Editing Request
Hi, there-
I've been diligently working on my page (Margolis Brown Adaptors Company) and since you made some comments earlier, I would like to have your input and -if it's acceptable- your vote for it's survival or any advice you may have to improve it. Thanks!
Zena0727 19:05, 1 August 2007 (UTC)
- I'll definitely take a look at it. I notice the AfD debate has already closed, so congratulations on that. I'll come around soon. Hersfold (talk/work) 20:37, 5 August 2007 (UTC)
Here's your belated Barnstar star

AFC News
We are nine days away from the end of the drive, and it's been fantastic! Many, many, many days of backlog have been tackled, and over 1500 articles reviewed!
To start off, a HUGE THANKS to everyone who helped out with the coordination of the drive, and actually fighting the backlog in the drive itself. Everyone's done a great job helping out, no matter how many articles you've reviewed/
Remember to update your running total, on the drive page. This is the ONLY way that I will be able to give out awards appropriately.
Lastly, I will be giving out awards on August 16th. Anyone who could help me, that would be fantastic. Contact me on my talk page if you'd like to volunteer.
Great job, everyone! This Drive has been fantastic, and I'm sure that some members of the Project have definitely made friends by collaborating on the talk pages. Thanks,
GrooveDog.
Irregularity on AfD
I have completed the AfD nomination which has delete !votes. Don't close it now. PrimeHunter 13:12, 8 August 2007 (UTC)
- Don't worry, I wasn't going to close it, I was trying to figure out a way to indicate that the previous votes might not be legitimate. I guess I could have worded that better on the Help Desk, couldn't I have? Thanks for stepping in, though. Hersfold (talk/work) 13:17, 8 August 2007 (UTC)
- Fine. I moved your "Discussion continues here" to the time of addition to the AfD log [1] (sorry for misspelling you in the edit summary). The comments after that look legitimate. PrimeHunter 13:50, 8 August 2007 (UTC)
Do me a favor please...
Can you create a Barnstar of Peace using the U.N. flag? If not, it's ok. --Defender 911 (Leave a message!) 23:25, 9 August 2007 (UTC)
- I can certainly give it a shot! I suppose it is somewhat obvious what it'll be for, but do you have an "official" rationale for awarding it yet? I'll let you know as soon as I have one ready. Hersfold (talk/work) 01:38, 10 August 2007 (UTC)
- I'll use your favorite (and mine) as the Barnstar of Peace for resolving edit conflicts and disputes without banning them. Thanks for your time!! --Defender 911 (Leave a message!) 11:24, 10 August 2007 (UTC)
- No problem at all! Like I said, it's something I enjoy, and I'm quite flattered you came to me for it. As a note, I did tweak your award template a bit for consistency - There's only one parameter now for the message, but they can still have the original message you intended if they leave it blank. That's mainly so it doesn't confuse people when they go to use it. Thanks again, thank you for the barnstar, and as always, happy editing! Hersfold (talk/work) 13:48, 10 August 2007 (UTC)
From MOTD
Hi there. Just noticed in a comment you put on one of the mottos you were trying to remember an incident about an editor faking his credentials. I'm suspect you were thinking of the Essjay controversy, am I right? Confusing Manifestation 07:03, 10 August 2007 (UTC)

for creating 5 or more articles in the last 5 days of the AFC Backlog Drive that ends August 15, 2007. "It's much tougher to accept articles!" --Graeme Bartlett davidwr/(talk)/(contribs)/(e-mail) 04:19, 13 August 2007 (UTC) |
- Yay, thanks! Rather ironic, though, that Graeme has accepted more articles in the last week than the rest of us put together during the whole drive. Hersfold (t/a/c) 15:17, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
- It's impossible to know, but he's awfully close. He's accepted 98 articles, roughly 1 in 4. 1 in 4 is awfully high. I've been accepting around 5%. If everyone else averaged even 4%, it would still be over 140 articles for everyone else. I just hope they aren't being speedy'd away for non-notability or other quality reasons. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs)/(e-mail) 17:52, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
- I think several of them have been speedied - hence his question on the tally board. Oh well - as long as he doesn't get blocked for it, he's still clearing out some of the drive. Hersfold (t/a/c) 17:54, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
- I'm guessing 3 out of 4 of the ones he accepts are ones I'd reject. But as far as reviewed articles go, a speedy delete is the same as a reject, and it counts. As far as my last-5-days award goes, I think it's a moot point as far as this guy is concerned.
- Oh, yeah. There's bound to be at least five articles in there that stay up. Hersfold (t/a/c) 18:16, 13 August 2007 (UTC)

TOR proxies
Unfortunately, we keep TOR proxies hard blocked because otherwise it is too easy for sockpuppeteers to use the addresses to bypass the block. They also tend to be used for vandalism, but the hard block part is because of sockpuppeteers. This leaves people in China with basically no options to edit the Wikipedia. This is a known problem but essentially the problem lies with the Chinese government who have banned Wikipedia, I understand. --Yamla 15:10, 14 August 2007 (UTC)
- Oh, ok. Darn it. I guess the only option would then be to send them over to the Chinese Wiki? Hersfold (t/a/c) 15:13, 14 August 2007 (UTC)

- The article you created doesn't provide enough information about the school to justify having an article about it. You need to establish why the school is notable, and provide some other information about the article. For more information about how much information is enough, see WP:STUB and WP:CSD#A1. Damn
I was really hoping both of us would top 700 articles reviewed. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs)/(e-mail) 01:51, 16 August 2007 (UTC)
- Ah, we got close enough. We cleared out maybe 3/4 of the backlog - you managed to swipe that Gold Wiki Award away from me at the last minute (:-P) - and we've only a few months left that can be safely mass-moderated. We did good. Hersfold (t/a/c) 02:07, 16 August 2007 (UTC)
- I still disagree about "safely mass-moderating." Mass moderating still requires individual reviews, it just doesn't require an individual statement why an article is declined. It's not akin to "email bankruptcy," it's more like permission to say "these submissions are so old that it worth the trouble to explain my denial because nobody's going to read it anyways." I'm working on 4/27/06 and I've already marked well over a dozen for further review. If it hadn't been the last day I would've just created most of them. That's well over a dozen out of over 150 mind you. Another reason not to "declare bankruptcy" - I still see copyvios from time to time. These need to be dealt with. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs)/(e-mail) 02:26, 16 August 2007 (UTC)
- BTW, I didn't swipe it from you as much as you left the ring early. I was disappointed when I checked your contribs and didn't see a bunch of last-minute activity. Damn real life gets in the way every time, eh? davidwr/(talk)/(contribs)/(e-mail) 03:02, 16 August 2007 (UTC)

HOW
How do you get that thing that says if your ONLINE/OFFLINE? HIYO 20:56, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
- Hello! That's from User:StatusBot, an automated account that checks my contributions to see if I'm active. You can check the bot's userpage for more information, or just add {{User:StatusBot/Template}} to your user page. It takes a few minutes to start working properly, but once it does, it'll work just like mine does. Enjoy! Hersfold (t/a/c) 21:10, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
- How long exactly does it take to work. HIYO 21:20, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
- Usually about five minutes or so. The bot only updates every few minutes so it doesn't blow up the server. Hersfold (t/a/c) 21:21, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
- I have been here For 5 min. and it does not work. Did i enter it wrong? HIYO 21:46, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
- Looks like it's working to me. It says you're currently online. Hersfold (t/a/c) 22:03, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
- Really, because when I look at it it says Invalid Status. HIYO 22:06, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
- Click this link and see what happens. That should purge the server's cache. If that doesn't work, clear out your own browser's cache (in Firefox, CTRL+SHIFT+R). Hersfold (t/a/c) 22:09, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks, it work now. HIYO 22:11, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

Also, I'm ready for the copyvio lesson too (unless there's more cleanup).

Help!! Template:Lamu Archipelago
I was a bit over-optemistic, and tried to create Template:Lamu Archipelago. I turns out it is far more complicated than I thought. Basically, I´m trying to get what is in the "overview"-section in the different articles in Lamu Archipelago-series into *one* template, so the user can easily navigate between the different places. Can you help me? Regards, Huldra 14:12, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
- Sure. It sounds like you're trying to design a navigational template - are you looking for something that sits along the side of the page, like {{Deletiondebates}}, or something that sits at the bottom and is probably collapsable like {{Members of the European Union (EU)}}? I can look for the appropriate coding for each of those while I wait for your reply. Hersfold (t/a/c) 14:17, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
- Whaw, that was fast, and yes; I was thinking in line with: {{Deletiondebates}} (there are not *that* many islands int the archipelago) Thanks! Huldra 14:21, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
- ..I know I really messed up, and now I just got a phone so I have to go out for an hour or two, sorry, Huldra 14:24, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
- It's not a problem, you didn't do anything that's not easy enough to remove. I'll have a finished product to you in about an hour or so, at the most. Just so you know, since most of the villages don't have separate articles (yet), I'll put them in the template, but I won't make them links. I'll make it obvious that if someone wants to read about that village, they can go to the main article that includes it. If they get articles later, or you really feel the section links are necessary, you can add them in fairly easily. Hersfold (t/a/c) 14:29, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
- That is wonderful! Thanks! (I would have spent a week on that..) Just a couple of notes: I have tried to always use Lamu Archipelago ...and not Lamu Islands. This because it is sooo easy to mix up Lamu Island with Lamu Islands; it is not that easy to mix up Lamu Island with Lamu Archipelago. And yes, I know, I know: the Lamu Archipelago-article redirs to Lamu Islands, (hey, I didn´t start *any* of these articles; only tried to clean them up...;-)). Actually, Lamu Islands should probably be mv to Lamu Archipelago. But then you have to delete the present Lamu Archipelago first?
- Also: is it possible to get the villages listed in the template in the same sequence as in corresponding article? ..e.g. under Pate Island they are listed as: Faza, Pate Town, Siyu etc.
- Also: it is not immediate obvious, but the Rulers of Pate were *not* rulers over all of Pate Island (well, at least not usually); they were only rulers of Pate town. Faza and Siyu had its own dynasties (though less important than Pate town). Is it possible to get it to look so that Rulers of Pate is associated with (only) Pate town, and not the whole of Pate island?
- And finally: is it possible to get a smaller version of the map here ot the top of the template? Then one could at one glance see where in Kenya these islands are located. Anyway; you have already done more than I had hoped for! Thanks again! & regards, Huldra 16:52, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

- You don't have to delete the redirect, I don't think - you should be able to move the page there as it is. I'll set the title back anyway.
- I'll re-arrange the pages as you ask. The code's not really all that complex, it's just a glorified table.
- I'll try to add the map below the title. Hersfold (t/a/c) 17:25, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
- You were right; I could move it --and I have done so. As for "just a glorified table": some of us have never managed to make even a simple table ;-P .....I feel much more at home with, say, Swahili history, than those technical matters..
- Anyway: thank you very, very much for your good work: the different articles look soooo much better now (IMHO). Thanks again! Regards, Huldra 19:42, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
- You are right; I don´t think we have met before. I just knew I badly needed someone who knew about templates, I found http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:User_template_coder, decided I needed (at least!) a category 4 coder ("This user creates and edits templates, with flawless proficiency, and is considered a guru on the subject").. then checked who were listed at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:User_template_coder-4; and started with the first on the list: you!...But since your Statusbot showed offline I also went to the next user:Ling.Nut, but s/he was on wikibreak, so then I left a similar message on no. 3 instead (User:Nmajdan), who turned out not to be active just then. See, easy ;-) I am mostly a content-provider on east-African and ME (that is: Palestinian/Israeli) -articles. I cannot help anybody with anything technical, & I am a terrible speller (in any language), but if you ever need to have something translated from Swedish, Norwegian or Danish..then I will gladly be of assistance (I am Scandinavian) ..and I am not too bad in finding books/sources about issues outside mainstream interest (like Lamu...) Again, thank you! (And, hrm, if you are of "normal" college-age, then I am old enough to be your mother ;-)) Regards, Huldra 23:17, 22 August 2007 (UTC) (who is logging out: it is late in my part of the world)
help
ok, well i'm not sure exactly how to send or leave you messages but i hope this works...
you said posting an auto-biography is a bad idea, but if you search for Jeffree Star... what exactly would u classify that as?
--Keith McKenna 02:13, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
- I would classify that as a fairly neutral biography. I see no obvious evidence in the article history that Jeffree Star has made any significant contributions to that article - if he has, then I would appreciate it if you could point out those edits. I can't find a User:Jeffree Star either. Even if he has, that doesn't change the fact that writing an autobiography is a really bad idea. Hersfold (t/a/c) 02:26, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
ok, well i read the part where you said I can request a page be written about me..??
well who would want to write about me, i'm not famous or anything... so how would that work?
--Keith McKenna 02:29, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
- Take a look at our notability standards for people real quick and let me know if you think you meet any of them. Note that I only get one immediately useful hit for your name on Google, so things aren't looking too hopeful. Hersfold (t/a/c) 02:34, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
Hahaha, nope... I don't meet any of those standards...
to be quite honest with you what i'm trying to do is the whole "do-it-yourself" get famous (off the internet) type thing...
not sure if you know or not but SOOOO many people have been becoming famous by doing it themselves with either the help of youtube, or myspace... I have a myspace... but i've been slaving over trying to become at least "KNOWN" using something (anything!) =]
it's hard... and i'm still baffled at how others are doing it... so, that's the reason i wanted to make a auto-biography about myself.
any suggestions??
--Keith McKenna 02:41, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
- As a quick note, please stop adding new sections. It's a lot easier to keep things grouped together. Thanks.
- My suggestion would be to leave Wikipedia WAY out of your bid to become famous. We have a policy page titled "What Wikipedia is not", and it includes headings such as...
- We're definitely NOT the place for a "get famous quick" scheme, and attempting to do so here is a very good way to get yourself blocked. You're welcome to make helpful contributions to the project, but please don't use Wikipedia for your own personal promotion. It's a really bad idea. Hersfold (t/a/c) 02:49, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

- I don't recall attacking anyone, I just left a note asking you to not blank pages. If you'd like to have a page deleted in accordance with our deletion policies, you're more than welcome to do so. Unfortunately, blanking a page as you did can cause confusion and doesn't actually delete anything. I assure you, I'm not being anti-Croatian. I have no way of knowing who you are, and much less what ethnicity you are, without you telling me. I apologize if any of my actions have seemed rude, but I assure you that was not my intention.
- To avoid similar misunderstandings in the future, I would suggest you take a look at some of our policies and guidelines, the most relevant of which I've included below. Besides helping allieviate some confusion, they may help you become a better editor - I know I frequently refer to them myself, and I've been here the larger part of a year. If you've got the time, just scan through and see what it says. If you've still got questions about anything, please feel free to leave another - polite - message on my talk page. Happy editing. About User:212.50.168.9
By the way how you notify Mr. 212 to the administrators. Did you e-mail the school staff and school administrators to watch his contributions. I thought you are the administrators. You also tell him not to write insults on his talk page. I didn't see him write any insults on talk pages, but I saw him wrote alot of insults on article pages. I saw him write sorry but I don't think he is really sorry. He just insist on vandalising and do not take Wikipedia as a serious effect. Who is watching that IP? The school staff? Freewayguy789194 (Any questions? - My updates 20:44, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
- I didn't contact anyone at the school, we generally report vandals to the Wikipedia administrators at WP:AIV. I'm not sure if anyone in particular is watching the IP, but there's a large group or editors that patrols the rencent changes page to watch for vandals, and I assume that's where I noticed the IP vandalizing - I'm not sure, it was several months ago. Help Me - Protected Templates
{{helpme}}
Is there an administrator out there who can (a) answer my questions and (b) act upon my questions? Please advise. Thanks. See this page: Template:Age … it has a "high-risk template protection" banner at the top. See this page: Template:Age in years and days … it does not have a "high-risk template protection" banner at the top. Why is that? Is there some valid distinction between these two pages / templates, such that one carries the banner and one does not? If so, what is the distinction? If not, can an administrator either (a) remove the banner from the first template; or (b) add the banner to the second template (whichever is more appropriate)? Thanks. (Joseph A. Spadaro 20:07, 21 August 2007 (UTC))
- Both templates are protcted from editing due to high levels of vandalism on them, the reason one has a banner and one doesn't is just down to each administrators preferences, some use them, some don't. I will raise it with an admin to see if one can be added to the second template. Andyreply 20:12, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
- I'm not sure why the second template doesn't have it. I've put up a request for an administrator to add the protection template. In the future, you can do this by adding {{editprotected}} to the protected page's talk page and explaining what needs to be done. Happy editing! Hersfold (t/a/c) 20:11, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
- Most likely, the second doesn't have it because while {{age}} is on over 20,000 pages (I stopped counting), {{age in years and days}} is on less than 500 -- it's just not considered "high-use" in order to apply at Wikipedia:High-risk templates. — Lomn 20:13, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
- Oops, I see where I missed the point -- both are protected and only one has the banner. Yeah, no deep conspiracy behind that or anything. Given that the template is being tweaked after being protected, is not widely used, and has not been the target of vandalism, I'm not sure why it ought to be protected at present. — Lomn 20:18, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
Thanks to your help, this issue has been resolved. Much appreciated -- thank you. (Joseph A. Spadaro 00:27, 24 August 2007 (UTC))

Thanks for your comments at my RFA! Democracy sure is great, even when you lose. I'll try to use your comments to shape my character and become a better admin, thanks! Cheers, JetLover (talk) 02:17, 24 August 2007 (UTC)
- You're quite welcome. Sorry things didn't work out, but let me know if you decide to run again. It won't be canvassing since I'm 1) requesting it and 2) not promising to ote in any particular manner ;-). Happy editing. Hersfold (t/a/c) 03:33, 24 August 2007 (UTC)

I removed a paragraph from Anna_Politkovskaya_assassination because it was a duplicate, it might not have been trivial to seen in the diffs, but the whole paragraph was duplicated a couple of paragraphs above.
201.68.28.196 who is sometimes logged in as User:Johan Dahlin
- Ah, sorry about that. Usually when an IP removes text without an edit summary, it's a mistake or vandalism. I've gone back in and re-removed the paragraph. Thanks for letting me know. (copied to User Talk:201.68.28.196 and User Talk:Johan Dahlin) Hersfold (t/a/c) 15:55, 28 August 2007 (UTC)
Your (Hersfold) RFA
Yep, I sent you an email at 00:34 (UTC) asking you whether you were interested in having another go where I said "I would be more than happy to nominate you". Either way, good luck. :-) -- KTC 02:52, 29 August 2007 (UTC)
I'm back!
You may have noticed that I've been a bit quiet. Sorry about that. My place of employment randomly decided to change my work schedule. Everything is lumped at the end of the week now and I've been really tired.
However, after installing some fresh new-to-me Firefox addons, I'm ready to rock again. See adopt page for info. --Audacitor(tc) 04:33, 29 August 2007 (UTC)
- I had started to wonder... ok, well good to see you back. :-) Hope the work's not bringing you down too much. See you around the wiki, I'll drop in with some pointers every now and then. Happy editing! Hersfold (t/a/c) 13:12, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

- Thanks muchly!
Ready...?
Not having been to college yet, I don't know how much time it's eating off you, but I'm ready for your next lesson in the adopt area. If college is biting off too much for you I can call in a second adopter.
P.S. Hope you get admin status!

- Sorry about that... yeah, I can try to put something together tonight. Thanks for your support on the RfA, but I don't think it's going to happen. You usually needs at least 70% support to get the post, and it's not happening. I'll try again sometime later on, though. Who knows, maybe third time's a charm.
