Singaporean family history

Jacklee, I see you're interested in family history and in Singapore, and I wonder if you could give me any tips. My maternal grandmother's family lived in Singapore at the end of the 19th century. They were Jewish and came there probably from Baghdad, circa 1850's. I have been trying to trace them there, but can find nothing in the records available on the internet. Do you know to whom I might be able to address inquiries in Singapore? Is there a sort of GRO there? Any help would be most appreciated. Nick Michael (talk) 19:48, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi, Nick. Your project sounds very interesting. Here are some suggestions:

• If members of your grandmother's family died or were buried in Singapore, you might try applying to the Births and Deaths Unit of the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority to see if extracts from the Register of Deaths can be obtained. I believe applications can be made online. If a death certificate can be found, it will have information such as the cause of death and date and place of burial, which will provide leads for further inquiries to be made.

• The National Archives of Singapore has a website called a2o (Access to Archives Online), where you can conduct online searches for records held there. It will help if you have an idea of what sort of records you are looking for (burial records and shipping lists, for instance).

• Post a message on the Singapore Heritage Yahoo! group. Members of the community are usually enthusiastic about helping people with their inquiries.

• Your ancestors may have attended services at one of the synagogues in Singapore, which might hold records that refer to them. You might try contacting the Jewish Welfare Board to see if they can provide any leads. Their contact details are as follows:

Current time in your signatures?

Please don't use the current time in your signatures. There is absolutely no reason to do this – the timestamp is used to tell when a comment was made. If all your comments have the same timestamp, then it will defeat this purpose. Gary King (talk) 03:43, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

Whoops, sorry. To save on typing, I created a template at {{User:Jacklee/shortsig}} and had been substituting it, but it seems I misunderstood the purpose of {{CURRENTTIME}} and allied magic words. At the top of every Talk page, it gives the following suggestion:

This is a talk page. Please respect the talk page guidelines, and remember to sign your posts by typing four tildes (~~~~).

This will generate your signature and a timestamp. If you've seen other people insert timestamps, then I would imagine you would assume that there must be an easy way for others to do it besides doing something complicated and building your own template to insert it? Well, you see, I created a fancy signature (like yours, actually) which uses different colours, and typing four tildes inserts that one. However, because that signature tends to take up three lines of wikitext, to avoid bloating GA and FA review pages where I'm likely to use the signature multiple times, I thought I would create a more basic one. However, I didn't realize that {{CURRENTTIME}} and allied magic words would insert constantly changing dates and times. Singaporean ink painters as independent category

Hi Jack, thanks for putting Category:Singaporean ink painters under Category:Singaporean painters. I had created the ink painter category to seperate the painters who professes in Chinese or Muslim painting techniques which uses ink as their primary medium, from the painters using primarily Western mediums - hence the Category: Singaporean painters. It would be wrong to categorise ink painters under the Singaporean painters category, and I believe other comments about this categorization, from other users will follow when this Singaporean artists category becomes more and more developed, and receiving more readership awareness.

So i'm hoping you'd change the Singaporean ink painter category to its original main category, instead of being a subcategory. Thanks -- Marcuslim (talk) 04:34, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

I see. Your suggested differentiation between Category:Singaporean ink painters and Category:Singaporean painters is not obvious to other editors. If you believe that the new category is going to grow substantially, I think it needs to be renamed to something like "Category:Singaporean ink painters using Chinese and Muslim painting techniques". However, personally think that there's not much point drawing a distinction between artists who paint using ink in Chinese and Muslim styles, and those who paint in the same medium using other styles; it seems like an overly narrow category. I would suggest not renaming the new category but widening its remit to include Singaporean ink painters who use other painting techniques (e.g., Western?). Also, I would leave Category:Singaporean ink painters as a subcategory of Category:Singaporean painters because ink painting seems a natural subtopic of painting in general. This issue may require input from other editors to gain a consensus. I've copied this discussion over to Category talk:Singaporean ink painters, and would suggest that you raise the issue at Talk:SGpedians' notice board and perhaps the talk page of a relevant art WikiProject, inviting them over to the category talk page to express their views. — Cheers, JackLee ^–talk– 09:50, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice
