Photo you took is on New Albion
[edit]Hello Kognos. I recently used your magnificent photo of the white Drake's Bay cliffs on New Albion and as a result, looked you up. I hope to move the article to WP:FA status and your photo will, I believe, assist in that. It certainly adds much to the article.
I also saw the post above this one about the deletion of your List of UK Admiralty Charts, 1967 which was also a quality piece of work. I'm glad to see it was not deleted; although, I am still uncertain as to its status. It seems to have been determined to move to Wikisource--but it is still on Wikipedia. I too wrote a list article that took much work and first checked with the Teahouse. Support was a somewhat on the high side of tepid. Finally, after many months, I decided to write it: Timeline of Francis Drake's circumnavigation. So, I've got a sense of the work you expended on the Charts article and can imagine the frustration you must have felt with a deletion proposal. I'm glad to see it retained. It is worthy. Again, thanks for taking the photo of and most kind regards, Hu Nhu (talk) 01:49, 17 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Hu Nhu: I'm glad you liked the photo, and thanks for your comments on the chart list. I have a couple of points about the New Albion article. The intro states that the accepted landing place is at Point Reyes, which is a not quite right - it is (as stated elsewhere) at Drake's Bay, which is part of the Point Reyes National Seashore. The discussion of the location does not adequately reference the most simple and obvious argument, that Francis Fletcher records the location as 38°N, with white cliffs resembling those on the south coast of England: and sure enough, at 38°N there is a bay with white cliffs. To be sure the cliffs are a pale sandstone, while the english cliffs are chalk, but the resemblance is close enough, and anyway there are no chalk cliffs on the west coast of N. America. This is discussed in detail in a separate article Drake in California, which could usefullly be merged into the New Albion one. I hope this is helpful. Kognos (talk) 14:52, 20 September 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks for the suggestions Kognos. They are excellent.
- @Hu Nhu: I'm back at Point Reyes National Seashore. You might be interested in some panoramas I've uploaded of the cliffs from the east (Panorama of Drakes Bay 05-08), for example:
