Question from Luthien808 on Jill Gibson (06:00, 16 January 2024)

I'm trying to upload the image of the artist but can't find the contribute icon, please help --Luthien808 (talk) 06:00, 16 January 2024 (UTC)

@Luthien808: it's a bit complicated, but here goes:
Please keep in mind that pictures must be available under a free content licence of some kind (see <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_content>). Free content licences are vastly preferred; non-free pictures without clear reasons for an exception and pictures without source information or clear licence status will be deleted. Please see our image use policy (<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Image_use_policy>) for further details. If the image is protected by copyright, please do not upload it — it will just be deleted within a day or two.
If you know that the image already exists under a suitable free licence or if you made the image yourself, then you should upload the file to Wikimedia Commons (a free user account will be necessary for this) by visiting this page: <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page> and clicking on "Upload file" from the left-hand margin. Your "Source" here will be the place (e.g., the http:// website, the book title & page, etc.) where the image exists and is shown to be freely licensed. If the file is entirely your own work and does not contain other copyrighted works within it, you should type Template:Own for the "Source". If the image is not yet under a free licence, but the copyright holder would like to place it under one, he/she may want to use our Interactive Release Generator available here: <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wikimedia_VRT_release_generator>.
Once the image has been uploaded, you can add it to a page thus:
1. Visit the page where you wish to place the image and click on the "Edit" tab at the top of it. This will open an editing window. Find the place in the article where you wish to place the image and write the following:
[[File:(Filename you chose when uploading).(extension of file, case-sensitive, like .jpg or .png)|thumb|Caption text(Write a caption for the image)]]
2. Save the page with an edit summary that describes what you did (e.g. "added image")
For example, if I had uploaded an image of some fruit bats in a colony that I called "fruitbatsoverhead.jpg" and wanted to add it to the article on fruit bats, I would go to that page, click "Edit", scroll down to where I wanted my image to appear, and write
[[File:fruitbatsoverhead.jpg|thumb|Fruit bat colony seen from an overhead perspective]]
and then click "Save" after making an edit summary entry like "Added image". Once you click "Save", the image should immediately appear in the article!
If you would like more information about editing you might want to consider visiting this page: <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Editing>. We also have a tutorial on using images here <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Picture_tutorial> which will show you how to adjust the size of the image as it appears in the Wikipedia article, explains the use of the word "thumb", and explains other aspects of how the image will be seen by other readers.
If you need more help, feel free to reply to this message and I will see if I can assist you further. Good luck! Geoff | Who, me? 13:13, 16 January 2024 (UTC)

Question from MRXM1000 on Wikipedia talk:Paid editing (proposal) (14:41, 16 January 2024)

Is my ip still visible if a log in or make a account and then publish a wiki --MRXM1000 (talk) 14:41, 16 January 2024 (UTC)

No. IP addresses of logged in editors are not visible in the edit History of any article. Geoff | Who, me? 15:14, 16 January 2024 (UTC)
By the way, you posted what appears to be an unrelated topic on the Talk page you noted above, Wikipedia_talk:Paid_editing_(proposal)#HACKING_types. I moved it to the bottom of the page and put it into a separate section, as should have been done. Nonetheless, I am not sure why the long comment was posted there, as it does not appear to relate to the policy on paid editing. Were you trying to draft a new article? If so, you should start at Wikipedia:Articles_for_creation to create your draft article. Geoff | Who, me? 17:27, 16 January 2024 (UTC)

Hi

Why are you harassing and vandalizing Mr. Keene's Wikipedia page? Every single thing originally on his page is verified and true. You are harassing this man unjustly. Why? This illegal and will not be tolerated. Name one thing that is on his Wikipedia page that is not true? You can't because its all fact verified. If anything you should be helping improve his page not vandalizing and harassing it. Let's talk about how to improve his page. Black Bird is his real life story and he is the intellectual property rights owner, this is widely known. All his books are best sellers. I have seen people that were just an assistant grip on movie sets that have a better looking and not harassed Wikipedia page than his. So what can we do to make his page better, not vandalizing it. Add his images at the World Prieme tell his true history, not one that you clearly do not know or understand. So what can we do to make it better? Joseph M31 (talk) 00:27, 18 January 2024 (UTC)

@Joseph M31: Do you have a personal or professional relationship with the article subject? Your edit history is that your edit have been largely confined to one article, the one about which you write. As another editor noted on your Talk page last June, if you have a conflict of interest, you need to declare it. And that is particularly true if you are being compensated in any way for editing the article, per the Terms of Use. Finally, discussions about proposed improvements to and your concerns about the article should be carried out on its Talk page. Attacking other editors is not the best way to go about improving the article. Geoff | Who, me? 13:46, 18 January 2024 (UTC)

Cum creez o pagină nouă? --Mr.elian22 (talk) 13:34, 22 January 2024 (UTC)

Greetings! Nice to meet you.

Geoff, thank you for being my mentor. I need one. I am a novice Wikipedia editor.

Question: Can you teach me how to update the photo on this page? Senator Celsi has a more recent photo that I would like to post on this page, but Wikipedia won't allow it. Can you give me any advice?

Thank you, Brandie Brandieport (talk) 11:35, 22 January 2024 (UTC)

@Brandieport: About this article. May I ask if you are acting on behalf of the senator, either as a friend or as an agent/employee? The current image is the official state portrait and is hosted here on Commons. If you have another free image you wish to upload to Commons and then add to the article to replace the current image, let me know. The instructions are a bit involved. @Mr.elian22: Google translates this from the Romanian as: "If Wikipedia is also a limited cv only for some, then the main goal has changed to something free and equal at the moment I don't want to be part of this pitiful, manipulative monarchy with limited deceivers." Then why are you here, posting on my Talk page? Geoff | Who, me? 21:44, 23 January 2024 (UTC)

Question from Oxfreudian (21:52, 25 January 2024)

Thanks for volunteering your time, Geoff. I haven't tried to edit in some 20 years. Starting in 2002, I began doing research on a controversial topic (who really wrote Shakespeare?). I had my edits removed again and again by a band of traditionalists who control everything on Wiki about Shakespeare. They began by complaining that I wasn't citing a published article on the topic. So I began publishing articles and citing them. Next, they said no one had cited my articles in other articles, so they didn't count. They then banned me from editing anything on Shakespeare. I gave up. Will the same thing likely happen to me now if I make another attempt to add balance to the Wiki material on Shakespeare? (I've now written more than 100 publications on the topic). Thanks! --Oxfreudian (talk) 21:52, 25 January 2024 (UTC)

@Oxfreudian: I see no edits to any article on Shakespeare by your account, which has only recently been created. Which article and which diffs? Were you using another account or an IP address to edit before? If so, what username/IP? When you say "banned," do you mean a site ban or a block? This might not be the place for you to bring this up. Geoff | Who, me? 21:58, 25 January 2024 (UTC)
No, probably not. It's been so long, I don't remember the answers to your questions.
But I see "KnitWitted" has posted five articles by me removed by Tom Reedy, one of the traditionalists--
Talk:Biblical allusions in Shakespeare Oxfreudian (talk) 22:10, 25 January 2024 (UTC)
@Oxfreudian: There was (and is) an ArbCom decision in this area: <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Shakespeare_authorship_question>. I assume you were one of the editors involved, yes? Knitwiited was notified of sanctions imposed: <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Knitwitted#Third_and_last_warning>. As far as citing your own work, see Wikipedia:Reliable_sources#Self-published_sources_(online_and_paper) and Wikipedia:Verifiability#Self-published_sources. I think I'm probably not the person to ask about this - perhaps you should ask at ArbCom. Geoff | Who, me? 22:31, 25 January 2024 (UTC)
Thanks for taking the time to look into this, Geoff.
I gather not much has changed, so I will return to writing for mainstream publications, and not get into the mud of the Shakespeare wars on Wiki. Oxfreudian (talk) 22:34, 25 January 2024 (UTC)

Question from Elail on Cage the Elephant discography (01:41, 4 February 2024)

Hello, the text keeps showing up bolded when I don't want it to be. How do I change that? --Elail (talk) 01:41, 4 February 2024 (UTC)

@Elail: You are editing with the mobile app, yes? In the edit view, you can see a B and an I below the area where your text appears. To bold (or unbold) text, press the B. You could also manually remove the three '''ticks that appear on each side of bolded text'''. Geoff | Who, me? 13:34, 4 February 2024 (UTC)

Question from Daliaxer (14:38, 4 February 2024)

Hey Glane, hope you are doing well. I was editing a page that had no logo, and I found its logo on Google available publicly. But somehow I am not able to upload it; neither for that page nor for any other page. Could you please guide? --Daliaxer (talk) 14:38, 4 February 2024 (UTC)

@Daliaxer: Which article and which logo image are you writing about? Generally speaking, images found on the web are copyrighted and may not be used on Wikipedia without permission from the copyright owner. Geoff | Who, me? 15:00, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
There's a page Pediatric Trials Netwrok which appeared in my suggestion box. I found their logo on their Facebook. Are we not allowed to upload respective logos on their pages? I thought that was also a contribution. Daliaxer (talk) 15:07, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
@Daliaxer: As I mentioned, images found on the web are almost always someone's property. And no, you can't use someone's property in a Wikipedia article without their permission. To help understand this, read the Image Use policy and the specific policy about using logos. Copyright law is extremely complex, and even experts have difficulty grasping all its nuances. Geoff | Who, me? 15:45, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
Noted. Thank you. Daliaxer (talk) 16:59, 4 February 2024 (UTC)

Richard Lovelace

Hey, I'm new to this so I might've made the mistake of inserting text instead of a link in the Richard Lovelace article, but I would genuinely love to have a citation for the claim about the pronunciation of his last name, if that's possible. Sorry to bother you! Joysloc (talk) 23:29, 8 February 2024 (UTC)

@Joysloc: A better way would be to simply remove the pronunciation entirely, with an edit summary something like "removed unreferenced pronunciation". Then be ready to defend any objection on the article Talk page per the bold, revert, discuss cycle. Keep calm and carry on! Geoff | Who, me? 23:35, 8 February 2024 (UTC)

Question from Daliaxer (09:12, 10 February 2024)

Hey again, Can you tell me how can I achieve these badges and awards on Wikipedia as a contributor? --Daliaxer (talk) 09:12, 10 February 2024 (UTC)

⚠

Thanks for uploading File:Maryland cookies.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in section F5 of the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 18:34, 12 February 2024 (UTC)

Please, do not delete. At least help me to change the name so that it doesn't appear as a username. I am trying to add photos as well. I thought I was placing the links correctly. MissLindaC (talk) 21:39, 15 February 2024 (UTC)

why was my page deleted? I needed help MissLindaC (talk) 21:44, 15 February 2024 (UTC)

@MissLindaC: As noted in the speedy deletion notice at the top of your userspace draft, "This user page may meet Wikipedia's criteria for speedy deletion as a userpage being used only for promotion or publicity, with a username that promotes or implies affiliation with the entity being promoted. The use of one's userpage for advertising or publicity is considered spam and is not a legitimate use of one's userspace. " Wikipedia is not a means of promotion. Further, writing about yourself is highly discouraged. Geoff | Who, me? 21:50, 15 February 2024 (UTC)

Question from Hey123567 on Wikipedia:Writing better articles (06:11, 22 February 2024)

hey can you help me start an article? --Hey123567 (talk) 06:11, 22 February 2024 (UTC)

@Hey123567: I would like to direct you to our "Article Wizard" at WP:WIZARD, which will help you decide whether the topic you want to write about is suitable for a Wikipedia article. At the end of the wizard, if your subject is suitable for Wikipedia, you will be given the option to create a draft and submit it for review by other editors as a part of the "Articles for Creation" project (WP:AFC). The members of this project are experienced editors, though there is much greater demand for their services than there is supply, so you may need to wait a while before your draft is reviewed.
Once you submit your draft, it will be placed into a category where it will be open for review by anyone who reviews submissions. If your submission is approved (which may take more than 3 months because of the current backlog) then an editor will accept it, and you will be notified of the article's creation. If your submission is not accepted, a note will be left on the page describing what can be improved, and you will be notified of this via a message on your "Talk" page.
Note that if you are interested in the publication of an article to which you are very close (e.g., an article about a member of your family, your business, your club/organization/ school, or yourself) you probably have a conflict of interest: if so, it will be absolutely critical that you disclose this when you create the article. Please see Wikipedia:Conflict_of_interest for information about doing so properly. If you do not do this, your user account may become permanently blocked and the article may be deleted. Question from EditorNex on Marcus Foundation (02:53, 6 March 2024)

Hello, please tell how can I improve this article --EditorNex (talk) 02:53, 6 March 2024 (UTC)

@EditorNex:. Well, it is a one sentence article, so there is nowhere to go but toward improvement. Look at the maintenance tags, for a start, which note no wikilinks and no reliable sources, only a primary reference. This is a good resource for learning about using third-party publications as references. What has been published which could be used to support more information in the article about the article subject? What more would a reader of an encyclopedia want to know about the Foundation? Question from A guy from murica97390 (23:16, 6 March 2024)

Hello Glane23, is it better to edit simple english wikipedia articles first and then go to the normal english or the other way? --A guy from murica97390 (talk) 23:16, 6 March 2024 (UTC)

@A guy from murica97390: It looks like you've been editing the English Wikipedia exclusively since you started about 5 months ago. I am not sure if there is any advantage either way, but my own experience is that it is much harder to write simply and understandably at the basic level needed for the Simple Wikipedia than it is to write standard English. There's no restriction in your choice, but if I was you, I'd first read a lot of the Simple English articles so you get the necessary style and, of course, thoroughly digest all the Help articles: <https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Contents>. Hello, how to eliminate spaces automatically done by Word in paragraphs --Ectttor13 (talk) 15:53, 16 March 2024 (UTC)

@Ectttor13: You're writing about a Word issue, rather than a Wikipedia editor issue. You might try the Help function in Word. A search for the issue in Word>Help using this search "eliminate spaces after paragraphs" gives you this:
Adjust indents and spacing - Microsoft Support
Adjusts the amount of space before a paragraph. After. Adjusts the amount of space after a paragraph. Line spacing. Select Single to single-space text. Select 1.5 lines to space text one-and-one-half times that of single spacing. Select Double to double-space text.
Remove or clear a hanging indent - Microsoft Support
Select the text where you want to remove a hanging indent. Go to Home > Paragraph dialog launcher > Indents and Spacing. Under Special, select None. Select OK.
Change the default line spacing in Word - Microsoft Support
Go to Home > Line and Paragraph Spacing. Select Line Spacing Options , and then choose the options you want under Spacing . To change the spacing before or after the selected paragraphs, select the arrow next to Before or After and enter the amount of space that you want.

Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.

Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.

It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!

2023 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.

Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.

Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.

Question from JaneOliviaAus (13:40, 4 April 2024)

Hi Glane. Thanks for getting in touch. I'm keen to write a biographical page for a musician friend of note. Do I need to practice editing first? (I'm a journalist). Jane --JaneOliviaAus (talk) 13:40, 4 April 2024 (UTC)

@JaneOliviaAus: Hello, if I were you, I would look at some of the available help articles, such as Your first article. Editing here is very different from editing as a professional journalist, as there is no central editorial board overseeing content and almost everyone is a rank amateur, driven only by their love for the encyclopedia. Those same amateurs may review and change your article once it is published. I think Wikipedia editors need the hide of a rhinoceros and the heart of a dove in order to thrive. Start your article at the Article Wizard, which will guide you through the steps of creating and then submitting a draft for review by the new article reviewers (all of whom are volunteers, as with everyone else, including yourself). Geoff | Who, me? 14:20, 4 April 2024 (UTC)
appreciate this, thanks! JaneOliviaAus (talk) 14:31, 4 April 2024 (UTC)

recent edit in Lynn Donoghue

Hi, I removed some incorrect information that you put back in from my mothers article (Lynn Donoghue) because it was incorrect in both cause of death and my name 174.88.93.55 (talk) 09:04, 6 April 2024 (UTC)

@174.88.93.55: You removed a part of the article which was referenced by two reliable sources instead of providing such references to correct the statements in the article. As it turns out, another volunteer has restored your deletion. Discuss any further changes to that part of the article on its Talk page to try to gain some consensus as to the article's content. Provide sources for any correction(s) you propose per this essay. Geoff | Who, me? 11:55, 6 April 2024 (UTC)

Question from Speelman Sinawo (15:18, 7 April 2024)

Hello , is it easy to create a page or to edit? --Speelman Sinawo (talk) 15:18, 7 April 2024 (UTC)

@Speelman Sinawo: Well, yes. But there is a learning curve to getting things done correctly around here. Wikipedia is a "wiki", which means that everyone is welcome to contribute to our content, including you. We have no central editorial board; all our articles are written and edited by volunteer members of the Wikipedia community. At the top of each page is an "edit" tab. Try it, for example, at Wikipedia:Sandbox, a practice area where you can make changes.
If you'd like more information about contributing to Wikipedia, you should read the introduction: Wikipedia:Introduction. There is also an editing tutorial that every new editor should read: Wikipedia:Tutorial. Another useful guide is this one, which will help you understand what can and cannot be posted on your own user account page, User:Speelman Sinawo. Welcome! Question from VelvetFalsebark (16:04, 3 May 2024)

how would i get a translated page i made published properly? i just made an entire new page for the translated version and i dont have permission to publish it other than to my own user page --Fløyel VelvetFalsebark 16:04, 3 May 2024 (UTC)

@VelvetFalsebark: Do you mean this draft: User:VelvetFalsebark/Towns_in_Rogaland? You can submit the draft for a review by adding the code at the top mentioned in the "Submitting for review" section of this article: Wikipedia:Articles_for_creation. Geoff | Who, me? 16:36, 3 May 2024 (UTC)

Only warnings

Why did you leave an only warning for this edit? I'm not seeing anything in that edit that would warrant an only warning. Not to mention, the edit you reverted isn't obvious vandalism and should not have been reverted with rollback. (Edit: my bad, looks like you didn't warn the user, but I do want to know about the unexplained reversion of that edit) —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 12:36, 9 May 2024 (UTC)

@K6ka: I reverted because, when I read the reference for the term "microblogging," which the IP editor edited out in favour of "blogging," I found that the reference clearly stated that the site was a "microblog." As you say, I didn't warn the IP. And, since it all happened, the article has been reverted by the IP to the "blogging" term. Note their comment following my edit and the warning by another user. I'm leaving it alone. Geoff | Who, me? 13:30, 9 May 2024 (UTC)

Question from Rusbro335 (13:58, 21 May 2024)

Hey Begooc & Glane23,

I was just exploring, Wikipedia for the first time. I was looking for a company, on Wikipedia but couldn't find them. Will it be possible for you to create a page for them? --Rusbro335 (talk) 13:58, 21 May 2024 (UTC)

@Rusbro335: Wikipedia's articles are written by its readers as volunteers. The subjects for our articles are usually chosen by the editing community rather than by request. If however the entry qualifies under our encyclopedic notability guidelines found at Wikipedia:N, and you can cite reliable, published, 3rd party sources per Wikipedia:RS, you can suggest the creation of it to the other volunteers at Wikipedia:RA.
If you have already prepared material for the entry, you can create it yourself. Simply type in the title of the entry into the search bar. If no articles with such a title exist, you will be given the option of creating it or requesting it at the page mentioned above. Follow the appropriate link, and you will be greeted with a form allowing you to create the entry.
Before editing, be mindful that Wikipedia discourages articles written by the subjects themselves or by others close to a subject because of the difficulty in writing objectively about yourself, your family, or your work. See the conflict of interest rules at Wikipedia:COI.
To help you get started, you can review the welcome page at Wikipedia:WEL. And this article about writing your first article is also very helpful: Help:Your first article. Geoff | Who, me? 15:03, 21 May 2024 (UTC)

Question from Hthompson2000 on Conservative Party of British Columbia (03:19, 1 June 2024)

hey, i was wondering if you could help improve my citation and paragraph regarding Lorne Doerkson leaving BC united for the BC conservatives --Hthompson2000 (talk) 03:19, 1 June 2024 (UTC)

@Hthompson2000: You're writing about this edit, which was the addition of: "On May 31, BC United MLA and BC United caucus chair Lorne Doerkson crossed the floor to the conservatives, giving the party 3 MLAs[citation]". You added that sentence to the article after you posted here, so I am unsure what you are asking. Geoff | Who, me? 12:28, 1 June 2024 (UTC)
i was just looking for feedback on ways to make the citation look better, and also improve my addition Hthompson2000 (talk) 13:56, 1 June 2024 (UTC)
@Hthompson2000: Nothing stands out as an issue with your addition. You could learn more about referencing, including formatting, by starting here: Help:Referencing for beginners and then go on to reading the advances articles on citations. Feedback around here is somewhat imprecise as others review edits you've made to various articles as, if, and when they become interested. Question from MTB50 (10:23, 22 June 2024)

Hello Geoff,

I hope this message finds you well. My name is Mahdi, and as a newcomer to Wikipedia, I highly appreciate your support and guidance in advance.

I've just published a draft article about the late Dr. Ghada Hijjawi Qaddumi and have submitted it for review (bless chatgpt for making the process easier than I thought it would be). Would greatly value your feedback on the draft and if you have the authority to approve it, that would be great too.

You can view the draft here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Dr._Ghada_Hijjawi_Qaddumi

Thanks a bunch for your time and support.

Kind regards, Mahdi B. --MTB50 (talk) 10:23, 22 June 2024 (UTC)

@MTB50: The draft was deleted earlier today as it was determined to be: "Unambiguous advertising or promotion: see WP:COI, WP:RS, WP:Notability (people), name is wrong in title." In any case, drafts are reviewed by a separate team of volunteers, not me. I recommend reading the policies linked in the deletion summary: WP:COI, WP:RS and WP:Notability (people), as well as Wikipedia:What_Wikipedia_is_not#Wikipedia_is_not_a_soapbox_or_means_of_promotion. @Chanan12: The reasons your drafts were deleted are well documented on your user account Talk page, which I encourage you to read carefully and completely. @BigDann: I don't have the resources or time to research questions not directly connected to the creation or improvement of the articles here. However, there is a page on the English Wikipedia where various volunteers try to answer questions such as yours, called the Reference Desk: Wikipedia:Reference desk. Although there is no guarantee that they can provide an answer, they are often able to. Please be specific in your question so that others can better assist you.
Anything you post to the Reference Desk will become public. I don't recommend that you post personal information such as email addresses or phone numbers. Question from Miaurol43 (08:26, 8 August 2024)

Hi, I have a problem with a editor that can promote the dissapear of indigenous cultures(Berbers) that protects the UN and Minority rights. He's called Skitash, he's removing all my edits and I put clearly the sources that I'm using, what can I do? --Miaurol43 (talk) 08:26, 8 August 2024 (UTC)

The articles are Benimellal and Tadla-Azilal region, he removed neotifinagh from all the articles, knowing that in Morocco the Tamazight is an official language and neo tifinagh is protected by the country's constitution (article 5). He's making that Wikipedia stop being neutral as always was.
Thanks for your attention, I wait your answer Miaurol43 (talk) 08:33, 8 August 2024 (UTC)
@Miaurol43: You write about a content dispute. Article content is not controlled by a central authority, but I can outline how such disputes are handled on Wikipedia. First, looking the the edit summaries in the History of each article, the other editor has cited two policies, which I recommend that you read to start: No original research and Manual of Style - Lead Languages. Next, start by initiating a discussion about the changes on the article's Talk page, which you have done on the Beni Mellal article, but not on the Tadla-Azila article. You should check back occasionally to see if anyone has responded. This may be the simplest way to handle your issue. Second, if you think your concern is not one of misunderstanding but of an editing dispute, you may end up needing to seek formal dispute resolution. This allows other editors to take a fresh look at what is going on and to consider the dispute from a neutral standpoint. You can access more information about Wikipedia's dispute resolution process here: Wikipedia:Dispute resolution. Most dispute resolution requires you to have already engaged in discussion on the article talk page first, so you will probably NOT want to start here, but you may decide to go here if the talk page turn out to be unproductive for you. Last, you also have the option to change the content of the article as you see fit (unless you have been blocked for some reason). However, I must warn you that repeatedly reverting the edits of others or adding/removing significant content without discussion may constitute disruptive editing and may cause your account to become blocked. Please do not consider this your first option— begin with the talk page. Geoff | Who, me? 12:26, 8 August 2024 (UTC)
But how can I win a discussion, he didn't answer any of my opened topics, I feel disgusted with the article, I'm from there and I feel offended that my native and official language isn't there, literally you can see my discussion with him but I don't receive any answer from him.
Thanks for answering my doubt, and give your time Miaurol43 (talk) 17:29, 8 August 2024 (UTC)
I wrote about it in Tadla Azilal article(with updated sources,I can provide more if it's needed), how much time I need to wait for getting a answer from my dispute? Because I don't think that's a interesting topic between wikipedia editors, can I ask if it's read automatically by wikipedia editors ? Miaurol43 (talk) 17:38, 8 August 2024 (UTC)
@Miaurol43: There is no "winning." The purpose here is to improve the encyclopedia. Did you read the article the other editor suggested about not using your own knowledge or research as references in Wikipedia articles? Also, it has been all of 18 hours since you posted to the Beni Mellal Talk page. You're going to have to be patient with your fellow volunteers. Perhaps you need to learn how to notify other users when you have a comment, as I am doing here with my comments in response to yours, using the reply to Template. Read about it. Geoff | Who, me? 17:49, 8 August 2024 (UTC)
But I used reliable sources, not mines but from official and public organizations(as it is IRCAM: institute royal de la culture Amazigh du Maroc), or the official constitution of 2011 as a sources the Spanish public university of Santiago de Compostela (USC) or Constitute( a recompilation of world constitution updated), also it's a minor change (native name). I'm not thinking in winning but make Wikipedia a good source for all people don't find it offensive and free edit using reliable and updated sources for make that digital encyclopedia better. Also I included another public source (Official census that is easy to search, RGPH 2014 from HCP for prove that the region have an important presence of Tamazight speakers). How can I be warned using official data without any discussion or any good explanation from a admin as Skitash is? Miaurol43 (talk) 18:12, 8 August 2024 (UTC)

@Miaurol43:All edits by all volunteers are subject to review and reversion by all other volunteers. There was an explanation for Skitash's revert in the page edit History, as I've mentioned, citing two Wikipedia policies. You need to discuss this with Skitash and with any of the rest of the community which happens to be interested. This is what the Talk page discussion is for, and you've not given it time to occur. It is quite possible that Skitash is not aware of your one Talk page post for Beni Mellal, and there is the fact that you haven't tried to discuss your proposed changes to the Tadla-Azila article. And by the way, Skitash is not an administrator, simply a volunteer just as you are (and as I am), except that Skitash has 20 months' experience and has made over 7,800 edits during that time, while you've been editing for just under 12 months with 20 edits. Take this as an opportunity to learn. Geoff | Who, me? 20:38, 8 August 2024 (UTC)

Reverting cos new account or cos think not undisputed uncontroversial?

Uncontroversial/undisputed facts can be unsourced of course and are in that article. Whenevery (talk) 22:55, 9 August 2024 (UTC)

@Whenevery: About this edit to Brendan Dassey. No, facts in articles must be verifiable, by citing references to reliable sources, so that the reader may check the statements of facts in the articles. Geoff | Who, me? 23:00, 9 August 2024 (UTC)
I think that answers that it's cos new account/info and I'll need to source it. For the record that answer misrepresents the linked verifiability guideline "Whether and how quickly material should be initially removed for not having an inline citation to a reliable source depends on the material and the overall state of the article" as I said. Whenevery (talk) 23:11, 9 August 2024 (UTC)
The article is about a living person and WP:BLP applies. For the record, the nutshell summary of the latter policy is: "Material about living persons added to any Wikipedia page must be written with the greatest care and attention to verifiability, neutrality, and avoidance of original research." Question from Realdbmafrica (01:55, 25 August 2024)

How can I create a profile on Wikipedia --Realdbmafrica (talk) 01:55, 25 August 2024 (UTC)

@Realdbmafrica: By "create a profile," I assume you mean you wish to write an article about yourself. As you may already know, Wikipedia is a collaborative encyclopedia written by its readers. The subjects for our articles are generally chosen by the editing community rather than by request. While there is a venue where you can request articles, a request for an article creation on oneself is likely to be declined. You can visit our 'requests for articles' page at Wikipedia:Requested articles.
It's also important to realise that Wikipedia strongly discourages articles written by the subjects themselves or by others close to a subject because of the difficulty in writing objectively about yourself, your family, or your work. Please see Wikipedia:Autobiography for our guidelines on writing about yourself or topics you are personally involved with. While keeping in mind conflict of interest issues, please note that if someone does create an article about you, you should feel more than welcome to edit the article's Talk page to ensure that each piece of information is factual and complying with our "Biography of Living Persons" policy. This policy can be viewed at Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons.
You may also like to read Wikipedia:Notability (people) for a guideline on the type of articles that are generally accepted. Geoff | Who, me? 11:52, 25 August 2024 (UTC)

You Protected The Kingkoil Page from editing

The Content Updated on Kingkoil Page is not correct we applied for Kingkoil India page but you mentioned Kingkoil Only and when we submitted the edits you change it to protected plz revert it as we need to update the proper content Director manik singh (talk) 17:02, 28 August 2024 (UTC)

@Director manik singh: I believe you must be writing about King Koil. Refer to its edit History: [2]. I didn't protect the article. As edits have been made recently to the article by users with a conflict of interest, it has been protected so that only autoconfirmed/confirmed editors are able to edit the article. I assume you also have a conflict of interest, as you appear to be trying to assert ownership over the page on behalf of its subject or a related company. You should discuss your proposed changes on the article's Talk page to see if you can establish a consensus amongst the community of Wikipedia editors for its content. Geoff | Who, me? 17:29, 28 August 2024 (UTC)
I am not trying to assert the ownership of the page , I am sharing the actual details of the company as also the company is purchased by AI Dream

I already Created Submitted the content in Talk Page You can check Director manik singh (talk) 17:57, 28 August 2024 (UTC)
@Director manik singh: I requested a revert of your page move. See the comment I left on your Talk page. Such a move and the revisions you made to this article should be discussed and a consensus reached. The India operation is discussed in the body of the article, but the company was founded in the United States and its original name should be reflected in the article about the original company in its title as the article reflects its history regardless of its acquisition and current ownership. You may wish to draft a brand-new article about "KingKoil.in" instead of hijacking the existing article, or add more information to the existing article to reflect the acquisition. Please read the article on ownership of the content of the articles. Geoff | Who, me? 19:15, 28 August 2024 (UTC)

Question from Cyanochic on Epithemia (15:32, 16 September 2024)

Hi, I'm doing more in depth edits of the page Epithemia (algal taxon that I have a lot of knowledge in) and there's taxonomic dispute of what belongs in Epithemia. Some scientists have adopted new taxonomy and others haven't. Is there an established way to work on listing species, but noting which ones are disputed as part of the genus (e.g. Epithemia gibberula, prev. Rhopalodia gibberula) or something? Thanks! --Cyanochic (talk) 15:32, 16 September 2024 (UTC)

@Cyanochic: Welcome to Wikipedia! Well, you could note the taxonomic dispute in each article where it applies, citing the conflicting journals, or start a discussion on the Epithemia talk page, but my guess is that you'll get more traction on the general question by discussing the relative positions reflected by current journals on the Project Algae Talk page. I see you are a member of the project. I know of no other established ways to work on listing species' taxonomies than either article-by-article or through the project. Cheers! Hello, my message find you well, I have a question. It is that I want to open a crowd website Can you help me regarding that --Ainullahwahaj (talk) 15:30, 1 October 2024 (UTC)

@Ainullahwahaj: The only thing I know about the defunct website Rabb.it is in the Wikipedia article you mentioned. I assume you know that Wikipedia itself is not the place to open a crowd website, so you will have to search out web hosts on your own. Did you have a question about how Wikipedia works? Geoff | Who, me? 15:40, 1 October 2024 (UTC)

Response

Hi Glane23,

I want to clarify my statement. I will get paid by Georgia Tech whether I write this article or not. I'm not paid directly for writing this article. In my position, I feel it is appropriate to write it and I have the knowledge to share this information. I gain nothing monetarily from writing this article. I work for a public institution. I am paid by Georgia Tech, but not to write this article. If this still makes me a paid contributor, let me know.

Best regards, Monique Waddell (talk) 13:04, 2 October 2024 (UTC)

@Monique Waddell: Yes, as I've posted on the draft article Talk page, editing on behalf of your employer is paid editing which must be disclosed, whether you are specifically paid to edit the article or not. The subject of the article is an employee of Georgia Tech, so that you have a clear conflict of interest when writing about a fellow employee and, since you are paid by the organization, you are acting within the scope of your employment when editing the article about Mr. Walker per Wikipedia's Terms of Use. Geoff | Who, me? 13:22, 2 October 2024 (UTC)
Okay, thank you, then yes. I am a paid contributor, for sure. Monique Waddell (talk) 13:44, 2 October 2024 (UTC)

Question from Timoki (14:54, 4 October 2024)

Hello. This looks exciting community. And I'm suprised I join only now after having used Wikipedia so much :)

My intention to join was to help my good friend to add her daughter, a promising gymnast to create a page about her.

I created that initial page yesterday https://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lia_Kallio but it got rejected almost immediately. Would it maybe help me to have the page created and published if I use an actual account instead of anonymous creation? This Lia Kallio is Finnish Gymnast and aiming for the next Olympics. She has already been awarded and recogniced a lot within her field. --Timoki (talk) 14:54, 4 October 2024 (UTC)

@Timoki: You've written about your experience on the Finnish Wikipedia. Each language Wikipedia is separately administered by its own, unique group of volunteers, and there is no central oversight or coordination. Your best course is to inquire about the deletion decision there. Geoff | Who, me? 15:31, 4 October 2024 (UTC)
Oh, intersting, thank you so much for quick reply! I think I will start being active on Finnish Wikipedia albeit I do use it a lot in English too.
Nit one more question, this gymnast Lia Kallio is mentioned on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_Rhythmic_Gymnastics_World_Championships - if I click her name would it make sense to start the article creation from that in English or should I prefer creating the article in Finnish and then find out how to proceed to translations? Question from Pratyushpmishra (06:54, 21 October 2024)

Hey, I've recently made an edit request to the NIT Kurukshetra wiki page since it is very out of date and archaic, but have not received any response or anything for a very long time ? Is this normal ? --Pratyushpmishra (talk) 06:54, 21 October 2024 (UTC)

@Pratyushpmishra: You mean this edit to National_Institute_of_Technology,_Kurukshetra, yes? In fact, your extensive post was responded to on 9 October by one of the other volunteers, Bowler the Carmine, who advised you to break up your long post into separate requests, one per proposed edit. Your response to that user's suggestion seems to be that you assume that Wikipedia administrators are primarily responsible for updating and editing the articles. This is not the case: the articles are maintained and edited by the whole community of volunteers. The reality of the English Wikipedia is that there are almost 7 million articles at this time, with only something like 300,000 volunteers who edit with any regularity, though there may be millions who make just one edit in a year. Even more striking, this statistical report indicates that the current average number of volunteers making 5 or more edits per month is about 38,000. Finally, the article about NIT Kurukshetra is semi-protected so that it can only be edited by autoconfirmed or confirmed editors. You are almost autoconfirmed yourself. That should occur once you have made 4 more edits. See Wikipedia:User_access_levels#Autoconfirmed_and_confirmed_users. You'll be able to edit the article yourself once autoconfirmed. You will find that your edits will all be subject to review by all other volunteers. Be sure, when you can edit, that you provide references to independent, reliable sources for your changes. And if you are editing on behalf of the organisation, be sure to disclose your conflict of interest as explained in this article: WP:COI. Geoff | Who, me? 13:16, 21 October 2024 (UTC)
Hi, thank you so much for such a detailed response, I have gone through all the necessary articles regarding statistical surveys of wikipedia, the conflict of interest one, etc. and I have gained a better understanding on the how this all works thanks to you. I apologize for my earlier misconception regarding how Wikipedia's pages are kept up to date. I noticed that you've mentioned that I myself am almost autoconfirmed myself? I've gone through the article provided in your message, and it seems as though I have to make 10 edits and my account has to be 4 days old? How do I make these 10 edits, like is there some path I can follow that allows me to meaningfully and authentically achieve the autoconfirmed status? If so, please do offer some guidance on how to do so, as it would make my life so much easier. Thank you. Pratyushpmishra (talk) 04:46, 22 October 2024 (UTC)
(also, is there a way I can delete that earlier reply to the user Bowler the Carmine, since it is kind of misleading for any naive user to read. Maybe it requires some sort of privilege etc. but if deleting that reply isn't possible, I'll guess I will just reply again with a correction. So please do let me know. Pratyushpmishra (talk) 04:51, 22 October 2024 (UTC)
@Patyushpmishra: You can view your own contributions by clicking on Contributions at the top (or in Tools) of your own user Talk page (or user page). You have 9 as of this moment. Your account was created 28 August, so it has more than 10 days in existence. Any edit counts, even those to this user Talk page. You can confirm your status by going to the user access article section on autoconfirmed users I told you about above. As far as deleting your prior posts on the article Talk page, there is no need. The edit has become part of the history of discussions about the article and, as such, has instructive value. Keep calm and carry on. Geoff | Who, me? 12:44, 22 October 2024 (UTC)

Question from A1139530 (16:26, 15 November 2024)

Hi Geoff! I am asking you a question as you are my mentor as assigned by Wikipedia!

I have a question about editing: I'm trying to make edits via my school computer at school on the school laptop about F1 using reputable sources from the FiA (F1's governing body), but when it comes time to submit my edits, the pop-up gives me a connection error.

I did some searching online, and it says this pop-up is consistent with blocks. Is this the case (I have received no warnings and have been editing in good faith), or is it the school computer Wi-Fi being very strange?

Thank you, a1139530 --A1139530 (talk) 16:26, 15 November 2024 (UTC)

@A1139530: Presuming you were editing while logged on with your account, the most likely explanations are (1) a proxy/VPN running on the school's laptop or (2) the school Wi-Fi system is accessing the web via its own proxy/VPN via its router. Usually, a user logged on with an account can edit Wikipedia even if the IP address they are using is blocked. However, a VPN/proxy will interfere with editing even for a logged on user. (I have to disable my own VPN whenever I want to edit.) You may not be able to control either what runs on the school's laptop or its Wi-Fi. You can ask your school's IT resources about proxies/VPNs in use and/or you can try editing Wikipedia using another internet connection, either from home Wi-Fi or a café offering Wi-Fi access. If the laptop still cannot edit, and you get the access error, then you know there is probably a proxy or VPN running on the school's laptop. If you can edit away from the school, then you know it is the school's router/Wi-Fi system. Could also be both. Geoff | Who, me? 17:15, 15 November 2024 (UTC)
