Enwiki is partially available on the toolserver now, yayyyyy. [1] It's not replicating right this moment, and there's probably a couple days of replag on it, and it's not visible to users quite yet (due to some internal issues, if it's important, I can see about working around it). But I can definitely do manual queries (like list of articles created, for instance). Yaayyyyy.

Thanks to DaBpunkt and Twincest and all for helping get the toolserver working again. They're importing the data for the other servers (importing it all over again) now, and when that's finished, they'll resume replication. --Interiot 00:11, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

I don't believe the edit counter is working properly. It is currently claiming to have a lag time of 2-3 days, but none of my edits since 00:22, 26 December 2006 (UTC) (a full 10 days) has been counted since it was restarted. I've checked every few days, but the count remains fixed at 9850, even though, with this edit, I have coincidentally just passed 10,000. (Yay!) Is the lag message incorrect, or is there some other reason for this apparent discrepancy? Thanks for any info. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 08:12, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

There's a different replag for each database cluster. Dewiki and others have a replag of 2-3 days, but enwiki's replag is currently at 18 days. (enwiki and dewiki used to be in the same database cluster, but enwiki split off earlier this year) --Interiot 14:38, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

There's no indication on their armenica.org photos that they have any new information on copyright. If you are in email contact with Armenica.org, please forward that mail on to permissions-en AT wikimedia DOT org ASAP. Spellings

Please do not revert corrected spellings back to incorrect versions. Wikipedia clearly favours the incorrect regional dialect of the Americans.

First, Merry Christmas. Second, hope you're feeling better, as an appendectomy can't have been fun. Third, I saw your edit to the edit counter project page, and it caused me to check your tool, which caused me to notice (and hence, mention) a couple things:

• You might want to remove the flashing message about no replication.
• Since we're likely to have a replag delay, if you want to keep the link to other non-db based tools, the new link for my edit counter is http://countervandalism.org/Count.php.
• Is the deleted edit tool working now as well (I checked and it looks like it is, but I wanted to be sure).

Any idea

I've run across a few people (myself included) that have companies that will donate cash to organizations that their employees donate their time to. As wiki is a 5013(c) org, the WMF could be getting cash from my company for my edits! Now, here's the harder part: in order to get checks issued, there has to be a time-sheeting type functioe.g.

Something as simple as that would do, then throw on a WMF logo, some verbiage, and voila a check! I'm thinking that a tool that could scrape the contributions of someone and compute a "Start time" and "stop time" for each editing session would be the way to start (with a log routine of "on edit CLOCK IN" "after x mins of no edits CLOCK OUT") {I know this would miss the times being used for writign up a 10 page FA from scratch and uploading it, but for me I do mostly maintenance work so it wouldn't hit me}. Any idea if there is something like this out there already?

That concept sounds very curious/odd. (one would think employers don't want employees editing Wikipedia on their time to begin with... but anyway...) No, I don't know of a program that does that currently, but of course it shouldn't be hard to make an edit counter does that. If you want, I can look into seeing whether there's a fast query that will let it be done on the toolserver (eg. if/when the toolserver is working 100%, it might be something that only takes a few seconds to run). --Interiot 19:39, 26 December 2006 (UTC)

They don't want us editing on their time, but these programs offer incentives for non-profit/commnuity contributions done on our own time. Um, as soon as Flcelloguy's Tool can spit out a CSV (final beta testing in Excel, and poking AySz88 to do the GUI soon), the employers can do anything with it... :) and of course, someone could upload it to the toolserver and have it print out a pretty contributions report, including hours of use each day (from first edit to last edit in the day), to total contributions, to even total number of pages contributed to. Is there anyway i can delete them myself?

You can add {{db-author}} to any image you've uploaded, and a random administrator should delete it within a few hours at most.

It's usually not easy to verify whether specific Wikipedia user owns an outside website... someone from Armenica.org could upload to Wikipedia, but they'd have to do the same things you have to do... either 1) modify the website to note the material is available under a GFDL-compatible license, or 2) forward an email from the copyright holder to the wikimedia foundation, saying that the image is available under a GFDL-compatible license. --Interiot 06:43, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

If it's not clear the images are GFDL compatible, then they really shouldn't be uploaded. If an email from the copyright holder has been forwarded to permissions-en(at)wikimedia(dot)org confirming the images are GFDL compatible despite what their website says, then it's okay to upload. I still can't see why you can't use the maps as they are? Surely you can upload the images under wiki with GFDL rights without any changes as long as our name and URL is mentioned.

In case you haven't read the rules you can read the copy rights at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Copyrights#Using_copyrighted_work_from_others

Uploading images under GFDL does not mean that the images can be altered at will, but as they put it with "fair use". As long as our name is present and any user ask us for permission for any alteration of the material, than its OK. Otherwise we will be held responsible for possible errors and misinformation if someone alters our maps with faulty data and our name on it.

Please feel free to upload any map to wikipedia as GFDL material and make sure that our name and URL is mentioned.

Short answer: "you can't modify it without permission from Armenica.org" isn't GFDL compatible, period, end of story.

Long answer: Armenica.org images could be uploaded under fair use, but they'd almost certainly be deleted soon via {{replaceable fair use}}, since we limit the number of fair use images we use to places where we really have to (eg. such as the very historic Pulitzer prize winning Image:TrangBang.jpg). (fair use photographs aren't GFDL compatible... however, we do make allow a small number of non-GFDL photographs to be posted on Wikipedia when 1) those photographs are really necessary, and 2) we realize the photograph likely won't ever be available in GFDL)

It's better for us to create our own maps and take our own photos if someone won't allow us to improve theirs. If you need maps made, please use {{reqmap}} or ask at Wikipedia:WikiProject Maps/Requested and orphan maps or Wikipedia:Graphic Lab/Images to improve. --Interiot 17:26, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

Inkscape is one I'm familiar with, and it produces SVG maps which are helpful, because others can modify them more easily. It takes time and skill to create maps that look as good as what Armenica.org has, but Wikipedia already has a few to start with... for instance, you can save these as .svg on your local computer and start changing colors and text pretty easily... Image:Armenia map numbered.svg and Image:Armenia locater map armavir.svg. I'd be happy to answer any questions about Inkscape, I've been playing with it a fair bit lately, and the person who drew those maps (User:Bastique) probably knows even more. --Interiot 20:24, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

Okay, I *think* it's fixed now. There's still a difference (Tool1 is ahead of Tool3 by 187 edits right now), but that's probably because the toolserver's database is lagging by several days. The "stuck at 5000" problem I fixed was caused by some non-English issues, which is a relatively new feature of Tool1, it previously was able to only count edits on English sites. --Interiot 23:40, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

This is just so that you can upload the maps, but I stil don't see any reasons why you will need to edit the maps, since they have been used and are currently used in several wikipedia versions as they are.

1. Make sure there's at least one armenica.org image uploaded on Wikipedia, and that image should clearly mention it's from armenica.org
2. If you could forward the original email as an attachment, and at the same time, mention the name of the Armenica.org image on Wikipedia

Well, there's still the question of whether Armenica.org owns the copyright to every single image on their website, but we can tackle that question another day. It would be okay if Vardion is the copyright holder, the one who created the image. That's somewhat doubtful though since it appears to have come from armenianhighland.com.

An acceptable copyright tag would be: 1) if armenianhighland.com is the one who owns the copyright to the image, then either point to a page on their site that clarifies what their copyright is (the site doesn't say "all rights reserved" everywhere, but US law says we have to assume that's what their copyright terms are), or forward an email from armenianhighland.com owners saying that they license the image under a GFDL-compatible image.

Or, 2) if armenianhighland.com isn't the copyright owner of the page, then state who armenianhighland.com got it from, and determine whether the original person might have released it under the GFDL. --Interiot 01:52, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

Differences between User contributions and User edit counter?

Hi Interiot,
when I look at my own user contributions I can count about 7 edits in December 2006 and about 13 edits in January 2007, until Jan. 5th. But when I start the counter there is stated Total edits=2 (Replication lag is currently 1 day, 18 hours.=until Jan 5th, 4:27pm UTC). Can you explain the difference? What do I wrong?

There's multiple replication lags, one for each database cluster. Enwiki replag is currently stuck at December 20th, at which point you only had two edits. --Interiot 17:50, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

First edit

Until ca. 2004 there was a bug, which has been fixed but not retroactively, as follows:

If a moved page is moved back, the edit history of the page with the intermediate title shows the latest move only, with the corresponding user name, but with the date and time of the first move(!).

Therefore, if the oldest entries in the user contributions list are moves, they most likely do not represent any activity of the user on the stated dates.--Patrick 15:06, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

The move log is not that old, but for determining the first edit, edits with a summary starting with "moved to" could be discarded, see e.g. at the bottom of [7].--Patrick 16:41, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

Data deviation?

I've made two editcounts today with your editcounter and Essjay's PHP editcounter respectively, but they gave results of 4896 and 5075 respectively. Since the stated replication lag is just 1d12h and I definitely have made less than 50 edits within the past 36 hours, there must be some problem with either of the data.

After some comparison with the memory in my brain, I suspect that your edit counter has miscounted some edits. About two weeks ago I checked your edit counter and the article namespace had more than 2000 edits. However, this number has dropped below 1980 as of today. Since I had not been notified of any deletion and I've made some tens of edits into the article namespace within the past two weeks, it is presumable that the actual recrement of article namespace editcount cannot exceed 20 within this 2-week interval. Please check out any problem with the editcount system and I look forward to your reply. --Deryck C. 14:36, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

For the difference between mine and Essjay's, see above, there's multiple replags. Enwiki's replag is currently 14 days.

For the decreasing mainspace edits, it's possible that there's a bug in the back-end database, but it's somewhat doubtful, and there's not really specific enough information to examine the possible issue. --Interiot 16:48, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

Where are they approved at? The copyright info on the images may be insufficient... they don't specify the copyright holder.

As far as I know, armenianhighland.com doesn't indicate anywhere that its images are available under public domain or the GFDL or creative commons. Edit counter suggestion

Hello Interiot,

Your edit counter is pretty cool! I was wondering if it would be possible to implement another calculation: average edits per day, excluding days when edits were not made.

That is,

(totalEdits)/(currDate - firstEditDate - numDaysNoEdits)

where

totalEdits     is the total number of edits (already calculated by your tool),
currDate       is the current date,
firstEditDate  is the date a user's first edit was made,
numDaysNoEdits is a counter which adds 1 for every day no edit exists

All parameters should be stored as integers.

It is the last parameter, numDaysNoEdits which prevents me from writing this code myself—I am not familiar with how Wikipedia stores edit information, so I don't know how to check for days when edits are not made. (Also, I am not a great programmer, so my implementation might be inefficient even if I do learn how to check.)

The little replication indicator says the toolserver is replicated up to 2007/01/02 22:34 as of now. So, as of Jan 2nd, your account didn't exist, which is accurate. Meso People

Just a quick note, I strongly believe that the Paul Krauss thing is a subtle attempt at marketing his book. I lost my father to meso a year ago, and I think marketing Meso is criminal. Because of that I'm generally against anything that smells like marketing on the meso page. (Or anywhere, actually.) However, I'm impressed with this group's tenacity and moreso that they seem to be actively trying to do the right thing with respect to Wikipedia. They aren't fly-by-night linkspammers. I think they could be worthwhile contributors, and so I've been offering them offhand support.

Edit counter and time spent

Hello,
I was thinking about a tool that could give me an approximation of the time spent on Wikipedia.
I think it is possible to calculate an approximation based per contributions.
If you consider that a user is present on Wikipedia 5 minutes before each contribution, and between two contributions separated by no more than 20 minutes the contributor was still on Wikipedia, it could be possible to "approximatively" know how much time a wikipediholic has spent on Wikipedia and find an appropriate treatment for him :)

It's possible, though I don't know of a way to do it quickly enough to include it in my normal (Tool3) edit counter. Any HTML scraping counter should be able to calculate it without much more slowdown though. Deleted edits

Which query were you using to count deleted edits? I know it became really slow, and while looking at Extension:DeletedContributions, it dawned on me that it could have become slow if there was a custom index on the toolserver's archive table, which was deleted upon a dump replay of enwiki. It's just SELECT COUNT(*) FROM archive WHERE ar_user_text=$username. I don't know, the entire toolserver was slow earlier. I've activated it now for the weekend at least, it seems to be working better for my editcount anyway. --Interiot 23:24, 20 January 2007 (UTC)

Mitsubishi i

I've been slowly working on this page over time, and it's reached the point where I think it meets the criteria of a Good Article, although with two copyrighted fair use images and only 13k of content, it's well short of being FA. The biggest trouble with expanding the article is that the car was only released 12 months ago, so I'm still waiting on a lot of info to become available (e.g. production/sales figures).

I didn't want to throw it open to the whole motley AutoProject community, some of whom may be compelled to "improve" the article by replacing metric with imperial measurements, adding badly laid out galleries of the rear of the car, reams of technical information in tabular or bulleted format, and expounding at length on the North American market perspective. Instead, I thought I'd just test the water by canvassing the opinions of some random auto editors who don't seem obsessed with making WP a Buyers' Guide.

Anyway, you think it's worth taking Mitsubishi i through the WP:GA nomination process?

Though note that [17] says that politico.com journalists were on CBS with Katie Couric to analyze the State of the Union speech. Tool2 doesn't work very well on non-English sites currently. It looks like the site supports &uselang=en (thanks again for suggesting it, Titoxd], though Tool2 doesn't yet work with it. Transwikied articles

What should be done with articles that have been transwikied? Barn find, for instance, was a dicdef that I prodded (and maybe shouldn't have). I've been cleaning out Category:Orphaned articles from June 2006 and have run into several dicdefs. If these are transwikied, can they be speedy deleted or do they have to be prodded? Hrm, I'm not really clear on transwikiing yet, I've got more questions than answers, I'm afraid. I guess it's easier if transwiki is decided via AfD, because then {{db-transwiki}} will let the article be deleted right after it's transwikied. Otherwise, Wikipedia:Transwiki log says an article can be proded after the article has been transwikied. Though I have no idea how wiktionary decides whether it fits their inclusion criteria, and if they reject it, how we make sure it doesn't get deleted here. Yes, Wikipedia:Image use policy#Rules of thumb says "2. Always specify on the description page where the image came from". Feature requests

Hi! Sorry that I (may be) disturb you with my requests.

1. Could you add some graphs to the edit counter? They will show more private information (but anyway, it's available from user contributions page), so, I think, there is a need in something like "OptIn level 2".

1. A graph that shows daily activity of the user (something kinda this, but about number of edits;
2. Same graph for the weekly activity;
3. ~ for the monthly activity.

1. I think it will be especially useful when replication lag will hit zero.

2. AFAIK, it's easy to get number of bytes added/removed in each edit. Could you write a tool that shows the report like the edit counter does, but on the bytes added/removed, and with same opt-in(s) and graph(s)?

P.S. I've changed your picture on the top of this page to the cropped version. Do you agree that it's not necessary to download the whole picture when only top 100px are used, don't you? And sorry that I've taken your idea to my talk page. :) I think I'll take a new picture soon (and, probably, one especially for you... if you need ;)).

Hmm… try to imagine a curve plotter. It will raise up when user contributes, and will fall down when user is inactive. These graphs will show "personal" information, that's why something like "opt-in 2" is required. It will be userful for some purposes, e.g. for analyzing the user's contributions more effeciently.

What's about second feature… You know that many people take an edit count as an estimation of user's works on Wikipedia, that is not actually so. (And "Zen Wisdom" on the bottom of the page doesn't help :() Someone saves page 5 times per minute, fixing only several letters, someone spends hours making one big edit. Count of bytes that user had added (removed? :)) to Wikipedia (or any other wiki) is more objective quantity. Of course, if there are images and media, they will (probably) outdo them all, but it's not a problem because edits (creations, uploads) will be separated by sections (*** bytes added/removed in mainspace, *** in images, *** in categories, […]). (All you need is to copy the edit counter and change the values to bytes). A base of this method is the number of bytes that is represented, e.g., in recent changes, like (+87) or (-17 318) (omg, another vandal...).

In truth, I was unaware of that criteria for speedy deletion, though I'd be lying if I said I thought the redirect was totally legitimate. No problem. I just ran a script that found all cross-namespace redirects, see User:Interiot/xnr for its output. For what it's worth, everything on Wikipedia gets downloaded by a variety of people on a weekly/monthly basis, and there are scrapers that duplicate the content elsewhere, so everything here gets at least minimal exposure. If you intend it to get less exposure, you may consider hosting it on a server that doesn't get quite so much traffic. --Interiot 08:09, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

Actually, they aren't prohibited... WP:CSD#R2 only mentions User:, User talk:, and Talk: spaces, since that's all we have clear consensus for at this point. Also see User:Interiot/cross-namespace redirects#Wikipedia:, where there's lots of other XNR's. Personally, I think it should be obvious why cross-namespace redirects are mere clutter that need to be cleaned up, and that for every supposed benefit to XNR's, there's a better way to do it, but apparently not everyone sees it that way. --Interiot 01:37, 18 February 2007 (UTC)

Editcounter l

Hello. A thought has crossed my mind when one of the Polish Wikipedia users asked me about editcounters in the local language - have you ever considered translating it into at least those languages which have the largest Wikimedia projects? I've considered it, though I don't have any experience doing localization, either in C or Perl. I guess [20] [21] [22] are decent documents to read that may help me get started. And [23] [24] [25] are various frameworks that can help. Okay, I'll look into whether I can implement the code changes.

Lists redirected to categories

Hi - This is probably not the place to discuss it, but it strkes me that redirecting lists to categories generally shouldn't be considered to be a problem (re User:Interiot/cross-namespace redirects). Can you think of where this actually should be discussed (perhaps WP:VPP?)? -- Rick Block (talk) 19:54, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

The existence of the list doesn't mean any of the redirects are necessarily a problem (though WP:CSD#R2 does say that specific ones are clearly not wanted, and I think that sometimes it's clear that individual redirects were created as a mistake). Other than those two examples, there hasn't been clear consensus for deleting other types of cross-namespace redirects (see WP:CNR).

Cross-namespace redirects have been discussed in the past at WP:CSD, WP:RFD, and WP:CNR so perhaps there's some discussion in those artchives. Edit count far off

My edit count displays 25 edits. I have almost 250. I can't figure out why my edit counter is stil lso far off or how to fix this (If I can fix it on my own). What do I do? --Scorpios 03:13, 12 March 2007 (UTC)

As the blinking red section at the top notes, enwiki data is only replicated up to 1/22/2007. At that point, you did only have a few edits. Until the toolserver starts replicating enwiki data faster, you may wish to use a different edit counter, such as this one. --Interiot 03:19, 12 March 2007 (UTC)
