ARV thanks and a minor bug

[edit]

First off, thanks for the excellent ARV tool. Extremely handy. Unfortunately, today I ran into a minor bug as seen here. [1] I was trying to note that I had already blatantvandal warned an account. I had mistakeningly thought that ARV would escape out the template syntax. Perhaps it needs to escape out commands? -- Gogo Dodo 00:20, 20 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Found another possible bug. This vandal got reported multiple times at once [2] [3] [4]. My report with ARV came in second, but ARV didn't notice the first report nor the bot report. -- Gogo Dodo 04:42, 25 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Happened again. First report and my report. Could it be that other report is using the IPVandal template? Looking over the code, it looks like ARV looks for only '{{vandal|' + vandal + '}}', when it should be doing a regular expression search like '/{{(?:IP)?vandal|' + vandal + '}}/i'? My JavaScript is a little rusty. -- Gogo Dodo 05:18, 26 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

LDBot

[edit]

Thanks for taking care of LDBot :) He'll be back Sunday to resume his duties.

PS: Your username change confused the hell out of me! --lightdarkness (talk) 15:02, 26 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry; I didn't mean to emulate your signature. -- tariqabjotu (joturner) 15:29, 26 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe I subconsciously knew your signature looked like this when I created it. -- tariqabjotu (joturner) 15:30, 26 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

LDBot question - deletion log page

[edit]

I'm not sure if suggestions for this bot ought to be made here or on the LDBot talk page, or if the LDBot even generates the message I'm about to refer to, but I've decided to ask here. I noticed lately that a lot of AfD nominations are ending up at the top of the list, instead of at the bottom. I know in a lot of places it says to add new nominations to the bottom, but this request is often not heeded (or seen, purhaps). One place it might be useful is the editing page for the Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Log. When someone opens the link to the editing page for the deletion log, one will see <!-- Add new entries below this line -->. Purhaps a more useful message would be <!-- Add new entries at the bottom of the list below this line -->, or something to that effect. Thanks for your thoughts on this. Agent 86 01:49, 1 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'd suggest that the line be changed to <-- Add new entries to the bottom of this page --> Kimchi.sg 14:09, 3 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

LDBOT page error

[edit]

There's a system variable, CURRENTMONTHNAMEGEN, that LDBot uses in the Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/current page. For some reason, starting about three days ago, that variable now returns <august-gen> instead of August, creating bad page links. I've fixed this in a number of places, by replacing with CURRENTMONTHNAME, which works fine. I've fixed this page, but when the day rolls over in 11 hours, it will need fixing again. Can you fix the source LDBot uses here? (And while you're at it, I endorse Kinchi's suggestion. Currently we have newbies adding at the top, more experienced editors at the bottom, so placement ends up quite random.) Fan-1967 13:02, 6 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

ARV

[edit]

Hi, I don't know if you're already aware of this, but when I use your script to report IPs, it uses the {{vandal}} template instead of the {{IPvandal}} one. Just thought you'd like to know; and if you get this all the time, sorry. —JD[don't talk|email] 22:25, 6 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, for some reason, the two edit counters don't match up on their output. I ran the two counts simultaneously, I didn't make any edits while both were running, and they keep giving different results. I've double-checked everything that I could, and the "duplicate edits" functions of Flcelloguy's Tool are matching everything appropriately... since they were double-checked with Interiot's Tool3 back when it was online, I have to imagine that Essjay's counter has a bug... especially since I'm completely sure I've made exactly 17 edits to the Portal talk: namespace. Just telling you, so you can check your code... (by the way, the editcounts have been inflated to take into account this edit, if that helps.) Titoxd(?!?) 06:19, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

change the text near the top of WP:AFD?

[edit]

hello. the text in the "Current discussions" section should be changed. imo there should not be an "add a new entry" link, but a pointer to the section below "how to list pages for deletion". if you just click the "add a new entry" link and do the obvious thing (copy/paste the last line to make a new line), the results are *not* what you expect; instead of a new entry in e.g. [5] you just get a broken link. i tried clicking on the link and filling some text in, but that didn't work either -- only when i found the section on the three-step process did things work. i'm not the first to make this mistake; i saw that a couple of others had done the same and gotten the same weirdness on the [6] page. Benwing 07:51, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

even better would be something like the "wizards" in ms windows, i.e. a link that takes you to a series of pages that automatically steps through the process, rather than requiring you to manually follow all the steps; otherwise it's too easy (esp. for newbies!) to fuck this process up. Benwing 07:55, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

BTW you won't see the breakage i mentioned above, because it got fixed a few minutes later by the respective people who followed the wrong process; so i suspect the same mistakes i made are being made over and over by others, and then fixed over and over again the same way i ultimately figured things out. ARV and anon vandals

[edit]

I've seen more than a few edit summaries with ARV attached -- looks like a wonderful idea, I'll have to look into trying it. I do have one minor idea for improving it: is there a way for it to distinguish between named and IP vandals, and then use the {{IPvandal}} template as appropriate? Just a thought; my coding ability is about nil. :) Luna Santin 23:13, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cleanup of HSM Article

[edit]

lightdarkness,

Concerning Cleanup of the High School Musical

Until you are able to specify exactly what needs to be fixed, the article will remain without a cleanup tag. I believe it is within Wikipedia's quality standards. That you stated the sections are to long and unnecessary is not a help. Please clarify your statements in the talk page (or my talk page) before adding the tag again.

Thank you,

ARV fixes

[edit]

I've been contacting Voice of All for some fixes to the rollback/etc. scripts, and he told me that you wrote ARV and the little report tag. Is there a way to make it so usernames with spaces in them are given underscores instead of pluses and is there a way to write the script as so IP editors are tagged with {{IPvandal}} when reported and not {{vandal}}? Ryūlóng 07:47, 8 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Are you sure the {{IPvandal}} was added? I just reported an IP and it used {{vandal}}. Ryūlóng 21:44, 8 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

About ARV

[edit]

Hi Lightdarkness! I was looking at your tool, it looks really cool! I was wondering, why are you getting the username from the url? Why not from document.title? This below:

var fulltitle = document.title.split(" - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia");
var articletitle = fulltitle[0];

will get you the title of the page stored in the variable articletitle. Then you could just remove the "User talk:" from the beginning of the string and you'd be set. What do you think? —Mets501 (If responding, please do so on my talk page) 21:28, 10 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sure thing, I'll leave the comments here on your talk page. By the way, the tool is in javascript, so adding {{subst:js|User:AndyZ/peerreviewer.js}} to your monobook.js will allow you to do the same.

  • Please expand the lead to conform with guidelines at WP:LEAD. The article should have an appropriate number of paragraphs as is shown on WP:LEAD, and should adequately summarize the article.[1]
  • Per WP:WIAFA, Images should have concise captions.[2]
  • Per WP:CONTEXT and WP:BTW, years with full dates should be linked; for example, link January 15, 2006, but do not link January 2006.[3]
  • As per WP:MOS, please do not link words in headings.
  • Per WP:WIAFA, this article's table of contents (ToC) maybe too long- consider shrinking it down by merging short sections or using a proper system of daughter pages as per WP:SS.[4]
  • There are a few occurrences of weasel words in this article- please observe WP:AWT. Certain phrases should specify exactly who supports, considers, believes, etc., such a view. For example,
    • is considered
    • might be weasel words, and should be provided with proper citations (if they already do, or are not weasel terms, please strike this comment).[5]
  • Watch for redundancies that make the article too wordy instead of being crisp and concise. (You may wish to try Tony1's redundancy exercises.)
    • Vague terms of size often are unnecessary and redundant - “some”, “a variety/number/majority of”, “several”, “a few”, “many”, “any”, and “all”. For example, “All pigs are pink, so we thought of a number of ways to turn them green.”
  • This article needs footnotes, preferably in the cite.php format recommended by WP:WIAFA. Simply, enclose inline citations, with WP:CITE or WP:CITE/ES information, with <ref>THE FOOTNOTE</ref>. At the bottom of the article, in a section named “References” or “Footnotes”, add <div class="references-small"><references/></div>.[6]
  • The article will need references. See WP:CITE and WP:V for more information.
  • Please ensure that the article has gone through a thorough copyediting so that the it exemplifies some of Wikipedia's best work. See also User:Tony1/How to satisfy Criterion 2a. [7]

August Esperanza Newsletter

[edit]
Program Feature: To-Do List
The Esperanza To-Do List is a place where you may list any request, big or small, for assistance. If you need help with archiving your usertalk, for example, all you need to do is list it here and somebody will help you out. Likewise, if you need help with some area of editing on Wikipedia, list it here! Again, any matter, trivial or not, can be placed on this page. However, all matters listed on this page must not be of an argumentative nature. You do not need to be a member of Esperanza (or this program) to place or fulfill requests on this page. If you don't have any requests, consider coming by and fulfilling a few! This program has not been very active, but has lots of potential!
What's New?
In order to help proposed programs become specific enough to make into full-fledged programs, the In development section of the proposals page has been created. Proposals that are promising, but need to be organized in more detail are listed here. Please take a look at what is there, and help the proposals turn into programs.
To improve both the layout and text of the front page, in an attempt to clarify the image of Esperanza, the front page is going to have some redesigning take place. Please take your creative minds to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Front page redesign to brainstorm good ideas.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. In order to make sure all users who join Esperanza are welcomed, a list of volunteers who are willing to welcome new Esperanzians is at Wikipedia:Esperanza/Members#Esperanza_welcomers. Please add yourself if you are interested; we want to make sure all new Esperanza members are welcomed!
  2. The In development section of the proposals page has been created.
  3. Proposals page: Some proposals have been moved to the aforementioned "In development" section, some have been left as a proposal, and others have been archived. For those proposals that were a good idea but didn't necessarily constitute a program, General Esperanzial Actions has been created.
  4. Two small pieces of charter reform will be decided on in a straw poll at Wikipedia talk:Esperanza/Governance. One involves filling the position of any councillors who may leave, the other involves reforming the charter.
  5. Until cooperation with the Kindness Campaign is better defined, it remains as a proposed program.
  6. There is a page for discussing the front page redesign.
Signed...
Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may add yourself to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Newsletter/Opt Out List.

ARV 2.1 bug

[edit]

First, let me say that ARV is an awesome tool and vandalism-fighting wouldn't be the same w/o it. But here's the bug: it seems to be accepting (or did this once) redundant reports for an IP vandal. I don't know the Java-wizardry to fix it, but I figured I'd bring it to your attention. Thanks!--Kchase T 05:51, 15 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I concur on this, repeatly duplicates reports now. The betaish version didn't seem to do this. See this diff for an example of duplication. Kevin_b_er 04:03, 16 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

It gives IP reports this edit summary (Reporting 203.221.209.213?action=edit using ARV 2.1.) and they appear like this on WP:AIV--1568 01:57, 16 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In the Essjay edit counter ( http://tools.wikimedia.de/~essjay/edit_count/Count.php ) will it be possible to add edits/day. ie, Total number of edits / number of days since the very first edit ? Tintin (talk) 06:41, 16 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi LD, if you haven't seen it in the talk page, there is a problem with the number of pages (or rather, their total size) transcluded in the page; see Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#New template limits, Special:ExpandTemplates for more details. Since you are the one who redesigned the page, I thought you may be interested in knowing about it. In the short term, I will probably link to subpages instead of transcluding them (except if someone comes and suddenly remove the backlog — hint, hint :-). Eastern Orthodox Church page vandalism

[edit]

I recently discovered the messages in talk page of this ip address warning of the vandalism to this page dated Feb 22 2006.

I did not do this. The list of contributions for this IP address also does not list any of the ones that I have made which number in the dozens. I have been contributing to Wikipedia since Dec 2004 and I can only conclude that the IP address on my computer was recently changed to one that was previously in use by someone else.

I would like to appeal the warnings. --69.244.115.176 16:16, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Update I just discovered that my ISP, Comcast assigns dynamic IP addresses to residences. They can change if there is a power failure and there was one in our area a few feeks ago. --69.244.115.176 16:31, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Portal:Southeast Asia/Current events now works similarly to Portal:Current events. Thus, I'm curious if you could program LDBot to create a new date page (e.g. Portal:Southeast Asia/2006 August 24, not Portal:Southeast Asia/Current events/2006 August 24) at the same time as the new date pages for Portal:Current events, and subsequently add something like {{subst:Portal:Southeast Asia/DateHeader|2006|08|24}}. Thanks in advance. -- tariqabjotu 14:36, 23 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
