Float around for awhile until you find something that tickles your fancy. One easy way to do this is to hit the random page button in the navigation bar to the left. There are also many great committees and groups that focus on particular jobs. My personal favorite stomping grounds are Wikipedia:Translation into English and Wikipedia:Cleanup for sloppy articles. Finally, the Wikimedia Foundation has several other wiki projects that you might enjoy.
There are a few crucial points to keep in mind when editing. Hi, Kragen. You don't have to nominate copyright violations on AfD. You can just mark them as copyright violations and post them on Wikipedia:Copyright problems. First, erase the page's content and enter {{copyvio|url=}}. Then just put in the url of the source after the equal sign. This will produce a template when you save it and you just follow the instructions it gives it. In some cases, the source doesn't have a web page. In that case, put your explanation where the url would go, but use bold around it (made with three apostrophes on both sides). Good work on catching the copyvio. The reason for the revert is that your edit was against the spirit, if not the exact letter, of current Wikipedia content guidelines. An article consisting of nothing but the test "No information" is functionally consistent to a blank article and confusing to a reader who was lead to expect an article with information based upon the blue link followed to reach the article. In short you were replacing a small problem (a marginally appropriate redirect) with a bigger problem (a completely nonfunctional article). --Allen3talk19:27, 18 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You added a "crappy" pronunciation of Ravenna (your word ;-) ) - tell me as I am not all that conversant with the IPA - does that pronunciation allow for a single "n" or a double "n"? Ravenna is pronounced as "ra-VEN-na" because double consonants are split between the two syllables in Italian...thanks!
Well, I stuck a ":" after the "n" to indicate that it's a geminate consonant. I don't have a keybinding for the triangular colon the IPA uses for geminate consonants (the ":" is clear enough, I think) and I'm not sure if there's a special IPA way to indicate that the second part of the geminate "n" belongs to the next syllable. I note that the gemination article uses doubled consonants instead of [:]. I think my crappy transcription is better than having no written pronunciation at all, but it would be nice if someone really expert at phonology were to look at it. For third-party readers, the above is a response to my reversion of your reversion. While it's true that I think that most editors I notified will agree with my logic, that's because I think your behavior — deleting good-faith and worthwhile contributions to articles about unquestionably notable mathematicians and computer scientists, written by other editors over a period of years, while speciously citing irrelevant meta pages to support the deletion — is unacceptable, bordering on vandalism; I wouldn't know how to go about finding editors who would support it! I have at least notified two users who supported the deletion of Erdős number categories in the past and who are still active, but it is true that I also expect them to agree with me.
I think your suggestion of a new thread at WT:MATH is probably a good one, and may do that tomorrow.
As a further comment, though, I see that one person that we both asked for their perspective thinks that what you did isn't unreasonable in this case, so maybe I'm mistaken. Hopefully we'll hear some other voices soon. Kragen Javier Sitaker (talk) 05:53, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
