Protection of old newspaper articles

I'm not exactly sure why you're protecting all of these. Looking at them, most of them have no history of vandalism or any updates past publishing so this seems like preemptive protection which policy doesn't support. ― Blaze WolfTalkblaze__wolf 03:08, 6 January 2024 (UTC)

It sure lit up my watchlist. Chris Troutman (talk) 03:09, 6 January 2024 (UTC)
I semiprotected them. Newspaper articles, in general, are not edited after publication except in extenuating circumstances (i.e. typo fixes, major errors or retractions immediately after publication) -- the only real modifications that should be made to these pages are lint fixes, metadata modification, image renames and the like, all of which are carried out by bot or script runs. Substantive edits shouldn't be getting made to these pages anyway, they're archives. If anybody tried to substantively edit these pages they'd be reverted anyway; archives aren't supposed to be refactored or edited, especially not when they're newspaper articles. Talk page archives use the __NOEDITSECTION__ tag for a similar reason. The only consequence of having them not be semiprotected is that there are some six thousand and change articles to monitor, in case one of them gets blanked (i.e. Special:Diff/1193682526, Special:Diff/1193682472), and if a vandalism falls off RC (which has retention of about 30 days give or take) it's just completely undetectable. When I was cleaning up Signpost stuff last January, I found a couple vandalisms that had been untouched for several years. jp×g🗯️ 03:28, 6 January 2024 (UTC)
While I understand, both of those instances were handled by a simple block. WP:PREEMPTIVE says that we generally don't preemptively protect pages except in specific circumstances. I don't really see the point in protecting them simply because of the rare chance they're vandalized. ― Blaze WolfTalkblaze__wolf 03:43, 6 January 2024 (UTC)
I think PREEMPTIVE is aimed at mainspace articles or pages that it is reasonable to assume will need updating. Old signpost articles, as JPxG said, should not see any real modifications aside from minor edits, which are most likely to be completed by autoconfirmed editors. The chance of vandalism is higher than a non-autoconfirmed user or IP making a minor technical improvement, so protecting them has a higher potential benefit than not protecting them. ––FormalDude (talk) 03:59, 6 January 2024 (UTC)

Out of curiosity

Hey JPxG. I was just wondering how you pronounce your username. I've been pronouncing it as jay-pex-gee in my head, but that's a rather obscure pronunciation, and I'd just like to know, since I've been thinking about it more than I probably should. Cheers! ‍ Relativity 21:15, 29 December 2023 (UTC)

Deleted two articles I wrote

Hello, yesterday I wrote two articles about companies dealing with artificial intelligence (D-ID and Perplexity.ai). Apart from being a teacher who uses these programs, I have no connection, business or otherwise, with them. As I presented in the sources, these are two articles that I understand from using Wikipedia for years, should exist here. How am I supposed to prove my "innocence"? And how do I transfer these two drafts to the article space? I would appreciate your help Galamore (talk) 07:15, 8 January 2024 (UTC)

Oracle Not Updating

I'm not sure if HooptyBot is misbehaving or there's something wrong with the data it pulls from, but User:JPxG/Oracle hasn't updated in a few days. The bot keeps editing the timestamps and query completion times, but isn't picking up new AFDs or updating existing ones. The WordsmithTalk to me 17:45, 9 January 2024 (UTC)

Probably sth is f'd up on a daily logpage which is making it crash when trying to parse. The main problem is that the code is bad, and written by a moron who didn't know how to make it be good. While he has been punished (I destroyed him and replaced him with myself, who is slightly better) the damage has been done and it crashes sometimes. jp×g🗯️ 19:07, 9 January 2024 (UTC)
No worries. What's he written in? I can try to take a look if you like and see if I can find the problem. The WordsmithTalk to me 21:39, 9 January 2024 (UTC)

Just to let you know….

…at least some of the auto-archiving templates you’re setting up seem to be missing the User talk: namespace prefix (e.g. [12]), causing the user talk pages in question to be sorted into Category:Pages where archive parameter is not a subpage. (Unless I’m misunderstanding something, which is always possible.)

All the best, ‍—‍a smart kitten[meow] 01:37, 16 January 2024 (UTC)

Congratulations! You have one of the longest user talk pages on the English Wikipedia!

This page is showing up as one of the longest user talk pages on Wikipedia (currently 20,799 bytes). I'm adding an archiver template so that it doesn't cause issues when people try to load it. This will make Lowercase sigmabot III fix it automatically. Cheers! ClueBot III (talk) 15:09, 10 February 2024 (UTC)

Signpost archive redirect deletion

Regarding the page Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/Archives/Years, I recreated it as an {{R from move}} because the previous page (now at Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/Archives) had previously been at that location for quite a while - as far as I can see, since its creation in 2007. I appreciate that all the internal links were re-pointed via JWB (in fact, one of those edits is how I found the previous title in the first place!); however, I’m concerned about the possibility of external links now being broken. All the best, ‍—‍a smart kitten[meow] 01:46, 17 January 2024 (UTC)

To extend on my message above, I was wondering if you would mind explaining why you G6ed the redirect, so that I can understand your reasons for doing so/why you think the redirect shouldn't exist. From my perspective, it seems like an {{R from move}} that should exist per WP:R#K4. (Looking back, I think my previous message may have been poorly worded, for which I apologise.) All the best, ‍—‍a smart kitten[meow] 16:04, 24 January 2024 (UTC)
FYI, I've opened a deletion review regarding the deletion of this redirect. Best, ‍—‍a smart kitten[meow] 18:52, 31 January 2024 (UTC)

Hi there! I monitor Category:Pages which use a template in place of a magic word and see that User:JPxG/sandbox99 has been in that category for a few days. I believe it's because of the {{PAGESIZE}} at the top of the page. When you have a moment, could you please take a look at that page? Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 18:02, 19 January 2024 (UTC)

Signpost newsroom transclusion

Is there something we have to do to poke the bot to start transcluding newsroom talkpage items that start with 20-02? I noticed that the new talk page section links from the issue status page try to create a 20-01 topic, which would be the previous issue unless I'm really mixed up. ☆ Bri (talk) 22:57, 24 January 2024 (UTC)

Complaint: Questionable actions of a User on AfD and the RSN

I hope this message finds you well. :)

Issue/BLUF: I had a run-in with a user who I believe is either WP:NOTHERE or does not understand policy. I would appreciate if you a) told me this does not reach the point of taking actions, b) took actions or c) referred me to an adequate enforcement mechanism, depending on your assessment of the situation.

Evidence: I think this page speaks for itself User talk:NadVolum.

I encountered 2 specific issues myself.

1. they referred to media as “run by jews”. While not in a clearly malicious context, Source, the interaction isn’t great:  :::Euro-Med has not gone in for full blown unedited passing on of anti semitic stuff like Mondoweiss. I think it is quite interesting how Mondoweiss is actually run by jews as far as I know. If they can believe the rape denial business then they really are pissed off about and think the worst of Israel! so what are we to think is exceptional? I've given up wondering if an atrocity there is exceptional but I'm happy enough with needing two reasonably independent sources. NadVolum (talk) 19:44, 19 January 2024 (UTC)

"run by jews"'? Coretheapple (talk) 17:25, 20 January 2024 (UTC)
I don't think the ethnoreligious background of people who run or edit these publications is worth making claims or implications about or trying to dissect. In determining reliability, we focus on the content of sources. P-Makoto (she/her) (talk) 21:28, 20 January 2024 (UTC)

Their reaction It hadn't occurred to me that being called an american or a christian could be taken as slurs. I'm sorry I offended anyone. I was not determining reliability by whether Jews ran it. was not great, but also not horrible.

2. Logically incompatible voting probably only explainable by either not understanding policy or ignoring it.:

  1. 13:31, 21 January 2024 - At WP:RSN, says I see no reason to use them, and suggests they peddle in conspiracy theories
  2. 18:23, 21 January 2024 - At Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor (2nd nomination), suggests it is suitable to contribute to notability
  3. 23:45, 22 January 2024 - At WP:RSN, !votes to deprecate the source.

When asked about it, he responded with (days later): Actually I was interested in seeing what kind of response the people who push for NGO Monitor being counted as a reliable site would make when it is used to support having a site they want to remove!, which isn’t great. He also states below: Well actully I wouldn't consider NGO Monitor as a reliable source for anything. FortunateSons (talk) 12:41, 25 January 2024 (UTC)

Sorry about the formatting, I’m still figuring that out.
Thank you in advance for taking the time, @JPxG. FortunateSons (talk) 12:43, 25 January 2024 (UTC)

Solar eclipse mass redirection?

Hello, JPxG. About two weeks ago, there was some discussion on VPP about the phenomenon of Wikipedia having hundreds of short articles on very similar topics when fewer articles or a list would suffice. See Wikipedia:Village pump (policy)#Do we really need over 600 articles on individual Samsung products? Following up on the sentiments expressed in that discussion, and the previous AfD, I wanted to know your thoughts on the idea of merging/redirecting various eclipse articles sourced only to old news articles and NASA databases to their respective List of solar eclipses (by year) lists. If implemented, this would result in 90-95% or so of all eclipse articles being redirected. I thought to propose this idea to you first given your participation in the AfD and your interest in editing and improving various eclipse articles. regards, TryKid[dubiousdiscuss] 04:46, 30 January 2024 (UTC)

Should I try publishing today?

Hi, I see you're active at Signpost pages today, and I assume you will declare the issue ready to publish later. I wonder if it would make sense for me to do the actual publishing on your go-ahead? It's been a while since I did, and maybe giving the scripts a test run would give us more confidence that there are two people who can do it?

If the answer is yes, please let me know what script to use; my configuration is still pointing to User:Evad37/SPS.jsBri (talk) 19:06, 30 January 2024 (UTC)

@Bri: That is busted now -- the forked version that's updated to support the new features and etc etc is at User:JPxG/SPS.js. I think it's a good idea to validate that the thing can work on a variety of machines without anything exploding, so if you want to publish I'd be happy to stand watch and make sure everything parses out okay. jp×g🗯️ 22:37, 30 January 2024 (UTC)
Okay, let's go with that plan. I'll replace the script in my common.js with yours. Can you mark the items "ready to publish" (Final-approval=yes) as you see fit, then give me a signal when you think the issue is ready? ☆ Bri (talk) 22:46, 30 January 2024 (UTC)
