Well. I'm sure that that's just a formality since undo would do the same thing anyway. As far as I know rollback should strictly not be used in edit wars only (i.e., if another person would revert that edit and I'd roll it back again). -- Mentisock 22:38, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

Your question

Thanks for you kind suggestion to run for adminship. Unfortunately, from July 14th until August 3rd, I'll be gone on a vacation and I'll mostly spend it in a summer place deep in the backwoods with no Internet access. Then in August I'll start a new job, and I have learnt the hard way that I should avoid mixing wikistress with real life stress. However, I would be very flattered if you would consider asking me again later this year :).--Berig (talk) 17:17, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

Great! Have fun, you too :).--Berig (talk) 19:48, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

Thankyou

Just a little note to say thankyou for participating in my successful RFA candidacy, which passed with 96 supports, 0 opposes, and 1 neutral. I am pleasantly taken aback by the amount of support for me to contribute in an administrative role and look forward to demonstrating that such faith is well placed. Re: my PGP key

Hello - thanks for the message. I went to look at my protection log, and I think I've figured out why I used cascading protection.

I got the mop on June 8, 2007. I protected that page on June 9, 2007. It was the very first page I protected as an admin, because it's the most important page in my user space - my PGP key, which needs to be left alone. One teeny change and my key is completely broken, and I'd have to create a new one with a new set of criteria and I hate to deal with PGP key creation and authentication. I mean, I'm _terrible_ with it. It could take hundreds of years and cost millions of lives. Well, maybe not, but I'm getting a headache just thinking about it.

Anyway, at the time, my second day as a janitor, I hadn't yet figured out what exactly cascading protection was. So, I'm terribly embarrassed to say that, a year later, I probably figured that I should click the cascade button... just in case I needed it.

A couple of weeks later I figured it out, and I was so proud of myself when I did. If you want to look, there are a couple of notes in Carlossuarez46's talk archive about it, because we were new admins at the same time and we were commiserating about how hard it was to learn the ropes.

I removed the cascade from the page today, and I'm grateful you pointed it out. I'll still keep the page protected because I don't want to blow a cerebral aneurysm, but the templates on the page are once again free to roam and breathe free. Thanks again, very much, for letting me know about it. :-) KrakatoaKatie 22:05, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

And thank you, for not laughing too loudly. At least not to my face. ;-) See ya - KrakatoaKatie 22:17, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

RfAHide

If you can find the syntax, I will do this for you.  Asenine  14:52, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

The RfAHide width changing is easy enough: see User:Ais523/Asenine/RfAhide.
As for floating a div, try something like this (edit this section to see the code):
I've put 5 versions of RfAhide there; the floats will move them around so that they stay 350px wide and as many as possible are placed across the screen.
I don't have an answer to your third question right now though; I don't have a copy of IE7 to test on handy, and it tends to be a bit flaky when it comes to markup. Sorry about that, maybe I'll have more time later to check. --ais523 21:34, 12 September 2008 (UTC)

Hi Mentisock. Just stopping by to let you know I declined your speedy-tagging of this article, as the band does appear to be notable, based on a glance of a search at Google News archives. List/s

I noticed you've been changing list articles to the plural. Do you plan to change all these then? MOS is ambiguous, so how do you distinguish, I wonder? -- Mentisock 10:08, 29 October 2008 (UTC)

I only changed titles of articles that include multiple lists in them - each section is a distinct list (that will eventually be split off). Semantically speaking "Lists of" may refer to a list of lists, or to a page that is itself a collection of lists. I figure as long as the title fits, the title is fine. But I was planning on letting those sit for awhile to give the community time to comment before I rename any more.
Speaking of which, while we're on the subject, do you think "Lists of" should refer to lists of lists, or collections of lists, or both?
The Transhumanist    21:29, 29 October 2008 (UTC)
I don't get the difference. At the beginning why did people just call each article a list? What's different between List of Spaniards and Lists of Andorrans? Technically the former is a list (or multiple sectioned lists, depending on how you see it) with Spanish people which is further categorized according to profession. But if we're going to write about monkeys the article will only be called 'monkey'... that's a similar sort of situation. Essentially lists will always contain a lot of different types of objects anyway, so could you ever have a strictly singular list by that definition? -- Mentisock 15:23, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
Most lists start out as single lists. There are thousands of single lists on Wikipedia, hundreds that are merely alphabetized, and there are even singular lists with non-alphabetized sections (one per item on the list). See List of Afghans, List of half marathon races, List of Iceland-related articles, List of major automobile races in Italy, List of years in Singapore, and List of zero terms (one heading per item) as examples. Random quote

(first 2 paragraphs copied from Village Pump technical page re. meta:IRC channel quotes fortune cookie)

Could a random quote be generated on any WM project page somehow? -- Mentisock 14:32, 6 November 2008 (UTC)

Template:Random portal component says it was made for portals, but I don't see why it can't be used elsewhere. It picks a quote based on the day of the year. Template:Randomquote is another, but it isn't too user friendly, and has no documentation. It picks a quote based on the user's number of edits. It should be possible to modify the latter with a truly random number; you might look here for guidance. --A Knight Who Says Ni (talk) 12:09, 7 November 2008 (UTC)
I thought {{Randomquote}} was purely random out of the fifty quotes it has and nothing more. Besides, could it work with quotes on another page? (Since I'd like meta:IRC channel quotes - do they even support interwiki feeds?) -- Mentisock 15:20, 7 November 2008 (UTC)
When I went into Randomquote's page, I kept getting the same quote. Then I looked at the code, and saw it was using number of edits as its random number seed. The "random" template uses part of a time of day lookup as its seed. If you want more randomness, you could use a combination of the two. I wouldn't expect you to be able to use "interwiki feeds"; there is no such thing; links to other Wiki sites are just normal external links, and probably can't (and shouldn't) be used this way.
I said that Randomquote was not user friendly, and I was especially thinking of how all its quotes are inside the template. So you would need to make your own version of this template under a new name, probably as part of your userspace, and edit it whenever you want to add a quote. You should be able to change it to use as many quotes as you like.
I'm guessing Random Portal Component is a lot closer to the IRC channel quote. It takes its quotes from a sub-page. By the way, I have no experience with these templates. You asked, and I did a search and found these two, plus the note about a couple of methods of random number generation. You'll just have to create some sandbox pages and try them out. --A Knight Who Says Ni (talk) 16:52, 7 November 2008 (UTC)

The RfA Barnstar
Mentisock, I would like to thank you for your participation in my recent Request for Adminship, which passed with 112 supports, 4 opposes and 5 neutrals. A special mention goes out to Stwalkerster and Pedro for nominating me, thanks a lot for having trust in me! In response to the neutrals, I will try to double check articles that have been tagged for speedy deletion before I CSD them and will start off slowly with the drama boards of ANI and AN to ensure that I get used to them. In response to the oppose !votes on my RfA, I will check that any images I use meet the non-free content criteria and will attempt to handle any disputes or queries as well as I can. If you need my help at all, feel free to simply ask at my talk page and I'll see if I can help. Once again, thank you for your participation, and have a great day! :) The Helpful One 22:07, 25 November 2008 (UTC)

Question/Request for help

You edited my sandbox to remove <noinclude> tags around a category. Another user also reverted an edit of mine recently where I did something similar with <noinclude> in the article namespace (I asked him about it as well but got no reply). Basically, my understanding of these tags is a little confuddled.

  • The general idea I'm getting now is that they serve absolutely no function outside of templates and pages being transcluded.
  • However the impression I previously had was that <noinclude> could be used to "untransclude" categorisation (i.e. to insert a category TAG without the page getting categorised). The reason I thought this, is that I saw somewhere (can't remember or find where) where a UserBox had been surrounded by <noinclude> to prevent that user being categorised (as the UBX template had a category tag in it. This works for userboxes I have found, so why exactly it shouldn't work/be allowed for other uses is what's confused me. Any help/clarifications you could offer would be greatly appreciated.

Btw, I was experimenting in an attempt to figure this out myself - hence the <noinclude> in my sandbox. olucideer 14:04, 20 December 2008 (UTC)

The tag does indeed not categorize a page when it surrounds a category - the transcluded version though. It could also contain text or anything which you don't want to be actually transcluded (as an example, they use it to not include /doc pages even though they appear on the template page itself). The tag is usually placed around template-specific categories... the categories that shouldn't be attached to another page when transcluded (because the other page isn't a template most likely). That was why I removed the category from your sandbox... Category:Wikipedia-related user templates (and a colon before the namespace is also a way of just linking a category) is used to categorize user templates... which aren't necessarily user pages. In most cases people substitute a template and not remove the template-specific categories - noinclude in that case doesn't do much since it's likely the page (your sandbox, in this case) wouldn't be transcluded elsewhere.
includeonly also complements noinclude which does the opposite: hides the content it surrounds on the current page and only displays it when transcluded.
I hope this clears the confusion. -- Mentisock 10:16, 22 December 2008 (UTC)
Thank you for a detailed explanation. Very clear, although to be honest I did actually know and understand pretty much all you've said before. The reason for my confusion is a little different. The <noinclude> in my sandbox was simply an experiment, an attempt to "see what happens when I do this" to give myself a better understanding of the mechanics of it. Basically if I do this:
<noinclude>{{User:Someone/UBX}}</noinclude>
in a userpage, any categorisation that userbox performs (i.e. categorisation of users as opposed to the template-specific categories you mention above) won't happen. My confusion was that when I did:
<noinclude>{{Template:template that categorises a page}}</noinclude>
on the talk page of an article (I was trying to demonstrate the template to someone in a discussion without actually categorising the talk-page), a user removed it saying I had mis-categorised the talk page. So why does it work for one instance and not the other? olucideer 18:00, 22 December 2008 (UTC)

Either of those won't work like that because noinclude only prevents categorization if the template/userbox is transcluded... e.g., you put <noinclude>[[Category:Wikipedia-related user templates]]</noinclude> on Template:User adminstandards for example... you do categorize that template, but you won't insert any other page you transclude that template on in the category. So you can successfully categorize the template for template sorting purposes without disrupting userpages with an irrelevant category (and make the category useless in turn, since most of the pages wouldn't be appropriate).
If you put <noinclude>{{User:Someone/UBX}}</noinclude> on a userpage it will be mostly useless and won't work as you intended because noinclude is only for transcluded pages... i.e., if you transclude that page the other page won't even have the userbox at all (since it hides whatever it surrounds, not just categories... no, there's no efficient way of manipulating categories like that, save from substituting the template and removing the category yourself). It didn't work on the talk page for the same reason... you'd need to use includeonly but that will still be devoid of function. -- Mentisock 10:35, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

Spammy articles

What's the point of articles like this one? I noticed there are some others on your stubs page that are spammy in tone as well. Usually similar articles are CSD tagged but since you regularly edit I thought to ask you first. -- Mentisock 17:44, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

The whole point of personal stubs - it is NOT an article until published - is to collect various pieces of data together for editing, to create a new article of the required depth and conformity to wikipedia standards, before it is published. During that construction phase, as a personal stub, you can't delete it because it is not published - and at some stages during construction it might look "spammy." I hope you now understand the difference between an article and stub! Rgds, - Trident13 (talk) 17:59, 13 January 2009 (UTC)
Actually APNC is a pretty long article and seems complete (from PR's perspective) so I didn't think it was a stub. Still, there's no need to sound spammy when building articles and usually user pages that advertise are still deleted like articles in mainspace otherwise companies can use the loophole to spam. -- Mentisock 18:10, 13 January 2009 (UTC)
It's easier to remove the cat's than anything else! I find stubs useful for collecting data on subjects which may/not pass WP:NOTAB, but are not of a standard for main space - something I find may make it clearer of their notability. Have not yet seen in my nearly three years here one of my stubs used as a spam point - although I can see the opportunity. I think its more likely from experience that companies create spammy articles in the main space, or more likely add to good basic and factual articles with whole detailed lists of products. Look after yourself! Best Regards, --Trident13 (talk) 18:17, 13 January 2009 (UTC)
What's 'cat's'? In all reality though, the APNC article seems more like a copy-and-paste (in which case it could also qualify as a copyvio, but the URL is down). And surely you're talking about 'stubs' loosely here - most of the articles are years old as well so it's not like they're being actively 'worked' on. Can we try an MfD at least to see what other people think? -- Mentisock 09:12, 14 January 2009 (UTC)
I honestly don't know what your point is! First you are suggesting its fit for production, now its suitable for deletion??? Personal stub pages are personal sandboxes - places for creating. If your issue is that I have not progressed the pages as quickly as you desire, then please note they are my stub pages/my sandbox - I am still not sure if there is an article in that subject, and if so don't believe they are of the required quality. Can I strongly suggest you read Wikipedia:User_page and specifically the section on how you can use such pages. If your point is that it can't make an article, then why not say that in the first place? I am happy to do that, but you seem at present to speak with little purpose and wholly in rhymes. Rgds, --Trident13 (talk) 11:30, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

Haha, yeah. When you're just skimming through edits you end up semi-analyzing them and since it was a semi-mistake I ended up making one as well. Annoying to have two edits for such a minor correction. -- Mentisock 10:19, 15 January 2009 (UTC)
