HBC AIV Helperbot Request (recategorized by Krellis)
Could you also consider monitoring Wikipedia:Usernames for administrator attention/holding pen to remove usernames that eventually get blocked? --Stephen 09:14, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
- Can you point me to where this has been discussed and a consensus reached? The AIV helperbots can't be simply pointed at any old page, wiki etiquette dictates that I need to establish that there is a consensus of the people involved in operating that page indicating that they wish for the bot to run on the page before I make a change like that. Thanks! —Krellis (Talk) 22:20, 8 August 2009 (UTC)
NameWatcherBot: Accent stripping?
Some recent attempts at bad username generation have added accents to characters to obfuscate English words.
A quick look at User:H/HBC_MCP/NameWatcher suggests NameWatcherBot does not strip accents before attempting to match patterns from the blacklist.
To prevent this sort of obfuscation, I suggest the bot should, in addition to any other string normalization prior to comparison, remove accents by first performing Unicode NFKD normalization, which splits accented characters into base characters and combining accents, and then removing all combining characters (which are those in the ranges from 0x300 to 0x36f inclusive and from 0x1dc0 to 0x1dff inclusive) from the result. -- The Anome (talk) 11:56, 22 August 2009 (UTC)
- I am planning on adding an option for recognising homoglyphs soon. This will help a lot. Chillum 20:06, 3 September 2009 (UTC)
name bot regxp forms
I've noticed that your bot (HBC Namewatcher) does remove offensive names, but doesn't notice tweaked names like User:Ffuk1 I suggest the regxps ought to be modified to accomodate these names. ManishEarthTalk • Stalk 13:52, 1 September 2009 (UTC)
- You're welcome to edit or suggest edits to the blacklist (only administrators can edit, others can suggest edits on the talk page). I only operate the bot, I don't actually maintain the blacklist myself (I'm not an administrator, so I actually can't make changes to it directly, in fact). —Krellis (Talk) 12:37, 2 September 2009 (UTC)
UAA - backlog
Hi - just wondering, has anything changed with the helperbot's threshold for a backlog recently? I've been reporting items here and I realize it's early in US/UK - but just seems like it's been a while since an admin was there. Maybe it's just a quantity threshold, and not a time/age threshold, but it just seems like with some of the age and severity of these it should have been listed as a backlog earlier. Thanks in advance. 7 09:18, 19 October 2009 (UTC)
- The backlog tag is added and removed by the bots simply based on the number of reports waiting, not their age/severity/etc. The number of reports at which the backlog tag is added and removed can be changed by modifying the "AddLimit" and "RemoveLimit" values in the helperbot opt-in string in the page. Hope this helps! —Krellis (Talk) 16:03, 19 October 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks, that's helpful to know. Think there is any merit in requesting an enhancement that tracks aging? It just seems to me like 1 admin page with one very old report might be more worthy of attention than a page with multiple new reports. Regards. 7 22:39, 19 October 2009 (UTC)
Formatting Comment
I know the formatting sucks, and the sorting isn't working, I will fix that when I have time. If you have a suggestion for the formatting go ahead and make it. As for the sorting, I thought I had it working but I will have to fiddle some more later. HighInBC (Need help? Ask me) 16:52, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
Formatting Idea
How about a table for formatting? Without taking the time to edit every single entry, I did a couple of rows from the WWII index at User:Krellis/Sandbox. You'll note I added a feature request there, too - I'm not sure if it's really possible, but it would be neat to try to include an estimate of the number of replies in a given section. One way to try to approximate it would be the number of times "UTC" appears in the section - not perfect, by any means, but it might work. Or you could go by changes in indentation level. As long as you indicate somewhere that it's approximate, that probably wouldn't matter too much. Of course, I have no idea how difficult it would be to actually implement :) The table with alternating row backgrounds still might be at least somewhat of an improvement from the current style, since it will keep all of the links together in a row and help prevent items from running together. —Krellis 23:33, 2 February 2007 (UTC)
- I was hoping that someone would suggest a better format, I will implement that. As for how many replies, this is difficult. I suppose I can count the timestamps... I will work on it. HighInBC (Need help? Ask me) 23:36, 2 February 2007 (UTC)
Target
Are there any specifications on what the target can be. I am trying to put it on Talk:Aang/Archive Topics. Would Aang/Archive Topics work too. If so, which one would be better? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Parent5446 (talk • contribs) 21:35, November 18, 2007 UTC
- The bot doesn't care - either of those would be fine, as long as the opt-in exists. Talk:Aang/Archive Topics would be the more "standard" way of doing it, though - because the archive refers to talk topics, it makes sense for it to be in the talk space. In fact, I'm not sure subpages are allowed in the article namespace on enwiki, so the latter option may not actually be possible, and should almost certainly be avoided. —Krellis (Talk) 12:34, 19 November 2007 (UTC)
missed index
Hello. The HBCAIB didn't index some of my talk page articles. Can you please fix that for me? Thanks. Sincerely, Sir Intellegence - smartr tahn eaver!!!! 00:19, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
Ummmm... What I meant is that it didn't index all of the sections in my archive(s). Can you please fix that. Thanks for your help! Sincerely, Sir Intellegence - smartr tahn eaver!!!! 00:23, 11 December 2007 (UTC)
- Sorry for the delay - it looks like your opt-in had the wrong number of leading zeroes - you're not using any leading zeroes in your actual archive naming, but you had specified 3 for that parameter. I've changed it to 0, so your archives should get indexed properly on the next run of the bot. —Krellis (Talk) 19:55, 31 December 2007 (UTC)
Sortable Numbers
When the bot creates sortable boxes (like one located here), make the "replies" section's number two-digit, i.e. 01, 05, 11, ect. It would make the sorting so much better. Thanks. Pbroks13 (talk) 05:15, 7 December 2007 (UTC)
- Really? It looks to me like the sort works properly with single-digit numbers anyway. If I remember correctly, the sort order is intelligent about numerical sorts, so it should sort properly even without zero padding. Let me know if there's an example where it doesn't actually work - I just checked the example you gave and it looks like a correct numerical sort to me. —Krellis (Talk) 19:58, 31 December 2007 (UTC)
HBCAI not marking edits as bot edits
Hi there! First, let me just commend you on writing an incredibly useful bot! The ability to quickly survey current and past discussion is tremendously useful. • But, of course, I have a question: In my watchlist, most work done by robots is flagged as a "bot edit". There's a little black "b" next to the entry, and bot edits can be shown or hidden. HBCAI's edits don't appear to get marked that way. No "b", and they always show. Is this a known issue? • To try and help out, I went looking for information on how those edits get so marked. Unfortunately, I can't find anything. Not a word. :( —DragonHawk (talk|hist) 18:58, 31 December 2007 (UTC)
- P.S.: Ah-ha! I think I figured it out! listusers shows that User:HBC Archive Indexerbot is not flagged as a bot. All the helpers are, but not that one. • I dunno who to tell about this, though. :) —DragonHawk (talk|hist) 19:03, 31 December 2007 (UTC)
- Yeah, actually, I believe this was intentional - at the very bottom of the bot's request for approval you'll see that Mets501 notes in his approval message that the bot does not need a flag. I think there was some more detailed discussion of this somewhere, though I'm not sure where. As I recall, the thinking was that the bot doesn't do a huge number of edits, and so didn't need a flag, as it wouldn't be flooding recent changes. The bot does have over 100 archive indexes that it's maintaining, so one could possibly argue that it does more edits now than it used to do - I'd certainly have no problem with it getting a flag, it's just something we would need to poke the bot approvals group and/or a bureaucrat about. I'm not 100% of the best place to put it, though - either WT:BAG or the bot owner's noticeboard seem most logical to me. —Krellis (Talk) 19:51, 31 December 2007 (UTC)
- Ahhh, I see. I decided to mention it over at WP:BOWN (here). I guess it doesn't really matter to me that much -- I can always just unwatch the index pages -- but I still think it's worth reexamining. • Thanks again! —DragonHawk (talk|hist) 21:32, 31 December 2007 (UTC)

ANI
Since an index of the hundreds of archive pages of the administrators noticeboard and ANI is virtually unusable (my browser has trouble even attempting to sort the table) do you think a combined index could be made of the last half-dozen or so archives of AN and ANI? —Random832 17:37, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
Can you help me with the set-up?
I'm trying to set up the bot to archive the (as yet non-existent) archives for WP:MUSEUMS. I created the target but I'm a little lost on masks and stuff. Do I have to do numerical archives or can it be monthly? I ask because I'm not sure how to set up numericals, but I can c/p the source for the monthly archive from my own talk, which I set up for MiszaBot. I'm aiming for a 30 day archive time. Thanks! TRAVELLINGCARIMy storyTell me yours 18:00, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
- At the moment monthly archives are only supported manually - that is, each time a new archive page is created, you have to add it to the archive index opt-in code. If you take a look at the source of my talk, you'll see both archiving to numbered archives and the archive indexerbot opt-in:
{{User:MiszaBot/config |maxarchivesize = 75K |counter = 2 |algo = old(30d) |archive = User talk:Krellis/Archive/Archive %(counter)d }} {{User:HBC Archive Indexerbot/OptIn |target=./Archive |mask=/Archive/Archive <#> |leading_zeros=0 |indexhere=yes |template=User:Krellis/archive template }}
- The MiszaBot config is very similar to what you're using, I expect, except that it's using a numeric counter instead of monthly - just set it to start at 1 and replace the path to the talk page, of course. Roughly the same would apply for the archive indexerbot opt-in (and you'd probably just remove the template= part entirely and just use the default template to start).
- If you'd like, I can probably just set it up for you, as long as you don't mind numbered archives rather than named by month. Let me know! —Krellis (Talk) 20:11, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
Help regarding index numbering and interwiki links
For some reason the bot is linking to a non-existant article here, even though I have my archives on the page User_talk:Daedalus969/Archives/1. Currently, I have manually fixed the links, and undid the edit by the bot as it messes them up. What is wrong here? I can't get it to work.— Dædαlus→quick link / Improve 04:47, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

Duplicate index entries from page moves?
I recently had the AIDS talk sub-pages moved into sequential archives (Talk:AIDS/NPOV dispute → Talk:AIDS/Archive 6, etc). It looked to have been properly done, but now the indexer bot is creating duplicate entries for all pages that were part of the move (6 and up,current archive). Is there something that needs to be adjusted that is causing the misfire. -Optigan13 (talk) 04:47, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

Sortable durations
In the current setup, the "sortable" table cannot possibly sort "durations" in any usable way. There is no way to easily distinguish "9 minutes" is shorter than "5 hours and 29 minutes" which is a shorter period of time than "2 days and 9 hours". My impression is that users don't care about the topics that with minutes-length duration, I guess it would be best to use a constant zero-padded days+hours format, respectively: "00 days 00 hours", "00 days 05 hours", "02 days 09 hours". Could you please consider this? --Kubanczyk (talk) 10:42, 8 June 2008 (UTC) Oh, an example of this is Wikipedia talk:Attribution/Archive index. --Kubanczyk (talk) 10:44, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
- There is a
%%durationsecs%%
replacement string available when creating custom templates - this string will expand to the duration in seconds, which is safely sortable. You can use some of the advice at Help:Sorting for making an invisible sort key - specifically, making your duration column look something like this should do the trick:<span style="display: none;">%%durationsecs%%</span> %%duration%%
. I don't have an example of it right now (though I just changed my own template to make sure it's working properly - I know I tested it when I added the feature some time back, though), but I'm pretty sure that should work. —Krellis (Talk) 15:34, 9 June 2008 (UTC)- Wow, thanks, nice trick. --Kubanczyk (talk) 18:02, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
- No problem, and thanks for the updates on the docs! I should probably get the default template updated at some point to match mine so it's more useful. —Krellis (Talk) 19:17, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
- Wow, thanks, nice trick. --Kubanczyk (talk) 18:02, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

Deleted index
Hi Krellis,
Very cool what you can do with this bot. I have read the information on the HBC Archive Indexerbot page but I have missed anything there which may explain why the bot deleted my archive index. No biggie--I just would like to make sure I have set it up correctly. I had it set up with carriage returns and line feeds after the "|"s to make it easier to edit, but now I have removed them in case that causes a hiccup. Here is what I have now:
{{User:HBC Archive Indexerbot/OptIn|target=User talk:Newportm/Archives|mask=User talk:Newportm/Archives/2008|leading_zeros=0|indexhere=yes|template=User:Krellis/archive template}}
does that look right to you? I have it in User:Newportm/Template/Talkheader which is transcluded onto my talk page...is that a problem? Thanks! Newportm (talk) 01:01, 20 August 2008 (UTC)
- I answered my own question. I deduce that the opt-in statement does not currently function in a transcluded header because this item is currently in the "To-do box" on this Talk page for HBC Archive Indexerbot. Newportm (talk) 18:22, 21 August 2008 (UTC)
Help with the source code
Hey, hey! So, got your source code. Got the package I needed (MediaWiki). Bot running gives Can't locate object method "special_export" via package "MediaWiki" at archivebot.pl line 317 error in a code part, which is responsible for gathering the jobs to be done. Any idea what am I doing wrong? Did I get the wrong package or are you using older version than 1.13? Greetings, Hołek ҉ 12:04, 22 May 2009 (UTC)
- I think that package may have been withdrawn entirely, as the link to CPAN now comes up empty. Unfortunate as my code uses it too. You may want to hang onto any distros you have, and long term consider switching to a different MW access mechanism. There seem to be a lot of them for perl but I don't know which is best.. ++Lar: t/c 18:49, 4 September 2009 (UTC)
Bot editing while logged out
Hi. One of the AIV helper bots was editing logged out as 208.86.225.40 (talk · contribs · WHOIS). There was a note on the talk page there that it might be yours. I blocked it for now. Let me - or whoever - know when the bot is logged back in and they'll unblock the IP. Thanks. Wknight94 talk 14:43, 27 October 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks, for some reason even though it was failing the logged-in check, it wasn't re-logging-in properly. I've restarted it and it appears to be editing logged in again now. You can unblock the IP if you have a chance, thanks! —Krellis (Talk) 18:26, 27 October 2009 (UTC)

- Found at least one place that was causing it to think it was logged out all the time and repeatedly log back in, but that should have been causing the opposite of an "editing logged out" problem, so I'm not quite sure what's up with that. I don't see any reason that the login check would be failing to find when the bot is logged out, so it should really never go more than 10 minutes logged out. Maybe you just caught it in one of those circumstances? In theory it could probably check its login status on every edit, but I don't have time to look at doing that right now. —Krellis (Talk) 19:34, 28 October 2009 (UTC)

Your bot may have made a mistake
A while ago, one user reported another on the Vandalism Report Page. Soon after, the one reported vandalized the report, placing someone else - Grawp - in their place, who was perma-blocked, probably erroneously. Attempts to undo the vandalism were met with edit conflicts by your HBC AIV helperbot3, and thus this bot went ahead and banned Grawp. -RadicalOne---Contact Me 23:22, 24 November 2009 (UTC)
- The bot doesn't ban or block anyone, it just cleans up the AIV page by removing users that have been blocked by administrators. If it was repeatedly removing an entry, it was because it referred to a blocked user, and thus did not need to be listed any further. I hope this helps to clarify. —Krellis (Talk) 14:03, 29 November 2009 (UTC)

Redlinks
Hye. The archive bot I use added many sections multiple times into my archives and into different archive pages. The HBC bot then indexed these. I then deleted those archive pages but the redlinks to the sections which no longer exist still appear in my index. I have tried to blank the index to make it start again but it re adds the sections. Is there a way around this? ·Add§hore· Talk/Cont 08:25, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
- The bot uses caching and its watchlist to find changes to pages, it SHOULD have detected your changes and updated appropriately, if it's still wrong (almost a year later now, sorry), ping me on my talk and I'll clear the caches. —Krellis (Talk) 13:59, 2 December 2009 (UTC)

IP
Are you aware that this bot is currently running on an IP account? I haven't blocked it as it doesn't actually appear to be malfunctioning in any way, but you might start getting funny looks soon. – iridescent 23:52, 5 April 2009 (UTC)
- Sometimes it doesn't log in properly, or gets logged out while working, my IP is now actually blocked so that can't happen again. —Krellis (Talk) 13:57, 2 December 2009 (UTC)
Accent quirk
It seem the bot does not understand accented letters because the few wikilinked headers on my talk pages, that are recorded in the "Discussion Topic" column, become mispelled redlinks in the index created by the bot. The problem seems to be that the accented letter get mangled and so the link no longer works. Have a look at the fourth entries in my index at User talk:Ww2censor/Archive/Index to see what I mean though the "Active Link" does work. The third entry, also an accented header, is also curious but with a different result giving an curious topic name and the active link does not work, bring you only to the talk page and not to the actual post. It is not a big deal but it is odd and maybe you did not realise this was happening. Cheers ww2censor (talk) 13:28, 22 September 2009 (UTC)
- Yeah, I've tried a number of things to make the UTF8 support work better for non-plain-ASCII characters, but it's still not perfect. Unfortunately I don't really have any time to spend looking at it at this point, but patches are welcome! —Krellis (Talk) 13:47, 2 December 2009 (UTC)
Duplicate topic listings
I'm pleased I managed to create an index on the first try, but maybe I used the wrong parameters — each topic is listed twice:

Q1. How might I correct this, short of manually deleting every other line?
This is what I placed on the page to be indexed (double braces omitted here):
{User:HBC Archive Indexerbot/OptIn|target=Talk:Testosterone/Archive 1/Index|mask=Talk:Testosterone/Archive 1|leading_zeros=0|indexhere=yes}
I figured the bot would delete this line after running, so it doesn't process over and over. Q2. Should I remove it myself? — VoxLuna ☾ orbitland 21:51, 24 October 2009 (UTC)
- The duplication is because you're using "indexhere=yes" - normally you would make an index that covers all archives on a page, which would live at something like "Talk:Testosterone/Archive Index", and have a mask of "Talk:Testosterone/Archive <#>", with the opt-in string placed on Talk:Testosterone. You CAN use the bot the way you're using it, but for it to not duplicate when used that way you'll need to change "indexhere=yes" to "indexhere=no". —Krellis (Talk) 13:50, 2 December 2009 (UTC)
duplicated section titles
When there are two section names that are identical except for different capitalisation, the bot is not using an anchor that works. See here, where the previous link to Wikipedia_talk:Civility/Archive_3#Adding_a_link doesnt go to the right section. John Vandenberg (chat) 07:38, 27 December 2008 (UTC)
- I believe I have a quick fix for this and am running a test run of the bot now to see if it corrects the problem. Thanks! —Krellis (Talk) 13:56, 2 December 2009 (UTC)
- It seems to be working correctly now, thanks for pointing out this bug! —Krellis (Talk) 19:21, 2 December 2009 (UTC)
HBCAI not working on Talk:Troll_(Internet)
Hi, Talk:Troll (Internet)/Archive index page exists, but there is nothing on it, although there are two archives on the discussion page. I didn't add the bot, nor am I experienced with bots. As I couldn't see anything obviously wrong with the parameters, I didn't want to interfere with the settings. Can you help when you have a moment, please? Centrepull (talk) 05:38, 21 November 2009 (UTC)
- Per the log file, "# 11:47:30 02 December 2009: Not writing to Talk:Troll/Archive index as I cannot find permission (sourced from: Talk:Troll (Internet)) HBCAI" - the opt-in was trying to index to "Talk:Troll/Archive index" rather than "Talk:Troll (Internet)/Archive index". I've updated it and it should work going forward. —Krellis (Talk) 13:46, 2 December 2009 (UTC)
Bot can't handle the en dash character

- I decided to try and debug this myself. Currently, I'm pretty sure the fault is in either the create_report subroutine or the diff operation (or both). However, I'm struggling to determine where and why. Could I perhaps see the cached version the bot saves for the pages I linked above? I'm also interested to know under what file name it saves them. Rami R 21:53, 2 December 2009 (UTC)
- Just letting you know that I'm still interested in debugging this issue, and that getting the bot's offline versions of those indexes would greatly assist me. Rami R 13:58, 30 December 2009 (UTC)
- Sorry, I'm just not quite sure of the best way to get them to you - any suggestions in that regard? I guess it's public wiki content so there's no major privacy issue, I could just tar them up and send them via e-mail? - Just letting you know that I'm still interested in debugging this issue, and that getting the bot's offline versions of those indexes would greatly assist me. Rami R 13:58, 30 December 2009 (UTC)
HBACI not starting indexing
On some talk pages (e.g. Talk:John Ford), HBACI is not starting indexing:
- 11:55:57 30 December 2009: No change, skipping Talk:John Ford/Archive index
Why?--Oneiros (talk) 13:21, 30 December 2009 (UTC)
- Judging by the logs, I'd say this is what happened: The bot did a dry-run on the 29th, after you added the bot code to the talk page. Since then, there have been no changes to the talk page. Thus, the bot is not aware that there are changes to be written. Further changes to the page should (baring any unforeseen future dry-runs) result in the bot writing the index. 13:56, 30 December 2009 (UTC)
- Ah. The bot code was on the page for a long time, but the index page was missing. So I'll just add a note to the talk page and the indexing will start.--Oneiros (talk) 14:35, 30 December 2009 (UTC)
- Can you have consider adding a parameter called "checknew" = yes/no, #
- Basically it will show a table of every single article that is being requested to index. The # represent the interval when it will check if new article exist (interval units: # of days). I think this will be helpful in knowing how many article may need for the temporary. The page will have a simple table of (article name, Archive Amount (S#), interval(yes/no) ). S# refers to special archive namespace. Though this might be a temporary feature, since Wikimedia Userability Initiatives is having a plan on task. Thanks. --173.183.102.184 (talk) 13:34, 21 January 2010 (UTC)
- Ah. The bot code was on the page for a long time, but the index page was missing. So I'll just add a note to the talk page and the indexing will start.--Oneiros (talk) 14:35, 30 December 2009 (UTC)
Confused bot at Talk:Homosexuality/Archive index
I think HBC Archive Indexerbot has gotten confused by my reorganisation of some of the talk page archives at Talk:Homosexuality. I moved archives 11–17 to archives 13–19, and then moved Talk:Homosexuality/Archive11 and Talk:Homosexuality/Archive12 to more standard page titles; the latter pages weren't linked from Talk:Homosexuality before the reshuffle. I also moved a few of the messages at Talk:Homosexuality/Archive 10 to Talk:Homosexuality/Archive 13. I tried blanking the archive index, but the diff between the pre-reshuffle and the current version shows that the index bot has duplicated and removed several topics. I think the index of Talk:Homosexuality needs to be re-generated from scratch in order to fix the mess. What's the best way of doing that? Graham87 01:57, 22 January 2010 (UTC)
- I've cleared the bot's cache and watchlist and am doing a fresh run now (it needs to have that done every once in a while to get through problems like this anyway). Hopefully that should clear everything up - I'll also take a look at your current setup and make sure it looks good as well. —Krellis (Talk) 22:13, 23 January 2010 (UTC)
- There was an error in a particular opt-in that was causing the bot to get stuck, so it wasn't dealing with the cache clear very well... I've identified and fixed this, and am firing off another run with the report cache cleared, so hopefully it should write a new update that clears this up within the next hour or so. —Krellis (Talk) 20:55, 26 January 2010 (UTC)
bugs
Why is the bot not writing an index for Talk:Michael Jackson, since I already created the index (Talk:Michael Jackson/Archive index). and request it here. --173.183.102.184 (talk) 22:19, 24 January 2010 (UTC)
- I'm not the bot owner - I'm doing some talk page stalking. However I suspect it's because you didn't put the correct text at Talk:Michael Jackson/Archive index; I've fixed it for you. Keep in mind that the bot has stopped for the moment, presumably to deal with my query in the section above. However, the bot did two edit runs after you created the archive index for Michael Jackson, so if you'd created it correctly, the bot should have worked as far as I can tell. Graham87 04:02, 25 January 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks Graham, looks like that did the trick for them! —Krellis (Talk) 16:59, 31 January 2010 (UTC)
UTF-8 characters in section titles
Another problem in Talk:Homosexuality/Archive index, which I discovered while doing a diff between the new and old versions, relates to UTF-8 characters in section titles. After the entry for ""taxes on homosexual boy brothels ...", an entry appears titled "लà¥à¤à¥à¤à ...". When I try to click on the link for that section, both Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox 3 crash without an error message, though this may be a problem with my screen reader. However the garbage section title is a problem; the section title following that one is listed as "âSexâ is inherent to meaning of âhomosexualityâ", which is supposed to contain curly quotes. Graham87 13:09, 27 January 2010 (UTC)
- Oh I notice that you've replied to concerns about UTF-8 above. Graham87 13:46, 27 January 2010 (UTC)
- Yeah, the UTF-8 support is ... painful, at best. Unfortunately, as I've mentioned above, I don't really have a lot of time to spend dealing with the bot and wiki issues these days (and have taken nearly a full month back and forth getting data to Rami regarding the above issue). I'm happy to take specific patches to the code or directed indications of things to try to fix, but no promises on implementation times or anything more than that, sorry. —Krellis (Talk) 17:02, 31 January 2010 (UTC)
- Turns out this bugged me enough that I spent time messing with it rather than playing video games this afternoon. I'm doing a run of the bot now that I believe should fix this issue; it's taking a while because it needs to update most of the indexes it manages, which is quite a few these days, but once it gets to the article in question we'll see how it does. Fingers crossed! —Krellis (Talk) 18:21, 31 January 2010 (UTC)
- Well, it sort of got better, but not really right. I have another idea that I'll try once this run finishes (it's taking a crazy long time because it has to re-write almost all of the indexes). On the plus side, this did fix some things I didn't even realize needed fixing! —Krellis (Talk) 20:22, 31 January 2010 (UTC)
- Yet another run is still processing, but I think I've got it this time. I'm heading AFK for the night but will try to check in some time tomorrow to make sure it really worked right. The article I spot checked looks good, though! —Krellis (Talk) 02:15, 1 February 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks, I think you've nailed it on this run; the section titles containing unicode characters display correctly, and the links to them work properly. The link to the section below the one about homosexual boy brothels in Talk:Homosexuality/Archive index still crashes for me, but I've found out that it's definitely a problem with my screen reader JAWS; it's probably because the URL is so long. The problem with UTF-8 characters is now resolved as far as I'm concerned. Graham87 03:56, 1 February 2010 (UTC)
- It still messes up the UTF-8 characters in edit summaries, such as this edit. Graham87 04:13, 1 February 2010 (UTC)
(Un-indent) Thanks Graham! I'm glad it's working better in the actual index bodies. I did also confirm that those links don't cause any crashing problems for me, so it does sound like the screen reader is contributing to that problem. I've made a change that should fix the edit summary issue, but will have to wait until a run that actually has high-ASCII characters in an edit summary to verify. Thanks a lot for your help with this! —Krellis (Talk) 13:43, 1 February 2010 (UTC)

Hi there—please forgive me if this question has been answered before, but I looked through the archives and didn't see anything. My talk page, User talk:Mononomic, has the HBC Archive Indexerbot code and used to properly archive the page, but does no longer. When/if you get around to reviving the bot ...
Please clear its cache and watchlist, like you did the last time I broke an archive index. I just moved some messages that were improperly archived at Talk:Arnold Schwarzenegger/Archive 1 to Talk:Arnold Schwarzenegger/Archive 4, and that will probably confuse the bot. Also, Talk:Arnold Schwarzenegger/Archive index hasn't been edited since February, even though some sections had been archived into archive 1 after that date. Thanks. Graham87 08:10, 23 June 2010 (UTC)
- Cleared the bot's caches and watchlist, it appears to be running okay on my home server now, we'll see how it goes, a run with empty caches will take a while to complete. —Krellis (Talk) 12:53, 25 June 2010 (UTC)
- Clean run complete, see if that works better. —Krellis (Talk) 17:52, 25 June 2010 (UTC)
Indexing by date
Hi, I noticed that your bot creates an index with all the titles and responses, but are you aware of a tool which can categorize the archives by date? For example, race and intelligence has 82 archives. When I'm looking at a particular section of the history, I know the date and I want to see if discussion occurred in that time period - but there seems to be no precise way to identify which one of the 82 archive pages to look at. This doesn't seem like it would too difficult to program, although I don't have the skills to do it.II | (t - c) 03:16, 24 June 2010 (UTC)
- Sorry, I'm not aware of a tool to do that off-hand, though you should be able to sort an archive index created by the Archive Indexerbot by thread start time, if memory serves, using the default template. —Krellis (Talk) 12:54, 25 June 2010 (UTC)
- No, not using the default template, but rather User:Krellis/archive template or a similar template such as User:PleaseStand/Archive index template (the latter will require changes for non-user talk pages). PleaseStand (talk) 19:18, 25 June 2010 (UTC)

Stale index links for a moved archive
Hello! First, thanks for handling the care and feeding of HBC Archive Indexerbot. Hugely useful and I'm sure under-appreciated. • But, of course, I'm here because I have a problem: The index at Wikipedia talk:Citation needed/Archive index has a bunch of redlinks to Wikipedia talk:Citation needed/Archive 5. "Archive 5" was mistakenly created; it should have been #1 and has since been moved to Wikipedia talk:Citation needed/Archive 1. However HBCAI doesn't appear to have noticed that. I tried blanking the index, but it just got re-created with the redlinks. Any ideas on what can be done to clue HBCAI in to the change? —DragonHawk (talk|hist) 19:58, 8 August 2010 (UTC)

If not logged in, the bot is continuously going to trigger the filter resulting in "Tag: possibly non-minor edit". If nothing can be done, it should probably be resolved at the edit filter itself. mechamind90 01:30, 29 October 2010 (UTC)
- Is it possible to debug the bot code? I assume the problem relies in the login procedure when the bot starts. Based on the logfiles it seems like the bot is logged out already from the start. Can the problem be that logging ('Connecting to Wikipedia') starts before the actual login? I'm used to coding, but Perl isn't my area. --Kslotte (talk) 18:33, 4 November 2010 (UTC)
- From what I've seen it's never running a full run logged out, and it does in fact check to ensure that it logged in at the start. The problem is that it's getting logged out in the middle of its runs for some unknown reason. I've added a forced login attempt before each archive page is written to see if that helps. —Krellis (Talk) 15:05, 9 November 2010 (UTC)

- Unfortunately I'm not 100% sure it's that simple, as the bot does not use the modern API, but still submits via index.php. I'm not clear from the documentation if the bot assert will do anything in that situation, but I've added it and we'll see what happens. —Krellis (Talk) 19:33, 10 November 2010 (UTC)

Please see this. Had to stop it the hard way. Favonian (talk) 12:43, 19 November 2010 (UTC)
- Sorry, I'm not sure what's going on. :| The assert seemed to be working but apparently it isn't. You can softblock that IP for a longer duration, it should theoretically remain assigned to me for a while. —Krellis (Talk) 16:55, 19 November 2010 (UTC)
and again ..
The IP is now indef blocked - it can edit while logged in. Maybe you should check if you are logged in before every edit?
Note: It was mentioned at WP:ANI. You might want to comment there. --Dirk Beetstra T C 12:34, 25 November 2010 (UTC)
- Perhaps its probably time to rewrite the bot to use the new API? Because its clearly caused by trying to work the old way. -DJSasso (talk) 12:43, 25 November 2010 (UTC)
And again...
Just to let you know, I have temporarily blocked the IP 71.244.115.102 which appears to be used by HBC Archive Indexerbot when logged out. -- Ed (Edgar181) 00:07, 27 November 2010 (UTC)
- I just noticed that there is a report at Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/Incidents#Another_logged_out_bot and thought you should be notified. Cheers, -- Ed (Edgar181) 00:15, 27 November 2010 (UTC)
Indexerbot logged out again, i think
Hello. This message is being sent to inform you that there currently is a discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents regarding an issue with which you may have been involved. Thank you. --- cymru lass (hit me up)⁄(background check) 07:46, 28 November 2010 (UTC)
- mw:Extension:AssertEdit is installed on en.wp. MER-C 13:25, 28 November 2010 (UTC)
- Yes a fix to stop it doing the edits (but not necessarily recovering cleanly) would be to change page.pm's save method so that it includes assert=bot as a URL parameter. So POST $obj->_wiki_url . "&action=edit"," becomes POST $obj->_wiki_url . "&action=edit&assert=bot", note that this appears twice in the method. --82.7.40.7 (talk) 14:02, 28 November 2010 (UTC)
- Just noticed the message higher up where you say you've already done something like this and you weren't sure if it worked when not using the API. Well it does work when not using the API (try a url like http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Administrators%27_noticeboard/Incidents&action=edit&assert=bot from your non-bot account) not sure what you already tried so can't tell why it doesn't work. --82.7.40.7 (talk) 18:30, 28 November 2010 (UTC)
- Hmm, I must have missed that there were two posts in that method in page.pm, maybe that's why it was partially working but not entirely. I've added the bot assert to the second location, will see if maybe it clears up now (though I think both of my possible public IPs are indef softblocked so it may be hard to tell. :)). Thanks for that pointer, and sorry it took me so long to actually see it! —Krellis (Talk) 18:54, 24 January 2011 (UTC)

It's back—and gone
As soon as one-month block of 71.244.115.102 (talk · contribs · WHOIS) expired, the bot started doing its stuff anonymously. It has now been blocked for three months, hoping that the problem can be fixed in the meantime. Happy New Year, bots and people! Favonian (talk) 12:01, 31 December 2010 (UTC)
Indexerbot down?
I've noticed it hasn't been indexing pages lately. Also, if you get a chance, could you check the template on my talk page out to make sure it'll work? The bot (for the one day it was working and I had the template) seemed to ignore it. demize (t · c) 14:47, 13 January 2011 (UTC)
- It should be indexing, the logs appear to indicate that it's working. Are you still having trouble with your indexing and/or template? It's worth checking the log for references to your page to see why certain things may or may not have happened. —Krellis (Talk) 18:57, 24 January 2011 (UTC)
- The bot is skipping my talk page in the logs:
- 00:26:30 27 January 2011: No change, skipping User talk:MC10/Archive index HBCAI
- However, my talk page (and its archives) have changed. Can you check what's wrong with my template? Thanks. —mc10 (t/c) 19:15, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
- Yeah, it skipped mine last time it ran as well, and the first time it ran on my talk page/archives it added threads that were long gone to the index (and hasn't updated the index since). Also, I'm amazed I missed these replies, I have your talk page watchlisted... demize (t · c) 17:50, 5 February 2011 (UTC)
- Usually a kick of the bot's cache will fix this type of issue, so I've gone ahead and nuked its cache and watchlist. The next run will probably take a while, but hopefully will clear up any issues like this. —Krellis (Talk) 14:26, 7 February 2011 (UTC)
- It's still skipping my archives, although I've definitely had messages:
- 00:23:33 08 April 2011: No change, skipping User talk:MC10/Archive index HBCAI
- Any idea why? —mc10 (t/c) 03:05, 8 April 2011 (UTC)

Cannot get bot to index more than the talk page...
Please observe code at http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:Posttraumatic_stress_disorder&action=edit - after many attempts I admit defeat. I cannot see how to get the bot to index ALL the index pages. I THINK I'm very carefully following the instructions - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:HBC_Archive_Indexerbot#Instructions - but the results I'm getting - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Posttraumatic_stress_disorder/Archive_index - say otherwise. Any help offered would be much appreciated!

Interesting interaction with Mizabot?
Hi and thanks for the Archive Indexerbot! I was looking today at Talk:Autism/Archive_index and found a discussion "Symptoms" that was listed as being both on the current Talk page and Archive 12. The index said "Report generated at 12:34, 22 April 2011 (UTC) by HBCAI." The threads were added to the index by Mizabot I at 2:05 am and deleted from the main talk page at 2:06. that same day. I'm surprised that it showed both pages as the location of the discussion. You may want to look more closely at the caching system to see if there's a bug revealed by this border case. Thanks again!
