Rodent map
Thank you for making this: File:Map of the Gray-tailed vole in the northwestern region of the United States.svg. The article made it through DYK and will be a GA contender. I put up a request at MapLab for similar animal, (Microtus oregoni) (creeping vole), but have not seen any replies. If you have time, here is the GlobalSpecies data. I'm looking into learning how to convert these myself and reviewing the information on the map that you made on commons. Any guidance on how to get started? I use a Mac PowerBook at home, with InkScape installed, but am just learning how to use it. thanks! Gaff (talk) 04:50, 22 December 2014 (UTC)
- @Gaff: Well the first thing you'll need is a vector illustration program. Inkscape (I use it), Adobe Illustrator, Corel Draw are some examples. Next up you'll need to find blank map with a compatible license that could be uploaded on Commons. What I do, is find a blank SVG map. For example if I want to do a map on Oregon, I would go to c:Category:Maps of Oregon and look at subcategories for a good and easily plotted SVG map, for example File:Blank Map of Oregon.svg. Then I download it and open it on Inkscape, using the bezier curves and straight line (the button looks like this) tool to draw out the overlay for the map and then crop if necessary using the Object > Clip > Set, then save it. This may sound confusing but doing everything is quick minus drawing points for the data part. Best, ///EuroCarGT 16:46, 22 December 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you. Gaff (talk) 02:58, 23 December 2014 (UTC)
- Also, I will try to do the map. Just not now because I only have an iPad to use. ///EuroCarGT 03:28, 23 December 2014 (UTC)
- I made a crude map for the creeping vole using Microsoft paint on my PC at work. It is on the page. I made another with InkScape, for the Western red-backed vole, which is a little more polished. I'm still trying to get the hang of InkScape and it is slow going on my old(er) MacBook laptop at home. Time for a computer upgrade! Gaff (talk) 05:25, 23 December 2014 (UTC)
- Nice! The western red-backed vole map looks good, it seems to me you used 2 colours? Anyways, looking at the PowerBook, that is quite old, if you want to continue making maps, you would need a better computer cause larger maps will use more RAM, I still have an old iMac in my basement, runs well but its laggy! ///EuroCarGT 16:21, 23 December 2014 (UTC)

- When drawing out the overlay, is there an easy way to layer the shape over the map and trace it, or just work free hand? I tried making a bitmap tracing and had some luck on another map, but it was time consuming and not very satisfactory. Gaff (talk) 22:09, 23 December 2014 (UTC)
Well for me, I work free hand to make as accurate to the map source. You could make the shape on a new file and once done, copy and paste it to the vector map document and resize it if needed. ///EuroCarGT 22:33, 23 December 2014 (UTC)
- Fixed the two color issue and added a larger map for perspective in the corner...
- I'll return to my computer soon, so I'll try to fix that. ///EuroCarGT 01:12, 26 December 2014 (UTC)
- I've been getting the hang of InkScape and will tidy up this map. I found that duplicating the map of the state, with control-D is a good way to start, Then change the color on the duplicate and use the the nodes to shape the area of distribution. It makes it easy to get clean lines along the rivers and coast lines.Gaff (talk) 06:31, 31 December 2014 (UTC)
- Sweet! That is how I get the hang of software. At first its confusing, but once you play around with the tools, you'll get a better knowledge of things! I now have my computer so I could assist you if you want. Best, ///EuroCarGT 07:05, 31 December 2014 (UTC)

I received a request for appeal from Codename Lisa about a media rename request that you rejected. (Just a matter of transparency: She contacted me directly; she has my IM. But if you fear favoritism or anything, next time the same nom. filed the same request, let another file mover handle it.)
The way I see it is that the name isn't "slightly better" as Wikipedia:File mover § What files should not be renamed? puts it. Not every person on earth knows the name of every computer program and therefore not everyone is able to decipher "Logicproxscreenshot" into "Logic Pro X screenshot" but everyone can decipher "Thiswouldbebetterwithspaces" into "This would be better with spaces". I'd personally grant a request for renaming "Godsnowhere" into "God's now here" (provided adequate context) because the former might be deciphered into "God's nowhere". Fleet Command (talk) 00:46, 31 December 2014 (UTC)
- @FleetCommand: Yeah, I have the same feeling as well with the file names. Many readers will probably won't know about Logic Pro X software. I personally think of changing a thing or two to file names is pointless, its just a file name and its not important, not every user is going to see a file name as a priority. I look at the upload log often and see file names similar to "Logicproxscreenshot" (every text bunch in one word) and its cool and nothing wrong with it. I consider changing a few thing disruptive unless if it falls within WP:FMV/W. At the end of the day, we have different opinions and views on things. Also can I ask if you could pitch in helping Category:Wikipedia files that shadow a file on Wikimedia Commons? Best, ///EuroCarGT 01:34, 31 December 2014 (UTC)
- Well, I guess this was a borderline case; even though I am much more liberal on Wikipedia than on Commons. Actually, was. I am fully retired on Commons and partly retired on Wikipedia. (Struggling) I can give you a hand in that category but I don't think you'd feel you have had any help. I can do so little. Surprisingly, I think the person that could make a big impact is this Codename Lisa. She's already a TemplateMover(?) and a lot of people think she is nice. And she's done some really good works too (including image-related). Of course, she thinks anyone who is not a vandal is acting in good faith, which I don't agree. So, if you talk to her about the situation, she can request the privilege – which is unlikely to be rejected – and get to work. Fleet Command (talk) 07:57, 1 January 2015 (UTC)
- @FleetCommand: Thanks! Codename Lisa is a template editor which is editing protected and high risk templates here. Looking at his/her contributions, 2,000+ edits to files is a plus, most of them is categories and licensing. I'll leave a message about it. Best, ///EuroCarGT 17:24, 1 January 2015 (UTC)

WikiCup 2015 launch newsletter
Round one of the 2015 WikiCup has begun! So far we've had around 80 signups, which close on February 5. If you have not already signed up and want to do so, then you can add your name here. There have been changes to to several of the points scores for various categories, and the addition of Peer Reviews for the first time. These will work in the same manner as Good Article Reviews, and all of the changes are summarised here.
Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round, and one of the new changes this year is that all scores must be claimed within two weeks of an article's promotion or appearance, so don't forget to add them to your submissions pages! If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! Huggle message
Hey EuroCarGT! You are receiving this message because you are subscribed at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Huggle/Members#Beta_testers
I have recently launched a new downloads for beta testers that contains nightly builds of huggle, eg. versions that are built every day from our master branch and contains latest huggle. These builds are currently provided only for Windows and Ubuntu. You can find them here: http://huggle.wmflabs.org/builds/
Please keep in mind that these don't have any automatic updates and if you download and start using nightly build, you will need to update it yourself! So don't get yourself to running old version, it's possible to install both stable and nightly huggle, which is what I suggest.
Keep the bug reports coming to phabricator: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/maniphest/task/create/?projects=Huggle Many thanks! Petrb (talk) 09:57, 28 January 2015 (UTC)

Adjusting pilot start date - WP:Co-op
Hello EuroCarGT,
I'll be putting out a formal update sometime soon, but I wanted to inform you that I've decided to push our start date back to mid-February rather than in January. There are number of reasons for this, but the biggest factor is that we are now facing the hard work of implementing our designs on the Mediawiki interface. It's a limiting environment to work with from a web-building perspective, and the team that worked on the Teahouse can offer similar testimonials to these challenges. We also want to make sure there is time for us and for you to test the environment out, ask questions at our project's talk page, and give us a little time to make any last changes before we start inviting editors to the space. If some of you know you will be unavailable during this time, it's totally fine if you need to bow out for the pilot. But we do need all the mentors we can get, so even if you can take the time to mentor just one or two editors, that would be fantastic.
Thanks a bunch,
I, JethroBT drop me a line on behalf of Wikipedia:Co-op.
