Lack of development

[edit]

FYI, the lack of development information on characters is the reason they end up in an 'other characters' table. It could be info regarding reception, awards received for the role, casting info, etc etc from a reliable source. – Meena16:56, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, I do apologise. I was wanting to develop a few different characters into sections if they were regular characters or recurring but played a vital role in a particular storyline. Please can you tell me what I can do next time to do a better job of developing . EmmerdaleFan2001 (talk) 17:12, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It's ok! Wanting to expand the site is a good thing, it just has to be done properly. The way to do it is finding sourced information on the character, such as the actor speaking about the character's personality, what is ahead for them, etc. A recent example would be what I've done for Claudette Anderson. Do you see the difference in her section to one just composed of fictional plot? It needs real-world information. If you need any further help, please do ask Meena17:16, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Well as I've been wanting to make edits to a few pages, and have done some developments on the Coronation Street 2022 characters page. Perhaps I could share with you which characters I wanted to develop and maybe you could help me? EmmerdaleFan2001 (talk) 17:18, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I noticed the movements on the 2022 page - the issue with Ted and Jon is that there is no real-world information there, just plot. And sure, go ahead. – Meena17:20, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
As you've mentioned those two characters, perhaps you could help me develop those. There's four pages I wanted to develop characters into sections on:
Coronation Street characters (2021):
Fergus Dunford
Phill Whittaker
Orla Crawshaw
Tez Wyatt
Stu Carpenter
Hashim Elamin
Isla Haywood
Dr Handley
Marrium Nazir
Coronation Street characters (2022):
Ted Spear
Jon Spear
Aaron Sandford
Ben Chancellor
Bridget Woodrow
Lucy Woodrow
Laurence Reeves
Griff Reynolds
Eliza Woodrow
Fern Lindon
Daryan Zahawi
Eric Sandford
Lauren Bolton
Emmerdale (2021):
Hazel
Alex Moore
Emmerdale (2022):
Callum Matthews

Today's edits.

[edit]

Hello again, I'm very sorry. I moved them as they didn't have a lot of information about the characters. I apologise if that was the wrong thing to do. As I've said before, there's a few sections that I would like to add to some pages, however with regards to real world information, reception and development, please could you explain what I can do to make a success of edits? EmmerdaleFan2001 (talk) 12:06, 5 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It's ok, we all make mistakes at the start of our editing journey, most experienced editors still do every now and again! The key factor is that a section shouldn't just consist of fictional in-universe plot info. It should have quotes from critics, award noms/wins if the actor was nominated, quotes from producers and the actor themselves too. Use List of Emmerdale characters (2022) as an example - every character with a section includes quotes, reception, etc, rather than just a storyline recap. – Meena13:12, 5 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, fantastic. However, I was wondering if you could help me create some sections for certain characters for certain soap pages, which are either regular characters or even recurring ones that played a part in a storyline:

Unsourced material

[edit]

Hey, I hope you are doing well and having a lovely day. I wanted to first thank you for your contributions to Emmerdale articles. However, I have noticed that some of your contributions - such as at List of Emmerdale characters (2024)#Other characters and List of Emmerdale characters (1997)#Lulu Dingle - are completely unsourced. I do completely understand that it is hard to find sources sometimes, but unsourced material should generally not be included if it cannot be verified. I am happy to help with sourcing but please do refrain from adding material that is completely unsourced. Per the MOS and WP:SOAPS, the storylines section do not need to be sourced, as watching the show acts as a source, but the casting info etc does.

Additionally, per the MOS, abbreviated years can be used if consecutive, so there is no need to change 2022–23 or other ones like that, especially in infoboxes where there is limited space.

Please do let me know if you have any questions :) DaniloDaysOfOurLives (talk) 15:35, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello there, thank you for your message. Regarding article sections in articles that are lists of soap characters from over 20 years ago, there's not a lot of sources regarding them, plus the same goes for those who were already there. EmmerdaleFan2001 (talk) 16:59, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If an article does not have enough sources, the focus should be on sourcing the characters, not adding more unsourced content. There are some sources from the Wayback machine (which has archive URLs) and magazines, which users like myself and raintheone (talk · contribs) are trying to add to improve articles. DaniloDaysOfOurLives (talk) 17:58, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
DDOOL is correct in asking you to add sources. In addition to those mentioned above there are also news archives for characters from that era. The Free Library, Newspapers.com, British Newspaper Archive, Gale are just some useful tools for sourcing old information. Also can you start using edit summaries, you have been here two years now so it is about time you did.Rain the 1 18:20, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello there, yes I will do my best to remember to add edit summaries when I make edits. EmmerdaleFan2001 (talk) 21:13, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I understand. It puts a project of mine on a hold though, which was to add more character sections on older pages, more importantly the regular characters as I feel they should be represented. If I can find sources for those older characters going forwards I will going forwards. EmmerdaleFan2001 (talk) 21:12, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Daily Star

[edit]

Hey, just to let you know that the Daily Star is not considered reliable - (WP:DAILYSTAR) and is deprecated, as is The Sun and The Daily Mail, alongside others. Good reliable sources include Digital Spy, Radio Times, Manchester Evening News and others. Please let me know if you have any questions. Recurring

[edit]

Hey, I hope you are well :) I have noticed that in a lot of soap opera character sections you have changed "regular" to "recurring" without a source or consensus. I agree with some of the changes, but many of these characters that you changed were listed with the regular cast on both Wikipedia and in reliable sources (including the soap itself). A character does not need to appear for years to be considered a regular. I would suggest maybe starting a talk page next time rather than mass changing the characters as it makes things more difficult. Please do let me know if you have any questions. DaniloDaysOfOurLives (talk) 14:15, 23 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Whenever I've changed from regular to recurring, it's usually when I've looked on the soap Wikia pages and seen how frequently they've appeared. Rowan Cunliffe is a regular because he's appeared frequently. Where would I find sources that suggest that they are either regular or recurring? EastEnders lists

[edit]

Hi EmmerdaleFan2001, hope you're doing well. First, I wanted to thank you for the tremendous effort you have made in expanding List of EastEnders characters introduced in 2024, you should be proud. I just wanted to discuss some errors, however, primarily with the Holly section. I saw you rationalise the surname Wicks as it is her name on the EastEnders wiki. The EastEnders wiki is not a reliable source, and it is better to name characters based on what they were credited as, in this case just Holly. Although her name may be Wicks in-universe, it wasn't confirmed in the show or the credits, so can't be considered the character's common name. Additionally, when creating her infobox, the "other relatives" parameter was packed full of characters. This is not the purpose of that parameter, although these characters are her relatives, the usage as stated on the infobox template page states that the section is "For any other relative not listed above who is essential to the understanding of the character". It is unlikely the character will ever appear again, and she was introduced after characters such as Pat Butcher had passed away, so I removed the inclusion.

I'd like to clarify that you have clearly worked hard and done well to improve the soap lists, which I commend, but I just wanted to explain why some material was removed. Thanks! FishLoveHam (talk) 18:30, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello FishLoveHam, thank you for your kind comments. In response to your feedback, I had a feeling that someone would eventually remove the Wicks surname, but I included it in the meantime just in case details were revealed. As for the other relatives parameter, I actually reused the infobox that was used when I had previously moved the section to the other characters table. I forgot to remove characters. I have been trying to make sure that all possible characters receive a section in an article, providing there's enough development, reception or plotline supported by reliable sources. There have been plenty of characters introduced in 2024, 23 to be precise so far. As it's only October, there could potentially be more to come.
On another note, I have seen that you have written articles on characters from EastEnders. I still haven't actually figured out how to create articles so I was wondering if these characters may be in the pipeline for an article: Claudette Hubbard, Bernadette Taylor, Carmel Kazemi, Shakil Kazemi, Vinny Panesar, Pam Coker, Frankie Lewis? Have a good day! EmmerdaleFan2001 (talk) 21:47, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Just if I may add - I am currently working on drafts for Claudette, Carmel and Frankie. I should get them done sometime in the winter... depending on how things go. DaniloDaysOfOurLives (talk) 22:43, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello again, that's wonderful to hear. I still have a lot to learn about writing articles. There's of course no hurry and well done for all your work! EmmerdaleFan2001 (talk) 12:02, 25 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
