passing mention that another recording sampled one of his songs. To really establish notability, what you want to find is an article that is on him specifically, or at least spends a signifigant amount of time focused on him, and that was published in an independent reliable source, the classic example would be an article about him in a newspaper, or a review of one of his works in one. While webpages that are not mirrors of traditional media can be reliable sources, they need to be looked at closely to see if the qualify under WP:RS. If you can find 2-3 independent, reliable sources that provide substantive discussion about him, you should be able to meet the General Notability Guidelines. Note, individuals can also qualify under WP:BIO, but I don't see anything that suggests he will qualify that way. Monty845 05:28, 7 September 2012 (UTC)
Oh dam. I have also found this http://www.northernadvocate.co.nz/news/and-cut-these-boys-have-what-it-takes/1030947/ .
I will have a research through and see what I can find. Thanks for your help. --Filmsandtv2012report (talk) 05:39, 7 September 2012 (UTC) One more thing. I created this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Filmsandtv2012report/Alex_Gilbert as a start and also found this http://www.fromdumpstertodinnerplate.com/filmmakers . He also has an article at http://www.imdb.com/name/nm4338251/publicity which I can not find online :-( He did also work on this award winning short - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VA1ZJj0JpzQ&feature=relmfu . But yes has http://itunes.apple.com/nz/album/these-lyrics-feat.-maria-demerdjieva/id522226196 on iTunes.

Punishment
I just read your essay. You might like to consider this bit of classic behavioral psychology:
Pleasant response Unpleasant response Presented Positive reinforcement: - I give you a barnstar
Positive punishment: - I yell at you
Taken away Negative punishment: - I take away your ability to edit
Negative reinforcement: - I ignore your drama-laden comment
Blocking, as a withdrawal of normal, desired abilities, is a clear example of negative punishment. WhatamIdoing (talk) 03:08, 11 September 2012 (UTC)

AFT5 newsletter
Hey again all :). So, some big news, some small news, some good news, some bad news!
On the "big news" front; we've now deployed AFT5 on to 10 percent of articles, This is pretty awesome :). On the "bad news", however, it looks like we're having to stop at 10 percent until around September - there are scaling issues that make it dangerous to deploy wider. Happily, our awesome features engineering team is looking into them as we speak, and I'm optimistic that the issues will be resolved.
For both "small" and "good" news; we've got another office hours session. This one is tomorrow, at 22:00 UTC in #wikimedia-office connect - I appreciate it's a bit late for Europeans, but I wanted to juggle it so US east coasters could attend if they wanted :). Hope to see you all there!

knowing that you have received the seldom coveted THUMBS UP AWARD for coming to the aid of a stricken fellow editor at the Sculptors Guild article. Disambiguation link notification for December 5
Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited John Boyd (military strategist), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page F-X (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Sorry
Monty, I want to apologize for mistakenly thinking you were not an admin. :) I initially looked at the bottom of your user page and it didn't show it, so I assumed you weren't. Then I saw your note and another one on my talk page and realized you are.
In terms of my block, there seems to be a gang mentality when an editor is blocked, especially when it's an IP, regardless of how minor the infraction is. Numerous editors showing up to comment on a blocked user's talk page, which I've seen many times, is like 10 police officers issuing a speeding ticket to someone. :p It's overkill and only serves to escalate an already-volatile situation. No one ever told me specifically what I did to warrant a block or provided any diffs to show inappropriate editing in that article so I could understand and respond to it. If someone looks at my edits, they'll see I was simply advocating for my position. Passionately? Yes. In violation of any rules? Not that I'm aware of. All my posts were focused on a content issue that I felt needed improved. And the funny part is that I made zero edits to the two Sandy Hook articles in question; I couldn't, because they are protected. I simply participated in talk page discussions.
I did remove two brief references by another editor on an article talk because I considered them inappropriate and harassing, and I read a talk page guideline that said under such circumstances they can be removed. Instead of greeting me by my IP name like almost every other editor does (IP 76, or 76, or no greeting at all), the editor chose to address me as "IP from (city name)". I knew it didn't actually violate WP:OUTING, but certainly was similar since it of course served no purpose whatsoever to reveal my city on an article talk page, other than to intimidate me. I of course realize that someone's IP city can easily be found online, but that doesn't mean that an editor should be announcing another editor's residence location on a talk page. There's absolutely no valid reason for it other than to annoy someone. So that editor asked about my removal at ANI and of course was told it doesn't violate WP:OUTING, which was not specifically the issue. If he was an IP and did that, I'm confident he would've been told to knock it off. But since it was a registered user vs. an IP, unfortunately no one had the guts to stand up and just tell him he shouldn't have done it, even if it doesn't violate Outing. The other removal I made was the editor inappropriately announcing on the article talk page that he filed an ANI report about my removal of the content. This was after he had already told me on my talk page and he knew I had already seen it. So, again, there was absolutely no reason to post it on the article talk page, nor was it appropriate to do it there. Again, there was no purpose for that other than to try and humiliate me in front of many other editors. He even bolded it, which indicated his intention. It's really sad to see how IPs are so frequently treated like second-class citizens.
Anyway, after the ANI I was blocked a few minutes later, yet had no idea why. My "aggressive tone", as it was described, only occurred after the block while I was attempting (unsuccessfully) to find out exactly what I did wrong. I simply wanted to see any relevant diffs that showed the bad editing which supposedly warranted my block. It was never provided. That's when numerous editors started jumping in and piling on. Please understand, though, that I'm not looking for answers to those questions any more; I simply wanted you to know what was going through my head as this block situation was happening.
Btw, it's also very sad to see an administrator mocking a user (me), as Dennis did above ("Give them about 30 more hours and I'm sure they will find a way" (to get blocked longer), instead of saying something like "Hopefully, we won't have any more problems with them" or "Hopefully, when the block is over everything will be fine". Making fun of another editor like that – even one that got blocked – is not helpful and can only cause more problems. His comment almost sounds like he hopes I'll do something to get blocked again. That is very disappointing. When an editor sees sarcasm and unfriendliness like that from an administrator, it automatically makes you think that you can't trust that admin to be fair. And quite to the contrary of what Dennis claimed, I am very interested in facts. This name issue is about policy and article improvement, which is all I'm concerned about. If someone disagrees with my views, that's fine. But to personally insult someone for their views isn't right. If you want, see the "Edit request - Sandy Hook School" thread at Talk:Newtown Public Schools to see what content I've had a concern about. All I've been trying to do is have a fair balance, based on policy.
In any case, I'm sorry for not realizing you were an administrator. Congratulations and good luck with that. --76.189.123.142 (talk) 00:22, 18 December 2012 (UTC)

Request for Reviewer
Hi, I noticed you approved two requests for reviewer permission, each of which at been requested less than three hours prior to you approval. - Eh, its a case of taking the easiest ones, rather then taking more time to analyze a less clear case. Its not uncommon in other areas with administrative backlogs either. Its better for something to get action out of order then for everything to wait. Still, in response to your comment I'm taking a look at your request. Monty845 22:19, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

- I didn't notice that, thanks. Given how quickly it hopped, and that the editor didn't seem to realize either, I'm guessing the IP is changing fast enough that playing whack a mole would fruitless, at least unless the abuse resumes. Monty845 21:52, 13 January 2013 (UTC)

Suitable block notice
Hello Monty845! Regarding this vandalism only account User talk:Gayladygaga, I believe the most suitable block notice for it will be, this one [2] as it addresses both the concerns required in one template. Just a friendly note :) Regards. ~TheGeneralUser (talk) 15:40, 17 January 2013 (UTC)
- My sense is that the username is somewhat borderline when it comes to justification for a hard username block, and that there is a stronger case for the account being intended only for vandalism, which still takes into consideration the choice of username. Rather not stretch a block justification when there is a separate perfectly good one. Monty845 16:44, 17 January 2013 (UTC)

I do believe a ban is called for now after they've been consistently trolling my talk page. See User talk:Jackie55667788. Thanks, Dismas|(talk) 19:59, 23 January 2013 (UTC)
- I have indefinitely blocked them as a trolling/disruption only account. Note that a single admin may not ban an editor, a ban is the formal rejection of an editor from the community and can only happen after a discussion on a noticeboard or as a result of an Arbcom decision. I think blocking is all that is required here, a ban would be overkill based on their conduct so far. Monty845 06:41, 24 January 2013 (UTC)

Just as with CU, I can see rare situations where it makes sense to make an "OS block, don't reverse" type block, but these should be very rare, and we admin need enough information to understand the block since it has so little oversight. The Adventures of Timmy the Tooth response
The only reason I have been doing many corrections on The Adventures of Timmy the Tooth page is because some people think it was a production of The Jim Henson Company when it wasn't. Some of those people even think that the company in question was a silent partner to the productions that made that show. Just letting you know that. Rtkat3 (talk) 10:59, March 13 2013 (UTC)
- I understand, I just think it will just be easier to deal with the ongoing issue if there is at least an attempt to start a discussion on the talk page. Monty845 15:02, 13 March 2013 (UTC)
Your ANI evaluation
"OGBranniff appears generally be editing within behavioral guidelines".
Really?! Can you explain please. (Because, that's quite surprising to hear, especially from an Admin. Did you include comments on User talks, article talks, edit sums at AfDs and elsewhere? Would it be helpful if I provide diff examples what I'm referring?) If this user's behavior has been "generally within [WP] behavioral guidelines", then really, there's something very big that I do not understand regarding fundamental CIV and the espoused "WP collaborative editing environment". Ihardlythinkso (talk) 07:13, 12 March 2013 (UTC)
- I looked at some of the AfDs, and other comments. There were a few that were clearly over the line, but beyond that, the rest showed a pretty combative editor, who was pushing some tenuous AfD nominations. The problem is that AN/I is only really good at solving the immediate problem, in this case, his disruptive edits regarding sluts and nazis. The rest of the problems are much more subjective. It takes a long road of attempts at conflict resolution before we are generally willing to block editors on the grounds that they are not respecting the collaborative editing environment. As for civility, the community agrees we strive to act civilly, but can rarely agree on where the line for incivil conduct is drawn. IF OGBranniff continues to cause problems, and but refrains from doing anything more that is really directly disruptive, I think an RFC/U would end up being a better venue to make an in depth consideration of OGBranniff's editing. Monty845 13:17, 12 March 2013 (UTC)
- I guess I have some responses. (R1) My first response is, RFC/U has absolutely no teeth. (Or, am I mistaken?) Ihardlythinkso (talk) 07:51, 13 March 2013 (UTC)
- (R2) "As for civility, the community agrees we strive to act civilly, but can rarely agree on where the line for incivil conduct is drawn." I understand that. But this is quite concrete, accusing me of masterbating because I disagreed with him on a policy point: [4]. (No Admin noticed, no Admin commented, no Admin admonished or warned.) Did you see that comment? I'm not willing to call it "subjective" and lost in the concept of definition that is still remaining re civility at WP. It was a slurring comment, and, I'm quite resentful of it. Ihardlythinkso (talk) 08:01, 13 March 2013 (UTC)
- (R3) "It takes a long road of attempts at conflict resolution before we are generally willing to block editors on the grounds that they are not respecting the collaborative editing environment." That really isn't true in my experience, and if you believe that, perhaps it is your own individual view only. My experience was that I was blocked for a day by an Admin, and when I didn't show the proper subservient attitude (i.e. I talked back at him and contested his arguments), he found an excuse to levy an indefinite block, manufacturing a string of policy violations to feed his agenda with me, then proceeded to tighten the screws on my coffin and bury me 6 feet under. (He even erased my access to Email, without justification or cause.) No Admin was willing to do anything about it. (They were all disinclined to compete with him [except Admin AGK, who got my Email access restored], even though I'd received Emails telling me his block of me was bad, and he was not a well-respected Admin.) So your belief in process seems 180 degrees counter to my experience. I nearly quit WP as a result of this experience. Instead after thinking about it, I decided to throw my hat in an Arbcom appeal. I had asked several Admins for help before that last-resort attempt for fairness, and as mentioned, no Admin was willing to offer anything (except Admin AGK, as noted). (Had I been a Malleus, they would have lined up to help me, without my even asking.) Please compare my experience with your statement, then tell me if you think I should feel any different than I do please. Ihardlythinkso (talk) 08:08, 13 March 2013 (UTC)
- (R4) User:OGBranniff registers a string of insulting names without comment from any Admin, including "kid", "lazy", "hypocritical blowhard", "idiot", without provocation from me, without retaliation from me, and without notice, admonish, or warn from any Admin. (Am I supposed to somehow find this acceptable? Can you see why I'm writing you, when you say in an ANI finally brought against him, that you reviewed his edits and found them "within [Wikipedia] behavioral guidelines"? How am I supposed to feel seeing you, an Admin, draw that conclusion at an ANI regarding this user?) Ihardlythinkso (talk) 08:18, 13 March 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you for responses. Ihardlythinkso (talk) 08:20, 13 March 2013 (UTC)
- p.s. An Admin *did* take notice and comment, admonish, and warn, however. Against *me*: After adding this vote/comment at one of the AfDs, an Administrator found it appropriate to issue a warning to me for making a personal attack: [5]. This Administrator also formed some sort of collaborative association with User:OGBranniff for the purpose of supporting further action against me: [6]. Meanwhile, I have never initiated any contact with this Admin, and have repeatedly asked him to leave me alone and stay off my Talk. (I'm wondering if you can possibly see the source of my frustration, and reasons why I've written you, with this upside-down situation re User:OGBranniff!?) Ihardlythinkso (talk) 08:34, 13 March 2013 (UTC)
- p.p.s. Just to be clear, I support your statement at the ANI, "I recommend a clear warning", and a clear warning was issued by Admin Drmies. So I agree with all of that. Ok, Ihardlythinkso (talk) 08:52, 13 March 2013 (UTC)
- Sorry for the delay in responding, to respond to your points in order, (R1) RFC/U can have teeth, if a consensus is actually developed there. The reason I think its often perceived as not having teeth is that we often reserve it for editors who have had a long string of discussions about them at notice boards, and if it hasn't been resolved there, its usually because of an inability to form a consensus. I think in the case of a user like OGBranniff, it may be more effective. (R2) I don't recall specifically seeing that comment, but I don't think it would have substantially changed my position. With regards to the "masterbating" comment, my read of that comment was that it was not accusing you of masterbating per say. Saying someone has a hard on for X is just a locker room or uncivil way of saying they have a fixation on it. Clearly its not civil, and its indicative of a combative mentality, but again, I don't see it rising to the level of an immediately blockable personal attack. (R3) Its unfortunate, but its a grab bag which admin you get, and some are a lot more eager to wield the tools to resolve a dispute then others. I personally view them as a last resort. I wish other admins weren't so quick to block, or revoke talk page access, but its not something that is easy to change. And its true, when a person is block, and they aren't one of the most visible editors, it often doesn't receive as much scrutiny as it deserves, which is exactly why we should be more reluctant to block. I'm not really sure how to fix it though. (R4) Maybe my phrasing was less then ideal, I saw problems with the way OGBranniff was acting, but the conduct was not so far outside the behavioral guidelines that an immediate block, rather then more warnings and discussion was in order. Saying it was within the behavioral guidelines wasn't right, and I'm sorry if it added to your frustration. Monty845 20:23, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
- p.p.s. Just to be clear, I support your statement at the ANI, "I recommend a clear warning", and a clear warning was issued by Admin Drmies. So I agree with all of that. Ok, Ihardlythinkso (talk) 08:52, 13 March 2013 (UTC)
- Here's what he wrote addressed to me:
And you are telling me that this insult is not sex-related?? Or doesn't "have to be" interpreted as sex-based?? Really?? So I shouldn't be offended?? So he can say it again to me and get away the way he got away the first time?? And say to others too?? The slur wasn't directed at you, so, perhaps you can't understand or see it or feel it. But here's a test: How long would I go block-free if I went around the Wikipedia saying that to editors?? How long would I go without an indef-block?? (If I answered any complaints with your: "I'm not accusing you of masterbating per say. What I said only means that in my view you are evidencing a fixation.") How long would anyone buy that??Ooohhh... I know you're probably giving yourself a major hard-on acting like you're all "cool" and "rebel" by being contrarian. Try to enjoy your junior high school years, they are certainly fleeting.
- Here's what he wrote addressed to me:
- (I'm done here. Except that you apologized for saying said user's behavior was "within behavioral guidelines" here, yet, it remains a permanent part of the ANI record, no redaction, nothing stricken. That's just peachy!) I've gotta go. (I'm sure if OGBranniff reads this, he'll be quite amused. That wasn't exactly my intent now, was it.) Ihardlythinkso (talk) 09:46, 16 March 2013 (UTC)
- Monty, you wrote: "Saying someone has a hard on for X is just a locker room or uncivil way of saying they have a fixation on it." All good and dandy. But, that is NOT what User:OGBranniff said. What he did say, was: "you're probably GIVING YOURSELF a major hard-on". (Capitalization, mine.) You changed the language from "giving oneself a hard-on" to "having a hard-on", and changing language changes meaning. So you can't change the language, and then tell me what other language spoken means, when the changed part is germane to the context and therefore the meaning. (I notice at your User page, you have Userbox "This user is a lawyer." I don't know you, and I'm not about to make personal generalizations about you, as that would be stupid. That said, can I ask you ... Are you SURE that your work as attorney, doesn't color your response to me in this thread about what OGBranniff said, without you even being aware of it? [Because, the FEELING I get reading you about this, is consistent with how an attorney thinks, e.g. "My client never said that, and even if he did, the sentence used by my client does not necessarily exclude other meanings that my client intended, and indeed, we so contend." And so on.] Please read this without being offended, but there *is* such a thing as feeling when an attorney is writing/speaking, versus non-attorney, sometimes. Example: "That depends on what the definition of 'is', is." (Bill Clinton). Example: "I'm sorry that what I said was inconsistent with what I knew to be true." (Hilliary Clinton). In other words, she lied. Please don't misunderstand me, I am not accusing you of lying about anything, Monty. But sometimes how attorney's think and the arguments they make, have less to do with the real world and more the world of argumentation & debate, ... do you get me? Thanks for understanding.) Articles you might like to edit, from SuggestBot
We are currently running a study on the effects of adding additional information to SuggestBot's suggestions. Participation in the study is voluntary. Should you wish to not participate in the study, or have questions or concerns, you can find contact information on the SuggestBot study page.
IMPORTANT CHANGES: We have modified the selection of articles SuggestBot suggests and altered the design to incorporate more information about the articles, as described in this explanation.
Note: All columns in this table are sortable, allowing you to rearrange the table so the articles most interesting to you are shown at the top. All images have mouse-over popups with more information.
Changes to SuggestBot's suggestions
We have changed the number of suggested articles and which categories they are selected from. The number of stubs has been greatly reduced, the number of articles needing sources doubled, and two new categories added (orphans and unencyclopaedic articles). We have also modified the layout of the suggestions and added sortable columns with various types of information about each article. The first two columns are:
- Views/Day
- Daily average number of views an article's had over the past 14 days.
- Quality
- Predicted article quality on a 1- to 3-star scale. Placing your cursor over the stars should give you a pop-up describing the article's quality (Low/Medium/High), current assessment class, and predicted assessment class.
The method we use to predict article quality also allows us to assess whether an article might need specific types of work in order to improve its quality. The work needed might not correspond to cleanup tags added to the article, since our method is not based on those. We have added five columns reflecting this work assessment, where a red X indicates improvement is needed. Placing your cursor over an X should give you a pop-up with a short description of the work needed. The five columns seek to answer the following five questions:
- Content
- Is more content needed?
- Headings
- Does this article have an appropriate section structure?
- Images
- Is the number of illustrative images about right?
- Links
- Does this article link to enough other Wikipedia articles?
- Sources
- For its length, is there an appropriate number of citations to sources in this article?
SuggestBot picks articles in a number of ways based on other articles you've edited, including straight text similarity, following wikilinks, and matching your editing patterns against those of other Wikipedians. It tries to recommend only articles that other Wikipedians have marked as needing work. We appreciate that you have signed up to receive suggestions regularly, your contributions make Wikipedia better — thanks for helping!
If you have feedback on how to make SuggestBot better, please let us know on SuggestBot's talk page. Regards from Nettrom (talk), SuggestBot's caretaker. -- SuggestBot (talk) 11:32, 30 May 2013 (UTC)
