The Dean weighs in

Hi, Jon.

I am not a wikipedia editor or anything. I'm not even sure where to insert this section , since it looks like most entries are put at the bottom.

I check Wikipedia occasionally and find the debates about whether I was a Tri Delta or not (that wasn't your battle), our relationship with Kent Campus, The University System of Ohio and, of course, our name, humorous and fascinating. I understand that Kent State University Stark's and my Wikipedia pages are not owned by Kent State University or Kent State University Stark, our PR departments and certainly not me. Because it isn't owned or controlled by Kent, that would seem to give us more flexibility, not less, although we always work within Kent's guidelines.

If it would be helpful, I would like to invite you to our beautiful campus (yes, we call it a campus, small "c" when referring to the physical plant) :-), show you around and visit with you about these titles, topics and relationships. Sometimes it is helpful to get first hand experience, talk to our students, etc. If you are interested, you can contact me by university email or call my office and we'll find a time to visit.

Meanwhile, speaking as just a Wikipedia reader (although one that understands these issues better than anyone!), we minimize the use of the word campus in our name for a variety of reasons. This is being done incrementally and completely within Kent guidelines.

• You are correct that there are architectural elements that say Kent State University. We have lovely etched glass, several seals on buildings, podiums, etc. that there is no reason to replace -- we are indeed part of Kent State University and the use of both is not mutually exclusive.

• You are also correct that when you Google us, you will find more references to "Kent State University Stark Campus" because we used that for 60 years, and only recently use "Kent State University Stark." Even if we insisted (as if we could) that everything say Kent State University Stark, it would take many years for old habits to change, and probably even longer for new Google references to wipe out the older ones.

Kent State University Stark is the preferred name. Kent State Stark or Kent Stark are fine, but leave out the important term "university." Because Chancellor Fingerhut is outspoken that we are Stark County's public university, it is important to use university in the name. It also helps to differentiate us from our colocated college, Stark State (I thought it had a hyphen, too, but ...)

Might it make sense to change the name of the article and redirect from Kent State Stark Campus (or whatever it is how) to Kent State University Stark, so that the description matches the title of the article?

Use of "campus" in Kent Stark's name

Thank you for your note. Yes, I did see the discussion. I just disagree with your opinion.

The use of the word campus in the institution's name has been phased out nd isn't used by Kent State University (see their University Communication and Marketing page), by Kent State Universtiy Stark (I think you've already heard from them) or by the Univesity System of Ohio.

It is interesting why, against all conventional use, you are fighting for the use an obsolete term. Maybe you should actually visit the campus and see how they portray it on their signage and their officaial publications. See for example:

Keep going and even the back cover and the return address is Kent State University Stark.

Now, about the seal.

You seem to think that it isn't/wasn't legitimate and took it upon yourself to remove and destroy the link to it.

See the seal on the podium in the picture? It says Kent State University Stark.

No, not everything that says "campus" has been ripped off the walls and sent to the recycling bin, but it looks like as they replace things, they are using the new name and the new seal.

So while I respect that you apparently like the old name better for some reason, it doesn't seem to be your decision to make when ALL EVIDENCE IS TO THE CONTRARY. Yes, it is a campus, just like the Kent Campus is a campus and all college campuses are campuses. But that isn't their name.

Issue II - May 2008

From the editor: Here's Issue II of the project newsletter. We're trying to decide if this is sinking or floating. If you would like to contribute to next month's newsletter please jump right in at the News Desk! Have a great May. The Ohio Portal The maintainers of the Ohio Portal are looking to get it to featured status. They would like to ask all project members to help improve it any way they can. What needs to be done most is the supplying of selected articles and images. Selected Article: Indian Head Rock There is a eight ton rock in Ohio that was removed from the Ohio River. This rock is known as the Indian Head Rock Dating back to the early 1800’s, this rock was seen sticking out of the Ohio River and used as a navigational mark for barges along the river. The names of citizens from the town of Portsmouth, Ohio are carved into the rock from the late nineteenth a early twentieth centuries. Some of the names were of well known families from Ohio. They would swim out to the rock, have their picture taken with it or simply carve their names into it. With the advent of the Locks and Dams along the Ohio River, the rock eventually was submerged, but the legend lived on. A gentleman from Ironton, Ohio located the rock after searching a very long time for it, and he and a crew of scuba divers recovered the rock and took it to the shore to be donated to Ohio for historical value. After hearing the news about the rock being removed, Kentucky introduced legislation against the removal of the rock. They also want the diver who found it to be prosecuted for removing the rock. Kentucky owns the greatest part of the land the river runs on. Even the Army Corp. of Engineers got involved as to how to move the rock without damaging it. BYU-Idaho Intro

The word Mormon is better than "members of the LDS church." "Mormon" is concise and people understand it better. Also, the fact that 99% of the students at BYU-I are Mormon is perhaps the defining characteristic of the school. So it should be near the very beginning of the entry. If you are so certain about your edits, why don't you sign up for an account rather than do it anonymously? Further, those people you named DO NOT have final say over what is in the Wiki about KSU-Stark. I am not guessing either...all edits have been made with sources; to remove point of view (POV) issues; or to organize the paragraphs so they flow better. Much of the article seems to be a direct copy of KSU-Stark's own website, which is a violation of copyright and Wikipedia policy anyway. --JonRidinger (talk) 04:18, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

The Ohio Portal The maintainers of the Ohio Portal are looking to get it to featured status. They would like to ask all project members to help improve it any way they can. What needs to be done most is the supplying of selected articles and images. Getting the Project Moving WikiProject Ohio as an entity doesn't have as much action as other state projects. For this reason it has been proposed that the inactive WikiProject Ohio Townships be added as our taskforce. There is a !poll going on at WT:OH and your opinion is essential in the matter! Stepshep has also proposed sending an invite to everyone in Category:Wikipedians in Ohio with an invite to join the project. If you are already a member you would not receive the notice of course. Once again, please note your opinion on the project talkpage. Selected Article: Central Avenue Historic District (Dayton, Ohio) The Central Avenue Historic District is a nationally recognized historic district located at 201 to 338 Central Avenue in Dayton, Ohio. It consists of late 19th and 20th Century Revival-style houses as well as late Victorian-style houses, which were all originally single-family residences. On December 16, 1982, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Each month a new Ohio related stub is the selected article. If you have a new stub created feel free to nominate it at the NewsDesk. Article Assessment Reedy Bot and ShepBot are currently hard at work tagging all of the Ohio articles. The King's School, Ely

Hi Jon, caught your edit, and so have started doing what you advised re: capitalisation - when you are working on something almost from bare bones, you tend not to notice your own foyballs of writing! :-D With regards to the title and 'the', how would I go about changing this, do I move the article and setup a redirect? Kent State University To-Do list

Hey, I noticed you do a lot of work on the KSU page. I'm still trying to educate myself on the wiki ins and outs. I was wondering if you could help create a "ToDo" list for KSU's wiki page? Ohio State has one on their discussion board and I think there's a lot of stuff missing from the KSU wiki including more indepth information about the top programs, famous faculty, etc... Other parks

I think there's a park just down from there on Gougler called "John Brown Park" or something. But the sign doesn't say what it's purported to say. I think the name of the park has changed. Badagnani (talk) 20:40, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

Elementary schools

The current consensus view is that elementary schools are not inherently notable and do not merit individual articles. Every one that goes to WP:AFD ends up being merged and redirected. The Record-Courier (Nevada)

It's not a big deal, but Wikipedia policy for publications seems to be to include "The" when it's part of the title in the masthead (just as "The" is included for book titles). See The Washington Post, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal, for example. That's why I named the article that way. —KCinDC (talk) 04:05, 24 October 2008 (UTC)

Cleveland Browns

Good catch, Jon! I'm seeing a number of things about the article at Cleveland Browns that just aren't right. I suspect the article was vandalized recently. (Actually, I know it was; I just don't think we've caught everything just yet.) Unfortunately, the founding year of the team was one of the things I missed. Thanks for your help.
