Managing a conflict of interest

[edit]

Information icon Hello, Fashionista345. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on the page Bernadette Thompson, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for article subjects for more information. We ask that you:

Hi there!
First off, sorry for the long gap—it might seem totally random that I'm bringing this up now, but I haven’t been active on Wikipedia for a while! I’m back to discuss an article I created (with help from other editors’ awesome feedback) about Bernadette Thompson. You had previously added two tags—one for lack of neutrality and one for conflict of interest—which I’ve since removed. I’d like to explain why, and also suggest a more constructive path if you’d like to contribute to the article (or even the entire nail art space, which I feel is super underserved on Wikipedia).
(1) Lack of Neutrality I don’t believe there are actual examples of any editor skewing the article’s perspective based on personal beliefs. Yes, it’s pretty positive overall, but that just reflects the fact that Bernadette Thompson is notable in her niche, and everything is backed up by secondary sources. You’re more than welcome to add alternate points of view if you can find reliable sources to support them. As it stands, the content and tone line up with what those cited sources say.
For context, I looked at some celebrity pages, like Lady Gaga’s, which is absolutely bursting with praise—again, all drawn from reputable, published sources. Although Bernadette’s article obviously doesn’t have the same massive scope or recognition, the “positive” tone you see is in line with what her sources say about her. It wouldn’t be fair to claim that Bernadette’s page lacks neutrality simply because so much of the coverage is positive when Lady Gaga’s page, similarly supported by secondary sources, doesn’t attract the same criticism for showing praise.
And yes, I directly quoted a lot of the praise instead of paraphrasing. That’s partly because Bernadette is in a less mainstream field; most people (especially non–nail art enthusiasts) might not realize the significance of her accomplishments. If I had just paraphrased the glowing commentary, it might’ve looked like personal bias. So “show, don’t tell” seemed best to illustrate her recognition using straightforward quotes and citations.
(2) Conflict of Interest I did look over the relevant policies (with a little help from AI, because there’s so much to learn!). The bottom line is, just because I chose to focus on this person for my first article doesn’t mean I have a relationship with her or that I was paid to write it. I don’t know her personally; I’m just a fan who was amazed that someone so influential in my favorite field didn’t have a Wikipedia page yet. Now she does!
Without concrete evidence of a conflict of interest, I don’t think it’s fair to accuse me of having one. The article was solid enough to pass review, and I made sure to incorporate feedback from other contributors. Hopefully, others will continue to build on it so it can become even better!
Anyway, that’s the long and short of it. I truly appreciate your interest. If you’d like to pitch in—either on Bernadette Thompson’s page or the nail art topic in general—I’d absolutely love your help! It’s a corner of Wikipedia that deserves more attention, and every little bit counts.
Thanks so much!
