[edit]I just wanted to say thanks for removing Association for Managers in Students' Unions from the 'speedy deletion' category. Someone put it up for deletion within about five minutes of the article being created and I was a little disappointed.
Thank you!

Singapore review
[edit]I'll have a look at it when I have a large block of time, but it may not be for a couple of weeks. I'm in the process of moving back to Singapore from the US, and with a lot of running about, plus dealing with wikiadmin stuff (and my main obssession the Doctor Who pages), that doesn't give me a whole lot of attention to spread around. But I'll take a look when I can. --khaosworks 18:08, Jun 5, 2005 (UTC)

Singapore review
[edit]As I have promised here's my review: =Sections=
- Infobox = no probs
- Lead = no probs
- History = no probs
- Geography = would like to see the extreme temperatures (I think 19C & 38.9 are the extremes); would also like to know the average rainfall.
- Economy = industries that employ the most Singapore residents?
- Demographics = Breakup % by religion? Literacy? Life expectancy? Sex ratio?
- Culture = should be shortened
- Rankings = strongly feel that it should not be on this page
=References=
- Inline references are incorrect, please format it according to Wikipedia:footnote3 style
- All figures (any numbers; facts figures) should have this style of referencing to know where you have referenced it from. I've referenced all figures used on the Mumbai and India page; please see that the same is carried out here.
- No media section; newspapers, television and radio stations. I want this section.
- Shrink the size of the images
- Singapore follows British English style; Transportation is thus incorrect, transport is correct. Please correct this.
- The final image should be promoted up.

Singapore review
[edit]
- "The legislative branch of government is the Parliament" is the only information about the parliament (parliament links to the general article on parliaments and not on Parliament of Singapore, which redirects to politics of Singapore). I'd like to know a few more things about the legislative branch. How powerful is it? Where does it meet, and how often? How many MPs? What parties are represented, and what are their relative representations? A nice graph related to this would help. Also, I'd suggest splitting off part of the "politics and government" section and creating a "human rights" section.
- Before I'd support I'd need to see seval new sections (besides the human rights one noted above):
- Military (branches, commanders, active/reserve strenghth, current hardware)
- Communications (what percent of people have computer/Internet access? Cable TV?)
- Education
- Flora and fauna (common species, endangered species, fish species—is fishing a big industry?)
- Foreign relations (needs to cover Malaysia, ROC, PRC, Australia, Malaysia, Indonesia, India, the U.S., and the UK)
- Media (Newspapers, TV, radio. Mention the Straits Times and the government's control of the media)
- Demographics—not bad, but sources (in note format) and a nice pie graph or two would help.
- What is the situation of women in Singapore? There's a good bit on ethnic relations, but what about gender relations?
- Figures need to be provided in both metric and standard units.
- In some parts the language seems to be boosteristic.
- By the way, you have a great userpage!
- Warmest regards --Neutralitytalk 14:01, Jun 6, 2005 (UTC)
Dean Hill Motors speedy delete
[edit]Hi Daniel, just following up with the speedy delete request. This page, in my opinion, is of great historical value to the residents of the upper valley region of New Hampshire and should not be subject to deletion. If there is any content in my post that you feel is inappropriate, I would invite you to please let me know, thanks.
Carl Levine
- Mr. Levine,
- I have a user page, you can leave the comment there although it really should be on the VfD page (follow the link in the template). It is not up for speedy deletion ... I wanted to give someone the chance to defend it.
- Although, I'm not impressed. The existing text doesn't make the case for great historical value. Please, once again, if you wish to have this debate do it under Votes for Deletion, where it's supposed to be.

Singapore review
[edit]Hi Mailer,
Before I start, I have to comment that you deserve a pat on the back for the effort you are putting in for the Singapore article - job well done! :)
With regards to the comments by Nichalp and Neutrality above, just want to add a few comments:
- Nichalp has given some excellent comments, very constructive and "actionable" (no suprise since he is actively involved in Wikipedia:WikiProject Countries).
- The point on inline references might not be entirely correct. Wikipedia:footnote3 is just one of the many options and it is noted in Wikipedia:Cite_sources that "it is far more important to have citations than to worry about whether a footnote or an author-year format is used".
- The point on having a section on media does not conform to guidelines set out in Wikipedia:WikiProject_Countries. Yes, I agree that articles do not have to strictly follow the format given in Wikipedia:WikiProject_Countries. However, it is stated clearly in the featured article criteria that "a featured article should comply with the standards set in the style manual, as well as relevant WikiProjects". This will be a major sticky point during the FAC period; there will be some who insist on following the Wikipedia:WikiProject_Countries, there will be others who insist on having a separate sections. This was the case in previous FACs and it will continue to be.
- Ditto point 3 for points on human rights, military, communications, education, flora & fauna and foreign relations by Neutrality.
I tend to favour following the guidelines laid out in Wikipedia:WikiProject Countries. It is, after all, a result of consensus among the community. In the event that objections are listed during the FAC period, at least this would be a strong and valid reason. Perhaps other FAs on countries might be useful references as well. In any case, the main Singapore article should just be a summary of the main articles listed (but I guess its hard to get people to edit the main articles; most just look at the main article and edit straight away).
Hope I didn't confuse you with my ramblings! Just thought that it would be easier for everyone if most of the main contributors have a common understanding of the goals/targets for the FAC. Cheers! =Travisyoung= 12:52, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Request for advice/mediation
[edit]Hi Mailer,
Some misunderstanding has arose between me and Huaiwei and I put it down to miscommunication between the two of us. I would like to request you to mediate so as to avoid any potential conflict with Huaiwei.
It started off from Template:Politics of Singapore, where "Government departments" was linked to Government of Singapore. I based my definition of "government" on this: "In British English, the word "Government" can also be used to refer only to the executive branch, in this context being a synonym for the word "administration" in American English (e.g. the Blair Government, the Bush Administration). In countries using the Westminster system the Government (or party in Government) will also useually control the legislature" (obtained from the article government). From what I understood of government (in the English/Singaporean context), it is synonymous with "cabinet". Therefore I took the liberty of re-directing Government of Singapore to Cabinet of Singapore.
This created some misunderstanding between me and Huaiwei, as shown in Talk:Government of Singapore and Talk:Departments of the Singapore Government. It seems to me the root of the problem was that both of us had a different understanding of the word "government". In any case, I think that "Government departments" in Template:Politics of Singapore should really just be talking about ministries, statutory boards and non-ministerial agencies such as the Elections Department and Singapore Department of Statistics, and not be directed to Government of Singapore, which I took to mean the cabinet of Singapore.
I appreciate your help in this matter. Many thanks in advance! =Travisyoung= 16:28, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Hi Mailer,
I have mentioned the reasons for re-directing the article Government of Singapore to Cabinet of Singapore, and the subsequent creation of the new article Departments of the Singapore Government countless of times. However, it seems to me that some recalcitrant contributors have refused to look at how each event has led to another, resulting in this misunderstanding. I would like to re-iterate my point: I strongly believe this is a result of a small misunderstanding. I hope the following "timeline" in bullet form will help you in understanding what went wrong.
- From my edits in Politics of Singapore, I assumed that the definition of "government" was: "In British English, the word "Government" can also be used to refer only to the executive branch, in this context being a synonym for the word "administration" in American English (e.g. the Blair Government, the Bush Administration). In countries using the Westminster system the Government (or party in Government) will also usually control the legislature" (obtained from Wikipedia article Government).
- Natalinasmpf mentioned in Talk:Government of Singapore that the amount of information in Government of Singapore was small. I explained that there might be some misunderstanding.
- Vsion did an excellent revamp of Template:Politics of Singapore, which I believed, at that point in time, was modelled on Template:PoliticsUK (this was later clarified to be true in Talk:Departments of the Singapore Government by Vsion).
- In the template, "Government departments" was linked to Government of Singapore. From point 1 above, because I took the definition of "government" to be "cabinet" and "Government departments" was a sub-list under the item "Cabinet" in the template, I assumed that Vsion might have overlooked this link and meant for "Government departments" to link to an article somewhat similar to Departments of the United Kingdom Government.
- Hence, I created a new article Departments of the Singapore Government, and changed the link of "Government departments" in Template:Politics of Singapore to Departments of the Singapore Government.
- Consequently, because of point 1 above, I also re-directed Government of Singapore to Cabinet of Singapore.
I hope that this is clear enough that it was an honest mistake. I do not appreciate Huaiwei's accusing and condescending tones in all of his replies. One of the behaviour guidelines in Wikipedia is to assume good faith, which was not apparent in all of his replies to me on both Talk:Government of Singapore and Talk:Departments of the Singapore Government.
Vsion has provided a clarification on Talk:Departments of the Singapore Government. Huaiwei still does not seem to understand that this was an honest mistake and his last reply on Talk:Departments of the Singapore Government was accusatory and condescending in tone. Huaiwei and I had a somewhat similar miscommunication before, shown in User talk:Huaiwei#Republic of Singapore Navy naval bases. I don't know if it is because I am too difficult to understand, or if he is just being recalcitrant, but I hope that this matter is settled amicably. Hope this helps. =Travisyoung= 08:22, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hi. I thought two dab lines in the header is ugly so I removed the first one and added the corporation entry in the dab page. I'm not sure if you mean the MTR Corporation would also be a popular target -- if so, would you agree that making that link in the third paragraph bold might look better? -- Alassius (talk) 15:41, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Well, it's not like there was a debate is it? I do think duplicates without a good reason look unprofessional and should be avoided. Would you object if I remove the narrower entry again? -- Alassius (talk) 17:42, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit]I came across a vanity page for Marko Alaupovic and started the deletion process. However, once I went to edit its Votes for Deletion page, I noticed that it recently went through a round of VfD (and lost). It appears the page was added again to Wikipedia. [edit]Thanks for the tip on signing talk messages, Mailer diablo. Can I ask where you encountered my contributions? Since you're from Singapore, I should ask, Ni hui shuo hanyu? I hung out at Changi last year on my way to Fudan University. What a cool airline Singapore has.
Regarding your stated intention to study computer science at University, can I suggest that you self-study programming and use traditional education for liberal arts? The suggestion has nothing to do with you particular situation, just with my opinion about what works best. The OCW site, for example, has some excellent programming resources. Hi there Mailer diablo! Long time no see. I've got a problem with an anon user on the Anne Rice article. It seems like he's trying to act like he's a serious contributor, but in reality, he's just another vandalism case. One of many preposterous things he's claiming, is that he has emailed Anne Rice herself, and that she's going to deal with the issue on Wikipedia. You can follow the edit history of the article, and the edit history of the talk page to check up the IP adress. He is using various IPs, but they're all very similar. In my opinion, he's just adding nonsense. This user claims to have a registered account, so he will be able to login and make more coherent posts anyway, even if you ban him. It's getting really annoying, and wasting my time. Thanks! EliasAlucard|Talk 21:35, 26 Jul, 2005 (UTC)

Anne Rice Part Two
[edit]Dear Mailer diablo, there must be five to eight people who have witnessed one goofy revert war after another on this page. The vandal in question is me. However I am no vandal. I opted with some other users to try and fix an Anne Rice article. Elias took dramatic offence that I did not log on. My point was that each person has a right here. Logged in or not. Period. I have now made Angela very aware of this and they know me by name, telephone number etc. etc. ...any doubt contact them. I'm rushing but I do want to make this point. Elias has taken this to death com 5. Refer to the history page on both the article and the history page on the Anne Rice talk page. See the notes ...see the logic (in this case the lack of any) ...this was meant to be a simple revision and not the usual politics about ego's. The man (boy?) is like a dog that bites in and does not let go. The threats on his part though I will bring to your attention. See the current standard talk page over this compulsive set of verbal abuses. Again there is no vandalism, again refer to your highest source if in doubt, Angela. Had a minute, glad I saw this, hope I cleared it up. C. M. (should help you with knowing who I am ...I have a new reason not to log in ...again see Elias's threat on the talk page of this article in question. Well I earned no great wiki points for the 100 edits on Anne Rice but Elias at least got his numbers up (some care about quality ...others care about wars and numbers ...think you can find out quickly who wants what around here). Be well and cheers! Just wanted to add a p.s. and say I'll leave a reply email and account in a bit for you, you seem decent enough but I trust again you understand my lack of desire and taste for any further crap here now.
Someone hacked my internet account and used my now "not in use" sockpuppet.I hope you will understand and close this case of sockpuppet hijacking vandalism.Thank you!Tdxiang 07:03, 29 July 2005 (UTC)
Star Cruises
[edit]Hi, just wondering, if you have the time, to review and comment on the Star Cruises page, where User:Instantnood attempted to "claim ownership" of it as a HK company when we know quite well that is has all along been stoutly Malaysian? :D--Huaiwei 05:52, 31 July 2005 (UTC)
- Sorry to interrupt.. to repeat what I have said at talk:Star Cruises, I did not "claim ownership" as Huaiwei suggested. I added back what was removed unexplained by Huaiwei in his marked "expand". Travisyoung have found out on the company website that it has its corporate headquarters in Hong Kong, and rephrased that sentence accordingly. — Instantnood 09:39, July 31, 2005 (UTC)
- The issue is not whether Instantnood "added back" anything. The issue is he originally added information which would clearly misinform ignorant readers, particularly with regards to the company's ownership and operational hubs. I have already responded to Travisyoung's research with my own. Meanwhile, it seems like Instantnood thinks its not his business to do any of his own research as well.--Huaiwei 09:59, 31 July 2005 (UTC)
- I was not the one who "originally added" that piece of information, and I myself was clearly misinformed as well. Contributions to Wikipedia is not and should not only be meaning research. Maintainance is also important to Wikipedia. — Instantnood 10:29, July 31, 2005 (UTC)
- I am absolutely astounded. Wikipedia content MUST be a product of research, an extremely basic expection all wikipedians are expected to follow. You have clearly failed to verify your content before adding them to this page, and it now brings me to wonder just how much "research" you do for the rest of your edits. What do you mean by "maintainance"? I do not think "maintainance" amounts to adding erroneous information?--Huaiwei 11:05, 31 July 2005 (UTC)
