William McGowan (1886–1918) Scottish Professional Golfer and War Hero

Early Life and Background William McGowan was born in 1886 in Prestwick, Ayrshire, Scotland, a town renowned as the birthplace of modern golf and home to the Prestwick Golf Club, where the first Open Championship was held in 1860. Growing up in this environment, McGowan developed a passion for golf and went on to pursue a career as a professional golfer.

          Golfing Career

McGowan became the professional at Radcliffe-on-Trent Golf Club in Nottinghamshire, England. His responsibilities included coaching club members, maintaining the course, and promoting the game of golf. While there is no record of significant tournament victories, McGowan’s role as a club professional attests to his skill and dedication to the sport.

At the time, professional golf was still in its early stages, and many professionals focused more on club work than competing in large tournaments. McGowan likely spent much of his career teaching and inspiring others to play the game.

World War I Service and Death

When World War I broke out, William joined The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment) 7th Bn, a historic infantry regiment of the British Army. He served as a private on the Western Front, participating in some of the war’s most intense fighting.

On 24 October 1918, McGowan was killed in action during the final stages of the war as Allied forces advanced through northern France. His death came tragically close to the armistice on 24 October 1918.

McGowan is buried at the Verchain British CemeteryCross Roads Cemetery, Fontaine-Au-Bois Nord, France. The cemetery contains the graves of soldiers who fell during the final months of the war. HarryMcG-L (talk) 06:01, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
