Your comments
Speaking of "telling" - "The world was a better place with you in it, and you leave great things behind."
I read your comments and I have to say that that applies to you too. You have, in my opinion done great things on Wikipedia.
I dunno if I ever felt "like a yapping dog" with you, though, lol - you always worked to make everyone welcome to the conversation - but you had and have now, my respect. And it always makes me smile when I see you show up to edit, when you do.
I know it's the way of the world that those now rarely know or understand the work put in, in the past, to making things what they are today. But I think,in some ways, we're a little poorer for the losses of the many who have gone.
Anyway, just saw a friend from days gone by (you), and just thought they should hear how special they were too.
Incidentally, here's my post to that page: [2]
I wish you well, and as always, if you would like help collaborating on, well, pretty much anything, please let me know : ) - jc37 17:37, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks. I may have some time for this place again soon, if I can work out how and for what. Everyone is a yapping dog somewhere to someone somehow, and after I summoned that image on discovering User:SlimVirgin was gone and trying to place our relationship, such as it was and what little meaning it had to most but in that moment what it meant to me was all that mattered and I likely irritated her more than I would have cared or meant to do, but certainly I felt small in her presence at times, similarly with User:DGG. The last time I tried editing here in earnest was a time when I realised that beyond my children what I have worked here may be my legacy, such that it is and as nameless as it will be. And to know I touched you, as nameless and anonymous as you are, is a big thing to know, so thanks for passing that on. I know the old gang at WP:COMICS thought of me, and sometimes quite highly, and on occasion I have lost my temper and been mean but even that has been forgiven and forgotten by many if not all. I also know at a time I was highly considered and could likely have been a 'crat, and that is knowledge enough. When I go, I hope someone in my family lets you all know, and that these words can adorn my user page; and that my essays and templates and article edits and policy tweaks can still be of use, even if not very many people now would mourn. I always think twice a year when my notification bell clangs like crazy such as it is now that the article I will end up being remembered for is Transfer window. Such a silly little thing that didn't exist until it did, and I played only a small part,[3] like the creator of the article Wayne Rooney who summed it up better [4] for me. I remember using that edit in an argument somewhere regarding a claim to notability and a claim to authorship. It all seemed so vital then, but look on my works ye mighty, and despair. Who watches the watchmen, who keeps wikipedians in check? We're always poorer for those that go, but richer for those that come. Already my head boggles with the idea that a combination of technology that is thought controlled combined with AI creation will become the way we deliver content to ourselves in the future... Huh, if these do get posted up as my last words I should really try and create something profound. You're a good person, User:Jc37. Hiding T 18:21, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
- WikiProject Comics wouldn't be what it is if not for you (and others, of course, but you were a central force for updating it, and set a tone that I think still endures today).
- As for me personally, every time people start talking about adminship, in whatever way they are, I am reminded how, through poking and prodding, you pushed me forward and helped me toss a hat into the ring. And even when I foolishly stumbled that first time around, you helped me up, dusted me off and a few months later helped me through the door again.
- I've tried to follow your example, and have - I hope - helped others on that journey. (Pppery being the most recent). But I always wish I had the time (and sigh - energy) to do more.
- I've had so many here that I might call mentors, but you definitely stand out to me. In boldly editing articles, in categorisation, in XFD, in policy and guidelines, in WikiProject development, even in the more advanced template editing. I'd look at something and you'd nudge and helped give me the confidence to go ahead. Never really like that of course. Just you led by example, and made Wikipedia such a welcoming place. The belief in good faith, and that we're all in this together. I look at the craziness and divisiveness we have now, and am reminded of the big fights back then, and yet people like you and others helped bring people together. Your visionary, seemingly unrelenting, belief, in the importance of working together to truly find consensus amongst editors, and more, how you would humbly change what you do, when consensus fell counter to what you were advocating. It really was a sight to behold. Calm, placid acceptance, and moving forward.
- I read a post by Risker recently, and it made me think of you and some others from the past. It was a bold new world that you all (I guess, in humility, we all) were trying to create. Success is varied, due to the fallibility of humankind. But, in hindsight (even with some of the aedificiary starting to calcify and not renew), I don't think things have turned out too badly. Which, I think is a testament to the hard work of the past having an eye towards the future.
- Anyway, thank you. I appreciate your friendship as well : ) - jc37 18:57, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
- Oh, and yes, I checked your links - you make me laugh, as always : ) - jc37 19:11, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
- @Jc37 You're welcome 😁 I'll try and work out a way of being of use again. I'll try and work out how to be a better friend. 🙂Hiding T 21:33, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
- Friendship is a merely a state of being. Can't get any better than that : )

Mangling the list structure on talk pages
Please do not ever do this. It is against Help:Talk pages#Indentation, and Wikipedia:Talk page guidelines#Good practices for talk pages, and Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Accessibility#Vertical lists. If someone post was a ****
line, then your reply is *****
, or ****:
if you don't want it to have a bullet. If the post before your reply had *::*:*:
, then your reply starts with *::*:*::
or *::*:*:*
if you want it to have a bullet. This is very simple: you just copy the format of what you are replying to, and add either one :
or one *
. We avoid bullets when there isn't a conventionalized expectation for them (e.g. in an RfC's polling section). — SMcCandlish ☏ ¢ 😼 04:35, 13 January 2024 (UTC)
