AWB: Continued Discussion/Follow-up by JustBerry

@BU Rob13: @Samwalton9: @Koavf: @Enterprisey: To those that have previously demonstrated concern (involved in the discussion above), in addition to the replacing Trump's article photos with the official photo (which BU Rob13 gave me the okay and perform per RfC consensus referenced at WP:BTR), I have performed a series of AWB edits from January 24, 2017 2:51-3:00 (see Special:Contributions/JustBerry). What do you think? --JustBerry (talk) 15:09, 24 January 2017 (UTC)

Samwalton9 mentioned that the edits look fine to him from "a quick glance." I'll wait for a few more replies before proceeding with making AWB edits. --JustBerry (talk) 15:28, 24 January 2017 (UTC)
Looks fine.~ Rob13Talk 15:51, 24 January 2017 (UTC)
@BU Rob13: Thanks. On IRC btw? Have a semi-lengthy technical thing I'm trying to figure out. --JustBerry (talk) 15:52, 24 January 2017 (UTC)

@BU Rob13: Ah, okay. --JustBerry (talk) 15:55, 24 January 2017 (UTC)

New Page Reviewer

Hello JustBerry. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers" user group, allowing you to review new pages and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or in some cases, tag them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is a vital function for policing the quality of the encylopedia, if you have not already done so, you must read the new tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the various deletion criteria. If you need more help or wish to discuss the process, please join or start a thread at page reviewer talk.

  • URGENT: Please consider helping get the huge backlog (around 15,000 pages) down to a manageable number of pages as soon as possible.
  • Be nice to new users - they are often not aware of doing anything wrong.
  • You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted - be formal and polite in your approach to them too, even if they are not.
  • Don't review a page if you are not sure what to do. Just leave it for another reviewer.
  • Remember that quality is quintessential to good patrolling. Take your time to patrol each article, there is no rush. Use the message feature and offer basic advice.

The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In case of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, the right can be revoked at any time by an administrator. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 10:48, 24 January 2017 (UTC)

@Kudpung: Thanks again! I actually archived the initial notice you left on my talk page (identical to this one). Should I leave this up? Or, did you happen to give me another one because you thought you had forgotten before? --JustBerry (talk) 01:30, 25 January 2017 (UTC)
I was checking upon the recent additions to the user group and because I could not see the message on your talk page I thought the script had malfunctioned. Of course you can delete it. I do hope that you will be able to do some work on the huge backlog. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 01:56, 25 January 2017 (UTC)
@Kudpung: No rush to remove it, I just removed it before for organization purposes. As far as the backlog goes, though, I have certainly been chipping away at it. Are you on IRC? --JustBerry (talk) 01:58, 25 January 2017 (UTC)
I never use IRC except for testing it from time to time. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 02:04, 25 January 2017 (UTC)

Thanking me at WP:CHUS

I appreciate the wikilove, but can you please refrain from thanking me for (almost) every edit I make on WP:CHUS? It would greatly reduce the amount of redundant spam I get in my notifications. It also dilutes the weight of each "thank" you send me; one thank is better than fifty thanks. Thanks, —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 21:54, 27 January 2017 (UTC)

I suppose. The thanks was really to acknowledge my appreciation for renaming users that I had specifically checked over (not just random renames). --JustBerry (talk) 21:57, 27 January 2017 (UTC)

Message from Editorsproof

Hi, JustBerry.

WOWIE ZOWIE, WOWIE ZOWIE!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't believe you gave me a "Barnstar of Diligence"!!!!!!! That is so cool!!! Not to mention hilarious!!!

I needed BIG SMILES today, and I also really do appreciate the help you gave me along the bumpy road of trying to understand the intricacies of creating a WikiLand article!!!!!

Wishing you a superlative day! Editorsproof (talk) 18:22, 1 February 2017 (UTC)

@Editorsproof: My pleasure! Keep up the great work. --JustBerry (talk) 18:35, 1 February 2017 (UTC)

Question, and thanks

Just a question, could you please change my Editor of the Week thing to say WikiProject Equine, not the Horse racing one? Of my six GAs/one FA, only Naborr was a racehorse. The rest were show horses, their trainers, and the one major horse show. I sort of hate to ask, but I'm afraid if I changed it myself it'd look like I'm trying to say I did things I didn't. I do participate in the racing project, but not as much as the equine one (the horse racing project deals with only horse races, racehorses, people who train racehorses, and jockeys; the equine one deals with all other types of horse activity, breeds, gear, horses in the Olympics, etc.) Thanks for putting me in the Hall of Fame! I'm very excited about it! ☺😆😃😄 White Arabian Filly Neigh 23:09, 1 February 2017 (UTC)

@White Arabian Filly: Not a problem! I have made the change. You may need to purge the pages which display the infobox for the updated template to appear. --JustBerry (talk) 23:12, 1 February 2017 (UTC)

New Page Review - newsletter No.2

Hello JustBerry,
A HUGE backlog

We now have 806 New Page Reviewers!
Most of us requested the user right at PERM, expressing a wish to be able to do something about the huge backlog, but the chart on the right does not demonstrate any changes to the pre-user-right levels of October.

Hitting 17,000 soon

The backlog is still steadily growing at a rate of 150 a day or 4,650 a month. Only 20 reviews a day by each reviewer over the next few days would bring the backlog down to a managable level and the daily input can then be processed by each reviewer doing only 2 or 3 reviews a day - that's about 5 minutes work!
It didn't work in time to relax for the Xmas/New Year holidays. Let's see if we can achieve our goal before Easter, otherwise by Thanksgiving it will be closer to 70,000.

Second set of eyes

Remember that we are the only guardians of quality of new articles, we alone have to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged by non-Reviewer patrollers and that new authors are not being bitten.

Abuse

This is even more important and extra vigilance is required considering Orangemoody, and

  1. this very recent case of paid advertising by a Reviewer resulting in a community ban.
  2. this case in January of paid advertising by a Reviewer, also resulting in a community ban.
  3. This Reviewer is indefinitely blocked for sockpuppetry.

Coordinator election

Kudpung is stepping down after 6 years as unofficial coordinator of New Page Patrolling/Reviewing. There is enough work for two people and two coords are now required. Details are at NPR Coordinators; nominate someone or nominate yourself. Date for the actual suffrage will be published later.

why did u edit my last item, why do uedit everything i do? its nt over...yet — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bubblefett (talkcontribs)

@Bubblefett: Are you referring to this? After seeing your edit here, I am questioning your intentions, even though I do generally assume good faith in other editors. The previous edit was unreferenced, placed on a category page (rather than an article), and out of context. If you want to edit Wikipedia constructively, I am happy to help, but I'm not so convinced that that is the case, unfortunately. --JustBerry (talk) 15:18, 24 January 2017 (UTC)

Sterilized by cupcake

You think Sterilized by cupcake (talk · contribs) is Cynulliad? Flyer22 Reborn (talk) 01:51, 31 January 2017 (UTC)

@Flyer22 Reborn: Perhaps, but which diffs are you referring to specifically? Also, I have tagged one of the socks here per the rationale in my diff's edit summary (confirmation indicated at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Motivação/Archive). Other socks of that master seem to be already tagged. Analyzing the editor interaction between Sterilized by cupcake (talk · contribs) and Cynulliad in terms of the number of contributions made to mutually edited articles, though, the evidence doesn't seem overwhelming (although suggestive/suspicion-provoking). Any pairs of diffs you may have to demonstrate precise behavioral comparison would be helpful. Also, please be careful in wikilinking a user's userpage, as the linking can ping them. Please use Template:noping, Template:noping, etc. instead. I have already replaced this talk page section's heading and your initial message accordingly to remove any potential pings. --JustBerry (talk) 02:25, 31 January 2017 (UTC)
Looking at Sterilized by cupcake, it is highly likely that he is Cynulliad. I don't have any diff to point to in order to make a really strong case. I decided to ask your opinion. I don't see the pinging as a problem since it gives the editor a chance to defend himself, but I understand not wanting any unnecessary drama. Flyer22 Reborn (talk) 03:10, 31 January 2017 (UTC)
@Flyer22 Reborn: What specifically makes you think that this is highly likely (if not pairs of diffs)? To make a worthwhile SPI case, some analysis, whether that be through diffs or an alternate extensive examination at other characteristics/editing patterns, would be needed. As far as the ping goes, it's often best to not ping a user you highly suspect of socking (as you mentioned), as their creation of multiple socks in the past suggests their possible seeking of attention. In such cases, it's often best to WP:DENY. --JustBerry (talk) 03:13, 31 January 2017 (UTC)
I am very good at recognizing editing patterns, even when an editor tries to disguise their editing pattern. In this case, the editing pattern is the same. This is seen, for example, when comparing edits and edit summaries such as this and this one. The interests are the same, and this includes what Sterilized by cupcake states on his user page. And creation of the Sterilized by cupcake account came right after the Sheila Ki Jawani (talk · contribs) account was indefinitely blocked. As for pinging an editor I suspect as a sock, it's worked for me in the past because it trips the sock up in ways I can't begin to explain. All that stated, GeneralizationsAreBad has more experience with identifying this particular sock. So it would be good to get his opinion. Flyer22 Reborn (talk) 03:30, 31 January 2017 (UTC)
@Flyer22 Reborn: Sounds good. GAB seems to have seen this conversation (per their changing my recent tagging). I have left GAB a message here. Let's see what xe has to say without any further ado. --JustBerry (talk) 03:38, 31 January 2017 (UTC)
From what I'm seeing, there actually is a strong enough case to support the belief that Sterilized by cupcake is Cynulliad, but I'll leave this to GeneralizationsAreBad. And, yeah, I do think that the Cynulliad account should be blocked or at least tagged as a suspected sock. Cynulliad is clearly Cynulliad2 and so on. Flyer22 Reborn (talk) 04:01, 31 January 2017 (UTC)

@Flyer22 Reborn: Regarding the tagging, kindly see GAB's note here. Also, to clarify, Cynulliad is not CU-confirmed to Cynulliad2, but proven per behavioral analysis. --JustBerry (talk) 04:03, 31 January 2017 (UTC)

I disagree with him in this case since Cynulliad is the master account and is clearly Cynulliad2 and so on. It makes no sense to me to allow this account to remain unblocked. I know that the Cynulliad account is not CU-confirmed; this doesn't stop the fact that the account should be blocked. Flyer22 Reborn (talk) 04:12, 31 January 2017 (UTC)
@Flyer22 Reborn: In that case, you may want to consider reaching out to GeneralizationsAreBad directly. --JustBerry (talk) 04:13, 31 January 2017 (UTC)
Nah, GeneralizationsAreBad is aware of my feelings after having read this section. And it was Bbb23 who decided not to block the Cynulliad account. I could pursue having the account blocked, but I don't feel strongly about this sock to do so. Besides, I'm sure an administrator will block that account one day. Flyer22 Reborn (talk) 04:20, 31 January 2017 (UTC)

@bubblefett: how can you get sterilized by a cupcake?, and in the source it says a user was indefinatly blocked, what does that mean? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bubblefett (talkcontribs) 15:46, 1 February 2017 (UTC)

After I logged off two days ago, I saw that Neonorange and Anna Frodesiak also discussed this. Neonorange also easily recognized Cynulliad. Anna Frodesiak tried to give Cynulliad a chance to reform, but ultimately ended up indefinitely blocking the Sterilized by cupcake account. From now on, though, I will ignore Cynulliad when I see him...unless it's necessary not to ignore him. Flyer22 Reborn (talk) 21:54, 2 February 2017 (UTC)

A question

I was just wondering, I saw that my user page was deleted. For what reasons was it deleted? I would like to know so that I can improve it to Wikipedia's standards. Timeflow X (talk) 08:08, 1 February 2017 (UTC)

@Timeflow X: Your user page had been deleted for "misuse of Wikipedia as a web host" by RHaworth. I do not remember the exact content of your page. However, the article section "What may I have in my user pages?" may help address some of your questions. --JustBerry (talk) 18:45, 1 February 2017 (UTC)

I have unreviewed a page you curated

Thanks for reviewing Lindokuhle Modi, JustBerry.

Unfortunately Fabrictramp has just gone over this page again and unreviewed it. Their note is:

Fabrictramp | talk to me 21:50, 5 February 2017 (UTC)

@Fabrictramp: Wasn't there a CSD on the page? That's probably the circumstances under which I reviewed the page. --JustBerry (talk) 19:54, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
There was a CSD. The problem with marking it reviewed is the page becomes searchable on Google. Not a huge deal, just better to leave those as unreviewed.--Fabrictramp | talk to me 02:21, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
@Fabrictramp: By default, Twinkle marks CSD pages as reviewed. As a result, many other editors are doing this similarly. This may need to be a point of discussion at Twinkle's talk page. --JustBerry (talk) 02:35, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
Agreed. It's something of a pain in the butt when I use Twinkle. I'm sure it's a widespread issue. :( Cheers!--Fabrictramp | talk to me 17:22, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

Invitation.

Hello JustBerry,

I have noted, that you have contributed to the good Wikipedia article Courage, therefore, as a participant of the WikiProject Wikipedia Awards, I’m inviting you to have a look at the page Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Wikipedia Awards https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Wikipedia_Awards.

As this project currently regarded as semi-active, and not visited by many Wikipedians, it makes sense to invite Editors, who contributed right to the field, for which new Barnstar have been created.

The Editor Dennis Pietras offered the idea to create the Bravery Barnstar, and I did my best to help with design of this, as I think much needed Barnstar; thus if you will appreciate both, the idea and the design, please, let other Editors know about that by writing words of support. Regards.Chris Oxford (talk) 21:52, 12 February 2017 (UTC)

@Chris Oxford: Thanks for the invitation, even though the most recent edit I made to Courage seems to be a passing one. Speaking of awards, though, I have been involved in coordinating the Editor of the Week Award. Perhaps there might be an area where the two projects can collaborate? --JustBerry (talk) 02:31, 13 February 2017 (UTC)

@JustBerry That is very interesting idea, I think that it possible, and it will be good to know how do you see the ways of collaboration of these two projects. Regards, Chris Oxford.Chris Oxford (talk) 13:28, 13 February 2017 (UTC)

@Chris Oxford: Surely. I'll have to sleep on it, but certainly keep in touch! I can introduce you to the other project coordinators if you'd be interested in such exploring potential collaboration. --JustBerry (talk) 23:34, 13 February 2017 (UTC)

@ JustBerry Thank you very much for your willingness to introduce me to other coordinators of the Editor of the Week Award Project: in the abstract any joint efforts can bring positive results, but, usually someone who has been introduced with the purpose to benefit a project, should have the clear idea and plan how to do it, that is why I asked you how the collaboration, which you are offering, can work practically, because personally I can’t see the ways of the non theoretical realizations of this idea: these two projects pursue quite dissimilar goals and WikiProject Wikipedia Awards simply designed to offer idea/design of the Barnstars, which could be awarded to appreciate the contributions of Editors to the coverage of different subjects on Wikipedia. Thus, I simply can’t figure out exact answer on their question: “What idea do you want to offer to benefit both projects?” So, if someone of coordinators from the Editor of the Week Award Project will have a concrete actions plan, they are always welcome to let me know on my talk page. Regards, Chris Oxford.Chris Oxford (talk) 22:03, 15 February 2017 (UTC)

Still a MASSIVE backlog

We now have 806 New Page Reviewers but despite numerous appeals for help, the backlog has NOT been significantly reduced.
If you asked for the New Page Reviewer right, please consider investing a bit of time - every little helps preventing spam and trash entering the mainspace and Google when the 'NO_INDEX' tags expire.

  • A recent query shows that only 16% of administrators on the English Wikipedia have enabled two-factor authentication. If you haven't already enabled it please consider doing so.
  • Cookie blocks should be deployed to the English Wikipedia soon. This will extend the current autoblock system by setting a cookie for each block, which will then autoblock the user after they switch accounts under a new IP.

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a discussion on the backlog of unpatrolled files, consensus was found to create a new user right for autopatrolling file uploads. Implementation progress can be tracked on Phabricator.
  • The BLPPROD grandfather clause, which stated that unreferenced biographies of living persons were only eligible for proposed deletion if they were created after March 18, 2010, has been removed following an RfC.
  • An RfC has closed with consensus to allow proposed deletion of files. The implementation process is ongoing.
  • After an unsuccessful proposal to automatically grant IP block exemption, consensus was found to relax the criteria for granting the user right from needing it to wanting it.

Technical news

  • After a recent RfC, moved pages will soon be featured in a queue similar to Special:NewPagesFeed and require patrolling. Moves by administrators, page movers, and autopatrolled editors will be automatically marked as patrolled.
  • Cookie blocks have been deployed. This extends the current autoblock system by setting a cookie for each block, which will then autoblock the user if they switch accounts, even under a new IP.

Dispute Resolution Noticeboard Volunteer Roll Call

This is a volunteer roll call sent to you on behalf of the current Dispute Resolution Noticeboard Coordinator, Robert McClenon, and is being sent to you because you have listed yourself as a volunteer at DRN. If you remain interested in helping at DRN and are willing to actively do so by taking at least one case (and seeing it through) or helping with administrative matters at least once per calendar month, please add your name to the roll call list. Those who do not add their name on the roll call list will be removed from the principal volunteer list after May 31, 2017 unless the DRN Coordinator chooses to retain their name for the best interest of DRN or the encyclopedia. Individuals whose names are removed after May 31, 2017, should feel free to re-add their names to the principal volunteer list, but are respectfully requested not to do so unless they are willing to take part at DRN at least one time per month as noted above. No one is going to be monitoring to see if you live up to that commitment, but we respectfully ask that you either live up to it or remove your name from the principal volunteer list.

New Page Review - Newsletter No.4

Hello JustBerry,

Since rolling out the right in November, just 6 months ago, we now have 806 reviewers, but the backlog is still mysteriously growing fast. If every reviewer did just 55 reviews, the 22,000 backlog would be gone, in a flash, schwoop, just like that!

But do remember: Rather than speed, quality and depth of patrolling and the use of correct CSD criteria are essential to good reviewing. Do not over-tag. Make use of the message feature to let the creator know about your maintenance tags. See the tutorial again HERE. Get help HERE.

Stay up to date with recent new page developments and have your say, read THIS PAGE.

Backlog update:

  • The new page backlog is currently at 18,511 pages. We have worked hard to decrease from over 22,000, but more hard work is needed! Please consider reviewing even just a few pages a a day.
  • Some editors are committing to work specifically on patrolling new pages on 15 July. If you have not reviewed new pages in a while, this might be a good time to be involved. Please remember that quality of patrolling is more important than quantity, that the speedy deletion criteria should be followed strictly, and that ovetagging for minor issues should be avoided.

Technology update:

  • Several requests have been put into Phabractor to increase usability of the New Pages Feed and the Page Curation toolbar. For more details or to suggest improvements go to Wikipedia:Page Curation/Suggested improvements
  • The tutorial has been updated to include links to the following useful userscripts. If you were not aware of them, they could be useful in your efforts reviewing new pages:

Technical news

  • You will now get a notification when someone tries to log in to your account and fails. If they try from a device that has logged into your account before, you will be notified after five failed attempts. You can also set in your preferences to get an email when someone logs in to your account from a new device or IP address, which may be encouraged for admins and accounts with sensitive permissions.
  • Syntax highlighting is now available as a beta feature (more info). This may assist administrators and template editors when dealing with intricate syntax of high-risk templates and system messages.
  • In your notification preferences, you can now block specific users from pinging you. This functionality will soon be available for Special:EmailUser as well.

Arbitration

  • Applications for CheckUser and Oversight are being accepted by the Arbitration Committee until September 12. Community discussion of the candidates will begin on September 18.
