Question

[edit]

Hello Drilnoth, As you know I am new to Wikipedia, I made a mistake by adding a page that was tag for speedy deletion due to it appearing to be advertising. That was not my intent. Can you direct me to an example of a page for a commercial business that would be appropriate for Wikipedia. Thank you for any assistance

Johnfromforties (talk) 20:33, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Sure! A lot of the articles in Category:Company stubs are short articles which don't appear to be advertising (as a random example, ABRY Partners). The article you posted had a few problems. Firstly is the lack of references (see Wikipedia's guidelines on verifiability and citing sources). Additionall, the "Community involvement" and "Industry involvement" don't really seem to be right... the read kind of like a list of achievements, which can sometimes indicate that the article is meant as advertising if it doesn't also discuss things which have been considered "bad" about the company (as covered in reliable sources).
That having been said, I think that it's really close to being a good article for Wikipedia to have. Here's my suggestions: 1) Add some reliable sources about the company, to help establish its general notability, one of Wikipedia's inclusion criteria, 2) Rewrite the community and industry involvement sections to be prose, rather than a list. I'll check back in a few days to see how the article currently on your userpage looks.
If I remember correctly, the original version of the article that you posted at Dial One Security looked like this, which looked much more like an advertisement than what is currently at User:Johnfromforties, because of the product list and the list of partners. The current version looks much better, and just needs a little more work. Let me know if you have any other questions, or if you need some more help. As I said, I'll take a look at the page in a few days and let you know if it's ready to be made into a real article.
Thanks for your contributions to Wikipedia; I hope that you stay awhile. :) -Drilnoth (talk) 21:17, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, and don't let this discourage you from editing. In fact, the first article I created was speedily deleted, too, when I had meant it to be a valid page. That deletion actually helped me learn more about Wikipedia's policies and guidelines than I had before, so hopefully you'll have a similar experience. :) -Drilnoth (talk) 21:23, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, great advice. I see exactly what you mean. I am a EE so I think in lists not prose. Johnfromforties (talk) 13:15, 3 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Okay. As I said, I'll check back in a few days to see how its coming along, or you can leave me a note at my talk page if you'd like me to take another look at it sooner. -Drilnoth (talk) 13:23, 3 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hey; do you mind if I make some edits to the page also, too help you out? I just want to ask first since it is your user page. -Drilnoth (talk) 15:50, 3 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Please do, i am working my way through referencing stuff. Any help would be greatly appreciated.Johnfromforties (talk) 15:58, 3 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Okay; I might make some edits a little later. By the way, to indent your posts on talk pages, you can use colons (like this ":::", to make it a third-level indentation). -Drilnoth (talk) 16:36, 3 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Looking much better. I think you should be able to move it to the mainspace soon (that is, make it into an actual article rather than keeping it on your userpage). When you're ready to do that, see Help:Moving a page (note that to move a page you have to be "autoconfirmed", that is, having had an account for at least 4 days and having made at least 10 edits. If you're not autoconfirmed when you're ready to move the article, just let me know here and I can move it for you). -Drilnoth (talk) 19:17, 3 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I want to work on references more, it is interesting to think through this and actually have a page that has facts about a company that are independently verified , my reference 4 is a reference to the company's own web page, that does not seem like a creditable independent reference, what do you think? Johnfromforties (talk) 19:27, 3 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It is perfectly fine to use a company's website in an article about itself (see Wikipedia's guideline on types of sources), as long as they aren't the sole source used. As long as there are other reliable sources in the article, having a few references to primary sources is perfectly acceptable, even normal. -Drilnoth (talk) 19:35, 3 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion of Dial One Security

[edit]

A tag has been placed on Dial One Security, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be blatant advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become an encyclopedia article. Please read the guidelines on spam as well as Wikipedia:FAQ/Business for more information.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. Dial One Security

[edit]

The article Dial One Security has been speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This was done because the article, which appeared to be about a real person, organization (band, club, company, etc.), or web content, did not indicate how or why the subject is notable, that is, why an article about that subject should be included in Wikipedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the notability of the subject may be deleted at any time. If you can indicate why the subject is really notable, you are free to re-create the article, making sure to cite any verifiable sources.

Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, and for specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for musicians, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. -- JLaTondre (talk) 16:16, 22 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Austin E. Knowlton Foundation requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a company or corporation, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for companies and corporations.
