Person of interest?

I ran across John Mayo (born 1838–?), an African American member of the Louisiana House of Representatives (possibly from Rapides Parish). He was also a carpenter. I know you create many stubs of a related nature and I was wondering if you are interested in creating this? John Baptist Lafargue was his son-in-law. John Mayo has a Wikidata entry started and there is a citation that mentioned his relationship to John Baptist Lafargue (already listed in that article space). I was struggling to find more then mentions (I did not check newspapers.com yet), but he sounds notable. He would have served in office around the 1860s. I also did not see him named on African-American officeholders during and following the Reconstruction era yet. PigeonChickenFish (talk) 20:24, 26 September 2023 (UTC)

user:PigeonChickenFish I checked Black Legislators in Louisiana During Reconstruction by John Vincent and I am not seeing him listed. If you want to follow up you could reach out to the author, I think it would interesting if he missed one you found. I assume he would want to know?

Of course Louisiana had a fair amount of mixing so it gets complicated putting people in categories based on "race". Eric Foner claimed to have included nearly all the legislators in his book and missed most of the legislators from Florida, lots from Mississippi, and many from others as well. I reached out to him and he didn't seem to care or to have any interest in issuing an updated version or addendum (even though he makes the false and misleading claim of including nearly all in his book). Frankly, the history of bigoted professors is not pretty, especially at Columbia it's a verrry long and ugly record.

DeeDee Baldwin's work has been incredibly helpful for Mississippi and will likely be influential in getting others to do similar work. I applaud User:Star Mississippi for keeping her draft alive (Draft:DeeDee Baldwin). She deserves recognition for her work (Star and DeeDee!!!).

Even Baldwin's work is problematic because omitting the white Republicans helps perpetuate the mythology that they were just using the Blacks and didn't really care or were just exploitative. It ignores the work they did, all their accomplishments and efforts, and the often heavy price they paid. But that's a whole 'nother can of worms.

UPDATE Professor Vincent appears to be retired. His book was originally published in 1976 so I'm not sure how easy it would be to reach him. Maybe one of his colleagues at Southern University (Department Chairs?) could help? I don't know. Anyway. If you can find sources you're good to go. Sorry I can't be more helpful Good luck!!! A week from today, we have an enormous expiring draft list (see this page) and many of these drafts were created by you and are marked as "placeholders". I'm not sure if you maintain a list of your drafts but you should consider reviewing this list for October 12th and delaying deletion for any drafts that you don't want to be deleted. Thank you. User:Liz I am currently unable to submit any draft for review so there isn't anything I can do to reduce the draft backlog. Any drafts you delete I will have restored. This doesn't seem like a useful way to build an encyclopedia. I noted your improper deletions of entries on clearly notable subjects above and never received a response. @FloridaArmy & @Star Mississippi: For reference, if you sort the list by time, 18:42 UTC is when the drafts seem to start and 19:09 UTC is when the relevant drafts appear to end. A spot check of a number of them shows that no edits have been made to delay the G13 deletions at this point in time. If the intention is to continue to work on these, perhaps a bot request should be made to forestall their deletion. @BD2412 appears to have delayed the deletion last time with edits such as these. @FloridaArmy, Star Mississippi, and BD2412: I compared the list of drafts that are eligible for deletion tomorrow (found here) with FloridaArmy's pages created currently in draft space (found here. There were 569 common drafts (of the 787 drafts listed), which I've added below.
