William G. Tachau
I'm interested to learn from your new article that Tachau "worked as a draftsman from 1896 to 1897 in the architectural firm of Lamb and Rich," and I would like to pinpoint a citation for this information. The Acker family
I saw you restored the article on Syboat Acker. The reason I redirected it earlier was that there didn't seem to be enough material for an independent article. Is Syboat noteworthy for any reason other than his relation to the more famous Ackers? If so, that should be included in the article, but if not, I don't think there's much point in having a separate article for him. Definition of adaptively reused churches: Adaptively Reused is an historic preservation / architectural conservation term for the reuse of a structure. For churches, this would include continuation as a church but for a different Christian denomination. I've distinguished "Adaptively Reused churches" from "Former churches" because former churches could refer to any church building no longer used as a church, which would include demolition, closure, abandonment, ruin, etc. Hope this clarifies that neither category is really a subcategory of each other, although they do heavily overlap. I would add your St Thomas A Beckett Church turned residential to both Former churches and Adaptively Reused churches categories.
In my own work, I distinguished reuse from 9.2 to 9.31 -- 9.1. Religious: Original Denomination Continued Use 9.2. Religious: Original Denomination Specialized uses 9.3. - Rook Lane Chapel turned arts centre, Glenside Museum, St. Paul's Church, Bristol (now circus skills school) and St Werburgh's Church, Bristol (now climbing centre) are all good examples (the latter two have both been published extensively in adaptive reuse journals as preeminent examples). In fact, St. Paul's Church is a good example of how to distinguish an adaptively reused church from a closed church because it is owned by the Churches Conservation Trust and still consecrated (and thus NOT a closed church).
- The key defining quality of a adaptively reused church is that the structure should have been first purpose-built as a church and then been reused for another program. Example: If a structure was built as a synagogue and then converted into a church and then adaptively reused as a office building, it would be an adaptively reused synagogue.
Hi. I was wondering how this new category of yours differed from category:Former church buildings. Is the capital "R" in "Reused" deliberate? It suggests that it's some sort of title, but I'm assuming that's not the case. So who decides whether it's an "adaptively reused" church? What is the definition of an Adaptively Reused churches - I've been contributing to quite a few articles on old churches & its not a term I'm familiar with. I suggest we rename this category to "Secularized churches", which is what the Commons category is called. It makes a bit more sense ... not all former church buildings have yet been reused (as noted above), nor will they all be reused for religious purposes. - Addendum: this should apply only to churches that have been reused for nonreligious purposes. A church building converted to a mosque or synagogue (they do exist) has obviously not been secularized. And where such use has been established, not just proposed. I would consider that you take Dutch Reformed Church (Newburgh, New York) out of the category since, while it has been deconsecrated and proposals exist for using it as a community center, none have yet been implemented. - I'll agree with you on Dutch Reformed Church (Newburgh, New York). Perhaps the 'r' could be lower case but I still believe there is a need for a separate category for adaptive reuse. I do not know why "secularized churches" is different from the much larger category of "former churches." I believe those two could be merged, but the category of adaptively reused churches should include non-secularized churches that have been reused by other Christian denominations, religions, or maintain mixed use (possibly secular) programs but remain (at least consecrated) churches (such as St. Paul's Church, Bristol).
- You forgot to sign that. It's just that "adaptively reused" is a bit awkward. Actually, how about "repurposed churches", which covers any reuse, for another religion or for nightclubs or whatever. That's also a fairly common term. Daniel Case (talk) 12:24, 11 February 2010 (UTC)

DEFAULTSORT values
I see you reverted my recent removal of DEFAULTSORT values from a number of church articles. Unfortunately, setting a DEFAULTSORT of "(New York City)" makes these articles sort as if they begin with the character "(". I cannot see any reason why this might be desirable in any context, and can only assume that it is a mistake on your part. - I realize that and corrected the mistake. I added the DEFAULTSORT tag to sort Chapel of the Resurrection (New York City), as Resurrection Chapel (New York City), etc., including a number of the St. XXX's Church, where articles linking to them originally were titled Church of St. XXX. It's always nice to see someone else who's interested in this nearly-forgotten architect. I noticed you added Our Lady of Sorrows Church to the works of Henry Engelbert. However, this church was already listed in the article, a bit further up on the page. I've taken the liberty of undoing your edit -- but the church is still listed in the article.
By the way, are you sure the name of the church should be in the possessive form? ( Our Lady of Sorrows's Church (New York City) ) I noticed that on the Archdiocese of New York website http://www.archny.org/parish-search/index.cfm, they don't use the possessive form. My mistake for the double listing. Thank you for deleting the redundant item. I have to add the citation for Engelbert to the list and the church article (http://www.nycago.org/Organs/NYC/html/OurLadySorrows.html). Normally, I add the references while I create the articles but I I neglected to do that. I created all of the RC church articles for the Archdiocese of New York rather hastily. (Hoping that other people would add more interesting details.) In my rush, I prefer the possessive for churches. However, for this church, I think it is best to be moved to Church of Our Lady of Sorrow (New York City). Yeah, it was a pleasure seeing some Wikipedians in real life. As far as project WP:NRHP, I'll only suggest it if it helps you do what you really want to do - which looks like churches and architects - which are probably pretty close. I stripped out most of the churches in Westchester County on my user page User:Smallbones/WestchesterChurches. This is only to demonstrate that there are lots of recognized churches that folks would love to have you work on. I'll guess that at least 10% of the 85,000 NRHP listings are churches. One nice thing about concentrating on NRHP sites, is that there is usually some reasonably good documentation - e.g. the NRHP Nomination forms. I'll come back with a link to a Pennsylvania church nomination form - NY State links will be done in a different system, but you could probably find the right link at Wikipedia:WikiProject_National_Register_of_Historic_Places/Editor_help#New_York (or maybe ask User:Daniel Case).

I am very new at this but I did want to get back to you about your message to my talk page. I agree with everything you said there and I think it would be valuable if we stayed in contact. I have my email address activated here and you can feel free to contact me there.
We obviously share an interest in religious architecture. In my case I have limited myself to catholic churches but there are plenty of them some 50,000 in the US. I hope to identify the architects for as many as possible. The information is being stored in an sql-server database but that does no one else any good. This is where wikipedia provides what I believe to be an indespensible opportunity to share this kind of valuable information (otherwise available only in archives and libraries) to others.
Right now my main concentration is Connecticut where I have been able to obtain architects for some 200 of the 375 churches there. To that end I will be visiting the archives of the archdiocese of Hartford later in the week where I have received some significant help before. I also have a great deal of information on Massachusetts (where I live) and New York, with some information on the most distinguished achitects throughout the country.
Most of the information I've acquired over the years comes from local resources. Of late some material is available on line but still most of what can be found is locked up in the public libraries, archives and building departments of the various communities. Obviously this makes it hard to get this information. I've been considering some other options, Facebook comes to mind but I want to think that through a bit more before I go that route.

- Discussion? Parishes are sorted by location everywhere like other items. Location is the basic for sorting. Continent -> Country -> State -> City or other location. See other articles for sorting. Of course you can also sort them by patron. It you disagree, you can submit it for discussion before you change it. Also, remember, the parish means area, the church means building. - I have to just state my own background has been entirely with church building articles and not parishes, mainly historic building articles in the US, UK, and Ireland. I was unaware there were parish listings. Nearly all of the RC Church building articles include the history of the parish, the main church of the parish, and a list of associated chapels of ease or mission churches within the parish. If these are highly significant, the associated chapel of ease receives its own article. But most likely it is just listed under a chapter heading. All building articles are filed under the primary dedication to prevent their cluttering as a random list of starting with "Church of..." vs. "Saint" or "Holy...". Additionally, a number of counties, towns & cities have categories for Churches in town, state. Surely parishes could be grouped more easily that way.--James R
- We can't create our own naming. If official name of the church (building) is: "St. Michael the Archangel Church", we have to use it as is, and add only location. If name of the parish (named by bishop by decree) is "St. Michael the Archangel", we can't name it as the church. It all depends on what it's about the article, if most of the text relates to the parish, in the name of the article should be a parish church and the description of the church included in the section. If the text of the church is very large, it should be a separate article about the church. In this way, articles are divided plWiki. Worse is if the article is just one sentence. - Hi, that's fascinating that there are more than one (I thought it was initially an unusual name that stood out). I double-checked the Times article and it referred to Our Lady of Victory Church, Bronx, twice. No address was given but I haven't seen that church listed in any of the Archdiocese parish lists for active or closed parishes (it could be run by an Order or another peculiar so it wouldn't be on that list). Alternatively, the NYTimes printed Bronx when they meant to print Brooklyn, twice.

Incidentally, it's for this very reason -- multiple churches in the city by the same name -- that generally it's better to use "(Manhattan)" as a dismabiguator rather than "{New York City)", especially for older churches. Before 1899, "New York City" meant Manhattan, and Brooklyn was a separate city, so they often have institutions with the same or very similar names, which can cause confusion.
I've just moved the "Church of the Holy Redeemer" article from "{New York City)" to "(Manhattan}". I don't know if there's another church by that name in one of the other boroughs, but we're better safe than sorry, unless we're dead certain that the thing in Manhattan is the only one in the city. - Yes. I've tried raising this point in discussions. And yes, I am familiar with the 1 January 1898 city merger between the largest and third largest cities in the union. I go with NYC because they are the more notable churches (generally) and when I started there were so few church articles. Now Manhattan makes much more sense. However, since its (Brooklyn, New York),(Queens, New York), etc. I always feel it should be (Manhattan, New York), which is somewhat redundant since there are few other Manhattan's around (except for Kansas). I still think it's good to at least have the article start out as New York City and then get moved (keeping the NYC redirect) to Manhattan. Do you know of any discussions on the location naming of buildings. I am against the comma separation of towns and the X of town type titles.---James R (talk)

Hi, I just wanted to let you know there's a problem with these church disambiguation pages you've been creating. Per WP:INCDAB, you shouldn't be creating disambiguation pages with qualified names (i.e., parentheses in the title), but instead redirecting to the higher-level disambig. For instance, I merged the content from St. Jerome's Church (New York City) into St. Jerome Church and turned it into a redirect. Dunlap ref
Hi. Not every author of a ref has, or ever will have, a Wikipedia article about them -- most, in fact, never will -- so there's no need to wikilink the author's name when you're adding a ref, unless you know they have an article, or suspect that they might (or should) have one in the future. - True enough, I'm a stickler for Turabian style footnoting but if Wikipedia's style is last name first, I'll try that. I've read your article and find it very worthwhile. There are literally thousands of articals on Wikipedia right now that are not as worthy as what you've written here.
And I can see that you have spent what must be a great deal of time and personal effort adding a whole series of small articals about Catholic Churches throughout the New York Area. These are similar to those I wrote on Connecticut. Personally I believe this to be a very excellent beginning to establish the neglected history of these buildings and their architects. The very fact that you have a framework of all of these churches out there is very, very helpful in beginning to organize this large collection of art so that others that follow us will have it available to them. Isn't that something that Wikipedia would support?
I'm very troubled that the individual who flagged your artical as non-noteable has no need to proove his case while the burden of proving noteability falls squarely on your or my shoulders. Something seems very wrong here.
And if this person can get away with removing this article then he/she can do it to all of the others. This is, in my view, unfair and destructive to the point of vandalism.
I'm really getting sick of this crap. There should be another way to deal with this and to silence some of our critics.
I's be interested in hearing your opinions. It really doesn't make much sense to continue to try and help this organization if you and I have to deal with this all the time. Isn't there a better way?
In the meantime I will look around and see what I can find out about the building in question.

- What's he done now? I was able to save the St. Agnes, Bridgeport, because he ignored an AfD ruling. You're lucky because that horrendous AfD string seems to have provided most of the articles you started with short term protection. There are a number of editors who just nominate articles for deletion or speedy deletion. I could list them but.... There are also many editors who make it a point of building up articles so they don't get deleted. Being nominated for deletion often improves articles greatly, at the cost of a lot of stress. Just be very civil and professional. You can get a warning or be blocked with out notice, and as I've found out, without a reason. Please email me privately. Please also review Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing and Wikipedia:Copy-paste. Plagiarism is a serious concern, but with a source like that one, copyright infringement is an even greater concern. St. Dominic Church (Bronx) and other matters

I wanted to get bck to you on your recent trip to Boston. I hope it was enjoyable. I would not have been able to meet with you because a week earlier, in Columbus Ohio, I sustained a violent fall where I lost the connection between my right quad tendon and the rest of my leg rendering me unable to walk. I needed immediate surgery to correct that and now, two weeks along, I am still recovering --- house bound. The entire recovery period will take a year at the least.
Anyhow I also wanted to ask you about the attributation of St. Dominic Church in the Bronx to Anthony J. Depace. I am inclined to agree that DePace and his people are the most likely firm to have done the job. I had looked for evidence tothis and could not come up with much. It seems that the footnotes on the Wikipedia pagw don't point out anything further.
So, yes, I think that you're right about DePace but would be interested in where you found thiis information. Aslo, did you update the DePace page itself to contain St. Dominic?

- Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Assessment FAQ says that anyone can do an assessment. That certainly applies to class=stub, class=start, and class=C, which are the only classes I ever apply, and class=C only for long articles with many inline citations. I must have a very good reason to apply higher than importance=mid. English counties - beware old references
I don't think anyone's picked you up on this from a quick scan of your archive, but can you be a bit more careful when assigning eg churches to English counties, you're obviously using references that are wildly out of date. For instance a lot of London suburbs were merged into London about 50 years ago, yet you put Congregational Church, Penge in Kent. Admittedly Penge is a particularly awkward example as it's been passed around from Surrey to London then out to Kent in 1900 before coming to rest in the London Borough of Bromley, but it does mean that all the cats were wrong and the {{Coord missing}} tag among others. A lot of the big towns have been carved out of the counties in the last 20 years, so the cat structure now reflects those unitary councils in many cases - it's easy enough to check by clicking through to the town article. Architects of Cathedrals
I noticed that you had just added Edmund Blacket, who is on my watchlist, so I started looking for those names missing from your list. I added a couple and immediately realised that this category is a no-goer. It's pointless.
The reason for this is that it automatically excludes Bramante, Michelangelo, Sangallo, Moderna, Bernini who together created "the greatest church in Christendom", which is, however, not a cathedral. Likewise, your category can include the architect of Cologne Cathedral but cannot include the architect of it's great architectural rival Ulm Minster. It cannot include the Medieval and Renaissance architects, Henry Yevele and Nicholas Hawksmoor of Westminster Abbey. It cannot include Gaudi creator of le Sagrada Familia.
It would be much better if you just left the category of ecclesiastical architects, because although a cathedral is expected to be a work of architectural significance, this may not be the case, particularly in Italy where the basilica of the local saint may be considerably more impressive than the church which is the seat of the bishop. On the other hand, a great number of the world's greatest churches in architectural terms, are not cathedrals. And there is no point in making separate lists of "basilica architects" and "abbey architects".

Image categories
I noticed you moving a great many pictures to church categories where they mix with articles. This practice is of course not forbidden, but to me it seems a poor one, at least for large cats like Category:Churches in Manhattan. Better I think to create a separate image cat, a child of Category:Images of Manhattan (and of the CiM cat). Or, for files that are in Commons, simply to create a commonscat link (similar to that in Category:Images of New York City rather than categorize them here in WP. - It's best not to hyperlink the entire text of a reference, since it can make it somewhat difficult to read. Instead, just link the title of an article or book.

- Most authors' names should not be Wikilinked, since the vast majority of them do not have, and are extremely unlikely ever to have, Wikipedia articles. Don't Wikilink them as a matter of course, only when you know they have an article, you reasonably expect them to have an article in the future, or you want to remind yourself and others that an article should be written. As I said, most authors will not fulfill these requirements.
- If the other references in an article have been presented library-style, i.e. last name first, please make any new references you add library-style as well.

Selectivity, please
Not every fact you find needs to be inserted into an article. A prime example were the addressess of architects' offices you put into many church articles. While sourced, and presumably accurate, such facts don't really service the reader, they just clutter up the article. The stuff you're doing now is pretty much the same. Unless there is some compelling reason to do so, saying that a church was at the same address now as it was in 1892 is just clutter. Worse, saying that a church had a different address in 1892, but the builidng's in the same place, without explaining why there is a disparity is potentially confusing to the reader, at the gain of very little.
I have to ask that you use better judgment and selectivity in your contributions, please, and not add stuff simply because you've found it in your research. Take a look at whether the new fact enhances the article, providing better value for the reader, or simply clutters it with factoids. Thanks. Beyond My Ken (talk) 18:32, 24 May 2011 (UTC)

All are invited, with no specialized knowledge of the subject or Wikipedia editing experience required. We will provide training sessions and resources for beginner Wikipedians, WiFi, reference materials, and suggested topics, as well as childcare and refreshments. Join us for a full Sunday of social Wikipedia editing at the Center for Jewish History (drop-in any time!), during which we will create, update, and improve Wikipedia articles pertaining to Women in Jewish History. All are invited, with no specialized knowledge of the subject or Wikipedia editing experience required. Expanding coverage of Jewish women on Wikipedia makes these women and their creations discoverable, addresses the gender bias on Wikipedia in a positive way, and works to correct imbalances archival collecting practice and institutional projects that have historically silenced women's narratives. A training session on editing Wikipedia will be held at 12:30 pm. Experienced Wikipedians will be on-hand to assist throughout the day. The WikiArte (Wiki Arte y Cultura Latinoamerica) edit-a-thon is a global campaign to improve Wikipedia's coverage of Latin American arts and culture and to counter geocultural systemic bias on Wikipedia. Featuring an opening Artists' Panel at 10am, with Sol Aramendi, Sharon Lee De La Cruz, and Marisa Morán Jahn, to be moderated by Rocío Aranda-Alvarado, curator at El Museo del Barrio. The Museum of Modern Art and Fundacion Cisneros/Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros are uniting with international allies to focus on the lives and works of Latin American artists, architects and designers. With keystone events scheduled for October 22 in New York City and other cities throughout the month (Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Caracas, & others), the campaign aims to further similar goals to Art+Feminism. On Saturday December 3, 2016, in conjunction with a global campaign, the Guggenheim will host its fifth Wikipedia edit-a-thon—or, #guggathon—to enhance Wikipedia's coverage of modern and contemporary artists from Greater China. The event will cap off Wikipedia Asian Month, an online campaign dedicated to augmenting Asian content on Wikipedia throughout November. New and experienced editors are welcome. The event will include a training session for participants who are new to Wikipedia, and Wikipedia specialists will be on hand to provide basic instruction and editing support. Editors are invited to view the exhibition Tales of Our Time following the event. The Guggenheim aims to raise awareness of the artists featured in the Tales of Our Time exhibition supported by The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Chinese Art Initiative, and build on the model of campaigns like the Wikipedia Edit-a-thon at the Guggenheim: Women in Architecture, Wikipedia Edit-a-thon at the Guggenheim: Contemporary Art of the Middle East and North Africa, and Art+Feminism.

Join us for an evening of social Wikipedia editing at the Museum of Modern Art Library's third annual Wiki Loves Pride Edit-a-thon, during which we will create, update, and improve Wikipedia articles pertaining to LGBT art, culture and history. All are invited, with no specialized knowledge of the subject or Wikipedia editing experience required. Themes for this event include art related to HIV/AIDS activism and on LGBTQ artists of the African Diaspora as part of the Black Lunch Table project. Experienced Wikipedians will be on-hand to assist throughout the day. Please bring your laptop and power cord; we will have library resources, WiFi, and a list of suggested topics on hand.

On the last Sunday of every month, the Boardroom at Ace Hotel New York hosts Action Equals History — a unique opportunity for New Yorkers to learn hands-on in a technology training/workshop session about the mechanics, practices and benefits of Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects. This is an opportunity for all to gather, share and work collectively towards a more robust account of history. For this month, we'll focus on Wikipedia casual editing, ways to use and develop Wikidata, building better edit-a-thon tools for a variety of different thematic campaigns, and user-testing them with the community. Towards a goal of advancing these tools for wider use with diverse local groups.

This event is the concluding "upload party" to the Wikipedia @ Open House New York Weekend photo scavenger hunt, and an accompanying Wikimedia Commons tutorial and multimedia hackathon, Learn how to work with your photos to illustrate New York City articles! Note that this is part of the larger Open House New York Weekend activities on Saturday and Sunday, when sites normally closed to the public are open for public visits and photography. If you can, bring your camera/photos to the event, and a laptop if you'd like to engage in adding photos to articles. But this is not necessary. For photos from last year's event, see the OHNY campaign 2016 on Wikimedia Commons.

The Wikipedia Asian Month Edit-a-thon @ The Met will be the Metropolitan Museum of Art's second edit-a-thon, hosted on Sunday November 19, 2017 in the Bonnie Sacerdote Classroom, Ruth and Harold D. Uris Center for Education (81st Street entrance) at The Met Fifth Avenue in New York City. Following the first Met edit-a-thon in May 2017, the museum is excited to work with Wikipedia Asian Month for the potential to seed new articles about Asian artworks, artwork types, and art traditions, from any part of Asia. These can be illustrated with thousands of its recently-released images of public domain artworks available for Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons from the museum’s collection spanning 5,000 years of art. The event is an opportunity for Wikimedia communities to engage The Met's diverse Asian collections onsite and remotely.
Attendees should bring their own laptops and power cords. Light snacks, drinks and cake will be provided. We also welcome remote participation for the global online Wikipedia Asian Art Month, running November 1-30.
