Welcome!
[edit]Welcome!
Hello, Go2skewl, and welcome to Wikipedia! I have noticed that you are fairly new! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. I also see that some of your recent edits show an interest in the use of images and/or photos on Wikipedia.
Did you know that ...
- ...Wikipedia has a very stringent image use policy?
- ...most images from Flickr, online news websites, and other web sources are copyrighted?
- ...Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously?
- ...freely-licensed images should be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, a central location for images where they can be used on all Wikipedia projects?
- ...we recommend that new users use our "files for upload" process – at least until you get the hang of things?
If you are stuck, and looking for help, please come to the New contributors' help page, where experienced Wikipedians can answer any queries you have! Or, you can just type {{Help me}}
on your talk page, and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions. Here are a few other good links for newcomers:

Non-free rationale for File:Yvonne 'Vee' Parker.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Yvonne 'Vee' Parker.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F6 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:14, 31 October 2024 (UTC)
Orphaned non-free image File:Yvonne 'Vee' Parker.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:Yvonne 'Vee' Parker.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in section F5 of the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:14, 31 October 2024 (UTC)
- Okay, you can delete this one since there's already an image for that article. Go2skewl (talk) 10:12, 1 November 2024 (UTC)
File:Vee Parker.jpg
[edit]You might want to take a look at c:Commons:Screenshots for reference because there's really a good chance File:Vee Parker.jpg is a copyrighted screenshot from Orange Is the New Black that hasn't been released by the creators of that show under a {{cc-by-sa-4.0}}
license. Even if you found it licensed as such on some Fandom site, such a license would almost certainly be invalid unless the file was uploaded by the company producing the show and this could be clearly verified. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:49, 31 October 2024 (UTC)
- How can I tell if a file on that site, or even in general, is cc-by-sa? Go2skewl (talk) 10:12, 1 November 2024 (UTC)
- In needs to clearly say so somewhere on the site. Sometimes this is in the file's description/caption and sometimes it's on the website's "Copyright information" page or "About us" page. If you can find anything anywhere on the site that says anything about the copyright licensing of the images it's hosting, you should assume it's not licensed in a way that is OK for Wikipedia. The site where you got this image does have such a page here, but it basically is relying on those uploading photos to know what they're doing, and it doesn't seem to be checking any of the images uploaded. Take a look at this Harry Potter image from a different Fandom site. When you move your cursor to the upper right of the image, it says "More info", and that shows more information about the image. This photo and this photo also have licensing information but not all of them do. Licensing information should be provided for all images but lots of the people uploading images aren't doing so, and it doesn't seem that those moderating the site are making sure that they do. -- Marchjuly (talk) 12:28, 1 November 2024 (UTC)
- I asked a Wikipedia administrator who does a lot of work in the file namespace about this, and they concur with my assessment of the file's licensing. The license you used is incorrect and Wikipedia can't keep the file under that license; it might, however, be possible to keep the file under a
{{Non-free television screenshot}}
license. Wikipedia's non-free content use policy does allow copyrighted screenshots to be uploaded and used (without copyright holder consent) for primary identification purposes in the main infoboxes or at the tops of stand-alone articles about fictional characters from TV shows; so, the non-free use for this file can most likely be justified in the main infobox of Yvonne Parker. What's going to be needed is someway of verifying which episode this screenshot comes from that's considered to be a more reliable source than Fandom. Does the show have an official website which provides a synopsis of its episodes? Do you know whether this screenshot was used in any newspaper, magazine, trade publications write ups about the show, this particular episode, this particular character or the actress who plays Parker? If the episode this screenshot comes from can be verified to a reasonable degree of certainty, then a{{Non-free use rationale}}
could be added to the file's page for its use in the character article. If you're not able to find such a source yourself, perhaps someone at Wikipedia:WikiProject Television or Wikipedia:WikiProject Fictional characters might be able to help. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:34, 6 November 2024 (UTC)
