Francis Drake
Hello Hu Nhu, Thank you for your question and interest in what I also find a fascinating era, specifically that of early Colonialism. Drake was, to put it simplistically, almost singularly sent out by Queen Elizabeth I (or more realistically her advisors) to break the Portuguese (and for a time joint Spanish) monopoly on Pepper, which was one of the most important spices of the time, and most expensive, as it was a key ingredient in preserving food within Europe. In fact, it was used in re-placement of gold or silver to pay taxes for probably 150-200 years, mainly throughout the 16th and 17th centuries. To hand I do not have my resources and sources available, but they are within my storage system, as I am an undergraduate of political science and modern history as a mature aged student (long story) at present. I will endeavour to find some of the key academic works on this from my previous papers on the history of colonisation within South Eastern Asia, East Asia, and Central Asia from the days of Da Gama onwards to give you some key readings that I consider seminal on the topic.
