Positive discipline meta-study findings list format
Keith,
Thanks for all your help. Can you give me feedback on how I formatted the list on the Positive discipline page? ConflictScience (talk) 20:28, 19 November 2020 (UTC)
- Hello, sorry for delay I clicked the wrong button and had to clear-up my mess. The list looks OK though the bolding in the "Nonviolent parenting options meta-study" section could do with removing to make it easier to read. Keith D (talk) 23:20, 19 November 2020 (UTC)
- Thank you for looking at it. I was thinking the opposite about the bolding, but I will re-think that. Thanks again! ConflictScience (talk) 23:32, 19 November 2020 (UTC)
Note
Did you mean to indef 196.74.97.25 (talk · contribs · WHOIS). Dylsss(talk contribs) 16:22, 23 November 2020 (UTC)
- That was my intention. Though it probably will not be effective as the IP keeps changing addresses and making similar vandalism edits to video game articles. Keith D (talk) 16:58, 23 November 2020 (UTC)
- It was under my impression that IPs are not indefinitely blocked unless in specific circumstances of repeated disruption and the IP is static (school blocks, web hosts). According to WHOIS, this looks a consumer IP, so I was just surprised to see that it was blocked indefinitely. Dylsss(talk contribs) 00:09, 25 November 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks for information. I probably was not thinking about that at the time when I issued the block. Taking another look I should have specified a specific time limit on the block. I will change. Keith D (talk) 02:14, 25 November 2020 (UTC)

ArbCom 2020 Elections voter message
Middlehaven, Middlesbrough
I have just added a large Middlehaven section on Middlesbrough article. Please can you have a quick look to see if I have missed things off code or citation wise. Chocolateediter (talk) 16:30, 28 November 2020 (UTC)
User changing the access-dates on hundreds of articles
Hi Keith,
I saw that you reverted some of Amirkhosroo's edits changing of the access-dates to November 22, 2020 [3][4]. Despite being reverted by multiple editors, being warned to not misleadingly change the access dates on their talk page [5][6], being told to provide edit summaries for their changes, they are still continuing to mass change the access dates on least 75+ other articles just last night. Some1 (talk) 14:07, 30 November 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks. Will have a look later. Keith D (talk) 14:17, 30 November 2020 (UTC)
- Thank you; I'm not sure what the motivation is for the editor to change the access-dates on hundreds of articles to November 22, 2020, all within a span of seconds and minutes and in spurts on different days (since they don't respond to talk page comments). I can only guess that maybe they're trying to game the system and get the minimum requirements needed to edit WP:ECP-locked articles. But I don't know. Some1 (talk) 14:45, 30 November 2020 (UTC)
- I have looked through the user's contributions and reverted the ones that have not already been reverted for this type of change. The others appear to be random wikilinks, though initially they were adding references, though one of these was reverted so may be the references need checking by someone who knows about the subject and could quickly validate them. They appear to be all about criminal activity of some form. Keith D (talk) 16:45, 30 November 2020 (UTC)
- On the point of gaming the system, if this is the case then it could be that the WP:ECP calculation needs changing to not count reverted edits. It would be useful to be able to watch a user's activity, probably need to be an admin only thing. Keith D (talk) 17:01, 30 November 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks for looking through those. The user just made another batch of bot-like edits again, exactly 50 edits in 2 minutes. Most are wikilinks but some are changing the access-dates to '2020-11-22', this time not being spelled out. Some1 (talk) 06:59, 2 December 2020 (UTC)
- I have reverted the accessdate changes and given them a 2 day block for disruptive editing. Suggesting they use edit summary or respond on their talk page. Keith D (talk) 12:38, 2 December 2020 (UTC)

Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 1 December. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 2 December. It will be on all wikis from 3 December (calendar).
Future changes
- The iOS Wikipedia app will show readers more of the article history. They can see new updates and easier see how the article has changed over time. This is an experiment. It will first be shown only to some iOS app users as a test. [7][8]
- The Wiki Replicas can be used for SQL queries. You can use Quarry, PAWS or other ways to do this. To make the Wiki Replicas stable there will be two changes. Cross-database
JOINS
will no longer work. You can also only query a database if you connect to it directly. This will happen in February 2021. If you think this affects you and you need help you can post on Phabricator or on Wikitech. [9]

National Hand Touch Football League

Extended block
Can you please permanently block this guy: User:Amirkhosroo
I have reverted as many of his vandal edits as I can but I think there are a few more that I was unable to. There are still some edits of his that slipped through the net I think, any chance you can perm ban and revert all his edits please? It's pretty clear when he returns after the 2 day block he'll just continue to disrupt and vandal Wikipedia. Thanks. Inexpiable (talk) 18:38, 2 December 2020 (UTC)
- I have looked through their edits and it looks as though all of them have been reverted by several people. I have also changed the block to indefinite because of the speed and concerns over using some sort of unregistered BOT. There are thoughts that they may be gaming the system for some reason. Keith D (talk) 18:55, 2 December 2020 (UTC)
Piped links
See Wikipedia:Piped link, its not appropriate to display the "City of" in text since the article says its in the Leeds district the "City of" natural disambiguator isn't needed and its more likely if anything to cause confusion since people may think it refers to the settlement. Crouch, Swale (talk) 17:19, 6 December 2020 (UTC)
- That is the way that we normally do in the City of .... links rather than display just the settlement name which is just confusing. You could use City of Leeds Metropolitan County and drop the word district. Keith D (talk) 17:33, 6 December 2020 (UTC)
- "Leeds" district is the simplest form rather than "City of Leeds Metropolitan County" and the OS just uses "Leeds" with "Leeds District" being an alternative. Similar to the fact that you can use [[railway station|station]] when the context is clear we don't need the natural disambiguation in the prose which is more confusing an unnecessary. Draft article
Hi there, hope you are well. I have been drafting a new article and have spent a good amount of time on it - Draft:RAF Lakenheath near nuclear disasters. I was hoping to be able to get someone to review it for me. I noticed that you've done a couple of edits on the list of military nuclear accidents page, so I thought the topic area of my article (two Broken Arrow nuclear incidents) might be of interest to you. If you could review it for me would be immensely grateful. Snugglewasp (talk) 16:58, 8 December 2020 (UTC)
- @Snugglewasp: I have had a look over the article. Comments on the read through.
- The lead should cover material in the body of the article and as such the references should appear there rather than in the lead.
- May be could try and rejig the first couple of sentences to get RAF Lakenheath near the start of first sentence.
- In the first section, probably need to move the image down towards the end of the section to prevent text sandwich between the image and the infobox. Or may be move the second infobox down to the relevant section.
- The first reference could do with a more reliable source rather than YouTube.
- Reference 5 could do with some detail filling in.
- The dates could be in the same format throughout, probably day first as UK article.
- I have made a few formatting changes while looking through. I hope that the above comments are useful to you. Keith D (talk) 02:01, 9 December 2020 (UTC)

Help needed, please?
Hi Keith. Due to past intimidation by people-who-may-not-be-misogynists-but-nevertheless-seem-to-troll-only-my-female-biographies, I would appreciate it if you could please kindly look over my latest female biog before I publish it. I am asking you because as you know, I don't always agree with what you say but you are hard-liner enough for your corrections to protect the article from hostile editing as soon as it is published. Without this sort of beforehand check, I am reluctant to publish any more female biographies. I am also asking you because this is a Yorkshire-based article, which I believe is, broadly speaking, on your patch.
The last assault targeted the living subject of the biography who was an artist approx 70 years old and had never done anything to deserve that. Since that happened I have not been able to edit that article because my edits just get reverted. One editor on the article's talk page seemed to think that the culling of most of the article was some sort of funny joke. Therefore, because the article has been so drastically reduced, I have had to send out copies of my userfied and updated full version of the article to the galleries and authorities who are involved with the artist's work. An employee of the Royal Academy, for example, was shocked at the treatment that this artist has received on Wikipedia, and very grateful to receive the copy of my userfied version.
The artist subject of my current unpublished article is dead and cannot be hurt, but still deserves a normal level of respect and recognition for her work, so this is why I am asking for the article to be checked before publishing. I should add that I am in the process of purchasing a number of bmd certificates to confirm relationships, although much of that is already confirmed via the usual third-party authoritative sources in the article. Thank you. Storye book (talk) 17:20, 16 December 2020 (UTC)
- Hello, looks OK to me. I have made some minor formatting changes mainly for consistency and MOS type changes. The use of World War I/II is usually avoided in British articles which tend to prefer the First/Second World War as that is more usual in British English. The other comment on the formatting would be the punctuation placement before quotes which would go against WP:LQ in some cases. Keith D (talk) 01:17, 17 December 2020 (UTC)
- Thank you very much for that, Keith, much appreciated. Thank you for your edits, and I shall see to the other points that you raised. I have realised that I must also add the paywall barrier symbols to some of the sources. With luck, the article should be published today. Cheers. Storye book (talk) 09:46, 17 December 2020 (UTC)
- The article Hilda Annetta Walker is now published. Thank you again for your help with that. Storye book (talk) 11:59, 17 December 2020 (UTC)
- I'm really sorry to have to keep bothering you on this subject, but I don't know where else to turn. Please look at the article and talk page. It's happening again. It doesn't happen to the biographies of men that I create. I have had to revert twice and I am not permitted to revert again. I have requested discussion, but as of this moment, no discussion has happened. Please arbitrate? Thank you. Storye book (talk) 21:35, 17 December 2020 (UTC)
Hallo Keith, I noticed your edit ... I must say that I have doubts about this, even though it's mentioned in the thesis ("A proficient hockey player at Halliwick, the girls boarding school she and Beatrice attended in Yorkshire,", and a photo caption of "Halliwick School Reunion, 1895; the Elmet Team, with Annette, Beatrice and Ethel Kitson and other cricketers. (C. M-S.)"). Googling finds absolutely no mention of this school: there's a Halliwick School for Crippled Girls in London, there's Halliwick Manor in Middlesex, but a girls boarding school of 1895 would not have vanished without leaving a trace. I suspect that the thesis author misread the caption on the photo, or misremembered something. I really doubt that this school existed. But I'm trying to have a Wikibreak so will now log off. PamD 09:23, 18 December 2020 (UTC)
- From digging around it was probably Halliwick Manor School, New Southgate that was the school. Possibly Halliwick manor house mentioned in the New Southgate article. Keith D (talk) 12:19, 18 December 2020 (UTC)
Quit beating me to the punch
I can't count the number of times I've opened a page to fix the cite date error, only to press save and be told that you've already fixed it. Thanks for working hard on those errors; it's a pretty tedious job. kennethaw88 • talk 16:43, 18 December 2020 (UTC)
- Probably because changes to the category are on my watchlist - though the changes do not always trigger a watchlist entry for some reason. Thanks for all the work you do on the date errors – it is coming down slowly. Keith D (talk) 16:48, 18 December 2020 (UTC)

Future changes
- You can propose and discuss what technical improvements should be done for geographic information. This could be coordinates, maps or other related things.
- Some wikis use LanguageConverter to switch between writing systems or variants of a language. This can only be done for the entire page. There will be a
<langconvert>
tag that can convert a piece of text on a page. [16] - Oversighters and stewards can hide entries in Special:AbuseLog. They can soon hide multiple entries at once using checkboxes. This works like hiding normal edits. It will happen in early January. [17]

Promo or legit user?
Dear Keith, I am sorry to bother you but could you please have a look at this user's edits? I am sure that they would argue that they are just sharing information but I am concerned that they may also be here to promote a particular walking app. I am neither an admin nor all that experienced in this field but it does strike me that there are a LOT of walking apps and sites which could be in ELs – I know that we had, perhaps similarly, to fend off a rash of books being added to the Coast to Coast Walk article in the past. What do you think? If you don't think it needs admin action then fine: I will just peaceably let them chug on and only argue in articles to which I have a commitment. Cheers DBaK (talk) 12:30, 5 January 2021 (UTC)
- Hello, I do not think that they are doing anything too concerning just using information from a specific source. Though I think that they should not be adding an external link to the article if they have already added a reference using the same source. The one I looked at they have added the site as a reference that does not actually support the length given as they have got the metric/imperial conversion wrong. May be you could ask as Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard to see if it is considered a reliable source. Keith D (talk) 12:52, 5 January 2021 (UTC)

Recent changes
- You can choose to be reminded when you have not added an edit summary. This can be done in your preferences. This could conflict with the CAPTCHA. This has now been fixed. [19]
- You can link to specific log entries. You can get these links for example by clicking the timestamps in the log. Until now, such links to private log entries showed no entry even if you had permission to view private log entries. The links now show the entry. [20]
- Admins can use the abuse filter tool to automatically prevent bad edits. Three changes happened last week:
- The filter editing interface now shows syntax errors while you type. This is similar to JavaScript pages. It also shows a warning for regular expressions that match the empty string. New warnings will be added later. [21]
- Oversighters can now hide multiple filter log entries at once using checkboxes on Special:AbuseLog. This is how the usual revision deletion works. [22]
- When a filter matches too many actions after it has been changed it is "throttled". The most powerful actions are disabled. This is to avoid many editors getting blocked when an administrator made a mistake. The administrator will now get a notification about this "throttle".
- There is a new tool to build new skins. You can also see existing skins. You can give feedback. [23]
- Bots using the API no longer watch pages automatically based on account preferences. Setting the
watchlist
towatch
will still work. This is to reduce the size of the watchlist data in the database. [24] - Scribunto's file metadata now includes length. [25]
- CSS and JavaScript code pages now have link anchors to line numbers. You can use wikilinks like w:en:MediaWiki:Common.js#L-50. [26]
- There was a new version of MediaWiki last week. You can read a detailed log of all 763 changes. Most of them are very small and will not affect you.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 12 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 13 January. It will be on all wikis from 14 January (calendar).

revert of ignore-err=
Hi, re this revert: which errors does it suppress? Whether I view the old or new versions, they both show exactly the same two harv warnings - and they are on the first two entries (one {{cite book}}
and one {{cite web}}
) in the Bibliography.
- Harv warning: There is no link pointing to this citation. The anchor is named CITEREFThomas,_Cliff2002.
- Harv warning: There is no link pointing to this citation. The anchor is named CITEREFGrace2015.
and these do not relate to any of the {{sfn}}
concerned. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 20:31, 17 January 2021 (UTC)
- The parameter removes the error
- "NHLE 2000. sfn error: no target: CITEREFNHLE2000 (help)"
- which creates a valid link.
- The templates have since been modified to not place the

Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 19 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 20 January. It will be on all wikis from 21 January (calendar).
Future changes
- The Growth team plans to add features to get more visitors to edit to more Wikipedias. You can help translating the interface.
- You will be able to read but not to edit Wikimedia Commons for a short time on 26 January at 07:00 (UTC). [27]
- MassMessage posts could be automatically timestamped in the future. This is because MassMessage senders can now send pages using MassMessage. Pages are more difficult to sign. If there are times when a MassMessage post should not be timestamped you can let the developers know.

Hello Keith D. Happy to connect. I believe you might have made an edit to the draft article that I recently resubmitted, but I don’t see any changes. Did I miss something? If so, please feel free to let me know. I'm still new to Wikipedia. I realize that you are an experienced editor, so I would appreciate any feedback you could give me if or when you have a moment. Wikipedia is fascinating to me and I would love to learn more about the editing process. I look forward to your response. Thanks for your time. Phoenix7119 (talk) 01:05, 19 January 2021 (UTC)
- Hello, the changes were to references 7 & 9 where I removed the square brackets from the
|date=
field. The change removes the red error messages "Check date values in: |date= (help)". You can view the changes via the history tab as per this link. - At a quick scan of the article there are several embedded external links which need to be removed, possibly made in to references. Book and magazine titles are usually given in italic text. Headings should be in sentence case. Keith D (talk) 01:21, 19 January 2021 (UTC)
Hi. Thanks so much for removing the square brackets. I viewed those changes via the history tab. Per your suggestions, I removed the embedded external links, made sure the references were in place, italicized all book and magazine titles, corrected all headings to reflect sentence case and made a few additional changes as well. Your suggestions were invaluable. Thanks again. And thank you for your time. Phoenix7119 (talk) 04:10, 19 January 2021 (UTC)
List of cities
I don't understand why my edits were reverted. It was factually correct, the dates I added, and the remaining 'time immemorial' cities pre-date Wells, with uncertain dates of their founding as sees. If my edits are to be reverted, then the Durham date should be reverted to 'time immemorial' too. 2.25.196.115 (talk) 12:58, 20 January 2021 (UTC)

Disruptive editing of ItsLife1
Hi user Keith D,
ItsLife1 inserted the following statement to the oromo people page:
“Certain non-Shewan Oromo had been branded by Naftenyans as outsiders and called the derogatory term "galla", meaning "savage", "slave", or "enemy," the term was originally used by Somalis to refer to non-Somalis (as a term for foreigner or outsider) and applied to non-Muslims (as a term for infidels).[44] The term “Galla” was also used by Northern Oromo clans against Southern Oromo clans for having different social class characteristics from each other. Tigrayans were also known for calling Amhara people “galla” or “half-galla” because Amhara majority regions of that time period (mostly in modern day Amhara Region) in Northern Ethiopia were ruled over by Northern Oromo clans such as the Yejju Oromo clan and the Wollo Oromo clan with the Amharas being subjects of the Oromo rulers,[45] especially during the Zemena Mesafint in which the Yejju Oromo ruled over the Northern Ethiopian portion of Ethiopian Empire. During the 17th century, the Yejju dynasty (more specifically, the Warasek dynasty) ruled much of the Ethiopian Empire during the Zemene Mesafint or "Era of Princes", changing the language in the court of Gondar (in modern day Amhara Region) to the Oromo language.”
- He claimed “ galla term originally used by Somali and northern oromo clans used against southern oromo clans.” I have gone through Both sources never mentioned. Deliberately distorting statement is a serious an offence. All this statement is made-up story not validating
Please check sock puppet account and other account pushing the same thing agenda and intervene the statement made on that page.

Problems
- IPv6 addresses were written in lowercase letters in diffs. This caused dead links since Special:Contributions only accepted uppercase letters for the IPs. This has been fixed. [31]
Changes later this week
- You can soon use Wikidata to link to pages on the multilingual Wikisource. [32]
- Often editors use a "non-breaking space" to make a gap between two items when reading but still show them together. This can be used to avoid a line break. You will now be able to add new ones via the special character tool in the 2010, 2017, and visual editors. The character will be shown in the visual editor as a space with a grey background. [33][34]
- Wikis use abuse filters to stop bad edits being made. Filter maintainers can now use syntax like
1.2.3.4 - 1.2.3.55
as well as the1.2.3.4/27
syntax for IP ranges. [35] - The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 2 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 3 February. It will be on all wikis from 4 February (calendar).
Future changes
- Minerva is the skin Wikimedia wikis use for mobile traffic. When a page is protected and you can't edit it you can normally read the source wikicode. This doesn't work on Minerva on mobile devices. This is being fixed. Some text might overlap. This is because your community needs to update MediaWiki:Protectedpagetext to work on mobile. You can read more. [36][37]
- Cloud VPS and Toolforge will change the IP address they use to contact the wikis. The new IP address will be
185.15.56.1
. This will happen on February 8. You can read more.

Disruptive bot
Hello. I've been monitoring some pages and this account: User:Haseebshoaibakthar is definitely a bot that has been making a lot of strange edits, some of which are breaking references and causing disruption. I have a strong feeling it could be the same person behind this account that you previously banned: User:Amirkhosroo, some of the articles being edited by this new bot are the same ones that account was editing. Wondering if you could please ban it? Another user has already reported him and he is disrupting a lot of templates within pages. The edit log clearly shows it is a bot given how quick the edits are made. Thanks. Inexpiable (talk) 13:25, 3 February 2021 (UTC)
- The edits I have looked at do not appear to be disruptive to warrant a ban. They are just hyphenating
|accessdate=
, removing spaces and fixing reference names. Though it does look like they are editing fast for a normal manual editor. Can you point me at the report of the user? Keith D (talk) 13:41, 3 February 2021 (UTC)- Reported here [38] and here [39] examples of disruptive editing are listed by the reporter in the second link. Inexpiable (talk) 15:51, 3 February 2021 (UTC)

Fixed cite dates
Hi, you have fixed a lot of my cite dates, thank you! I generally use the automatic cite inserter, and sometimes manually but I am not sure how to fix them when the date is only for the month. If you would be kind enough to give me some input on how to structure those properly, I could save you some clean-up work. :) DrGvago (talk) 20:14, 7 February 2021 (UTC)
- Hello, when the dates are just for a month and year then you have to spell out the month and place it before the year.
|date=January 2021
is the only way to do it unless you are using short months when it is|date=Jan 2021
but I tend to try and avoid them. Hope that helps. Keith D (talk) 20:21, 7 February 2021 (UTC)- Thank you, I will give that a try. I appreciate the instruction. DrGvago (talk) 20:24, 7 February 2021 (UTC)

- The Wikipedia app for Android now has watchlists and talk pages in the app. [41]
Changes later this week
- You can see edits to chosen pages on Special:Watchlist. You can add pages to your watchlist on every wiki you like. The GlobalWatchlist extension will come to Meta on 11 February. There you can see entries on watched pages on different wikis on the same page. The new watchlist will be found on Special:GlobalWatchlist on Meta. You can choose which wikis to watch and other preferences on Special:GlobalWatchlistSettings on Meta. You can watch up to five wikis. [42]

Future changes
- When admins protect pages the form will use the OOUI look. Special:Import will also get the new look. This will make them easier to use on mobile phones. [43][44]
- Some services will not work for a short period of time from 07:00 UTC on 17 February. There might be problems with new short links, new translations, new notifications, adding new items to your reading lists or recording email bounces. This is because of database maintenance. [45]
- Last week Tech News reported that the IP address Cloud VPS and Toolforge use to contact the wikis will change on 8 February. This is delayed. It will happen later instead. [46]

North Country Basketball Association
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:North_Country_Basketball_Association can my draft be edited? North Country Basketball (talk) 18:51, 19 February 2021 (UTC)
- Hello, Cannot see any problems with editing the article. Keith D (talk) 18:53, 19 February 2021 (UTC)
Cool thanks I would like to add it eventually if I can North Country Basketball (talk) 18:56, 19 February 2021 (UTC)
It just keeps getting taken down it is a real league that’s why I want to edit North Country Basketball (talk) 19:06, 19 February 2021 (UTC)
- Sorry I do not understand what you mean by "being taken down". As far as I can see you are the only person to edit that article to which you have made 4 edits. Once you are ready to go live with the article you can submit it for articles for creation process that will move it to main space rather than draft space. Though in its current form I do not think that the article will be accepted. You need to improve the references using reliable sources that are independent of the organisation in question. Keith D (talk) 19:17, 19 February 2021 (UTC)
Thanks it’s a real league in the DeKalb Park in New York I know I am not ready for a full article that’s why I wanted you to take a look at it North Country Basketball (talk) 19:21, 19 February 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for editing on it North Country Basketball (talk) 19:33, 19 February 2021 (UTC)
Can you also put a lock on it so when it’s ready for a full article some day it can be added North Country Basketball (talk) 19:38, 19 February 2021 (UTC)
- Sorry cannot lock article - anyone is free to edit it. Though it could be deleted if no edits have taken place in 6 months. Keith D (talk) 19:40, 19 February 2021 (UTC)
That’s what I don’t want to hear it being deleted how to not delete the article North Country Basketball (talk) 19:42, 19 February 2021 (UTC)
- While it is in draft space it will not be deleted unless there is no edits / progress to making it acceptable in 6 months. If it makes it to mainspace then if the topic is felt to be not notable then any editor is free to nominate it for deletion and it will be up to the community to decide to delete or keep the article.
