footnote confusion

Greetings, it is really good to discover someone on Wikipedia who is interested in cooperatives. I'd like to have a conversation with you about that topic at some point in time.

However, my immediate concern is related to footnotes. I try to carefully footnote the articles that i create, and that i contribute to. I've long been frustrated and puzzled when someone would compress those footnotes, which certainly doesn't harm the existing article, but it virtually always in my experience makes it a significant challenge to sort through and maintain the existing footnotes during any subsequent editing.

At least the name of the author was always maintained. Now i discover that a new program is compressing footnotes, and the links are labeled as "autogenerated" instead of with the author's names. Is this progress? Where can i find an overview of the logic behind this new method? I admit that the little time that i've spent trying to comprehend the footnote compression schemes of others have ended in frustration and failure, so i'm sure there's something i'm missing. best wishes, Richard Myers (talk) 17:30, 22 November 2010 (UTC)

Hi Richard. I think what you are getting at is named references. I use the Reflinks tool from the toolserver, which sometimes labels copies of identical references as "autogenerated." I found this description, which might be explanatory at WP:REFSTART:
The first time a reference appears in the article, you can give it a simple name in the <ref> code:
<ref name="smith">DETAILS OF REF</ref>
Subsequent times that you use the same reference in the article, you can use a shortcut instead of re-typing it:
<ref name="smith" />
You can then use the shortcut as many times as you want. Don't forget the /, or it will blank the rest of the article. Some symbols don't work in the ref name, but you'll find out if you use them.
You can see multiple use of the same references in action in the article William Bowyer (artist). There are three sources, and they are each referenced three times. Each statement in the article has a footnote to show its source.

Squat symbol

Dear Gobonobo. You changed the squat symbol in several Wikipedia's (from this to this). But the picture you replace it with, is not consistent with the history of the symbol. See the International Institute of Social History on this page for oldest versions of the symbol. I reverted your edit on the Dutch Wikipedia, please revert yourself on the English Wikipedia or give a detailed explanation why it should stay. Regards Sonty567 (talk) 16:22, 25 November 2010 (UTC)

Hi Sonty567. My understanding is that the squat symbol was based on hobo symbols, and that many variations of the symbol existed early on, as evidenced by the page you linked which shows several different versions. I think both the ascending lightning bolt style and the circle-N style of symbol are in use today and are valid visual representations of the squat symbol. However, the symbol that I replaced is not a true squat symbol but a stylized and rather blocky interpretation of the older style. The portion of the symbol where the arrow juts downward should be at a much sharper angle if it is to resemble those symbols actually used at squats, such as the one on the right. Hello Gonobo. Yes as far as i can look at it, it was indeed derived from the hobo-signlanguage. The squatting scene (or 1 person connected with it) first started using the symbol in Amsterdam (the Netherlands). In the very oldest form (1979) it lookliked this, very soon after that it got a restyled arrow (1980) and with that the squat symbol was born and it spread around world. That last example resembles the circle-N style a bit, though its angles doesn't touch the sides of the circle, which hardly matters. I'm not attached to the circle-N version. I'd prefer to see an svg closer to the example you provided or like the one on the right. I think something like that would be an improvement over the other one. Nice work on Charles E. Whitmeyer

A user has admitted it was a complete hoax. [1]. In case it gets deleted (though it's just a redirect now) "Here is the back story on our good friend Charles "Croatan" Whitmeyer: I made him up. He doesn't exist. At the time, I worked at the North Carolina General Assembly and we were honoring people left and right. It was devised by a whole slew of us to create a fake character, put him on wikipedia then honor him at the General Assembly to get the whole point across. Every place referenced in the article was a town or county represented by one of the members involved. I'm just surprised it lasted this long before someone realized my good friend Croatan doesn't exist. Template oddity

Hello Gobonobo. I saw that you added the template to The Man Who Planted Trees article to try and make its title show up in italics. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work when there is a space between the words italic and title. I have no idea why that is but I replaced your edit with this one {{italictitle}} and the article title is now in italics. Hope that this helps in your future editing. Well that is just weird. I know so little about how these templates work and reading through the talk page for this one hasn't made things any better. The only thing that other editors have mentioned to me is that we have to use {{italictitle}} on pages that don't have a book, film, etc infobox. Maybe there is a glitch between the two - though that is unlikely. On another note I don't know if you have ever seen the animated adaptation of this book which was made in the 80's (I was lucky enough to see it in a movie theater the 1st time) but it is a true work of art.
