Administrators' newsletter – June 2017
News and updates for administrators from the past month (May 2017).
- Doug Bell • Dennis Brown • Clpo13 • ONUnicorn
- ThaddeusB • Yandman • Bjarki S • OldakQuill • Shyam • Jondel • Worm That Turned
- An RfC proposing an off-wiki LTA database has been closed. The proposal was broadly supported, with further discussion required regarding what to do with the existing LTA database and defining access requirements. Such a tool/database formed part of the Community health initiative's successful grant proposal.
- Some clarifications have been made to the community banning and unblocking policies that effectively sync them with current practice. Specifically, the community has reached a consensus that when blocking a user at WP:AN or WP:ANI, it is considered a "community sanction", and administrators cannot unblock unilaterally if the user has not successfully appealed the sanction to the community.
- An RfC regarding the bot policy has closed with changes to the section describing restrictions on cosmetic changes.
- Users will soon be able to blacklist specific users from sending them notifications.
- Following the 2017 elections, the new members of the Board of Trustees include Raystorm, Pundit and Doc James. They will serve three-year terms.
Possible block evasion
Hi, KrakatoaKatie. Aliceassandri (talk · contribs) appears to be a reincarnation of Inthepalace2017 (talk · contribs). I've asked at the user's talk page about an association, to no response. Cheers, 2601:188:180:11F0:C9EE:FA43:6CD9:3888 (talk) 11:23, 1 June 2017 (UTC)
- That's fine - if you read the notice on their talk page, you'll see it was a username block and they are free to create another account. Katietalk 18:16, 1 June 2017 (UTC)
- My bad, KrakatoaKatie--this is an error I sometimes make. But the user and related articles need to be watched for promotional bias. Thank you, 2601:188:180:11F0:65F5:930C:B0B2:CD63 (talk) 15:48, 3 June 2017 (UTC)
Hi, I am not trying to promote anything for my own interest! How can I avoid being blocked? I am a volunteer trying to improve informations about a cultural event!!! Please don't erase my work. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Aliceassandri (talk • contribs) 12:21, 1 June 2017 (UTC)
- @Aliceassandri: It's okay if you're the same user as the one I blocked above, as long as you follow the guidelines listed for conflicts of interest. That account was blocked because of its username, because we do not allow role accounts by organizations of any kind. If you have questions, the Teahouse is thataway. Welcome to Wikipedia! :-) Katietalk 18:16, 1 June 2017 (UTC)
Thank you :@KrakatoaKatie:, I will study carefully and I will surly need your help. Have a nice day :)

Léon-Victor Solon (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) Hello Katie! Can you please take care of this massive copy vio at here? The text is from Gregory. I found this using copy patrol but didn't rollback everything as the editor had edited after it. I asked around and was directed to remove the formatted quote because it was too large, so I did. I'm not sure how many revisions would have to be taken off though. Thank you, d.g. L3X1 (distænt write) )evidence( 23:31, 8 June 2017 (UTC)

Ikleboy-Dinglebat500 relations.
Two blocked users you probably won't have heard of, but I'm contacting you to say you should ban them both from editing as Ikleboy was a vandalism-only account, and Dinglebat500 created Ikleboy, and this is of course sockpuppetry. You, as a CheckUser, should go and investigate and ban them both from editing, Ikleboy for being a sockpuppet, Dinglebat500 for creating it. Thanks, SamRathbone (talk) 11:47, 21 June 2017 (UTC)

Jbuffkin + Nmwalsh
I've noticed something rather interesting. Obiranp (talk · contribs · count), a sock from this group, worked on Draft:Zahroof Valves, and Doricas (talk · contribs · count) created a sandbox version, too. Turns out that Silverado60 (talk · contribs · count), a blocked sock of Nmwalsh (talk · contribs · count) (an indeffed sockpuppeteer and admitted paid editor) made another sandbox that looks quite similar to Doricas'. I am curious whether there is a) any connection between these two groups and b) whether we should merge the cases. Please forgive me if this late-night rambling is without substance. Also pinging Ponyo, who's dealt with Jbuffkin before. Thanks, GABgab 03:03, 25 June 2017 (UTC)
- @GAB: The Nmwalsh group is stale, so I don't have anything to compare to. The connection will have to be behavioral, but I agree that those sandboxes are a little too similar to be a coincidence. I can tell you that the deleted draft is substantially the same as the sandboxes, so there's that as well. Maybe a clerk note on both archived cases for future reference would be the best way to proceed until another bad penny turns up. (If we can do that, that is.) Katietalk 21:47, 25 June 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks, I figured it was a longshot. I know it's frowned upon to edit the archives, and I've made that mistake, but... you never know when someone may be in a WP:IAR mood. Thanks again, GABgab 21:49, 25 June 2017 (UTC)
Vaseline (shortened) re-send
Greetings. If you noticed the first ping before I deleted and rewrote, my bad, please read on. Please note that on 11 April, Messirulez made 2 separate edits @ 13:40, 15:45, 15:48, and 18:03. Vaseline made 2 edits @22:16 and on 22 June @ 22:27. Both users are fast. The simultaneous edits between 13:44 and 13:47 could all have been done by one editor with the skills and speed displayed by both users. Formally, I'm also asking if you compared the diffs from Vaseline's Talk page. After including them (which I ought to have done at the start), I thought the language, style, and content similarity was the strongest evidence. If you didn't compare, please do. Tapered (talk) 06:29, 27 June 2017 (UTC)
- (talk page watcher) @Tapered: Just as an FYI, you don't need to ping editors on their own talk pages as they will receive a notification of new messages regardless. Cheers! Amaury (talk | contribs) 03:09, 27 June 2017 (UTC)

Rollback
Hi Katie, I am writing you to request rollback permission. I saw your name on the list of admins willing to consider rollback requests and thought I’d ask you because I recall interacting with you in the past regarding IP vandalism [1] and I also recall you were the admin who blocked a user I reported to wp:spi. [2] I spend a fair amount of time cleaning up vandalism and it seems having rollback might help. Thank you in advance for considering my request. --DynaGirl (talk) 15:04, 26 June 2017 (UTC)

WikiCup 2017 July newsletter
The third round of the competition has finished in a flurry of last minute activity, with 288 points being required to qualify for round 4. It was a hotly competitive round with all but four of the contestants exceeding the 106 points that was necessary to proceed to round 4 last year. Coemgenus and Freikorp tied on 288, and both have been allowed to proceed, so round 4 now has one pool of eight competitors and one of nine.
Round 3 saw the achievement of a 26-topic Featured topic by MPJ-DK as well as 5 featured lists and 13 featured articles. PanagiotisZois and SounderBruce achieved their first ever featured articles. Carbrera led the GA score with 10, Tachs achieved 17 DYKs and MBlaze Lightning 10 In the news items. There were 167 DYKs, 93 GARs and 82 GAs overall, this last figure being higher than the number of GAs in round 2, when twice as many people were taking part. Even though contestants performed more GARs than they achieved GAs, there was still some frustration at the length of time taken to get articles reviewed.
As we start round 4, we say goodbye to the fifteen or so competitors who didn't quite make it; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them (some people have fallen foul of this rule and the points have been removed).
If you are concerned that your nomination, whether it be for a good article, a featured process, or anything else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! - A newly revamped database report can help identify users who may be eligible to be autopatrolled.
- A potentially compromised account from 2001–2002 attempted to request resysop. Please practice appropriate account security by using a unique password for Wikipedia, and consider enabling two-factor authentication. Currently around 17% of admins have enabled 2FA, up from 16% in February 2017.
- Did you know: On 29 June 2017, there were 1,261 administrators on the English Wikipedia – the exact number of administrators as there were ten years ago on 29 June 2007. Since that time, the English Wikipedia has grown from 1.85 million articles to over 5.43 million.

A question
Good evening Katie. I've got a quick question regarding protection. When there's an edit war, like what's currently going on at Dark Water (Doctor Who), is full protection the way to go (for 3 days or so)? I ask this because there is currently a request on RFPP, and I didn't want to act incorrectly. Anarchyte (work | talk) 09:45, 10 July 2017 (UTC)
- @Anarchyte: A full lock is appropriate here, or you can punt it to AN3. Neither has crossed 3RR yet and there's an egregious PA from one to the other (which I'm about to warn for), so I'd go ahead and do full protection for three or four days. Katietalk 10:06, 10 July 2017 (UTC)

Hurricane Electric IPv6
Hi, I have Hurricane Electric as a free 6in4 service. I saw that you have blocked a range which includes my IP range. Blocking 6in4 is policy? Greetings, Tgeorgescu (talk) 23:10, 20 July 2017 (UTC)
- @Tgeorgescu: No, but blocking tunnel brokers is, because it anonymizes your traffic. It does the same thing that a colocation webhost does. Using a tunnel broker is a choice you make, not a necessity. If you have an extraordinary need for using a proxy like this, you can apply for an IPBE. Katietalk 01:11, 21 July 2017 (UTC)
- Actually, HE tunnels stick with the user, and are thus persistent -- unlike my primary connection that changes IPs roughly yearly, secondary that changes once per two days, and phone which can't stay on for more than a few hours. Thus, you can know it's me or someone from my house. Thanks for the unblock! -KiloByte (talk) 14:56, 22 July 2017 (UTC)

Sockpuppet investigations/Deucalionite:
Hi. The result was " Unrelated to the archived evidence for Deucalonite – different IPs, different devices, different UAs". However I still think Othon I is a sock of Deucalionite. Othon I account was created just two weeks after a sock of Deucalionite was blocked. The same interests (Byzantine topic, Greeks in Albania), persistent accuses for "Albanian POV-pushing" (Othon I commented on SPI page and there they used the phrases " your co-national have been vandalising and fluctuating most of the pages with Albanian POV pushing" and "Please refrain from your POV pushing and you wont me reverting Albanian related articles", persistence that Arvanites have nothing to do with Albanians (they are of Albanian origin and Greek identity) and so on. Othon I and Theban Halberd (a confirmed blocked sock) edited Fustanella article (15 and 8 edits respectively) and its talk page (11 and 10 edits respectively) in the same period of time (June 2016). The same with Simon Sinas article. Othon I edited it on 15 June 2016 [3]. Two days later Theban edited the same article [4]. Othon I edited Simon Sinas article on 18 September 2016 [5] and Theban two days later again [6]. They did massive changes there. Theban Halberd nominated Evangelos Zappas for GA status and Othon I has many changes on that article (15). The first edit of Othon on Evangelos Zappas article [7] came less than a week after the last edit of Theban there [8]. The same interests, the same pages, the same accuses. Deucalionite used multiple accounts in different places in the past [9]. Othon I knew I suspected the account is a sock [10] (since 10 April) and may have made their last edits with another IP (from another location). One confirmed location is New Jersey (it is written in one of previous reports of Deucalionite's socks). Is it allowed to initiate another SPI later or have an admin to give an opinion on this issue? Two other accounts (Effotamus and Byzantinas_tiger) were stale and I do not want to worry them. They are really similar to each other, however they are not disruptive editors. Ktrimi991 (talk) 16:52, 24 July 2017 (UTC)
- You can think all you want, but that doesn't change the technical evidence. The master is stale; the last confirmed sock and Othon I are editing from different continents. I am an admin, and I'm telling you that you need to drop the stick and move on. Katietalk 21:55, 24 July 2017 (UTC)
- Krrtrimi991 does not seem to understand that most of my edits and reverts were fixes on vandalism on articles of Greek benefactors and others mainly from users from the area of Western Balkans. All the links that he pasted here can reveal this clearly. For instance, he accused me about Simon Sinas, the sources cited in the article clearly state him of Greek origin and many users from Western Balkans are vandalising the article with mostly nonsense. Same for most of the articles that he accuse me that I have fixed them? It seems that I am a barrier against the against the agenda that he follows and he feels uncomfortable with me. Hopefully he will stop harassing me. Best Othon I (talk) 08:13, 25 July 2017 (UTC)

Vandalism after final warning
Since you know the story of the vandalism of this user, I'm just letting you know that he vandalized a page again after you gave him a final warning yesterday. In case you forgot what I am referring to:
*Uhmaa festa (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) – actions evidently indicate a vandalism-only account. To the blind eye, this may not seem like blatant vandalism, but it is. In MMA pages, he is purposely and incorrectly changing TKOs to knockouts and knockouts to TKOs. Again, to the blind eye this may seem to be more of a dispute than vandalism, but it is not. The edits are intentionally subtle to prevent being banned. TBMNY (talk) 23:29, 26 July 2017 (UTC)
The vandalism was on Derek Brunson, where he once again incorrectly changed a TKO to a KO. TBMNY (talk) 20:23, 27 July 2017 (UTC)
