• WP:STIKI is just a tool that I use to counteract vandalism; it doesn't make the edit more important, and reverting it will not create an edit filter tag like that generated when one reverts edits of, say, User:ClueBot NG. In fact, this is a link to the Turkish version of the article. The "language" links on the left of the page linked to an empty article. Aquiline nose - what to do with the editor hidden under an IP address?

Hi. Thank you so much for your contribution in the Aquiline nose article. However, the unknown user who is hiding under the IP adress is making a lot of damage. Check this discussion for more, I described the problem speciffically: [1]. I was also trying to make the article protected, but I still don't know how to do it correctly: [2] However, as I see you are an experienced user. Could you help me in trying to save the version of the article with the book referrence? The book which is the source of the knowledge is written by a professional anthropologist Jan Czekanowski - one of first anthropologists ever, who recognized the Armenoid race and correctly described the racial mixed types of Europe. I'd like to ask you, if you could help me in fighting with vandalism in the "aquiline nose" article, as I see, this annontmous IP user is permanently posting the Ripley "source", when Ripley was an economist, not an anthropologist at all. He was innacurate and falesly recognized the Teutonic race, while in fact it was Dinaric race, what he described as "Teutonic". Moreover, he posts pictures of people like Jennifer Aniston, who obviously don't have an aquiline nose. The user is trying to destroy the data. Thank you for your support. How did you find this talk page Drmies? What I can say is, the user is HIDING under the IP address ,but I will soon get to know who is this, because I will make an IP investigation and I will know all the IP logs of that user, and which accounts are connected to him. Then the sockpuppet accounts will be either warned or blocked permanently. Second thing - one source is better than no source. The IP user gives Ripley as a source, while this man a) was not an anthropologist b) was harshly criticesed by the anthropological environment c) his "Teutonic race" was in fact Dinaric race, but he didn't know that while he didn't recognize the Armenoid race at all. Czekanowski (the author of the valueable source given) was an anthropologist, who recognized the Armenoid race as one of the first. Btw - the gallery which was in the sourced version of the page included ONLY people with truely aquiline noses, who are know for having such noses, while the gallery composed by this annonymous IP included mostly Nordic people or people who have snub noses. Yep. No, Yatzhek, there will no talk of "hiding": there is no hiding. Now, "IP hopping", you can say that, but even that can't be an accusation: some internet users hop without wanting to. Having said that, you're making some kind of content argument here, but for me that's neither here nor there--I just blocked the IP for edit warring since that's what they're doing; Epicgenius just beat me to it with their revert (thanks). As for the content--well, I'll say it as nicely as I can, the article is misguided and not well done. Thank you, Drmies (talk) 14:38, 5 June 2014 (UTC)

One more thing: "socking" can really only happen with registered accounts. It's a pretty clear fact that this person has edited under multiple IPs, but unless there is overlap (i.e., different IPs being used simultaneously) there is no socking, and IP addresses are almost never blocked permanently. There are other ways to counter disruption, but you are confusing/conflating a few issues here and that muddies the water. So unless you discover an actual account that has been making these edits there's no reason to speak of socking, or to act on that. Drmies (talk) 14:46, 5 June 2014 (UTC)

When you're adding refs, please don't just add bare URLs. At the very least, enclose the name of the page in quotes within brackets with the URL:

[http://url.goes.here.com "This is the name of the page"]

G train article

Hi, I removed that paragraph from the article noting the recent service increase for two reasons, 1) The "Route controversy" section already mentions this service increase with the same two sources, so there is no need to repeat this twice, and 2) The "Service history" section should only mention service or route pattern changes (e.g. if it gets extend or cut back, further into Queens or Brooklyn, starts running express at a certain section, etc.) Frequency of scheduled service changes a lot (like in 2010 when practically all trains in the city saw less frequent service on weekends), but we're not going to mention each instinct that happens, are we? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.87.211.36 (talk) 01:42, 10 June 2014 (UTC)

Actually, the train headways were what caused controversy on the service back in 2010. I understand that it can be removed because it's so common in this subway system, but the increase of train headways is widely publicized and possibly the biggest service change since that of June 25, 2010. New page for "Vanity Addresses"

Hi EG. With many of the new developments in NYC now using 'vanity addresses' (invented addresses based on the location, meant to sound better than XXX Yth Avenue or XXX Yth Street). This is not a new thing - Rockefeller Center was one of the first of these. Do you think this topic is suitable to create a Wiki entry for? Also I'm sure the list of places using vanity addresses over the world is huge so how might we begin to list some of them without it becoming a free-for-all? I gather you changed the part about his holding up a Bud Light bottle, to (incorrectly) his holding a water bottle. Revisions to Manhattan article

I had deleted irrelevant and false information about $1.2 trillion GDP being directly related to Wall Street. This info was for GDP output by NY City. It does not belong in the Manhattan article. It can be included in the NY City article, along with all of the referenced citations, which are applicable for NY City or are adquately covered by other citations specifically for Wall Street.

A picture caption correctly made reference to "TriBeCa" with a link to the "Tribeca" Wikpedia article. "TriBeCa" is also used elsewhere in the Manhattan aricle. It had been this way for a long time. The picture caption was recently changed to "Tribeca" with an unnecessary redirect link from "Tribeca, Manhattan" to the "Tribeca" article. This change added no value to the article and only added more unnecessary bytes to the article. I changed it back.

The update that you made to the Manhattan article is still incorrect and very confusing. It also really does not belong in the Manhattan article. It is better to keep that GDP info completely in the New York City article. Editors move information from one Wikipedia article to another all of the time based on clear explanations that they are moving this info in the edit history. They do not then leave the same information in the original article. It would have been better for you and I to address and agree on what the updates should be rather than simply going ahead and make the revisions.

Ultimately, what you have updated either needs to removed completely or radically changed. I would suggest it simply be removed and the updated sentence below included, with a note in the Edit History that the GDP info about the NY City metropolitan area is in the New York City article in the Economy section. So far, no one else has made any comments on this proposed change. None of the articles for the other boroughs has any NY City GDP info. It does not belong in the Manhattan article.

"Wall Street, in Lower Manhattan, has been called the financial capital of the world, and is home to the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ."

The sentence about population should be modified, as noted below, since it flows better.

"Manhattan has the third-largest population of New York's five boroughs, after Brooklyn and Queens, and it is the smallest borough in land area."

To make matters even worse, it turns out that the reported GDP figure was not just for the five boroughs of New York City, but for the metropolitan area of New York City, Long Island, and northern NJ. It is already included in the NY City article in the Economy section with this referenced citation ("Gross Metropolitan Product".). All of the citations that you relocated to the New York city article do not even reference the GDP figure of over $1.2 trillion in the referenced statement and are really superfluous. Your reason for only using Tribeca because "TriBeCa is a publicity capitalisation" is not supported by the Wikipedia article for Tribeca, which uses Tribeca and TriBeCa multiple times. As previously stated, "TriBeCa" is also used elsewhere in the Manhattan article. Most importantly, the person, who originally changed this picture caption from TriBeCa to Tribeca, did not object when I changed it back to TriBeCa based on a clear explanation in the Edit History.

Pretty interesting. "TriBeCa" and "Tribeca" — it can go either way. It's publicised as TriBeCa, but I've seen many writings refer to the area as "Tribeca", with lowercase letters. You can revert my edit on Manhattan article, because it seems tha my GDP edit was way off topic. I don't have much Internet access, so I will write a longer reply later. I also noted on the Talk page for the New York City article that your GDP addition in the New York City article at the beginning of that article can be removed since it is already adequately covered in the Economic section of that article with a more accurate and up-to-date citation.

As you must be well aware based on your extensive experience, it is sometimes amazing how the the smallest of revisions to a single item in a Wikipedia article can have a butterfly/mudslide/avalanche like effect as it begins to impact all of the related information in other parts of the article and in related Wikipedia articles. • They have moved the "Keyboard shortcuts" link out of the "Page options" menu, into the "Help" menu. Within dialog boxes, buttons are now more accessible (via the Tab key) from the keyboard.
• You can now see the target of the link when you click on it, without having to open the inspector.
• The team also expanded TemplateData: You can now add a parameter type  "date" for dates and times in the ISO 8601 format, and  "boolean" for values which are true or false. Also, templates that redirect to other templates (like {{citeweb}} → {{cite web}}) now get the TemplateData of their target (bug 50964). You can test TemplateData by editing mw:Template:Sandbox/doc.
• Category: and File: pages now display their contents correctly after saving an edit (bug 65349, bug 64239)
• They have also improved reference editing: You should no longer be able to add empty citations with VisualEditor (bug 64715), as with references. When you edit a reference, you can now empty it and click the "use an existing reference" button to replace it with another reference instead. 
• It is now possible to edit inline images with VisualEditor. Remember that inline images cannot display captions, so existing captions get removed. Many other bugs related to images were also fixed.

The team posts details about planned work on VisualEditor's roadmap. You will soon be able to drag-and-drop text as well as images. If you drag an image to a new place, it won't let you place it in the middle of a paragraph. All dialog boxes and windows will be simplified based on user testing and feedback. The VisualEditor team plans to add autofill features for citations. Your ideas about making referencing quick and easy are still wanted. Support for upright image sizes is being developed. The designers are also working on support for viewing and editing hidden HTML comments and adding rows and columns to tables.

Supporting your wiki

Please read VisualEditor/Citation tool for information on configuring the new citation template menu, labeled "⧼visualeditor-toolbar-cite-label⧽". This menu will not appear unless it has been configured on your wiki.

If you speak a language other than English, we need your help with translating the user guide. The guide is out of date or incomplete for many languages, and what's on your wiki may not be the most recent translation. Please contact me if you need help getting started with translation work on MediaWiki.org.

VisualEditor can be made available to most non-Wikipedia projects. If your community would like to test VisualEditor, please contact product manager James Forrester or file an enhancement request in Bugzilla.
