WikiCup 2010 October newsletter
The 2010 WikiCup is over! It has been a long journey, but what has been achieved is impressive: combined, participants have produced over seventy featured articles, over five hundred good articles, over fifty featured lists, over one thousand one hundred "did you know" entries, in addition to various other pieces of recognised content. A full list (which has yet to be updated to reflect the scores in the final round) can be found here. Perhaps more importantly, we have our winner! The 2010 WikiCup champion is Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), with an unbelievable 4220 points in the final round. Second place goes to TonyTheTiger (submissions), with 2260, and third to Casliber (submissions), with 560. Congratulations to our other four finalists – White Shadows (submissions), William S. Saturn (submissions), Staxringold (submissions) and ThinkBlue (submissions). Also, congratulations to Sasata (submissions), who withdrew from the competition with an impressive 2685 points earlier in this round.
Prizes will also be going to those who claimed the most points for different types of content in a single round. It was decided that the prizes would be awarded for those with the highest in a round, rather than overall, so that the finalists did not have an unfair advantage. Winning the featured article prize is Casliber (submissions), for five featured articles in round 4. Winning the good article prize is Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), for eighty-one good articles in round 5. Winning the featured list prize is Staxringold (submissions), for six featured lists in round 1. Winning the picture and sound award is Jujutacular (submissions), for four featured pictures in round 3. Winning the topic award is Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), for forty-seven articles in various good topics in round 5. Winning the "did you know" award is TonyTheTiger (submissions), for over one hundred did you knows is round 5. Finally, winning the in the news award is Candlewicke (submissions), for nineteen articles in the news in round three.
The WikiCup has faced criticism in the last month – hopefully, we will take something positive from it and create a better contest for next year. Like Wikipedia itself, the Cup is a work in progress, and ideas for how it should work are more than welcome on the WikiCup talk page and on the scoring talk page. Also, people are more than welcome to sign up for next year's competition on the signup page. Well done and thank you to everyone involved – the Cup has been a pleasure to run, and we, as judges, have been proud to be a part of it. We hope that next year, however the Cup is working, and whoever is running it, it will be back, stronger and more popular than ever. Until then, goodbye and happy editing! deleting Steve Zella page?
Uh... yeah so you just deleted my Steve Zella page. You obviously have no idea who he is and are not aware of how much he means to me and my community. So if I may politely ask you, could you not delete his page like 5 minutes after I create it? Thanks.
Steve Zella Fan aka BHS LAX 1 —Preceding unsigned comment added by Hj.lee9 (talk • contribs) 02:22, 3 November 2010 (UTC)
- Hi HJ, I deleted the article Steve Zella because it made no indication that the subject is significant, that is — why it should be included in an encyclopedia. Please check Wikipedia's guidelines about notability (WP:NOTABILITY) to see what editors are looking for in terms of significance. I also included in my deletion that the article contained negative unsourced material about the subject, a living person. Biographies of living people are taken very seriously, and negative unsourced material is removed very quickly. Thanks for you understanding. Regards, Jujutacular talk 02:30, 3 November 2010 (UTC)
Fleury.
Er... Why did you delete my inclusion of Fleury's affair with Weatherburn? It was the subject of one of Weatherburn's pieces and as such is one of the greater occurrences in 18th century British musical history. I view this as blatant homophobia! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 125.237.79.115 (talk) 04:34, 3 November 2010 (UTC)

Gardiner Street Gospel Choir
hi there! hard job to me to write according wikipedia rules and learn them. finally, even with all references my article: gardiner street gospel choir is about to be deleted. if you can improve or fix it,please do it, but don't delete it,please. thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Zulmar Jofli dos Santos Junior (talk • contribs) 12:52, 4 November 2010 (UTC)
- Hi there Zulmar. Check out Wikipedia's guidelines about notability: WP:N. If the choir has been covered in multiple reliable sources, it can most likely be kept. Look for writings about the choir in newspapers, books, or reliable third-party websites. Regards, Jujutacular talk 13:03, 4 November 2010 (UTC)

Hi, I really liked the work you did on the Humpty Dumpty cover. Do you think you would be able to do something similar on this cover? Cheers. P. S. Burton (talk) 15:14, 4 November 2010 (UTC)
- I could work on that one, although indeed I wouldn't be able to do much with such low resolution and jpg format. I just did a search though, and I might be able to find a higher quality image at a nearby library. I'll get back to you soon. Jujutacular talk 16:12, 4 November 2010 (UTC)

Restore Jesse Proper article
Please restore the article "Jesse Proper" here is another source of his significance. http://www.webstercommunitynews.com/technology/79-state-news/383-local-excels-writing-theme-songs-jingles Please restore the page on the grounds that Kate Lee (musician) is being supported on Wikipedia credited from the same source website. Both are significant musicians from the local area Webster, NY well known for their commercial music. 67.246.238.119 (talk) 05:14, 6 November 2010 (UTC)
- Are you the article's original creator (AndreaCristian (talk · contribs))? I would suggest submitting the article at Wikipedia:Articles for creation, or I could userfy the article at User:AndreaCristian/Jesse Proper. Regards, Jujutacular talk 05:48, 6 November 2010 (UTC)
- Regarding the above: Sorry, don't feel any obligation to answer the above question (usernames keep IP addresses hidden from public view). Jujutacular talk 09:38, 6 November 2010 (UTC)
- I am a talent promoter/distributor of Webster NY. We feel that an article of Jesse is just as important on Wikipedia as it is on the local news. He is significant for his commercial music jingles. Would it be more proper if the title of the article was "Jesse Proper (Musician)" instead? Other than that, the credited sources are legit. 67.246.238.119 (talk) 09:59, 6 November 2010 (UTC)
- Well, I would recommend submitting the article at WP:AFC. This is especially important because it sounds like you have a conflict of interest with the subject. Jujutacular talk 15:46, 6 November 2010 (UTC)
- How do we go about doing so? Posting in the discussion page? Or by moving it to Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/Jesse_Proper ? I do not have the original article in text format. 67.246.238.119 (talk) 16:53, 6 November 2010 (UTC)
- I have restored the deleted material to the AFC page. An editor will review the submission and determine if it is enough to pass WP:N. Jujutacular talk 18:43, 6 November 2010 (UTC)

FPC closing script
Don't be too proud of this technological terror you've constructed. The ability to close an FPC nomination with a script is insignificant next to the power of the Force. [...] I find your lack of article replacements disturbing. (See Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope if that was confusing.) Anyway, I've made the mistake a million times too. With the script, we'll need to remain vigilant to make sure everything gets covered. I've already caught myself forgetting to add the FP tag a few times. Thanks again for all your work on the script! - lol... Good news then. Got a quick question. What are the rules for using a personal photo in an article? Ive been looking at working on some articles about places that are near where we live and wanted to update the photos used and add some more. Do photos have to be third party or can we use personal pics?Wolfstorm000 (talk) 05:01, 24 November 2010 (UTC)
- Personal photos are definitely encouraged. Third party photos are in fact not as common because they have to be licensed under a free license (or qualify for fair use). I've taken a few of my own: [1]. Uploading at the Commons is the norm, so that they can be used on any Wikimedia project. If you need any help with it, feel free to drop by! State Nation
Dear J
Curious that you can be the sole fascista responsible for deleting an article whose subject I am quite sure you are not even qualified to vet.No doubt this kind of action enlarges the subjective estimation you have of your (small) member. You would be better advised to respond to one of those many emails that promise to do that physically, and let the larger community decide the value of the article that is over your head. Cease and desist. 64.134.238.103 (talk) 05:25, 19 November 2010 (UTC)
- I hit the delete button, but I would hardly call myself the 'sole fascista'. Jujutacular talk 05:34, 19 November 2010 (UTC)
Chaz Clemons
Hi Jujutacular,
Could you have another look at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Chaz Clemons and your close please. I admit I messed up the page with my chopping and changing, but as it stands I count my nom, a weak delete and two keeps which I don't believe sit with the consensus at WP:NSPORTS. I would think it needed relisting for further discussion. Cheers, Bigger digger (talk) 14:23, 21 November 2010 (UTC)
- Honestly I'd rather not, as the AFD has already been listed for three weeks, garnering one weak delete recommendation beyond your nomination in that time. I did note that you had changed your mind again when I closed it, and it is at best a "no consensus" situation. If still you feel that strongly about it, I will indeed relist it and let another admin close it in a week. Jujutacular talk 16:35, 21 November 2010 (UTC)
- Sorry to be a pest, but if you wouldn't mind I'd be much obliged. I'll go and ask DGG to reconsider his vote once you relist it. Bigger digger (talk) 18:00, 21 November 2010 (UTC)

You deleted a page for possible copyright infringement. I WROTE THE WEBSITE AND THIS INFORMATIONAL SHEET ON HIM, so there is zero copyright infringement. We have no way to verify that you are the copyright owner simply by your username, so material that is already published is not accepted until authorship can be verified. Thank you for understanding. CloseFPC and Befreiungshalle
Hi, I've just used CloseFPC for the first time, to close your nom (see above). It worked great! Thanks for putting so much time and effort into the script. (And thanks to Makeemlighter for finding some bugs already, it was all smooth for me, :p).
I'm also here to nudge you about the Befreiungshalle nom. I was about to clear old closures when I realised that this is about to move off the page, and the closure is still not resolved. Although I didn't argue you asking PLW for his opinion, I don't see what else he could do apart from restate his support for the set only. Were you banking on him changing his mind? It's also been 11 days since he last edited, and I don't feel we can continue waiting. Think we need to have this either definitely promoted or definitely not promoted before the Signpost starts gathering the new featured stuff for the next edition and before Goings-on is archived. Although I don't personally feel that this should be promoted, I realise that I opposed and some may feel I'm pushing a personal agenda (no matter what the numbers say—and it is very close). Perhaps you'd like to open this for comment on FPC talk? Thanks, :) Maedin\talk 19:57, 26 November 2010 (UTC)
- Good to hear about the script :) It still needs a bit of work, but for now it's quite a time saver.
- About Befreiungshalle: I'm not sure what I hoped, but indeed you were right. Probably just hoped I didn't have to go back to the nominator/photographer talk pages with the bad news :( Anyway, it's done. Thanks for the correction. Jujutacular talk 06:37, 27 November 2010 (UTC)

The Signpost
Juju, thanks for the tip on the leading pic at F and A. On another matter, is it possible to force the top three pie charts at the Election report to stay horizontally aligned irrespective of one's window width? I know we spoke about this a while ago, but I find it all a bit hard. Tony (talk) 02:22, 13 December 2010 (UTC)
- No problem. About the pie charts: I don't recall speaking about it before, but I believe using {{Multiple image}} would work. Jujutacular talk 02:37, 13 December 2010 (UTC)
- Ta, that's great. I will use the syntax you inserted as a model in future. Tony (talk) 09:40, 13 December 2010 (UTC)
Closing script
I see that you've enhanced the script so that the FP tag is added to the image. Excellent! Two questions for you. Does the script use the "Name of nomination" for anything but New featured content and FP Thumbs? Also, and forgive me if I've asked or you've answered this before, is there something preventing you from making the script edit Goings-on as well? Thanks for all the great work! Makeemlighter (talk) 07:48, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
- Right, "Name of nomination" is used only for New featured content and FP thumbs, but it will be used for Goings-on when I get it working. The only thing stopping the script from editing Goings-on is my coding abilities :) I tried some code out, but wasn't able to get it to work. I'll probably get back to work on that in about a week or so (final exams / graduating from university this week). Also, Maedin is getting the FP subcategory pages formatted all the same, so I'll be adding that to the script at some point too. Jujutacular talk 15:28, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
- Congratulations! For the FP subcategory pages, we might want to talk about exactly what they should say. The basic formula is clear from the closing instructions, but sometimes you get images which don't quite fit. It will probably end up being Name of nomination at Article, by Creator (edited by Editor). That probably adds an Author parameter for non-Wikipedians and an Article parameter. Anyway, I trust your coding skills! Keep up the good work, and thanks again for doing this. Makeemlighter (talk) 03:19, 15 December 2010 (UTC)
- Thank you :) Yea I already have a little bit of code in place to use for the additional parameters. I don't think the FP subcat will be too hard once all the pages are formatted. Thanks for the tips. Jujutacular talk 15:02, 15 December 2010 (UTC)

- Another question for you. Will the script start its own archives page? I saw that you created the December archives. You did it well before the first December closure, so I'm wondering if it was necessary for the script to function. It's, of course, no trouble to start a new page once a month; it's just important to know that someone has to do it. Thanks. Makeemlighter (talk) 10:28, 24 December 2010 (UTC)
- It would have started the page, but it wouldn't have added the template to the top. I have added some code so it will do it properly: [2]. Thanks for bringing this to my attention! Jujutacular talk 14:47, 24 December 2010 (UTC)
Featured Sound Candidates discussion
As someone who has nominated or commented on one of the current candidates, a couple of which are getting very old, you are invited to comment at this discussion to see if we can tidy up the FSC page before Christmas (and / or one or more of the nominations). Bridge
Can you explain me why it was not promoted? 8 supports and 5 opposes - I thought the more supports it gets the likelier it is featured.-- ♫Greatorangepumpkin♫ T 16:40, 19 December 2010 (UTC)
- For promotion, we generally look for 2/3 majority in support (so indeed, more supports will make that more likely). In this case it was 8/13 < 2/3. See the FPC Header for more info. Jujutacular talk 16:47, 19 December 2010 (UTC)
- That means:
- 2 - 3
- 8,67~9 - 13
That was very close to get a FL :(. -- ♫Greatorangepumpkin♫ T 16:52, 19 December 2010 (UTC)

Hi! After you reviewed my article Alto Vista Chapel this morning, I read your user page and read an interesting article on Mezcala Bridge where you have done some editing. I then decided to expand this article here User:Nvvchar/Sandbox 5. There is this reference [3] which is probably wiki based and which could be used for expansion. There are four imgs in this reference which could also be probably transferred easily to Wikicommons (but I don't know how). We could collaborate to expand this article on my user page and then transfer it to main space for DYK nomination.-- N.V.V. Char Talk . 12:47, 25 December 2010 (UTC)
- I'd love to help, thanks for the note. Not sure if those images can be transferred to Commons, as they don't seem to have any licensing information that I can see. I think I'll be most helpful doing copyediting. Regards, Jujutacular talk 23:32, 25 December 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks. I added some more text to make it 5x and moved it to main space. It is now nominated as a joint DYK. You are welcome to propose an alternate hook.-- N.V.V. Char Talk . 02:38, 26 December 2010 (UTC)
- Great work, and nice hook :) Jujutacular talk 02:48, 26 December 2010 (UTC)

- Thanks. Would you join me in expanding this article Mezcala River. However, there is another article of the same river in a different name as Balsas River which seems to be a more popular name as I am able to get quite a lot of information under this name. Since you are an Admn you may be able to merge the two, if it is appropriate. I will let you know the user site after I make a reasonable draft of the article.-- N.V.V. Char Talk . 05:42, 26 December 2010 (UTC)
- The Mezcala River page is a redirect to Balsas River. What would need merging? Jujutacular talk 05:50, 26 December 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, It is merged. Probably a misreading.-- N.V.V. Char Talk . 06:23, 26 December 2010 (UTC)
- I have started the river article here User:Nvvchar/Balas River. I have found some references on development aspects and will be adding more text soon. You may like to suggest some references which I could access to find info on flora, fauna, main attractions, etc.-- N.V.V. Char Talk . 02:28, 27 December 2010 (UTC)
- I have completed my inputs to User:Nvvchar/Balsas River. You may like to add more. Also, please move it to main space as an Admn. Thanks.--Nvvchar. 13:53, 30 December 2010 (UTC)
- Moved to mainspace. Great work. Jujutacular talk 21:31, 30 December 2010 (UTC)
