Thanks for pointing that out. I spend a lot of my time adding photos and taxoboxes, and I'm surprised I haven't had more errors than this one! I'll remove it, and see if I can't find a different image. Bob the Wikipedian, the Tree of Life WikiDragon (talk) 15:59, 12 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hemicetal image has too many oxygen

[edit]

The images in hemiacetal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Hemiacetal_formation.png and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Hemiketal_formation.png) have too many oxygen atoms. No water molecule is formed by the nucleophilic addition of an alcohol on a carbonyl group. Would it be possible to correct it? I don't know how to do it myself.

Hi, I found your nice pictures of the inositol isomers and I have added them to the inositol article.
Would it be hard to split the chiro-inositol picture in two spearate pictures, witjout captions? That would help fixing the layout of that article. Replaceable fair use File:KyriakosTheAnchorite.jpeg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:KyriakosTheAnchorite.jpeg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Vanjagenije (talk) 22:07, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Do we need a category for phosphine sulfides?

[edit]

You are encouraged to interact with the Chem Project about your ambitions for starting categories. This kind of activity has been controversial. Here is the place to discuss your plans: Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Chemistry.--Smokefoot (talk) 21:05, 13 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Do not try to force IUPAC on readers

[edit]

The chemistry project has discussed this theme extensively. There is little interest in inflicting obscure, cumbersome, and unused nomenclature rules on our readers. I realize that your intentions are good, but we have been over this point many times previously. I also discourage the creation of small categories. You can see (Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Chemicals#More overspecialized categories) that an effort is underway to clean up micro-categorization efforts by another editor. I urge you to focus your talents on content, not these details that drive readers away and annoy experienced editors. --Smokefoot (talk) 00:13, 20 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry if I caused any trouble. You mean not to write IUPAC names in the text. But in the chem box is OK, right? --kupirijo (talk) 00:17, 20 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, go ahead and include IUPAC in the chem box and it is fine to mention IUPAC names in the text. But unless IUPAC is widely used, these names should not be in section headers, names of categories, or any other place that forces readers to know this nomenclature. The most recent, fairly heated battle over this point can been seen with the log of User:Plasmic Physics. I remain slightly puzzled that you are not working more on content - how are compounds made, how do they react, their structures, etc. Those items are the heart of our project. Thanks and happy editing. --Smokefoot (talk) 00:42, 20 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I am planning on making some structures with ChemDraw soon, i.e. when I find time. --kupirijo (talk) 00:55, 20 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
What I was trying to say was that a focus on IUPAC and categories are essentially useless (or worse) activities as far as most editors and most readers are concerned. I would make a plea for content, meaty stuff like
  • how compounds are made. often there are multiple lab methods and sometimes an industrial routes that have evolved over time.
  • how they react, acid-base (pKa's), redox (potentials), attack by nucleophiles or electrophiles
  • their structures (not drawings). Selected bond lengths and angles, symmetry group (often idealized).
  • their main application and how such applications exploit something about the molecule/material
  • general references to any of the above from textbooks.
Many of the most general articles are lacking core information, if you scroll down the following list (under the Chemistry project) you will find many important articles that are very weak: http://toolserver.org/%7Ealexz/pop/view.php
Good luck, --Smokefoot (talk) 03:41, 20 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

My guess - what you are doing is net hurting Wikipedia

[edit]

I dont think that there is any serious support for your editing of naming of compounds. The terms you are inflicting on readers are unfamiliar often to experienced chemists. Wikipedia is not bound to IUPAC, we do not work for them and we are under no expectation to follow their recommendations rigidly. For biochemical molecules, your work could be especially destructive. So, I recommend again that you stop. If you dont know any chemistry and are only able to follow nomenclature books, then you might find another part of Wikipedia where your knowledge is more welcomed and more needed. --Smokefoot (talk) 14:21, 19 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Smokefoot, the IUPAC name that I changed in Coenzyme B is the PIN one. The one listed is not, nevertheless valid. I would say that O-phosphono-N-(7-sulfanylheptanoyl)-L-threonine is more informative (and correct) than 2-[(7-mercapto-1-oxoheptyl)amino]-3-phosphonooxybutanoic acid. I have also cross checked what I wrote with reliable sources (http://www.chemspider.com/Chemical-Structure.4575352.html). Also, I did not change the name of the article just the field in the infobox named IUPACName and that is all. I do not see your point of me trying to impose IUPAC nomencalture if I am just stating what the IUPAC name is at the designated place. May I suggest to include both? I also disagree with the statement that I am hurting wikipedia, especially when it is in big fonts as a title of a subsection on my user talk page. --kupirijo (talk) 14:50, 19 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on File:Chromone.svg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F2 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image page for a missing or corrupt image or an empty image description page for a Commons-hosted image.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion," which appears inside of the speedy deletion ({{db-...}}) tag (if no such tag exists, the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate). Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. — Train2104 (talk • contribs • count) 02:43, 22 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Kupirijo, and thanks for your contributions to Wikipedia!

I wanted to let you know that I’m proposing an article that you worked on, Quadruple (mathematics), for deletion because I don't think it meets our criteria for inclusion. If you don't want the article deleted:

  1. edit the page
  2. remove the text that looks like this: {{proposed deletion/dated...}}
  3. save the page

It helps to explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page. If you have any questions, feel free to ask on the Help Desk. Thanks again for contributing! JohnBlackburnewordsdeeds 00:56, 18 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Ion channels template

[edit]

Hi. Concerning the {{Ion channels}} navbox template, I strongly advise against renumbering the groups within the template unless you have a very good reason for doing this. Every page that transcludes this template, the group is specified so that the appropriate subsection is open up if the navbox if the "show" button is hit. If the groups are renumbered, all the pages that transclude this template will also need to be modified. Boghog (talk) 19:18, 10 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I see. Is it possible to find out which pages transclude which group? --kupirijo (talk) 02:06, 11 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, the pages are listed in the template. For example, all pages that transclude the {{Ion channels|g4}} template are listed under the group4/abbr4/list4 section of the previous version of the template. A more fundamental question is whether a separate "by transport mechanism" section is desirable or even necessary. All transporters have transport mechanisms. The primary criteria that distinguishes them is what they transport. Secondary criteria may include the gating mechanism (voltage, ligand, etc.), structure (porin vs. non-porins), where they are located (intra or intercellular, e.g., gap junction).
According to WP:NAV, avoid repeating links to the same article within a template. This is especially true for Navboxes like {{Ion channels}} that include collapsible groups since it is only possible to specify a single group in a transcluded template. In short, I think it is important to agree on a single hierarchy within this template. The existing hierarchy has been to first divide by what the transporter transports. If the "other" section is getting too large, it might make sense to create new sections like water (aquaporins), proton, non-selective cation, anion, etc. What do you think? Boghog (talk) 10:02, 11 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I like the idea of creating new sections like water, proton, anion etc. The way it is currently presented is not consistent with a single hierarchy especially the "other" section representing a hotchpotch of random stuff. --kupirijo (talk) 00:32, 13 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
On second thought, there were a few links that probably do belong in their own "by gating mechanism section", so I have split these out into a new section. I have also extensively edited the "miscellaneous" section so hopefully it now is better organized. How does it look now? Boghog (talk) 21:55, 13 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Much better! A few comments: should "CNC cation channel" read "CNG cation channel"? Also ... Are all porins permeable only specifically to water? Thanks. --kupirijo (talk) 23:33, 13 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for catching the GNG type which has now been corrected. I also added "(+ solutes)" to the description of what is transported by (some) porins. Finally I specified that gap junctions transport cytoplasm. Boghog (talk) 07:16, 14 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Also we could change the last group to a non-expandable one. What do you think? --kupirijo (talk) 22:03, 15 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Holdrian comma in Ottoman music

[edit]

Dear colleague Wikipedian, I have seen your attempts to make sense of the section on Holdrian comma in Ottoman music and I think that we are not yet to the real situation. The scale that your musical example reproduces as Rast, with two half flats in the signature, does not correspond to the justly-tuned major scale, which would be without key signature. Similarly, the number of Holdrian commas indicated, 9 for the major tone, 8 for the minor tone and 5 for the diatonic semitone, do not correspond to the half flats in the signature. They do correspond to the Holdrian approximation (because it is at best only an approximation) of the justly-tuned major third, that is, to what the scale would be without key signature.

@Hucbald.SaintAmand: In the Arel-Ezgi-Uzdilek notation (https://www.w3.org/2019/03/smufl13/tables/arel-ezgi-uzdilek-aeu-accidentals.html) which I am familiar with and used in Ottoman music (i.e. Turkish/Greek music) (but not in Arabic music) the mirrored flat (half flat) refers to a Holdrian comma flat. I am not very familiar with Arabic music, although most of the modes have the same names with Ottoman music but with slightly different spellings, but in this tradition the mirrored flat (half flat) flat refers to quarter tone, as if the system used there is 24-TET and not 53-TET. --kupirijo (talk) 05:59, 22 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

You write "where half flat denotes a Holdrian comma flat", but what is the meaning or "a Holdrian comma flat"? The distance between D and F is 13 Holdrian commas, and Ehalf flat is meant to be somewhere in the middle, i.e. at about 6.5 commas, in the middle of D and F – that is, half the minor third D–F. There is no reason to measure this interval in terms of Holdrian commas, (1) because Holder himself had no idea of this and (2) because this interval indeed cannot be measured in entire numbers of Holdrian commas.

@Hucbald.SaintAmand: A Holdrian coma in this case means 1/53 of the octave i.e. , or 1/9 of a Pythagorean tone (9:8 ). See also --kupirijo (talk) 08:49, 22 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The example of the Nihavend scale is even less understandable. If one considers the number of commas indicated, it would be formed exclusively of major whole tones (9 commas) and of semitones of 4 commas (chromatic semitones in just intonation, but here they are written as diatonic semitones). A Holdrian approximation of the just-intoned minor scale would have intervals of 8 5 9 8 5 9 9 commas, instead or 9 4 9 9 4 9 9. And the idea that "a medium second being somewhere in between 8 and 9 commas" makes little sense: 8 commas is a minor tone, 9 commas a major tone, and 8,5 commas therefore somehow a "mean tone". A semitone is either 4 of 5 commas, and a quarter tone therefore 2 or 2,5 commas. But Arabic or Ottoman music must be described in terms of three-quarter tones, not quarter tones, and three-quarter tones are somewhere between 4+2 = 6 and 5+2,5 = 7,5 commas.

@Hucbald.SaintAmand: The Nihavend mode cannot be compared to a 5-limit just tuning as is the Rast mode, it is actually in 3-limit Pythagorean as the E is a perfect 5th below B which is a perfect 5th below F. The sentence has medium seconds between d–e, e–f, g–a, a–b, and b–c', a medium second being somewhere in between 8 and 9 commas does not make any sense to me. I also wrote a comment in Talk:Holdrian comma#What Touma says regarding this. --kupirijo (talk) 08:56, 22 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I have no access at this point to Hassan Touma's book, and I'd like to see how he describes all this. I very strongly doubt that he starts from a Holdrian scale made of 53 equal commas. He more probably starts from just intonation scales, of which Holdrian commas give only approximations. An Arabic of Ottoman scale would better be described starting from a division of the octave in 106 half commas (or 24 quarter tones).

But you mention Turkish theorists whose works you may have read. I would be really interested to see how they describe the whole matter. It really puzzles me. Don't take the above as a criticism. I happen to know a lot about Western scales and tunings, and to have some idea about Arabic intonations. But you probably know a lot more about Ottoman music, and I'd be really interested. — Hucbald.SaintAmand (talk) 21:14, 21 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello!!.

I use InkScape, working with layers.

  1. Look for layers of this draw, with Layer|Layers... (or Shift+Ctrl+L). A panel is displayed at above-left.
  2. In this panel, close the left "eyes" of "Text", "Arrows" and "Draw". Move to "Text to path" layer (click it).
  3. Select all text. Delete it.
  4. Open all "eyes" (or, optionally, and now only the "eye" of "Text" layer). Move to "Text" layer. "Normal" text is displayed,
  5. Edit text to your language.
  6. Also you can edit the arrows if it's needed.

Then it is all right, but....

For better visualization of text:

  • Continuously:
  1. Select (only) all text.
  2. Duplicate it (Edit|Duplicate or Ctrl+D).
  3. Move this duplicated text to above layer ("Text to path") with Layer|Move Selections to Layer Above (or Shift+Page Up).
  4. Convert this duplicated text (now in "Text to path" layer) to path, with Path|Object to Path (or Shift+Ctrl+C).
  • Finally:
  1. Close the eye of "Text" layer.

After uploaded your new file, you must:

  • In the draw page file:
    • Add in {{Information... block the next text |other versions={{Other versions/Cross section of an alveoli and capillaries showing diffusion of gases}}
    • Add {{inkscape}}
  • Edit Template:Other versions/Cross section of an alveoli and capillaries showing diffusion of gases adding your new file.

--Jmarchn (talk) 16:44, 20 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Jmarchn: Thank you! Can I also duplicate the text layer? --kupirijo (talk) 17:50, 20 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Also I do not have "Liberation Sans" on my computer. This means that Inkscape picked some other font. Is that ok? --kupirijo (talk) 17:53, 20 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I believe that this font is loaded with LibreOffice. Then you can:
  • Download from [1]
  • Replace it for Arial font.

One last thing, I cannot find TextToPath, but I can do ObjectToPath. I presume that is ok, right?--kupirijo (talk) 17:56, 20 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

No, remember this draw uses layers and one of this layers is hidden ("Text" layer). You can look [2].
  • "Text to path" is the name that I give to the above layer of this draw (look at the first 1. step).
  • "Object to Path" is the name of the Inkscape command.

@Jmarchn: Thank you very much for your instructions. I have uploaded it! However, there was no need to edit the draw page file. Could you check it please? Thank you once again. Also the name of the filename is not grammatically correct, it should say "Cross section of an alveolus" not "Cross section of an alveoli". --kupirijo (talk) 23:13, 20 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you so much. Unfortunately, the files cannot be renamed. The first version of this cartoon was not mine. As you can see, my level of English is only intermediate. Jmarchn (talk) 07:55, 21 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Jmarchn: I can try and move the file to the correct name, I think it should work. Also would you like to write the text editing instructions to accompany the file? If you do not have time I can do it. --kupirijo (talk) 09:13, 21 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi!.
  1. I hope you will succeed in the renaming request you made. Ever, I have made a similar request and they rejected it.
  2. I added a new version with a link text in the draw (but located out of the margin of the page to drawing). The link leads to a page with the text that I write here above (commons:User:Jmarchn/Edition of Inkscape draw with layers). Jmarchn (talk) 11:03, 21 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Jmarchn: Thank you for the link. However I could not find the link on the page as I did not understand exactly where it is located. I have added an editing instructions section with your link. What do you think? --kupirijo (talk) 16:17, 21 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. I added a box in the page (commons:Cross section of an alveoli and capillaries showing diffusion of gases.svg) after the inkscape box. In the next few days, I will add this message (a template) to other drawing pages where I use this system. Jmarchn (talk) 18:25, 21 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Jmarchn: Excellent! That looks very nice. I will delete the section I created then. kupirijo (talk) 21:27, 21 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

External academic review and publication of Wikipedia pages

[edit]

Hi, This is a note to ask: would you be interested in submitting any articles for external, academic peer review to improve their accuracy and generate a citable publication?

The WikiJournal of Science (www.wikijsci.org) aims to couple the rigour of academic peer review with the extreme reach of the encyclopedia. For existing Wikipedia articles, it's a great way to get additional feedback from external experts. Peer-reviewed articles are dual-published both as standard academic PDFs, as well as having changes integrated back into Wikipedia. This improves the scientific accuracy of the encyclopedia, and rewards authors with citable, indexed publications. It also provides much greater reach than is normally achieved through traditional scholarly publishing.

The WP:WikiJournal article nominations page should allow simple submission of existing Wikipedia pages for external review. T.Shafee(Evo&Evo)talk 05:09, 30 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Turkish makam

[edit]

I've been looking at the Turkish makam page, which you seem to be the major contributor to. It is quite useful (although complex!) However, in the musical notation for individual makams (e.g. Rast), the intervals "B" and "T" are defined (in the Cargah diagram), but the intervals "S", "K" and "A" are not. Could these be added? (I don't know enough to be able to figure them out). Thanks. Finney1234 (talk) 18:38, 27 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Finney1234: Hello, if understand your question correctly, "S", "K" and "A" are defined in Turkish_makam#Intervals. --kupirijo (talk) 18:18, 28 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, yes, I missed that location. (So: B & T are defined twice). Finney1234 (talk) 18:53, 28 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

kupirijo I re-read the article, and realized that it's very well done. There are a few places where the English is a little rough, so I'm going to do some small syntax changes. Finney1234 (talk) 01:58, 2 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

kupirijo A friend of mine (who has has extensively studied Turkish classical music) suggested that the folk/classical section shouldn't be at the beginning (it's not the main focus of makam proper, and he thought that folk makam actually deserves its own article). I'm not going to write one, but I would like to move that section to later in the article; would you have any objection? (I know I can go ahead and do it, but you've put a lot of work into the article so I like checking first before disrupting your creation). Finney1234 (talk) 14:46, 4 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Finney1234: I am not familiar with the Ayak system and I do not have a strong opinion about the position of the section Turkish_makam#Comparison_in_use_in_Turkish_classical_to_folk_music, so please go ahead and move the section later in the article. Please note that the first sentence of the article mentions Turkish folk music. --kupirijo (talk) 10:33, 5 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello and mea culpa

[edit]

Hi there Kupirijo. I just wanted to drop a note to apologize for talking past you at Talk:Gram-negative_bacteria#Standardized_spelling_&_punctuation. With the mix of 2017 and 2020 posts, I didn't notice that your comments were recent until you pinged me. By the time I did notice, SM had continued the discussion elsewhere so I didn't directly reply. The reply (briefly as possible) is that "Gram" in the lowercase when used as an adjective is recommended by some style guides (e.g. the CDC for their journal Emerging Infectious Diseases). The uppercase is also recommended by some style guides. So you'll see it both ways, though often it doesn't catch the eye regardless. English is, after all, a fairly silly and inconsistent language. So far to my knowledge there's no Wikipedia-wide guideline that one style should be preferred in our articles. Perhaps that will change. More importantly, it's nice to see another human at a microbiology-related talk page. I'm sorry to report that WikiProject Microbiology is mostly quiescent, so if you're interested in collaborating with other human beings on the topic, you may find more luck at the recently merged WikiProject Molecular Biology, or at the actually quite active WikiProject Medicine. I hope I'll see you around at those forums (fora?). Lord knows we could use many many more eyes/hands on the microbiology and molecular biology-related articles. I hope you're staying well during these tumultuous times. Warm regards, Ajpolino (talk) 22:53, 28 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
