ArbCom 2021 Elections voter message

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. Ireland/ROI
After my revert, I had a gander at MOS:LINK to see if there's been any past discussions on the issue and found WP:IRE-IRL, which says, Per the Linking guideline of the Manual of Style, the names of major geographic features and locations should not be linked. If it is thought necessary to link, in order to establish context or for any other reason, the name of the state should be pipelinked as [[Republic of Ireland|Ireland]].)
In regards to place of birth, Ireland unambiguously refers to the state. – 2.O.Boxing 23:50, 26 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Squared.Circle.Boxing: Unfortunately it does not refer unambiguously to the state as the many arguements over the naming of the articles Republic of Ireland and Ireland shows. It causes clear and obvious confusion especially outside of the island where people are very ignorant of the nuances on terminology and the facts on the ground. Even people like Ian Wright, the ex-Arsenal striker, are very confused and ignorant ot the nuances considering on the recent World Cup Qualifier highlights on ITV he kept referring to Northern Ireland as Ireland and its players as Irish, which is as wrong as saying that he is an African simply because he is black. - I struggle to see how, in regards to a location where the format is town/city/county/country, that somebody could mistake the state for the island. If somebody thinks that "Dublin, Ireland" refers to the island and not the state then they probably shouldn't be reading the big boy Wikipedia. As for people outside the island; I think it's a safe bet that a lot don't even realise that ROI and NI are on an island called Ireland, and only know Ireland as a country.

- You clearly don't venture into Irish topics often if you fail to see the common confusion. Wright is wrong however as the majority people in NI don't identify as Irish regardless of a foreign states law. Mabuska (talk) 19:29, 29 November 2021 (UTC)
