TV Show Episodes
[edit]I completely agree that giving individual episodes their own articles is ridiculous. Wikipedia guidelines stress that this is not supposed to be a macropedia, not supposed to be a reservoir for all trivia, and yet such junk crowds the site anyway. There are other sites for creating episode guides, for crying out loud!
Whew. Thanks for inviting us to vent on that topic. 172.169.119.119 23:18, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

Your request
[edit]Having looked at the history I don't think it was protected for that reason and so have altered the template based on your request. If I get any feedback about it however I will point them in your direction, if that's alright. -- Francs2000 00:23, 20 April 2006 (UTC)
Bulk addition of schools
[edit]Please see Wikipedia:WikiProject Schools#General tips. I am replacing the {{prod}} tags with {{cleanup-school}} tags. HokieRNB 04:36, 24 May 2007 (UTC)
- I think I agree with your sentiment, but adding the {{prod}} wasn't the right process. If you believe they should be deleted, and are prepared to do the work to show that, then add the {{afd}} instead. In the meantime, placing the {{cleanup-school}} at least alerts people who might be watching these pages or browsing to them that if they want them kept, they should do some work to demonstrate their notability. Wondermints
[edit]It usually is just "Wondermints" isn't it? Funny, I wonder why their first album was "Wonderful World of the Wondermints" and Amazon calls them "The Wondermints" there [1]. But I agree with you, thanks. Gekritzl 23:59, 29 June 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for your note. I love that Roger Joseph Manning Jr CD too, it's as close to Jellyfish as I've found (The Grays and Imperial Drag didn't quite make it for me) although I haven't checked out Jason Falkner's body of work yet (I don't know why). Oh, you have to check out John Hoskinson, do you have his CDs? I have Miscellaneous Heathen and it's great. He has another too, which only just came out. Can't believe there is not a WP article on him (check out the rave reviews on Amazon.) I strongly recommend Einstein's Sister, Cherry Twister, and Cotton Mather too. Oh, and although someone removed Eric Hutchinson from the list, if you ever get a chance to see him live, by all means do so, you won't be disappointed. Regarding the list, yes, I'm hoping to make it a place where enthusiasts of powerpop can go and check out new bands. I know there are many there I still need to check out. I don't think I can help you on the lyrics to RJM's three songs, sorry. Gekritzl 17:00, 2 July 2007 (UTC)
- P.S. Check out some samples of Sugarbomb on Amazon! See also: [2] ...Another band that I'm surprised doesn't have a WP page, considering the rave reviews. Gekritzl 17:34, 2 July 2007 (UTC)
Good call on BNL, can't believe we missed it. Gekritzl 20:30, 5 July 2007 (UTC)
And same thing with Guster! Good deal. Gekritzl 15:22, 9 July 2007 (UTC)
Hope you don't mind me discussing with you here - I'd never heard of Jack's Mannequin but on Amazon there are rave reviews, thanks! That's exactly what I'd hoped to gain from the List of power pop musicians, I'll check out the sound samples -- thanks again. Gekritzl 16:53, 9 July 2007 (UTC)
Table of contents
[edit]Good deal, I was unaware of the compactTOC2 tag/flag you added to List of power pop musicians, thanks for the cleanup. Gekritzl 01:54, 15 July 2007 (UTC)
Fred
[edit]Thanks for "fred" - great band! Gekritzl 16:56, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
Copied from my Talk page: You're welcome! Damn, they're good. On another note... I can't believe that someone just tried removing the Beatles and Head Automatica from the list without a word! Did I overcompensate when I added some of those punk pop bands? I didn't realize at first that there was another, separate "list of punk pop bands" article. On yet another note... can you think of any way to incorporate into the list's lead blurb a description of power pop as "rock/pop" or something like that? I certainly don't want to step on the main article's toes, but it would be nice if users who stumbled across the list page without an understanding of what power pop is could just see "rock/pop" and instantly think, "Oh, OK." (Atleast that's how I'd most succinctly describe it.) H3G3M0N 00:31, 17 July 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, "fred" sounds great! I ordered the CD today, can't wait to get it. And thanks for restoring the Beatles and Head Automatica to the list, as well as some others that somebody summarily deleted. (Example: I think the same person deleted "Cute Is What We Aim For" and some people on that Talk Page claim they're not powerpop -- yet their bandmembers describe the music as powerpop! I made the appropriate edits on that article.) Regarding the punk/pop, my thoughts are that there is no band that is "pure" power-pop (meaning every song is powerpop, although Jellyfish's Spilt Milk comes close), so I like to think the list is for bands that have created works that are undeniably powerpop. (At the risk of using a somewhat subjective weasel word, "undeniably".) For example, Del Amitri is largely mainstream rock, but one listen to "Not Where It's At" and you can't argue it's not a pure powerpop song. And even the most powerpoppish bands (e.g. Fountains of Wayne, Jellyfish, Big Star, Einstein's Sister, Cotton Mather, The Rembrandts) record some songs that are folk ballads, or pure rock, or punk. Pete Townsend coined the term (he said "power pop is what we play") yet I wouldn't describe The Who as a "mostly" power pop band ("The Kids Are Alright", however, is quintessential powerpop). So I'm with you on adding those "crossover" or "part-time-powerpop" bands. On another note, do you think "fred" should be listed in lower case? I know the CD cover is in lower case, but Amazon and all websites I've seen write their name as "Fred". (echolyn for example always write their name in lower case.) By the way - do you play an instrument? TTYL... Gekritzl 00:57, 17 July 2007 (UTC)
Damn you're good. :) Can't believe I missed them. I heard "The Waiting" on the same day I first heard Sixpence None the Richer, definitely powerpop -- very nice. (I'm indifferent to the fact that they are called "Christian rock," music is music.) Check out the song Unfazed. Gekritzl 01:42, 17 July 2007 (UTC)
Powerpop
[edit]Hi H3G3M0N - you said can you think of any way to incorporate into the list's lead blurb a description of power pop as "rock/pop" - I'll try to think of something - maybe just copy the essence of the definition from the main page. But I actually have a thought, from a different angle. What do you think of this: I've heard people use the term "bubblegum" in the same sentence as ]powerpop. Now, if someone said "Oh, Jellyfish, they're powerpop/bubblegum, right?" I would be terribly offended. So, I'm wondering if some people look at that list and say "OMG my favorite band, Head Automatica is listed here as powerpop/bubblegum, that's an insult! Same with the Beatles! I'm deleting them from the list!" So I can see how your idea might help.
Long ago the main article had a nice sentence toward the beginning: A listener who has heard the 1960s smash "A Hard Day's Night" by The Beatles or the 2003 hit "Stacy's Mom" by Fountains of Wayne has heard power pop. I liked that. But someone I guess didn't think it was encyclopedic and replaced with: Badfinger's "No Matter What" (1970), The Raspberries' "Go All The Way" (1972), The Knack's "My Sharona" (1979), Cheap Trick's "I Want You To Want Me" (1979), Tommy Tutone's "867-5309/Jenny (1982), Weezer's "Buddy Holly" (1994), and Fountains of Wayne's "Stacy's Mom" (2003) were among the more commercially visible singles of the power pop genre.
Either one of those sentences would work on the "List" page, I think. Your thoughts?
You said RJM really makes you want to learn them keys! DO IT MAN! You'll love it. I used to play keys, but these days I'm playing lots of electric guitar every night. (This was the inspiration for adding great detail to the Cliffs of Dover article. It was 2 sentences and 2 links when I first came upon it. :) Piano is the place to start, though. [edit]Hi H3G3M0N - User IP 209.244.188.1 is at it again, deleting powerpop bands from the list. I wonder how we get an administrator involved to resolve edit wars? Gekritzl 22:51, 19 July 2007 (UTC)
- Hi H3G3M0N - I've engaged in dialoque with 209.244.188.1 on the talk page, and it's my turn to reply. So, if you'd care some time this week to restore what he has removed, I think it would be better than if I did. He thinks the term only applies to music inpired by certain 1960s bands. This is clearly wrong, since the word was used in 1967 by Pete Townshend to describe a certain type of rock at that time. Thus its definition is clearly music like The Who, Beatles, etc. -- Townshend could not possibly have been referring to the Raspberries or Badfinger! :) -- BTW, what does "H3G3M0N" mean? --- Gekritzl 17:18, 21 July 2007 (UTC)
Powerpop list
[edit]H3G3M0N - check out my latest talk on the page Talk:List_of_power_pop_musicians and reply as you see appropriate -- thanks. Gekritzl 22:09, 22 July 2007 (UTC)
Re: WTF Is "H3G3M0N"?
[edit]Damn, I should have been able to figure it out, thanks. :) Oh, and I'm glad you liked my argument at the Talk page. -- Gekritzl 15:52, 23 July 2007 (UTC)
Category:Powerpop albums
[edit]Hey Hegemon - check out [4], Category:Powerpop albums. Nice idea. I'm sure you and I will contribute. (I think some citations would be well-advised.)
By the way, besides powerpop, what other styles do you like? (I'm into progrock just about as big as powerpop.) -- Gekritzl 01:32, 25 July 2007 (UTC)
Power pop main article
[edit]Hi Hegemon - could you leave your opinion about the latest item on the main article Talk page. (This is my proposal to change the Power pop article.) Thanks! -- Gekritzl 00:20, 26 July 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks, Hegemon. Regarding Category:Powerpop_albums - I don't understand how that article works. It's automatic somehow. Try to edit it. --Gekritzl 01:11, 26 July 2007 (UTC)
Category:Power pop groups
[edit]Hey, see Category:Power_pop_groups. That's another automatically generated page. If a band or musical artist is listed with this category at the bottom of their article, it automatically updates this category page. So, it seems that editing the band's main article is the thing we should be modifying. For example, I didn't put the tag Category:Power_pop_groups on the Eric Hutchinson article. I just added it, and now he shows up on Category:Power_pop_groups. -- Gekritzl 01:21, 26 July 2007 (UTC)
- Hegemon - see the "See also" section I added to the list. I think that will help to compromise the concerns on the talk page. What do you think? -- Gekritzl 23:31, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
Re: Power Pop Miscellany
[edit]Hey Hegemon - good to hear from you. I'll have to check out the CDs you mention.
You said "responding doesn't seem worth my time" - I know what you mean. I grow tired of seeing contributions I've made (on many other pages) that just get deleted by people who don't know what they're doing and don't follow WP policy. I had one article deleted (tagged for speedy deletion) in the middle of creating it! It's a notable progrock band from Italy. Pissed me off. I won in the end.
I do intend to fix the power pop article and make it right. It's totally wrong now, and some citations aren't even valid. I can't find a notable source for Pete Townsend having said "Power pop is what we play." Have you seen that quote in a notable source? I have the books that they reference, and it's not there.
I think my final article will be one all about the deletion police type people and cite the frustrations many people have had with them. I have lots of sources. Then I'll go away. I tire of the deletionists, who tear down WP instead of adding to the body of knowledge. And then let's see how that article gets corrupted and mutated, and my text getting deleted! I'll let you know when I post the article. I've been editing it locally on my computer, and even though it's really a waste of time (what do I possibly have to gain by writing it?) I want to do it, to feel "complete" (and to, in some small way, contribute and cause people to think about this type of thing). -- Gekritzl 01:31, 4 August 2007 (UTC)
- P.S. Don't forget to update your own page when "//user age|21// is no longer true. :) It's no longer true for me...Gekritzl 01:35, 4 August 2007 (UTC)
